Glitter is my go-to. It can be touched up in a snap
And it's a great way to cover up any chips from a previous mani haha!

On the radial, cut your sponge to match the curve of your cuticle and put one edge of the sponge right at the side of your nail. You will line it up perfectly every time.

I've always loved using nail polish, but I just did my first gradient last week - a horizontal one - and I was so amazed by how gorgeous it looked! I did a mint green into blue, and I'm looking forward to trying out more combinations!
Just the basic gradient always makes me feel super fancy, even though it's way less work than stamping or nail vinyls or whatever. I'm trying the radial next. Thanks for the good ideas and tips!
Mitigate is a great word. We didn't do gibberish when I was a kid, but I would think that kind of thing is regional. We spoke pig Latin. I remember being bad at it and having to practice to get it right lol.
Omg, everyone always looks at me like I'm insane when I mention gibberish from childhood! So glad I'm not the only one!

I use the square/rectangular end of the sponge and then once it's dry, you can cut the top off and use the sponge over and over until it's too small.

Yes. They seem to work differently depending on your own body chemistry. The best for me by far is Unt, which is getting hard to find. I think it's discontinued. It stays on until I remove it. Holo Taco is similar but I get more pop offs.
There's one - angel something- that literally ripped my nails coming off. It was actually scary. I want to warn anyone who uses a peely base but chemistry does make a big difference & it might be great for some people. There's got to be a reason it's still on the market.

I do not like nail polish remover, it drives me crazy especially with glitters.
LA Colors has a peel off base coat that's very affordable and easy to find in dollar stores and it works pretty well for the price.

Yes! My mother taught me gibberish and pig Latin, lol. So much fun! My favorite word is 'putrid'. You can feel that word. You don't have to understand English to know something is nasty when you hear putrid. It's a fun word, lol

Haha! I could never get the hang of pig Latin but gibberish was the coolest in my school!
Never tried these before because I always forget to buy the stuff, but this video reminded me that I should. I have a feeling wide square cuticles are going to work a lot better with liquid latex than those pre-shaped tape guard things.

My favorite gradient to do is a glitter gradient or one with sunset colors as a background for palm trees in the summer. Specific, I know lol.
I've never done a diagonal one, which I have to say is a great idea. I have very small nails and they're short, so I always struggle with fitting gradients and nail art on them.

I’m probably going to attempt a radial gradient today, so I’m here to refresh myself on the technique!
I think a cool video would be a compilation of some of these gradient techniques with different colors or types of polish.
I have never heard of gibberish as a language like this. And then googling it found something similar but with different set of letters inserted. I suspect the different variants are regional (especially pre-internet days). I was a military brat growing up (dad in air force), and we got posted around Canada a bunch of times and I noticed subtle differences in childhood games (like hand clapping games and songs) in different places that we lived. Not huge, but the words or phrasing of one line would be a little different.
I've only done horizontal gradients a couple of times, but I've had an idea for a vertical gradient mani that I haven't actually tried yet that I think would be fun.
I love gradients! I normally just do a horizontal one, but I like the look of the vertical too.
I loved this video. Definitely looking forward to a sequel. My favorite gradient was the vertical gradient with the darker edges. I've never seen that one before. In my area, we didn't speak the gibberish you referred to. We spoke "pig Latin". It's where you take off the first letter of a word and put it on the back with an added long a sound. ("Kelli" would be elli-Ka)
We called that language "gibberish" too! I never thought about how words like "mitigate" sound like gibberish

Last one I attempted was for Valentine’s and I was so out of it I only added the new color to the sponge. Dabbed it on my nails and it was so bad! I need to redeem myself lol.
The difference between using both or one on the sponge is HUGE for smooth gradients.

But I admit, my main thought when watching this video was that you would fit right in here in Green Bay with that eye look😅 I can't say I've ever heard that kind of gibberish, we always spoke pig latin when I was a kid. I attempted a gradient for the first time last weekend!! It was only partially successful but I feel that was more due to constant distractions than anything else. I'm hoping to attempt again soon!

Haven't done a gradient for a long time and I love them! Every once in a while I think about it, but then do something else. I have done the horizontal and vertical only so far, but love the side angled and the circular one. Will have to try next! Thank you for the refresher course!💜👍💅

I tried doing a gradient for the first time a few days ago. I didn't realize there were so many different kinds. I did the horizontal and could only get 2 colors on with my short nails. I will have to experiment with these others. They're really pretty. I struggled with the liquid latex, so I think I will give the nail barriers a try. Thank for posting this!
Yeah sometimes I really mess up that latex just sticking my fingers together by accident or getting it on my actual nail haha! i'll def be buying more of these barriers.

