I'm not able to connect my old Sony DCR-TR7000 (Digital 8 camcorder) to Windows 10 via a similar Firewire card (VIA Chipset). I'm thinking on using Windows XP to do the task.
I can't readily speak for the VIA chipset, but that may be one of the cards that I had tried previously. I attempted the Windows XP route also with minimal results. The most of my ripping is similarly with a Sony DCR-TR520, also a Digital8. While I strongly recommend the StarTech, the second link I provided has a number of other cards that claim compatibility also. The Vantec seems to be most readily found. Compatible cards seem to be getting harder and harder to find.
Would it not be easier and less stressful to just use a older win 7 computer to capture your video then save the captured video to a external hard drive? The problem most have is just getting video off the old tape camera's that only option is firewire.
the best solution would be having two OS installed , windows 7 an windows 10/11 , in that way you would just have to switch to any of them when you need to use your firewire devces . I'm planning to do that
Check out the link in the description to Scot's video on a potential USB/Thunderbolt solution. The USB port will HAVE to support Thunderbolt, as there is no USB solution. The technologies are not compatible.
I'm struggling with this problem, too: I already HAVE had success ripping DV via both of my internal PCIe firewire cards, using legacy drivers and WinDV and also Adobe Premiere. Then, after a while, I tried to rip a new batch of tapes - and nothing worked anymore. Same config in every aspect as far as I can tell, even after installing a second Windows 10 instance without all the updates but the legacy drivers - no dice. Now I'm thinking about one of those old USB Pinnacle MovieBoxes with FireWire ports - has anyone had any experience with these things? Do they, more or less, guarantee success in this endeavour?
You're further down the line than I am. I am in Win10 and purchased a 1394 PCI card which after installing legacy drivers shows up in Device Mgr but I can't get the camera to appear in device manager as at 3:30 in this RUclips video. May I ask, does your camera show up in Device Mgr? Seems worth a punt on the Startech or similar. Which PCIe FireWire cards do you have? As for your Pinnacle ideas, you'd be losing quality I would think. By the way, which format did you convert to?
@@terryglynn4380 , the camera did actually show up in device manager back when it worked, now even this doesn't happen anymore. I'm using an ELEGIANT1cz9Xfd81 and a Digitus DS-30201-3, both of which show up okay in DM and I've tried all the different driver combinations, including the legacy ones. Regarding the Pinnacle solution - I was thinking about this because it actually has a FireWire input, for digital transfers, they're not one of those analog S-video grabbers, so I hope that this would give me the same results as with the internal FW cards. Concerning the video format, I don't think there was any sort of conversion; with Premiere I've used the "DV" preset and saved the material in .AVI containers without any reencoding, as far as I know. Same thing with WinDV, the application just streamed the data from the camcorder into an .AVI file and that was it, no recalculation of any kind.
@@terryglynn4380 , I forgot to mention that the saved videos are in 720x576 resolution @ 25fps, without any - to me - discernible degradation or difference to when I watch the stuff on my TV directly from the camera. @@michaelhoffmann510 Thank Michael. Yes, AFAIK saving in AVI should maintain quality. But then as you can tell I'm a stills man and know very little about video. My pc recognises the card and pings to say something has been connected when I turn on the camcorder, but I can't find the feed on OBS to capture it. Any pointers/suggestions? Am I missing some other software?
OBS doesn't have support for this sort of capture medium. If you're attempting to capture live, I don't know that there is a modern solution (or if there was one in the past). if you're attempting to import tapes, I usually use Exsate DV Capture Live. It's what I've found to usually work.
As Joshua Sutherland said, OBS isn't suited to this. From memory, I think it was Microsofts 'Photo legacy' app that was easiest for me in Windows 11 - it may have even opened automatically when I connected the camera. VLC also worked for me, but I think it showed a blank screen during the process - it did copy the video successfully however. You could also try the free WinDV app(it's been around a very long time), which is solely for capturing from or sending to a DV camcorder. It didn't work for me *but* I was using a Pinnacle USB device which is a odd beast that converts the firewire signal(only for DV I assume). You will often also get play, fast forward etc controls(when the camera is in 'vcr'/play/whatever mode, which is important) on the computer when connected with suitable software, as it sends the control signals over the firewire connection. It's quite different from analog or hdmi etc captures.
Hi I am trying to digitize all my digital 8 tapes. Exate DV capture live seems to work ok but it stops after a few scenes and says to buy it. But on the software site the other software is the only one available to buy. Any thoughts? Thanks!
I've been able to determine that the version I'm using is the same that's listed on the website. My camera is completely dead right now though. Going to have to leave it on the charger for a while and hope it revives.

