I was fatigued and stressed and had bad headaches every morning. I would wake up at least 6 times a night (that I was aware of). I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and after about 4-5 weeks of adjusting to the mask and getting up to 4 hours per night with the CPAP, I was finally able to lose weight after more than 3 years of not being able. This has been life changing for me!

After 12 months of consistant use of my CPAP and with little diet change, I lost 92 pounds. The amount of energy I now have, along with not having to carry around so much extra weight, just makes it easier. CPAP saved my life as a 36 year old man. It took me a few weeks to get use to the mask but I got there. Just don't fight it. I honestly cannot imaging sleeping without it now. You will feel so much better over time.

Cheers for this, I been tryin to find out about "what are the alternatives to a cpap machine?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - letochy fast apnea plan - (do a google search ) ? It is a good one of a kind product for discovering how to get rid of sleep apnea without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my work buddy got cool success with it.

I`m having this difficulty with my husband for over 23 years and we tried to treat the condition with laser surgery but still there`s no good until our buddy suggested us this particular snoring treatment t.co/YQt06Q9Wam Needless to say I hurried online and acquired a duplicate. The program really does work!! It`s safe easy to exercise and proved extremely effective. .

Hmm, I have trouble keeping the thing on my face and sealed. It's just so uncomfortable to wear to sleep. I feel like I'm wasting my machine. Since you lost all that weight now, do you still have sleep apnea? I haven't really used my machine.. and I lost 61 lbs over 7 mos of diet change. will probably be more effective if I add it to the mix I'm guessing... ?

Someone else on this thread said to you, "I like you." I would like to say that I like you very much, too!
You come across as very sincere and explained this condition in an easy to understand way. I have just been diagnosed with sleep apnea and have ordered the CPAP machine. I don't want to wear the mask but I realize that I must at least try to and hope that it does help me. I am about 20 pounds overweight and have had difficulty loosing weight so it is comforting to know that sleep apnea might have contributed to that problem. Thank you for posting this video; it was very helpful for me. You are the kind of lovely doctor everyone hopes they will get as their GP but seldom do.

I just discovered this! Excellent info. Thank you. I was told mine is central and ended up on oxygen because my doc wanted me to go for a 2nd sleep study & the ins. said no. On the phone talking with doc (pulmanologist) when he found out I already had heart issues he was hot! He had said, "They (ins) may deny me putting you back in a 2nd sleep study but they won't deny me doing this. I will fight them!" Thirty minutes later American Home Patient was at my door with an oxygen concentrator , it's tubing, canulas and instructions. As you can imagine my sleep then was SO very much better! I sleep w/an oximeter (ring) that is connected via bluetooth to my phone. First my "ox" will buzz and then the phone alarm will go off when pulse or O2 levels step outside of set parameters. My levels are generally 97 & 98. Sometimes 99, sometimes 95 or 96. When first detected I was in the hospital for something else and the nurses asked me if I was aware. I wasn't. They said it dropped to 60%. I don't snore and am a (R) side sleeper.

Hi...in the past few months I have two sleep studies both indicated that I have Obstructive Sleep Apnea but I know my body and I strongly feel I have Central Apnea mainly because I hardly snore and I sleep on my sides and I wake up gasping for air. I have requested oxygen but my doctors are hesitant to give it to me. I don't know why. Two weeks ago I landed in the hospital for kidney stones and they gave me oxygen and I slept better in 3 hrs than in years. I just don't know what to do now.

I appreciate you more than you can imagine. I had the most disgraceful visit with an Orthopedic Sergeant last month. Who ignorantly stated that sleep apnea is not a contributing factor in weight gain. This will prove to be needed visual to show that I have not mindless or careless chose to overly indulge in unhealthy eating habits. With your information, and with another's information I have begun creating a plan for me and my 11 year to hopefully reach a healthier weight by half of a goal I set for us over the next year.

All things you have said became true to me. 50 stops in 1 hour. High blood pressure, short tempered, having a light stroke, unregular heartrates, 10 different drug each day and after all being reseached by a specialist getting a sleepstudy . I never snore so nobody though that this could be the case because i'm always sleeping on my stomage. Now i'm getting a cpap device. After alle those years. I could be dead by now. Now i have to think what to do with the years to come. ;-) Thanks for the great video. I've seen it multiple times. I wish you all best.

