    What is sleep apnea?
    Sleep apnea is not really a sleep problem. It’s a sleep symptom. It’s an air obstructive pathway problem. People with sleep apnea can’t breathe because there is something obstructing the pathways of air getting into their lungs. If you can’t breathe, you can’t sleep.
    What causes sleep apnea?
    1. Atrophy that obstructs the breathing pathways
    2. Allergies
    3. Sinus congestion
    4. High cortisol (high stress)
    5. Fungus
    Home remedies for sleep apnea:
    • Avoid milk products
    • Avoid foods that cause inflammation
    • Avoid sugar
    • Avoid carbohydrates
    • Royal jelly (for allergies)
    • Cortisol support (for high cortisol)
    • Build up the good bacteria in your gut (for fungus)
    • Apple cider vinegar

    I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 5 years ago, given a CPAP machine. I was at 305lbs and literally waking up gasping for air. I went on keto in the beginning of 2020 and went from 305 to 233lbs in about 9 months. I have no more sleep apnea; although I still have trouble falling asleep (hard to relax) I no longer lose my breath.🤗

    Stay on your CPAP until it is proven that you no longer have sleep apnea. Low oxygen is devastating to your heart and other organs. I was diagnosed with severe centralized sleep apnea, my brain was not signaling my lungs to breath when sleeping. I got completely off sugar, milk and most carbs and dropped from 40 apnea events an hour to about 14. With the CPAP I'm down to 2 per hour. As I lose weight I will continue to monitor and may ween off the CPAP when proven safe.

      How do you monitor frequently? I did the home study and have apnea, which I knew I did.
      I'm just wondering how I can monitor the apnea when I don't have the equipment to do that?

      I was sent the Cpap and all that goes with it. I haven't used it yet . Maybe there is a way to tell from the machine?
      Otherwise how could anyone know if their apnea is improving??

    The 2 main things that opened up my sinus was 1. ditching milk (mucous production) and 2. Intermittent Fasting. People don't recognize the effects of Insulin Resistance on the respiratory system. Thank you for your videos :)

      The Number 1 thing I did that cleared up my sinuses was a daily nasal rinse, using a squeeze bottle instead of a netty pot. Number 2 is Claritin.
      I had already tamed the food thing.

    I have medium severe sleep apnea and don’t have a weight issue. I couldn’t use my cpap because of severe sinus blockage due to a collapsed sinus valve and I’ve been struggling on so many fronts. A few days ago, I was watching a Dr Mandell video where he mentioned it’s best to sleep on a the left side of you have sleep apnea. I tried this and I’ve been having the best sleeps in months. I’ve tried everything for years and was amazed that one little trick addressed my issue. Don’t give up hope whatever your health issues are and keep searching for solutions! Good luck to all.     Hi, I just want to share what's happened to me. 3 weeks ago I started a very low cal low carb diet with intermittent fasting mainly for weight loss. Since then, reading and watching to learn more I've gone keto and omad. I've gone from 318lbs to 291 which is great but I've noticed my sleep apnea seems to have gotten much better if not disappeared. I've had a problem of flakey irritated skin on one of my feet for years and that has gone. I've had labrynthitis for 18 months which was slowly getting better and within the 3 weeks has improved massively. My energy levels are up, my mood is up and I feel better than I have for years. If someone made a pill that gave these effects people would pay anything for it. At least I would. The total cost to me has been a saving of around £50 (70 Dollars) a week which will pay for my new wardrobe I'm going to need😁.

    I am thin though for a long while I had a fatty liver. I ate a terrible diet of sugar, high carbs, high unsaturated oils, and so forth. I had a stroke at 52 which after getting out of the hospital, caused me to change to a whole food diet and eventually low carb, very low sugar, and intermittent fasting. Also no unsaturated oil, high saturated fats, and little to no grains. Or processed foods. My nearly lifelong sleep apnea disappeared, I sleep regularly, lost all my allergies and have not been sick in any way, even stomach or head aches, in two years so far. No pharmaceutical drugs at all. Oh yeah, no more fatty liver, either.

      going down the same road with the fasting and food diet, also doing earthing blanket at night, sleep much better know. the blanket works a treat, sleep in about 5 mins.