Is it the LE Plus? The StarTech card requires a PCI E x1 or larger expansion slot, of which the Asus P8Z77-V LE Plus has 5 compatible slots, 2 at the x1 size, and 3 at the x16 size. So long as you have a one of those slots open (navy blue, white, or black), you should be able to mount it no problem.
@@joshua.sutherland Thanks! No it is just the LE, and the current firewire card (which is not working) is mounted on a x1 size PCI slot. So I guess that I may just replace the current card with the new one. I have other PCI slots available too.
Since it's 1080i, I'm not sure you'd really want to use the XH-A1, but it is kinda fun to play with from a technology perspective. The biggest drawback is the XH-A1 doesn't have an SDI output (which would make it easy) like the XH-G1 does. But it does appear to still have an HD out terminal. So you'd have to get the output from the HD terminal, and then a converter or two to get it to a format you could ingest it on your computer. Something like a Blackmagic Design Mini Converter Analog to SDI, and then an SDI card for your desktop, I'd probably give that a try.
From my experience Firewire cards with Texas Instruments chips have least amount of issues. I have the 400 one from STLab with TI chip and it works quite stable with my TC Konnekt 48, but still, if I switch the sound card off while some program using it or the native configuration utility is open, in 99% of the cases I have BSOD. Maybe it's normal behaviour though, I don't know.
i have a tckonnekt 6 and it is litterally awesome card and i m struggling, can't work with asio drivers ( i m composing music in DAW) more than a hour without a black screen crash . It's almost depressing. And tc just abandoned the driver updates
Does your solution work as well with the DVC Pro format? I have several hundred hours of DVC Pro master and archival tapes that need to be transcoded to HD and then uploaded to Vimeo. Also, I am using versions 14, 17 and 18 of Vegas Pro, all on machines with generic firewire 400 cards. Thanks Joshua!!!
This is a reply to Joshua Sutherland's comment and question of two days ago. Hi Joshua! This may be a "re-post" of my reply/comments/questions of a couple of days ago. I seems that I may have not pressed the right button so, here it goes again (NOTE: If this really is a repeat of that message, please disregard - I'll wait for your response). I have tried using my Panasonic AJ-D230H, DVC Pro format via FW 400 connections on all three Win10 machines, with no luck. Several years ago I was using it with success using a Grass Valley Canopus DV Raptor card on a Windows NT (Pentium 3-400Hz) machine, but now I find myself in need of reconnecting the AJ-D230H machine to my Win10 computers, and I've had absolutely no luck. I would consider cannibalizing my old machines and the old video cards currently in storage, but would prefer not to (a lot of time and effort that might not pan out). One thing that might be an issue is the FW driver: my cards show "Texas Instruments 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller". About 3:00 into your video, you mention verbally as well as show on screen that your drivers are "VIA 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller". Is that because of the chipset used in the manufacture of your card, or is it a driver that I could download and update? Another item (YT video) that I've found that might help understand what's going on, albeit not solving the problem, is a comment by another YT Contributor who states, "...DVC Pro FW cards did not comply to the DV standard, so you were somewhat limited" (ruclips.net/video/oLfKtXy8VeI/видео.html) at 6:15 into his video. I'll continue looking, but your input is very much appreciated. Please let me know your thoughts...Thanks!!
Apologies for the late response. Only just now saw this. The VIA driver is due to the use of a VIA chipset. Chipset seems to be a main contributor to whether or not a given FW card will work or not. Unfortunately, I believe I've seen that the same card can come with either chipset at times. My original card was a TI if I'm not mistaken, and replacing with the VIA worked. There is an alternative method using Thunderbolt, if that appeals to you. I have a video linked in the description above where you can check out that solution. I haven't attempted it myself yet, but it may be more approachable for most.
@@gustavomiranda7584 Hi there, I'm currently having this exact problem and was hoping you might have found a solution by now that you would be willing to share with me? Thanks so much

