Strategies for Small Guys to use in Jiu-Jitsu Against Larger Opponents.

  • It happens to a lot of guys when they train with bigger and stronger opponents--they get smashed. In this video, I explain the strategies and concepts I use while rolling with my purple belt student, Jason, who is about 260 lbs. To put that into perspective, I am a 175 lbs. So there's almost a 100 lb. difference here. To prevent yourself from being smashed by a larger guy you have to have a good guard. You don't necessarily need speed, but the focus is on maintaining a strong connection by using your legs and arms, and of course grips.

    I am the smallest guy in the gym and it's difficult to work with my opponents, not only are they bigger but stronger too, this video is amazing, please make more content geared towards smaller guys holding their own against big opponents... it's tough to find that type of content 🤙

      If you’re not learning how to deal with big guys in your jujitsu class you’re in the wrong class with the wrong instructor.Thats what competition jujitsu has done to jujitsu,turned it into a struggle between the strong and the weak,the heavy and the light just like judo has done.These arts were specifically designed for smaller peoples to be able to deal with larger peoples but unfortunately those principles are not taught by certain instructors or schools because they ida never learned it are they’re just teaching to make a quick buck.

      The knees to the shoulders technique in the beginning works best for me I'm the smallest guy in the gym I train at too bro and I used the knees to the shoulders against this 250 plus man and I beat him and controlled him the whole time pretty much and wore his ass out I helt on to the sleeves while stretching him out and with my knees and pulling at the same time with my arms and it works man trust me it's painful as fuck as well

      I also made him but hurt because I weighed 125 at the time 😂😂😂 now I'm 135 been weight training and exercising to get in shape and I'm keeping up with the big boys always remember use those knees in the shoulders or chest and build those frames man watch videos on Frame building they will save u from being hoochie mama smashed brother and don't let the size bring u down take advantage of it and roll with those big guys it will improve ur game make u stronger physically and mentally and get ur ass in shape as well and not only that but think man full grown man in the streets are around 200 and above so we're gonna have to learn to roll with the big boys and find ways to take them out man oh BTW I'm a white belt still learning but I'm improving and the big guy I beat was a white belt as well and he was but hurt he quit after the rolling with me

    yes, more small people videos, please!!
    I found this really helpful. as a small person (125lbs and 5'2), most of my instructors don't have a lot of tips to help me out specifically. As a new white belt (2 months in), I haven't gotten the experience to find the best way it works for me, and these videos help a lot!! (though they're hard to find). I really want to improve, and specifically am looking for tips for people with short legs. my sparring partner is similar to me, but she has really long legs, which is a big advantage for her.
    i'm not the smallest in the gym though, there's one teen who's probably 4'11, and 100 lbs, big props to that guy, cause he's actually really good.

    Awesome video. I'm a black belt and I teach at the Foundry in Farmington, Maine. You and I have almost identical games when it comes to dealing with bigger stronger opponents. I use sleeve grips almost exclusively and play a tough open guard game. I always try to wear my opponent out because I know a big guy can't last too long, especially when I'm trying to preserve as much strength as I can. When I feel like they're getting tired, I push their knees back constantly, so it looks like they're flying like superman. Then I use the push sweep to get them over. I like to go for the straight arm locks like you did in this video too. They're right there for the taking. Thanks for sharing!

    Do you recommend pulling guard and some type of sweep set, right away for bigger opponents?

    Thanks. Much respect and appreciation.

    • @JayGaulard
      @JayGaulard 2 года назад +1

      6'3", 185lbs, black belt here. If you're a taller guy like you are, you can pull guard and then keep stretching your opponent out by pushing his knees back so he's flying superman. Then go for the push sweep (scissor sweep variation). That's the only way I roll with bigger guys and win. I tire them out with my open guard (push pull) and then quickly sweep them. It gets the best of them.

    • @tommym321
      @tommym321 3 года назад +1

      Honestly at some point, a size and strength disparity is so great that there is not much point- not to mention I don’t want to see you get injured. I am a 48 year old black belt and I’m decently strong for my 150 pounds. There is another black belt in my gym who is 6’5” and 250 pounds. There really isn’t much that either one of us can get out of serious competitive sparring with each other. I’m no caio terra or Bruno mafalcine. For you, I’d give serious consideration to only rolling with men that big if they are higher belts and know how to prioritize technique over muscle. Don’t roll with big dudes who are inexperienced and have ego issues- it’s not worth it and can lead to injury. Avoiding injuries is such a key aspect to getting better in this art.

    • @hoppy760
      @hoppy760  2 года назад +1

      Your technique is going to have to be a lot better than your bigger opponents. And if you don’t have technique then you’re going to have a good strategy, cardio and good submission defense. When on bottom side control keep your elbows tight and hands near your neck-this is to protect your neck. Be very conscious of when your opponent takes some of the pressure off of you to go for a submission, and then try to regain your guard or turtle or escape. Newer people will always make some type of mistake and when they do take advantage of it.