      @@gracerosales138 - lose weight around your waist, which means it comes off everywhere else first. Increase insulin sensitivity, which means you're intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting really only doable if you cut out carbs. Just keep at it even if you fail just keep trying and it will happen for you. Never give up, if it's not working try another way.

      Try the ACV in juice instead of water. Something strong like cran-apple disguises the taste better. Then brush your teeth. Being very acidic, ACV is hell on tooth enamel. Best wishes.

    I’m thin and have sleep apnea. When I fall asleep the muscles holding my tongue relax so that my tongue falls back into my throat and cuts off my air. Gasping for air. My life changed when I got on a cpap!

    This is a real issue for me. I've had sleep apnea for years it's only now that I'm trying to change my diet, eat healthier, exercise more. I'm lactose intolerant so I don't drink cow's milk only soya, almond and oat milk. Sleeping with plants sounds fantastic. Watching from London. 🇬🇧

      Also, some say having certain pillows can help like a cervical pillow like the Elviros one. I also heard that some pillow wedges that raise you up when in bed can help, as well. I don't drink milk, but I love cheese, but I've cut back by 50%.

    I been having this issue for a while now and your videos have taught me that it's most likely from my 'sugar addiction.' I would wake up everyday feeling as if I didn't sleep whatsoever. I started to take away the sugar and I would wake up feeling refreshed. I would then go back to eating more sugar, and I noticed that if I go overboard then the sleep apnea comes back. Sugar, milk, and grains eaten in small amounts is OK.

      Excellent observation and information. I've been on CPAP therapy since last year but as of recently have just begun to take it seriously. I'm definitely going to monitor this!!

      @@ameeromedia5883 ok so update: my doc prescribed me a food allergy test, and it ended up being foods that I would eat on a daily basis like chicken and black beans. Those foods are what cause allergies, and the allergies cause sleep apnea. Hope this helped!

    was on a long fast without food , just juice and liquids, i noticed my sleep apnea went away. when i started eating again it came back. i went on a low carb diet now and it is not as bad as it was, possibly sugar was causing it.

      Chris Kinch If she was doing a leafy green vegetable juice fast, then she probably wasn't consuming all that much sugar. Does sound like a food allergy though. So your suggestion of removing sugar is spot on.

    I am as diagnosed with valley fever (fungus) last January my pulmonologist did not know how to treat. He said I develop asthma. This past week I was diagnosed with sleep apnea per my cardiologist. But no one then care in the real cause of everything. We are so blessed with your videos and information. Thank you

    Although I do believe in some of the things Dr. Berg is mentioning are very helpful, I MUST say that while you are healing (if we can) from Sleep Apnea please please do not just follow this protocol of health. You must do what you need to do to help your body recover WHILE incorporating the healthier way of eating and lifestyle. I myself have developed heart problems (and other conditions from sleep apnea) and my way of eating has been low carb/Keto healthy for years!!

    I was diagnosed with sleep apnea because of a narrow airway. It's a structural/anatomical defect I was born with. I appreciate your explanation of the possible causes and remedies, but I will need to use a CPAP machine regardless for the rest of my life. I do agree with you, but I wanted to add my condition as a cause as well. Thank you for your ongoing educational videos.

      The narrow airway is not a defect u were born with. You developed one because you are a mouth breather. Which made your whole face grow deformed. I’m guessing u have a “long face” with weak profile. Classic mouth breathing look. Nasal breathing and proper tounge poster is the answer. Unfroutnly changes will take a long time to occur as you are now an adult. If you nasal breathed as a child you wouldn’t have this issue.

      I am not diagnosed, but I'm pretty sure I have apnea as well. According to my watch, I wake up quite a bit and my dentist told me I have a very small airway as well. I run 20 miles a week and lift 2X a week. I average about 17,000 steps a day, so some people are doomed to have this condition regardless of fitness level.

    When I was 30 pounds overweight I went on the Whole30 diet to first rid myself of inflammation before sticking with No Sugar No Grains, and my sleep apnea turned off like a light switch after 3 weeks. I had only lost some water, but the inflammation was gone. The only time apnea returns is if I eat high carb at night and have not recovered from the inflammation yet.

