    Ezequiel chokes (aka sleeve chokes) are totally legitimate attacks inside the guard. I've seen high level people put to sleep that way.

    I used this today. New guy came in, not super big and I've only been training since march, but he went head lock in my closed guard and I remembered watching this, shrugged, shrugged, shrugged, and took his back. Thank you guys

    Thanks for showing the headlock, I got caught yesterday by a big guy lying in my guard and getting an Ezekiel choke on me and I was kicking myself afterward thinking of the options I could have done. I've been training for about 5 months and I always have trouble with top pressure from big guys but this video really helped. Going to drill these a lot so I never get caught like that again.

    Lol at flashbacks . Back in the 90s all 4 of those attacks were standard Judo tactics in dealing with my guard during Newaza sessions when Jiu Jitsu was not familiar in US. That last one from the half guard is still a pain in the ass and was the hardest to defend against for me. This was a great instructional for those not used to being attacked like that.. Thanks

    Thanks for putting this video up. Those are techniques that always confuse me and throw me off my game, because higher level guys would never go for them. The result is usually that I get frozen for a while until I figure my way out of them, but its nice to have some techniques ready to nullify them immediately.

  • @omerikog
    @omerikog 11 лет назад

    A-sometimes you need to be faster or not get into bad position
    B- the game is keeping the distance with your legs and body while he got the first hand in the collar
    C- you can still take the armlock - depends on your level,position and ability to roll on your stomach
    D- its always hard to catch big and strong guys on armlocks - chocks are better!
    good luck

  • @bertohtown41
    @bertohtown41 11 лет назад

    thats is true to an extent. If all you drill americanas from inside the guard chances are you will catch a lot of inexperienced grapplers with it but anybody that knows what they are doing and even occasionally drills arm bars will recognize the crossing your arm over situation and immediately go for the armbar. You have to remember that the person whose guard you are in is in the dominant position so you should try to escape their guard and move to a more dominant position before attacking.

  • @piaten
    @piaten 12 лет назад

    It's all about body mechanics, namely the fact that angle of joints and the pressure of weight on top of you can sometimes make your guard less effective. If you're a big guy, and your opponent opens himself for a choke, then by all means take it! Just make sure you're in control, and be ready to react and back out immediately. Also, it's main use is as a distraction, or feint, to provoce a reaction, that can be exploited.

    What if your big guy opponent is strong enough (on the X choke part) to stand up and lift you up with him? What's the best thing to do at that step to counter it?

  • @hian
    @hian 11 лет назад

    to be fair though, collar chokes from inside guard can be a good faint if you're on top of a guy with a really tight closed guard. I'd never go for one with the intent of choking them out, but it can be a way of causing a distraction so the guy on bottom doesn't get the freedom to work his guard game uninterrupted.

  • @HiredGunGames
    @HiredGunGames 12 лет назад

    it can be but if he gets a grip lock by grabbing his wrist or interlocking his fingers he can stay like that for awhile also if his legs are wrapped around the waist it can be very hard to get out of it, best bet is to be stronger than the other guy and less tired as well as calm

  • @asengeorgiev7848
    @asengeorgiev7848 Год назад +1

    Haha, I'm a big guy who has done all of those...the difference is, I have never expected them to work (I know I can expect an armbar), and they never have. Also, I do them to bigger, stronger guys as well :) !
    So why have I used them? Simple, really: you can't neither armbar me, nor take my back, without opening your legs (OK, the latter is possible, but most people still open them). I suck at opening the closed guard, I'm lazy, and I know that white belts like me are going to submitted a lot, so I don't mind risking another one...perfect combo ;)!
    Also, as I'm learning more about guard passing, I use those moves less and less. Big guys can learn, too!

    I wish I saw this last week! I have been training for 4 months now and I was sparring this guy who was in his first month. He did the headlock thing from guard. Now I assumed it was gonna be like a stall move or he was gonna eventually move on to something else or something so i figured I'd try and wait it out, wrong! He just stayed there pressing his shoulder into my face. I eventually pushed his arm up and put him in the arm triangle position from bottom and worked for his back.

  • @fattywarbucks
    @fattywarbucks 11 лет назад

    Only down side to the kimura escape you showed, is if it is high lock (closer to shoulder), you slide right into the paint brush. Big guys probably wouldn't know that though. Awesome sneak attack though. Kimura over the shoulder and give up your back. The position change locks it in place.

  • @dontwalkdontrun

    Choking someone in their guard with their lapel is somewhat popular in judo. I believe the idea, in judo at least, is to get someone who has a tight closed guard to open. My first judo sensei used to use the move a lot, and I have used it. I think it is called kata juji jime. I also recall seeing a video on you tube of a BJJ tournament where a BB in judo chokes out a BB in BJJ with the technique.

  • @dontwalkdontrun

    Someone just told me what the technique is called in BJJ. Look up Amassa Pao. It works to open up their guard if they are playing a tight closed guard game. You need to have a good base, and you know they can go for the armbar, but it makes them move and react.

    That's the best I can do without getting too detailed for this format. I want to make sure you got what I said though about WHY everyone is so against using strength and hope you got that part. The only other thing I'd say is that you should try to celebrate every loss in training like it means a victory elsewhere. If you value each one for the lesson you can learn from it, it can mean exactly that. You MUST allow yourself to be tested to failure in training. No failure? No learning.

