  • Obviously not the day I had envisioned when I pulled up to the first spot but with the rapid weather change I knew it was going to be tough to find fish either way - just happy I was able to get a few bites and fish in the "boat!"
Looking forward to the warmer weather ahead so we can get on some nice bass, pike, walleye, etc!
Thanks for watching - see y'all on the next one!

Nice video. Always enjoy videos from the area I live (in Winona). I think spot 2 was maybe upper Mill Creek? If so that stretch is pretty degraded because of the heavily grazed pasture as seen by all the eroding banks. Further downstream can be a little better.

Awesome! Thanks for watching, DD. Good to know about the stream too… that was pretty much my first time down there trout fishing that area so I wasn’t entirely sure where to go with the limited time I had left. Lol. Pretty cool seeing all the random trout streams around us!

Dude let's go! I live RIGHT THERE. Lol I saw the video and thought, gawd that looks familiar...then I heard you say "Root River South of Rochester" there is a ton of trout, rough fish, small mouth, white bass, sturgeon, and sauger all over basically every part of the root. There is usually better spots or more concentrates spots the trout hang out, us locals know about. Go to "South Fork/ South Branch" of the root by Whalan and Lanesboro for about a picturesque trout experience. Our area is known for ALOT of trout there.
Us locals usually do not bobber or cast in the root. Current is almost always too strong, the amount of natural floating debris, and unpredictable bottom changes all of of the time. Especially when they dredge it😅.
Most use a solid but pretty old school 3 way rig with a real heavy sinker. Like you would for catfish.
Root river between Peterson and Rushford is also a hot spot and very clear part of root. That is well concentrated with about every species the river has, especially trout.
Hope this helps your videos and adventures

@@LoOutdoors there is a bike trail that runs almost the entire root river Starting in Houston MN all the way to Lanesboro MN. So fishing access is abundant. There is alot of canoe/kayak/tubing drop of spots as well. There is parts of the river that are rocky with sand and pebble agate beaches and clear water like you'd picture in Montana in southern portion. then there is parts closer to Mississippi that are more brackish and will hold more of the muddy fish.
Chicken liver is a local favorite bait if doing the 3 way rig set up. I should say I wouldn't rule out throwing something like a Meps or a Rattle trap type in some areas. I've hit the sauger, small mouth and trout of those in the root river. If you pull up our DNR recreational map it will show the parts/section of root, access points, and also tells you where they stock MANY of the streams connect to root. I believe bike trail map is on there as well. Beaver Creek state Parke is in Caledonia MN and shown on map. Lots of trails and trout streams there aswell.
      Happy trails!

@@amp-uspsashootingsports4336 this is great stuff! Man! I’ve never fished the root further down by the mouth so I definitely need to do some research and head on down that way! I’ve heard of guys catching all kinds of stuff down further but never tried it myself haha. Won’t be long before all the rivers are low again and and I can do some wading

@LoOutdoors definitely try "Millers Corner." it's a pond/small lake of slack waters that comes from Target Lake off Mississippi. Which is known for bass. It's right outside La Crescent, MN, right on the corner of Highway 16 and Highway 26 going towards Hokah or Brownsville. There is a train bridge and also a road bridge that crosses it. It's full of northern, bass, and alot of panfish. Alot of guys will make their way out to the train bridge where the water flows in and jig for crappie. There is alot of under water structure there I've heard... sometimes when it floods you can walk around the area and find small pools of trapped rough fish and etc. When the water gets low, often a sand island is revealed right out in the middle. Is a really good spot to drop a kayak or paddle boat in and cover. Otherwise, you can pretty much cover the whole area walking around the pond portion. Good spot if in area to also check out that's separate from Root River, but also right next to it.
Then If you travel down Highway 26 towards and past Brownsville MN, there is the "Reno Spill Way" it's a fishing walking/bike path/ spillway/dam with culverts that goes all the way across Mississippi River and connects to Wisconsin side Dam #8. You will absolutely slay monster bass there and I've heard there is a few Burbot/Eelpout in there too. Alot of Lilly pads, milfoil, aquatic plant cover, and timbers. I often see people throwing large swimbaits at the Reno Spill Way.
Here is our Minnesota Recreational Compass DNR link. Really nice interactive map I use, along side "houston county property search" to see where land boundries are. Not sure where you are from and if every state has these maps but it's awesome.

@@LoOutdoors yea I think most of the man game fish are hanging out in the main water of the Mississippi (apart from the trout) cuz the water on the river is damn cold. But if we have a good stretch of warm weather fishing should get good.