    Interesting. I’m 51 and have a big snoring problem. I’ve tried a few different things but then realised I must have high cortisol from stress and just started taking Apple cider vinegar so watch this space. I will also put plants in my room, thank you

    Just needs to clarify that this will apply to OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea), however this does not apply to CSA (Central Sleep Apnea) which is neurological and is not produce due to obstruction but due abnormal signal send (or NOT send) to the body to actually breath. Also please HIGHLIGHT that all these advices should be performed WHILE you are doing more formal treatment with a Doctor specialized in Sleep so he can determine through a polysomnography (sorry if I got it mispelled) what type of Apnea do you have. It's really important to do a mitigation treatment like using a CPAP machine...which will improve significantly your sleep and daily life (remove the sleepiness and exhaustion during the day which is a very common symptom of OSA/CSA).
    Using a CPAP or mouthguard devices (which works in some cases) are key to avoid risks of heart decease and accidents due to the sleepiness and lack of focus the apnea produces.
    Of course you advices are very recommended and should be followed, however those takes quite some time (especially losing weight) so it should not be the only approach. Mitigation should be always needed.
    I have OSA myself, have been properly diagnosted and been using a CPAP machine for more than 2 years now. It changed completely my life as I have energy, focus and I'm not sleepy during the day. However I don't like been dependent of a machine to breath at night and not being able to go camping or have a vacations without carrying the damned thing. That's why I'm following a diet based on your advise and others. I have removed almost completely wheat and dairy and I'm following a Keto Diet combined with Intermitten fasting under a 16:8 protocol. So far I've lost nearly 20 lbs and have another 20 to go for my ideal weigth and I can assure everyone it helps with the apnea.. still using the machine but my snoring (when not using it) decreased a lot (says my wife) and I'm hoping tha after I lose another 20 lbs or so.. I can get near to not needing the machine (crossing my fingers).
    Thanks for the advice and remember to include also all the necessary information so people can take the right decisions on how to treat themselves.

      Cristian Andres Diaz have you been evaluated to see if you could use the oral appliance in place of your cpap? I used a cpap for over a year and was taking it off in my sleep. My dr sent me to a specialized dentist who makes these oral appliances for sleep apnea and it’s been great!! I didn’t even know this was an option. I’ve now had it for over a year and I love it. Easy to bring in your bathroom bag and no more worrying about keeping it clean, or power outages or camping.

      Christie Toole i have tried and with very limited success, it helps a little bit but it does not remove the apnea, i may give it a try now that i lost like 30 lbs .
      To avoid taking off the mask i found that using the philips respironics dreamwear nasal mask is the best.. as long as you are not a mouth breather... since i’m not has been great.
      Anyhow i may give it another try to the mouth piece.. thanks for sharing!!

      I am guess that sleep apnea is a symptom of stress. Like you, I want to get off of the CPAP. Funny thing I have been doing pretty much everything doctor Berg talks about. No dairy, no gluten, and cut way way back on my carb.intake. I also practice the 16/8 IF 5 days a week. I take ACV, but not every day, and no Royal Jelly😳.
      I should not have to be dependent on a machine to safely sleep at night!
      I have just started my odyssey into why people suffer from this affliction. What is the root cause??

    I stopped using my CPAP due to the coughing it caused. I wear a nasal strip every night now. It really does open my sinuses and Im able to breathe freely thru my nose.

      What exactly is a nasal strip? Ive recently TRIED using a CPAP machine but so far without success except for one 3 hour period (in 2 weeks!!!). I'm so fed up.

      @@thefuzzfactor2989 one brand name is “Breathe Right”. It is a small adhesive strip that has plastic stents that pull open the nasal passages. It goes on just below the bridge of your nose. Just make sure your face is clean with no oils/moisturizer so they adhere.

      Have you made any adjustments to your machine? I googled my issues with the Cpap and was able to resolve my discomfort pretty quickly. I’d try that too.