    The problem with these is that it's never a cross collar choke. It's an Ezekiel or a punch choke where they're on their feet stacked all the way into your head with their head down. No chance you can make space for an armbar. And if you start trying to work for a back take, they just abandon, reset, and do it again lol

  • @jimolyphant7985

    Im just curious as to why their is such a bad stamp on brute force submissions? I can get a knuckle choke on an unsuspeting opponent pretty much 90% of the time, but everytime I do it people get like frustrated... Completely ignoring brute force submissions is dangerous in my opinion. I knew a high level blue belt who, in a bar fight, ended up on bottom and got raped choked by a big bouncer. Bouncer was huge and just grabbed his neck with both hands and choked him out from inside the guard..... if it works.... then why hate on it

    • @PercyLeMat
      @PercyLeMat 10 лет назад +24

      I can imagine a couple of reasons why. First, you simply can't teach someone to be big and strong. It isn't primarily a matter of instruction or technique, so there isn't much of a point in spending time on it. Second, winning by brute force often leads to sloppy technique, which can get you in trouble when and if you run into someone stronger or more skilled than you. My experience is that I often have a harder time gauging my own performance against smaller opponents. I can screw up in all kinds of ways but still "win" simply by weighing a smaller opponent down through sheer mass. In a related third point, BJJ is a sport. Brute force might be an asset when practicing, but it loses a bit of its edge as soon as weight classes become an issue.

    • @yungunz88
      @yungunz88 10 лет назад +5

      Imo, belts are not that important.. Blue belts make up the most diverse amount of knowledge and usually separate responsibility of being purple. Should we ignore these techniques of brute strength? ? Of course not, but should a properly trained smaller weaker individual tap to them?.. This is where I believe this black belt is taking his stance on these type of techniques

    A lot of BJJ teachers do use the Japanese names. It is just easier for English speaking people to understand when they make their own English version of the technique.. When it is said in Japanese, everyone will have a hard time remembering what it is since they don't know what any Japanese word actually means. We can break X-Choke down easily since we speak the language...

  • @mordeth86
    @mordeth86 12 лет назад

    Yea like MrWangskungfooey said, you can leave mount and go to the opposite side of the arm he is choking with

  • @MrMZaccone
    @MrMZaccone 11 лет назад

    And let's be clear, the reason not to use strength in training is so that when you come up against that rare guy, bigger stronger and faster than you, you still have the same chance. If you're in a real fight for something genuinely important, use your strength, just don't use it to your own detriment.

  • @dontwalkdontrun

  • @bryanhill3524
    @bryanhill3524 12 лет назад

    Right, which is the absolute best way to do it. But depending on the position of the person attempting a submission, "X-Choke" can mean something else, if you were on the back vs a choke from the guard. It's the MMA type people IMO.. not BJJ people. But they both are guilty to an extent.

  • @MrMZaccone
    @MrMZaccone 11 лет назад

    Well, top "control" from inside guard is problematic because that's what "guard" is all about, control from the bottom. Once you pass guard to at least half then you've got something. When you say "decent" guard passes, I'd say that the basic ones are the best and if you just keep working them, they work the best. Be very aware of the moment that the guard changes from open to closed or from one form to another, these you need to exploit because that's when your opponent is weakest.

  • @jimmyzhangming

    the opp need to give certain resistance to show that your technique /mechanism does work, and not just a plan of attack/strategy. body mechanism means: opp has no way to counter (easily) and you can achieve your intended body positions.

    I think ezekiel choke is a bit better from the guard. There was one ex-judo guy who did it to me once. I assumed that it would be easy to defend, because I was on the bottom guard. But it was on so fast that the superior leverage provided by my legs was of little use. It was quite suprising, because you don´t expect to be choked from there. Then again, I was white belt, so defence might actually be easier than I thought.

But trying to sub someone in their guard that is good, will just result in you annoying and maybe hurting them in the processes, them getting angry and choking you extra hard.

    I think that might've been an ezekiel choke.
    People usually don't fall for it twice but yeah you can do it.

    As always, thanks for the great videos! When I tried the last move (5:20) in training, it worked twice, but on the third time, the dude did a big back step (5:27) and moved to side control. How can I stop the back step when I use the butterfly hook to elevate the guy?

    So, if you weren't the first one to do it, you can't do it? Awesome logic man.

    Overall, great video. I'm just not a fan of that headlock escape. It would be better to slide your way on top (a much stronger escape platform as Saulo Ribeiro says) and do a headlock escape from there. You escape and get the added benefit of not developing cauliflower ear.

    I'm a little guy and I live to dominate the top game. Big guys generally aren't as Mobil on thier backs and if you have good base you will do great.

    What about for someone who is smaller but heavier and denser. I'm 5' 9'' but I only weigh 140-145lbs and sometimes I have issues with short guys who are still heavy.

    Cool story bro. In judo if there is no signifigant action for 3 seconds the ref will stand you back up. I have been practicing judo for about 12 years and I have won most of my matches on the ground. If you want to keep the action on the ground and uke wants to stall a leg drag is too slow. Judo is fast and dynamic, BJJ is technical and methodic. Choking someone in their guard works. There is video evidence of this, and I am telling you it is popular and effective even if you are not bigger.