Great video!! This coming from someone who felt terrible for six months and had no clue what was going on. Sleep apnea and why? 20 pounds. I am 5'10 225/230. At 200 no sleep apnea. I now use bi-pap and have not missed a night since January. If I do I feel hungover like in college except I need to work and be a father instead of laying in bed. Trust me get checked out. My blood pressure was high, I was falling asleep on highway and a miserable person. 60+ apneas an hour. Double tested and results matched. Now under 5 consistently. Anyone have questions please ask. I lived and living it. It will get better!! Btw- dieting and dropped 8 in 2 weeks. Never been so hungry in my life. Weight is a huge factor. Good luck all.

Great video! I wish I would have seen this 20 years ago. Always had trouble sleeping, never had many dreams, was diagnosed with sleep apnea thru a cheap $10 take home test, took the more involved take home test as I didn't want to spend the $800 for a in house sleep study, insurance actually covered part of it. I discovered I had complex sleep apnea, more central then obstructive, received my dreamstation and dreamware mask, what a great mask, immediately noticed the difference although it took 3 weeks to get used to it without a humidifier. After 4 months my weight is under much better control and I feel 200% better. I would not go to sleep without it.

    2021 Happy New Year 🎉🎉.
I just found this video Jan 2nd at 1:15 a.m. I was sending a family member video's, I thought would give insight on my new CPAP journey.
I got here looking up the importance of "sleeping" & weight loss.
This video helped to confirm why I've been having problems with weight loss, my excessive craving for junk food for years, ( less than a month on my CPAP, my appetite has changed.) feeling short of breath, fatigue & lack of energy.(less than a month, I'm feeling better)
At first I thought it was due to my not getting my Allergies shots. I'm so Thankful & Grateful to my Lord Jesus Christ, that I refuse to let my doctor"s nurse 's fear of covid-19 & their dismissal of my complaints stop me from fighting for my life. I knew something wasn't right. It wasn't in my head. I kept going back. One day she had a student who actually listened to me. At 1st I didn't want to tell her due to the 😨 FEAR of Coronavirus. I told her I've been tested for coronavirus twice and they both were "Negative". I've had some of these symptoms before covid-19. I pray 🙏 if you are reading this post, that the Lord will grant you FAVOR to receive whatever you whether it be a sleep study, CPAP machine or the right doctor. Father God intercede on this person's behalf. Make a way out of no way. Glory Hallelujah in Jesus name.. Àmen = it is so!!

I’ve had my dream works full mask and with Res med air 10 cpap for a little over a month, love the tube attaches at the top of my head which allows for movement without lying on the tube. Full mask took a bit getting used to but I do sleep better. Cardiologist told me to get it and stop delaying it, so I did after 8 months of putting off the pulmonologist recommendations. I’m a 3 year open heart survivor and don’t want sleep apnea to cause me to go back under into surgery for anything. Res med tracks your nightly experience and that helps my interest. Got my first 100% Tuesday night. Yeah. Go for it, you’ll love yourself for it....

This lady knows what she is talking about.
I thought I was sleeping 7-8hrs a night. Turns out I was having upwards of 130 events per hour. That's basically 1 every 30 seconds. I was MAYBE getting half an hour of actual sleep per night, and it is such a slow and gradual process (at least for me it was) that you don't notice it. Until you fall asleep at your computer every night, and then almost pass out standing up at work because you are so exhausted. I had a blood oxygen level of 60%, and they start to worry when you get to 90%.
Anyone who says blah blah the masks are horrible, you don't wanna do that, etc. doesn't know what they are talking about. I use a full face mask and I love it. I use it every single night, and it has made a huge difference.

Frustratingly, I'm in the "rare" (not rare) group of folks who gained weight because of sleep apnea. I was diagnosed at 23, 5'8 and 150 pounds. I'm now 33 and 260 pounds. Sleep apnea, for me, is genetic. I don't have a large neck (my ENT measured it recently and it's still not large). I was born with a narrow jaw which can't hold my tongue and it sneaks into my throat at night, causing obstructive apneas. According to my ENT surgeon, allergist, and dentist- this is actually a fairly common cause.