    Dear Dr. Eric, I have had sleep apnea for over fifty years and I had laser surgery (LAUP) twice. I was assured that it was "Fixed" but NO! I continued on a CPAP for most of that time. This year I came off the CPAP because no one cares. That is I do not have a bed partner so no complaints. I can assure you that I have no noticeable obstruction. But my brain dozes off at times and I stop breathing. So I guess I will go back on a CPAP. Thanks for the post.

    My husband started having a pretty bad sleep apnea for about a month. He'd wake up every minute gasping for air. After we figured out that it was the hot salsa he enjoyed with tortilla chips, he stopped eating that brand. It's been 6 months and he hasn't had sleep apnea since he stopped.

    I can confirm that you are correct. I have sleep apnea but I also have Gerd and asthma. Because of GERD and Asthma I changed my diet completely and I do not eat any carbs or processed sugars and very few starches. I've lost 60 lb in the last seven months, have far less breathing issues and my sleep apnea is basically gone. I used to stop breathing 30 to 60 times an hour according to my machine and when I wake up now and look at my machine on the report it says I stop breathing 1 to 3 times an hour "5 or under is normal and safe". Thank you for putting this information out there and I hope other people will take it seriously.
    Also I would like to point out that my numbers got tremendously better within a month of starting my new eating habits and I was down into the single digits That was far before I ever lost the weight.

    Thank you dr Berg for this video. The puzzle about the causes of my husband apnea is now solved. 15 years ago he was given 10 sessions of acupuncture treatments which stopped his apneas right away. He is 74 now, slim and fit all his life.
    We followed the treatment with elimination of dairy from his diet due to his hay fever. The allergy is gone long time ago. He has been semi-vegeterian for 25 years. The intermittent fasting we implemented few years ago keeps us feeling even better.

    I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea 3 years ago. I just put my CPAP machine away for good! Started @ ~ 200 lbs, 5’7”. Did I.F. for a year then KETO after that. For me Keto was my life line to have a normal life again. BTW I lost 35 lbs

      I’m so happy for you!! I’m 225 now and I just started gasping for air at night. My plan is to keto off 25 lbs or more because this was never an issue till I got fat. The dr diagnosed me with OSA but I don’t even snore.. I just feel so bloated and uncomfortable I quit breathing.

      Congratulations! That’s pretty outstanding. I would also strongly recommend as much raw, uncooked fruits and vegetables as possible. They have massive benefits in terms of micro nutrients and fiber (both of which are missing in meat and cheese, etc.).

    Thank you Dr Berg, I am using a sleep Apnea machine and, my doctor told me it's due to my weight, after listening to you, it is the stress that causing my sleep apnea, I will cut out the milk , cheese, biscuits and drink herbal tea. I was in a bad way in and out of hospital, the informations are very helpful to me. I am trying to lose weight. My downfalls are all that you have mentioned, milk, cheese etc...I will try.     Best medical guideline presentation I ever came across. Each sentence is loaded with valuable information. And I appreciate his soft tone of voice. There are other MD videos where the doc is blathering for the sake of hearing his own voice. I tried to stay on the carb reduced diet but found it hurt my stomach. Starchy carbs assuaged that discomfort as did cooking to softening veggies. I will also try the apple cider solution.

    I have decreased lung capacity which causes me to hypo ventilate at night. I've been told that I will always need the CPAP even if I lose weight. I 'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Since going Keto, my asthma symptoms have dramatically decreased and I feel better sleeping.

      @DA lif3 basically put, a flutter machine. It increases the strength and capacity of your lungs and strengthens the muscles in your mouth. Alongside this there is also a video on RUclips for mouth exercises for sleep apnea. Both work wonders! Trust me. They're life changing. I also take zenwise digestive enzymes for gerd. It eradicated my gerd and I had it for two years!!