@@joshua.sutherland Correct it is a DTE Device. The Cable was a Firewire 400 and looks the Firewire Card is a unbranded Firewire 1394A, but the Camera works through it.

Link studio1 is dead 😕
Would it not be easier and less stressful to just use a older win 7 computer to capture your video then save the captured video to a external hard drive? The problem most have is just getting video off the old tape camera's that only option is firewire.
the best solution would be having two OS installed , windows 7 an windows 10/11 , in that way you would just have to switch to any of them when you need to use your firewire devces . I'm planning to do that
@@tunkunrunk How did it work out? How do you install a Win 7 without affecting the rest of the computer?
I want to achieve the same but I don't have a desktop. I am wondering how can i do it from my Windows 10 Laptop which mostly have USB ports only ?
If anything, they're sharper on the computer screen since there's no processing/upscaling like the TV does.
@@michaelhoffmann510 Thank Michael. Yes, AFAIK saving in AVI should maintain quality. But then as you can tell I'm a stills man and know very little about video.
I think I'm going to buy a PCIe card that is 'compatible' with Win10 and take it from there.
I'll report back if I get it working.

Legacy drivers wont install on my windows 10, I get BSOD whea_uncorrectable_error when trying to install it from the list. Im so tired of this lol I'm literally just going to buy a super old windows laptop with a firewire port.
I know this is old now but I'm struggling to close the loop! I've got a new Firewire card, VIA 1394.
Thanks!
I haven't experienced this personally. I may do some testing tomorrow. I need to rip some more tapes anyhow.

@@joshua.sutherland Great, thanks for replying!
Thanks for this. Is the StarTech firewire card shown in the video compatible with an Asus P8Z77-V LE motherboard? Thanks.

Did anybody figure out how to use an XHA1 for streaming??

Hey Gustavo! It's hard to know for sure without testing, but I do believe that it should. What part are you concerned about?
I haven't attempted it myself yet, but it may be more approachable for most.

vantec / via chipset; constant dropouts. nothing fixed it. didn't matter what drivers i tried. legacy, the via from the page, the 10.x thats recommended. nada. didn't matter what machine i put it in. swapping over to a fresh install on a spare ssd in those same machines to run w7 and zero issues in any machine. doesn't help me play games/run newer programs though.
vantec / TI 2213B; lasts a while (usually several days) before momentary desync issues crop up and will only go away if i reboot. rinse, repeat. while it's working it just works, flawlessly. if i move too much data through the bus or leave the machine up for a few days (which happens, since its an always-on machine), then it does the dropouts. restarting the windows audio service can extended the duration of how long it is before reboots some, but eventually it just needs to be rebooted.
also didn't have this issue until the creator update in w10. base RTM w10 ran flawlessly with the via card. no dropouts, or desyncs. no crashes from the 1394 drivers, didn't run legacy driver, everything was beautiful. was.
and then it appears microsoft told the whole firewire community to take a flying leap.
at this point the only possible options is to try the syba 2213B thats supposed to have some weird workaround to fix the issues. failing that, run a dedicated w7 machine just to route my audio, which is freakin pathetic. also limits what i can do with the firestudio project in regards to audio production.