    Spot on information.
I've been on a VPAP for 5 years now , definitely a big difference.
My current issue now is that I have a difficult time trying to wake up.
It almost seems like I'm in some sort of other dream like dimension.
I know it sounds really strange, I just wondered if this is common in patients with corrected sleep apnea or could it be a symptom of something else.
    Thanks for the great video.

Having a CPAP changed my life. I had no idea I was killing myself. It killed my brother in his 50's. I'm 59. I never smoked, drink, lead a clean lifestyle. My aunt started with a CPAP maybe 10 years ago and it saved her life. She has always been very healthy, runs everyday and is thin. I'd bet she is in top 1% for good shape & health in her age group. Apnea was killing her despite her good health habits.

Make sense...I know I’m going though it and I tried the CPAP but I panic with this thing in my face. I will look into the mouth guard but it’s expensive and I don’t have insurance. I found sound frequency on RUclips that helps also someone mentioned sleeping with a cervical collar. This last option is inexpensive, i will start there. There is also exercise from this book called Meditation as medicine. There’s a lot of alternatives out there i will look until i find what works for me.

Saying people with sleep apnea fall asleep easily is a rash generalization. This kind of assertion may prevent people who have insomnia from getting evaluated for sleep apnea. I recently got diagnosed with sleep apnea yet I have insomnia. Your other information may be accurate, but I'm sure I'm not unique.
Also, I'm a few pounds overweight, but not obese. My doctor told me my sleep apnea likely a function of aging. I'm 2 months in with CPAP and am hoping I can get more energy in the long run and not just drop my extra pounds, but get more fit. I am just lucky to have genes that tend toward the slender side.
My Epworth sleepiness scale has never been high either.

I feel I have had sleep apnea for a while now, and it has finally been diagnosed. I also have asthma and PCOS and the nurse told me there seems to be some connection with the hormonal/glucose issues caused by pcos and this sleep disorder. I would sleep, but never peacefully just wake up 36 times a hr or stop breathing 15 times an hr. I think people always seem to think it’s caused by being overweight even my dr crudely told me I needed to lose weight. I’m just waiting on my insurance and machine right now… very hard to do feeling the way I do. I think I have had this for a long time, possibly as a teenager.

So, here's a question: let's say you're overweight, and when you get the sleep study, you're diagnosed with apnea, so you get one of the CPAP/APAP/etc machines. Let's say that you are able to use the machine such that you're sleeping well. Your cortisol levels drop, you have more energy, you don't have the carb cravings, and you're then able to eat better, exercise, and lose a bunch of weight.
What percentage of people are then able to dispense with the breathing machine?

I'm not a doctor but I have sleep apnea and have been looking into this topic for years. I'm also overweight, and I've been told repeatedly by doctors that one of the best things I can do to lessen or remove my sleep apnea is to lose weight.
Over the years I've talked to probably 20 or so sleep apnea suffers and half have said the CPAP was a life-changing solution for them. Absolutely raving about it. So I'd say definitely give it a try.
But if the CPAP doesn't solve your problem, remember that I said "half". The others said it didn't do anything for them (I'm one of those). I've read that there are actually studies that bear this out - the number I read was that 40% of patients prescribed CPAPs don't use them.
The field likes to quote a different statistic, that CPAPs are "95% effective". I suspect there's some confusion, that maybe "95% effective" doesn't mean how many patients it works for, but rather how good a job it does for the patients that it does work for.
Again, I'm not a doctor and this isn't medical advice. The only reason I'm saying this is that it can really do a number on your head if the doctor says it should solve the problem but that you're just not trying hard enough. You should try, and try hard - the CPAP can take a lot of getting used to, but man, from what people tell me it's worth it!
But if it still doesn't work, don't assume it's you, and don't assume it's hopeless. Talk to your doctor and try other approaches. Keep trying other approaches until you find what works for you.

Good Question. I had been an extremely loud snorer since childhood. I would even duct tape my mouth when I shared apartments as a young single trying not to be so loud. Later when married and trying to have a child, was given testosterone shots for six months, then the severe symptoms started. Been on cpap 18 yrs. Guess will always be. Back to normal life in daytime. Guess will always be on machine. But what is causing this epidemic? Something in our food chain? The Dr.even said it wasn't even on the radar when she started caeeer. I would like to know why so widespread today.