    Thank you for this video. My partner is not who you would expect to have breathing issues and he has borderline OSA, but for sure UARS and hypoapneas which are really wrecking his overall quality of sleep. He's fit and thin, but we recently found out he has ENS...due to a past botched sinus surgery he had as a teenager. He's grateful to finally have a diagnosis for his years of poor sleep, but we are now trying to deal with treatments for the ENS which insurance doesn't cover. It's hard as a partner to watch my person feel so depleted and l think somewhat depressed daily due to poor sleep. I just wanted to share. Ty Dr. Berg! I love your videos! ❤️

    I have severe sleep apnea. I also have spinal issues which makes it impossible to sleep on my back. I forgo the CPAP and use blankets to prop myself up into a 45° angle. Since I've started doing this, I have mostly stopped snoring; which is a sign of sleep apnea. I couldn't afford a wedge, so I made one. Now I sleep better than I ever did with my machine. Hopefully this helps someone else out there.

      @@willjames618 I sleep mostly on my left because of right shoulder pain, but I still toss and turn, so really both sides. I put a couple of blankets stacked like a wedge under my pillow. Last night I was only at about a 30° angle and I still didn't snore at all. Slept great. You should try it!

      @@Jackie1111 I stack a couple of pillows on top of each other, then I tuck a blanket or two around the pillows, tuck it under the mattress on both sides to hold it in place. I toss and turn and most nights I have to fix it part way through the night because I've moved it all. But it's still better than wearing that machine! Ugh!

    Dr. Berg, I was broken down in year 1999 and was not able to work for almost 3 years because my doctor did not suspect sleep apnea as the cause because I was and still is slim. When diagnosed of sleep apnea I did not know such illness exist. Prescribed CPAP and on the path to recovery. But short lived because after one year of success, I started to remove the CPAP mask unconsciously after I fell asleep. This removal get worse by the year up to this day. Consulted many specialists over the years to no avail. After watching your this video, it is making sense what I should try. I will report to you on the result. Anyway, because of this years long struggle I had long lost my career as a professional accountant.

    I have said it before on one of your other videos about this sleep condition and I'll mention it again here on this post. I have sleep apnea as diagnosed by a sleep specialist team at a sleep clinic. I have a CPAP machine that I use 'intermittently' because I hate the damn mask that I have to wear, and I can't use just the nose piece because of nose issues caused by sports in my youth.
    At any rate, I am of average build, slim, eat pretty well and take a barrage of vitamin supplements for years, including B. Now you can believe what you want, but none of those supplements do anything for my sleep habits. When my sleep study was conducted, I was told that I actually stopped breathing at one point for 44 seconds (good if you are a diver I guess!), but a lot of the apnea is caused by a failure of the brain to send signals to the rest of the body that is in a very relaxed state. It doesn't matter if I am on my side or on my back, none of those sleeping positions make any sort of difference. The long term determination is if I don't wear the CPAP that I could eventually end up with heart issues. So the trade off is wear the uncomfortable mask, or deal with heart issues later.
    People need to know that if they have apnea to see a specialists and go through the proper testing methods to determine what the underline issue may be. Food for thought.

      first make sure you have been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep apnea and not with Central Sleep apnea.. Dr berg advise will only help with obstructive apnea... additionally please do this in parallel with the treatment your doctor may gave you and if it helps you may discard the treatment both don't replace medical treatment with this do both (I have sleep apnea and is dangerous if not properly treated)

    I have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I'm a little overweight now but not to much at all but extra weight has made it worse. If you have sleep apnea, the first thing is get a CPAP machine. Then 100% look at fixing other issues. Sleep Apnea is so bad for the heart and CPAP will mitigate the almost everything immediately. After CPAP you have more energy to exercise and get healthier. Some healthy people have it anyway, but mostly a lifestyle problem, but not all the time.

    What about mucous build up?? And sleep position?? Neti pot irrigation with salt water helps me TREMENDOUSLY with sinus blockage. I've been sleeping better since I've started sleeping on my side, but I read somewhere that having your head elevated above the rest of your body, a position that you can achieve with an adjustable reclining bed, or wedge pillows, reduces sinus blockage. I've noticed that I breath easier through my nose when I'm actually on my back, even though that position is more conducive to tracheal blockage caused by the tongue relaxing and collapsing backward. Sleeping in an inclined position is supposed to eliminate this. I'll be trying that tonight. I don't drink milk, I never have any sugar that is not from fruits, no wheats, grains, pastas, cereal, crackers, biscuits, waffles etc... But I still snore....although not as much with after salt water irrigation and a nasal strip. I'm hoping sleeping on an incline will improve things.

      digital1 ministry9. I tried putting fresh squeezed lime juice im both nostrils. It was horrible. A few minutes later a " ton " of mucus came out. I have mever had better breathing during the day. I don't know about the night because my daughter says I snore so loud she can't sleep.

      something you are eating is creating you sleep apnea, probably fructose from fruits. Try to remove for some time and see what happens.