The holo diagonal is definitely my favorite. Could you do a tutorial on a creme to holo gradient? I've tried it in the past and I think it turned out ok, but some extra tips would be super helpful 😊

HAH! What timing, I just did a gradient this morning. :D Also, I am so glad you say Gradient instead of Hombre. I could never get on the hombre train. Been using Photoshop too long I guess. ;) As for barriers, I swear by tape. Latex just does NOT stick to my skin for whatever reason. I dab the sponge on the nail, and the latex sticks to the sponge, comes RIGHT up off my skin. So tape works much better. I did go without any barrier a while back, and was like "I always have to do cleanup anyway, what's a little more?" except it's NOT just a little more.. having used no barrier like.. quadrupeled the time it took to clean up. So yeah, HIGHLY advise using some form of barrier around the nail to make cleanup easier!! And finally, I'm surprised you didn't cover reciprocal gradients in this video! I know you've covered them before, but I thought you'd show one here. No biggie tho, it IS a slightly more advanced technique!
Haha yeah tape is my go-to lately because it's easy and cheap. But I really liked these barriers, they really got close to the skin. I'll have to order more!

Just wanted to say thanks for your eyeshadow/nail polish video. My four year old daughter and I did it and she enjoyed it. She loves nail polishes and eyeshadow (which I hated until after I had her) and was on a science experiment kick so it was fun. Of course, she threw a tantrum that we only did a few, but hey. It was fun and the BH Galaxy eyeshadow palette gave us a nice polish

The radial gradient reminds me of water marbling in a way...I wonder if you could start with the darker color somehow...just typing aloud, lol! I haven’t been brave enough to try a gradient yet...someday.

Gradients are sooooo pretty but something I'll have to build up to--I can barely avoid deluging my cuticles with nail polish, feel like I need to master that before I attempt anything else. Thanks for the liquid latex/nail protector tip, will look into them.
That's a clever way to remember which way you're holding it up :D I always use the flat end of the wedge because it's easier to cut them off to use the rest of the sponge, I've never tried using the fat side like you're using here!

An easy trick to blend gradients is to use a light iridescent topper! Works like magic!

Gradients have a special place in my 💙 bc they're what actually started my np obsession. I saw someone with a blue horizontal gradient, looked up how to do it on youtube, and the rest is history.😅 JC why don't you use the rectangular part of the sponge? That way when you're done you can just cut it and use again. Can't wait for the sequel!!
Personally I just use the one long side and then the other (and then I use the thin sides for glitter gradients!) So I reuse them that way! I don't love cutting the rectangular part because the jagged edges always seem to make my gradients look less smooth haha 😅 guess it's just personal preference!
@@KelliMarissa I use slices of the wedge on mine, and I have a dedicated pair of sharp scissors, so roughness isn't really an issue.

I love to use a glitter gradient to cover up the chips on my creme nail polish manicures to make them look pretty for a few days longer. My friend sales color street and it works on them too.
This is so crazy! I just happened to do a gradient last night with a different glitter from the Breakfast at Tiffany's collection. I was wearing Icelanded a bottle of OPI and dabbed on Champagne for Breakfast with the brush (because I'm lazy). I thought it looked very elegant and perfect for a special occasion. Now I want to practice doing sponge-on gradients.

For the radial one you should try whatever those stamping things are, seems like it would be easier for circles?
For the radial gradient you could measure the general length of your nail and measure up from the fat edge of your sponge and know that's the length you have to work with. Then if you start your bullseye right from the fat edge you get a better idea how the circle should be sized. I hope that made any sense!
I don't have the patience or latex tolerance to mask my nails, so I use a narrow piece of sponge, and dab the sides and then the middle for a horizontal gradient. Cleanup is quick because there's not a lot of overlap. I've done quadrant gradients with the holo taco rainbow collections, with vertical and horizontal gradients on the same nail this way, it just requires setting down one horizontal gradient on half the nail and then being careful with the midline doing the second one, or it can even be done on one sponge if the sponge is very close to the width of the nail. I use sally beauty's face secret ultra foundation sponges and cut them down to size. If I'm doing something fussy, I'll even trim the corners at the cuticle end so that I have a position match between the nail and the sponge.
For the two collections of rainbows together, I did the darker rainbow at the cuticle and the lighter corresponding color at the tip, Because 7 colors and 5 fingers, it ended up that some colors got 2 half nails and some colors only had one.
I love doing gradients as well! You explained everything so good! I love scaled gradients, even though they are pretty hard haha