Another Apnea symptom is waking up or having a headache during the morning. I have apnea, and getting a cpap was a life changer. Also, getting used to the mask is made easier by wearing it, alone, in the evening, before bed. This gets your body used to it. Been a cpap user for over 15 years. Get it ! You'll live longer, if nothing else!

I use a cpap and still close to my heaviest weight ever. However if I didn't have my machine I would be much worse off, possibly in danger of getting a heart attack. I get good sleep- not as good as when I was 100 pounds lighter, but still good enough to get me through the day.

You may need a BIPAP MACHINE instead of a CPAP. Talk to your Doctor about it. A CPAP Only controls the pressure in one direction, while a Bi-PAP controls the pressure while you inhale as well as when you exhale. BIPAP Machine is likely the key to treating your sleep apnia

Thank you for this. I suspected my weight gain had to do with my recent diagnosis of sleep apnea (don't yet have the CPAP machine as I just got diagnosed last month and am in Canada so they are slow here). I have fallen asleep even standing up .. all day long I am so tired. WHat makes it worse for me is I am on dialysis so any weight gain in dialysis they assume is fluid since I don't have kidneys and do not pee. But I was gaining so much I knew a lot of it was also true weight. Some fluid weight too as in the middle of the night my throat gets so dry and I tend to waike up every hour because my sleep is that bad.

Apparently according to others I don’t snore like i used to anymore but I have some serious heart issues that i had developed. I want to get another sleep study to see if maybe i no longer have sleep apnea.

I have a form of sleep apnea. I don't produce saliva when I sleep and I wake up every hour with extremely dry mouth so that I have to take a drink of water every hour. I've talked to several doctors but they have no answer for me. They say ask a dentist because they know of the diseases of the mouth. My dentist just brushed it off as old age. I'm spending about 16 hours a day to get 8 hours sleep. This is not helping my health. Any suggestions?

Three and a half years ago I had heart bypass surgery. Immediately after that, even while I was still in the hospital, I could not sleep. I remember telling one of the Dr's that the surgery went so well that I have so much energy that I don't want to sleep. He just gave me a funny look. Since then, I hardly sleep over 2 to 4 hrs a night. I always wake up about 2 or 2:30am. I got a home sleep apnea test done for 3 nights. I quit breathing 30 times in those 3 nights. You have to remember that I was only sleeping 2 to 4 hrs a night. I have all of the symptoms that you mentioned. Now I'm waiting to get the money together so I can get the machine. Its really hard trying to go to work under these conditions. Thanks for sharing your video.

I stop breathing 90x an hr as per my sleep study. what can i do thats not invasive yet just as effective? If i didnt have these issuses with the cpap i would use it. I felt the difference during the time of usage. where can i get the mouth piece - is that a dental thing? and they have what looks like bandaids w vents as an alternative, would that be just as good or close to?......

Actually for me I never had any issues with sleeping or even snoring until I put on 80 pounds. The last 30 or so pounds is what set off OSA for me. So in my case it wasn't OSA that caused me to gain weight but the other way around. I wasn't taught as a young child how to eat a healthy diet so as a result I have lived on a processed food diet most of my life and it has turned more towards emotional eating now as an adult. It's crazy how sugar and carbs can increase our dopamine & serotonin levels and for me due to feeling so low and negative my body began to crave that stuff constantly as a way to elevate my mood. There are so many variables to what can cause someone to have OSA and I think mine started due to emotional trauma that resulted in me eating too much of the wrong foods to elevate my extremely low and depressing mood thus causing me to gain a lot of weight over the course of about 6 yrs therefore contributing to me developing OSA. Now if I can just train myself to eat a more healthier diet and not give into my desires for the junk food, then I can begin the journey of losing weight and eventually factoring in some exercise as my energy levels improve from eating the things my body needs and therefore lose enough weight to reverse the OSA thus helping me get back down to a healthy weight. The sad reality for me was allowing my flesh to control my desires instead of allowing the Spirit of God to take control which would have prevented all of this in the first place. I'm sorry but there is no way I can afford to pay $300.00 up front for a machine and then $80.00/mth to rent the machine. I mean seriously??????? What the heck is wrong with insurance companies?!?!?!?!? I tell you their love for money is costing the lives of so many people every year and it just makes me sick ugh!!!