    Thanks for the advice, will definitely be trying some of these.
    About the plants and oxygen. AFAIK plants release oxygen during the day time whilst photosynthesising, and release CO2 at night via cellular respiration. There are some types of plant that work the other way round, but they are not the norm. However house plants are probably not going to have much of an effect either way for two reasons a) you would need *a lot* of plants to make a difference. In a closed system an average person would need about 700 house plants plants, all in the right part of their growth cycle, to maintain the O2/CO2 balance to sustain life. So how many houseplants are. you going to have in your room? Probably closer to 7 than 70. So your plants might make 1% difference. but then b) you aren't in a closed system and the way gasses and pressure work any significant change in O2/CO2 balance will get evened out very quickly.
    Snake plants, aloe vera, and spider plants are all examples of plants that can produce O2 at night. Not sure of average rates, but would be related to growth speed.

    Dear Dr. I listened to this with interest, since I was diagnosed with this sleep issue. I could not sleep with the cpap machine, so I tried other things like a Ozone machine putting Ozone in the room before bed time, etc However I can not agree with the plants you sleep with, unless you only sleep during the day. Plants only produce O2 when they photosynthetise in sunlight. They don't produce O2 at night

    I manage to solve my sleep apnea which i suffered for years until 2 years back. I just take Lechitin 600mg which contains Phosphatidyl Choline (PC) 210 mg every night before going to sleep. Really no more hard snoring and i can enjoy deep sleep for the last 2 years. Thanks Allah for showing me the solution.

    I gotta try something. I had a sleep study done 5 days ago and was diagnosed with sever sleep apnea (over 120 an hour). I have gained about 40 pounds in the last 6 months and was tired all the time, if I closed my eyes longer than 4 seconds I would start dreaming no matter what I was doing. I hope this is a wake up call for me to get my diet in check.

    Careful... Not all plants are suitable for bedrooms. Plants are known to produce oxigen, but most of them consume oxigen during the night. Make sure you get the right ones

    Dr Berg, you left out 4 structural causes: 1. Dropped soft palate 2. Tonsils 3. Tongue 4. Constriction in the nasal bones. The dropped soft palate can be corrected with cranial adjusting. The tonsils and tongue can be corrected with soft tissue manipulation. The nasal specific procedure can correct the constriction in the nasal bones. All of these corrections can be done by chiropractors and osteopaths who are trained in these methods.

    This is amazing information! Thank you very much Dr. Berg for another insightful video. I will say in confirmation of what he is saying here, that I recently went on a five day cheese eating spree where I ate cheese twice a day every day and the result was the two worst nights of my life in regards to sleep apnea. I struggled with understanding why they were so bad, but this helps me put all of the pieces to the puzzle together.
    I love cheese, I love pizza, pasta, lattes… But I don’t love them enough to not sleep! I’m going to try this…

    I have had bad sinuses for years, haven't slept a full night in a long time. Took over counter sleep meds, talk to different doctors, finally a doc told me just the other day , you may have sleep apnea. They want me to have a sleep study to find out.     I used to love my pap machine, then something happened when I became a widow, putting the mask on felt like I was being suffocated so because of this fear, I stopped using it. There are other masks, I tried, it does not matter, once something is in my nose or on it, it feels like I can't breathe. After listening to your video I am grateful and hopeful some of remedies may work, will try them. Will also get a plant in my room, and wondering if having a room vaporizer putting moisture in the air would help as well, will try, thank you, Alda

    For me it was mold spores. The minute I located and eliminated the mould, I had no mouth breathing or sleep apnea any longer. Gone. Sleep with my mouth closed now..naturally, without effort. My nostrils would feel luke collapsing nose clear the collapsing of nostrils history.

    I am not overweight but I do have sleep apnea. I have been doing your suggested vaporizer treatment twice a day...and my thickened congestion and apnea are improving. Only 3 days in so far...feels good.

    I have severe sleep apnea. Yes I'm overweight and can greatly benefit from everything in this video. I'm not trying to undermine all these great tips, they all sound very compelling. What I will say is, by far, the most life changing best thing you can do if you have sleep apnea is to buy a good CPAP machine. One that automatically cranks up the pressure as you sleep until you no longer have apneas, and that also collects data that you can look at to see what pressure you needed and how many apneas you had overnight. The reasons for this are simple. 1. You absolutely need to get quality sleep immediately and can't wait for the long-term benefits to kick in. Sleep is just too important. a CPAP machine is truly life changing I can't express that enough. You will feel like you never knew what true sleep was. 2. Your CPAP machine will help you monitor your progress as you make some of these life changes because of the sleep data you get. 3. And this is the biggest thing, when done properly, a CPAP machine actually teaches you how to breathe better. I can't go anywhere without my CPAP, but when I fall asleep and forget to put it on, I sleep much much better than I used to prior to getting one. The most important step here is to use a nose only CPAP machine. Absolutely no full mask. I use the Philips wisp. I don't care if you're a mouth breather, so was I, get that out of your head. Learn to use the nose cushion mask, it's much more comfortable and it teaches you to close your mouth and breath from your nose. It gets tough when you're sick, but it actually helps clear your nose believe it or not. And this is the most life changing aspect of a CPAP, it really teaches you how to close your mouth and breathe from your nose. It's so good that I can't sleep without it, but I can sleep sooo much better without it than I used to because my body has just learned how to breathe. I could never imagine sleeping on my back before... that would have been a terrible morning. Now that's the only way I sleep and I feel so refreshed when I wake up. Hope this convinces some of you.

      I have this auto cpap machine but still tired .it is full mask..So your saying a nose only mask will improve my sleep..
      As I use the machine 8.10 hrs aday still wake up tired .I am considering uvula surgery tonsil removal and setoplasty

      @@ashmazad857 if the mask fit % you are getting in your stats is 99%, you should be fine. Monitor the AHI to make sure it stays very low every night. Below 2 average is where you want to be. If your mask fit or AHI are off, you need a calibration. Either a mask change or the automatic pressure is not building up to where it needs to be.

      My cpap is resmed airsense elite .it is auto set so max pressure is 20...ive seen it reach 18.5 pressure whilst wearing full.mask.I still feel tired and have to have caffeine to do daily duties.
      Is uvula..tonsils ..septoplasty operations a good option. For better health and sleep

      I received my cpap machine about 10 days ago but have had only one night where I slept about 3 hours with it. Had a score of 2 events per hour. I fihd moetky it doesnt seem tovwork, keeps me awake or wakes me up. Its a full face mask.

    I had this for years and tried everything. Two things worked (steroid nasal spray from my doc) but I was concerned about using that long term. My pharmacist recommended a seawater nasal spray. Saved my life and my sleep.
    Turns out the air in my home was too dry. Google also guessed that and was recommending drinking warm water but nothing works as well as the seawater nasal spray. Good luck!

    Some research also indicates chronic hyperventilation upsetting CO2 levels in the blood. Buteyko breathing exercises have helped many people normalise from sleep apnea (as well as asthma and other respiratory disorders such as chronic sinusitis).

    4:30 Just so you guys know, only a select few plants actually release oxygen at night. Most plants in the absence of light give off carbon dioxide, which is not helpful. The best is the Areca Palm and next is the Sansevieria - or mother in law's tongue.

      Nurses, about 45 years ago used to have to remove flowers from patients rooms o/night, the smell/perfume was stronger at night, but also the plants release carbon dioxide at night. In olden Europe, people shut their windows at night as they believed the night air to be poisonous at night, especially for plants located under windows.