Great video! After 15 years of suspected sleep apnea, I finally got off my butt and had a sleep study done. My score was ~45 events per/hour. Last night was my first time using my CPAP (ResMed Air Sense 10 with heated tube) and the results were great. My nasal mask fit perfectly and worked well. I have a Fitbit that records sleeping habits and I was getting 3-5 hours of very disturbed sleep on average and last night I slept through the whole night, 11 hours! Even better, I made it without the typical bathroom break or two in the middle of the night. I'm typically a mouth breather because of congestion and was concerned about being able to use a nose mask, but it worked great and I didn't have the typical stuffy nose when I woke up. I think I really needed a humidifier a long time ago, so this fixes that! To my surprise, my alarm woke me up today. I'm always awake before my alarm, so this was something very new. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but I'm really happy that I'm on the road to recovery. Thanks for this very informative video. :thumbs up: /subscribed

Went got new full mask as I breath through mouth most cause my nostrils inflammation so bad with mask and lying down. And still awake tonight at 3:30 a.m. but had it on few hours. Frustrated. I’d prob love nasal pillow but I can’t breath out of nose. Recent issue when lying down. Congrats to you on ur success. Wish I had ur luck. Any opinions?

    • @tscooter22
      @tscooter22 6 лет назад

My nose might be stuffed up on one side before putting the CPAP on but after 20 minutes or so, the humidity from the CPAP starts clearing it up. If I'm REALLY stuffed up I use a bit of Nasal saline spray to help clear things up a bit. I get along best with the nasal pillow mask now. I toss and turn a lot and the regular nasal mask that covered my whole nose tended to leak a lot when sleeping on my side. I'd imagine a whole face mask would be even worse unless you sleep on your back most of the time. I don't know how your doctor set your CPAP up, but mine is set to go from ~4-20 (I forget exactly) so it starts out slowly and steps up as time goes along. It's possible they set yours up to a fixed pressure. My point being, as the pressure goes up, the easier it is for me to breathe through my nose. Whatever you end up with, good luck! It seems like everyone has a little trouble figuring out what type of mask works best for them. The CPAP store where I bought mine had a no questions asked exchange police on masks.

I thought I'd have trouble -but i Didn't! I was so sleep deprived and knew I was being watched over by the techs. I Gave it to God and I knocked out within 10 minutes. I have broken ribs, smacked my teeth thru my lip, fallen out of chairs, gotten a concussion etc etc over and over due to sleep apnea going into narcolepsy - but its pure sleep deprivation. It's taken time from me and my family/grandchild. It makes me so upset that I can't trust my body/brain to stay awake - even using Provigil. I am waiting to try the BiPap machine next but I doubt it will work any better then the Cpap. I need the implant "Inspire" inside my chest (like a Pacemaker). I just can't handle sleeping with the mask and tubes. Its worth the testing - have your doctor prescribe a 5mg of Ativan to relax you for the study. You need a baseline for doctor to work from.

I found out I had sleep apnea when I volunteered for a research study. I had no idea prior to this but was exhausted ALL THE TIME with severe brain fog, I never could figure out why! I did a proper in-lab sleep study and was diagnosed with REM-related OSA (& parasomnia, I dream-enact & sleep talk) with desaturated to 77% and 75 episodes/hr during REM. I started CPAP right away (followed by titration sleep study). SO MUCH DIFFERENCE!! No more fatigue (zero!) and my mental clarity has returned! I never thought I could wear the mask (I have nasal mask) but it's surprisingly comfortable. No weight loss yet but it's just the beginning of my journey. If you think you have sleep apnea, please do not hesitate to be assessed, it really does change your life for the better.

I know for a fact that sleep apnea and weight problems are connected...
March this year I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep study revealed that I was only breathing 1 hour and 56 minutes in that sleep study. And averaged 89 apnoeas per hour! I was horrified! At this time I weighed in at 162.5kg.
Bought a CPAP machine in April. It is now October and I now weigh 145kg! I have not changed a thing with my diet or my activity level. And I still drink an average of 30 beers per week. lol.
The sleep study people said that it was because I was restricting myself of so much oxygen that my metabolism basically shut down.
All I can say, if you are always tired, waking up at night in pools of sweat and waking up in the morning feeling like you just went ten rounds with Mike Tyson, go and get a sleep study done ASAP! After the first night on the CPAP machine I felt like a million bucks!