    I have year round, chronic sinus and allergy issues. Apparently i snore heaps, but hey I sleep sometimes without any disruptions.
    I have removed a lot of the stress in my life over the past year, and take daily antihistamines. I need to look at the fungus side of things though

    I've just been diagnosed with sleep apnea and uars, caused by a tongue tie and extraction/braces as it pushed my face and jaws back into my airways. Please do some videos on tongue ties and the dangers of braces, which are carried out by an orthodontic industry that is completely ignorant of the airways, body, jaws, face and posture, they are effectively carrying out double jaws surgery with extraction/braced on mainly children.

    I had heart bypass surgery about 3.5 years ago and i've had sleep apnea since. I had the sleep apnea study done recently, a three night study, and I stopped breathing 30 time in three nights.When I lay down at night to go to sleep, I start weezing when I exhale. There is a restriction in my throat from the surgery. Have you ever heard of this from anyone after having heart surgery?

    I've researched sleep apnea cures for years, yet this is the first time I've heard about milk being a problem..... and guess what I have EVERY single night before I go to sleep. I think I'm addicted to the stuff.... I literally think that I won't be able to go to sleep without it, even though my sleep sucks because of my apnea. What a weird web I've weaved. I'll try kicking my milk habit starting tonight. Thank you Dr. Berg!!

      @@shannon4078 I know. Same here but it gets better and my sleep has improved. Make sure you try different masks etc. But there is definitely something else going on and I think it has to do with food. I am having a hard time being disciplined with food right now but I am working my way up to doing another elimination diet (whole30) hoping to figure it out. I think dairy is just part of it but only part...

    I suffered chronic sinusitis since I was teenager. Ten years ago I went for the umpteenth time to a specialist and I was lucky to find one who told me to try to avoid completely milk and what contains it for a couple of months and see. And so bingo! The issue disappeared.

    I don't know if thunderstorms produce oxygen particles but i do know that they produce many negative ions. The negative ions are extremely beneficial for overall health and they effect the nervous system resulting in a happy mood. They also give oxygen particles two negative electrons, giving them negative charge (8 protons, 10 electrons).

    You are 100% right DR. Pizza with excess cheese and lots of caffeine and high amount of sugar drinks can block the passage. Also depression and anxiety due to short breaths less oxygen to blood for days and weeks can cause this too in my experience. In sleep, you have dreams and feeling very overwhelmed, thinking too much and not realizing you are not in fact breathing. This is more scary than triggering a past mental trauma when you are awake. It feels like the nose is blocked with mucus.

    I don't consume much wheat at all or sugar. I do consume some dairy in the form of cheese, but much less than before. I am resorting to spraying my nose and taking anti-histamines. Also ordered a special pillow and wedge pillow. Also trying throat exercises.

      I would check with your doctor before using an antihistamine because that can negatively affect sleep apnea. I was told not to use Benadryl or Zyrtec because they make a person drowzy and may slow down breathing a little more in a person with sleep apnea and you want to avoid this.

      I take AcV in about 8 oz.. of water. I have 1 tablespoon. Dr. recommended 1 tsp . I believe. A lot of people use that also 2x a day before eating.

    What about people who have actual damage to their esophagus? That is what causes my sleep Apnea. I was in a near fatal car accident five years ago. I was on a ventilator for three days. It physically caused damage to my lungs and esophagus, and I have had sleep apnea ever since.
    I also have to use extreme caution when I eat. My esophagus does not close properly while I eat. Food tends to get in my airways and I choke hard enough to hurt.

    Dr.Berg, you are talking about Obstructive Sleep Apnea, but what about Central Sleep Apnea. This is when your brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. What are your thoughts on that?

      Start with vitamin D and go from there. Low vitamin D somehow messes with that neural control system that takes over breathing when you go to sleep. I think it delays the automated breathing responses, so you go longer without air before the automated response kicks in. There are medications that will do the same thing as a side effect. The medication will call the side effect weird dreams , vivid dreams or nightmares. Well the dreams are a part of the brains automated response to kicking a person out of sleep. The dreams will be scary and disturbing and will usually revolve around death themes.

    The one thing that is not mentioned. As a thin person who has cut out all of that, I have an airway that as soon as I relax and am near sleep it closes off. The only relief from it that I have found is a CPAP machine. I think that it is a genetic thing because I also suffer from loose joints and connective tissue.
