Hey, don't feel bad Greg. You are a genuine guy. And you did WAY more than others would've. You have integrity. It would've been easy to delete that video, cut your line and sneak off. You didn't. You are a great ambassador for our sport man. Hold your head high dude.
Man that happened to me with a seagull, was able to get the lure out with HELP from others. Competed in my first KBF over the weekend, watching your videos gave me courage, thanks
Hey Greg would it be possible for you to let us(your subs) vote on one of baits? You would give us 2-4 options and the one with the most votes would become the subscriber choice bait. This way we can get more involved in the challenge! Thanks👍
Tough situation to deal with. I've only seen videos of the anglers successfully setting the birds free. I'm sure there are even more that didn't end as well. I've hooked a pelican but it shook loose. I needed one of those big bite baits war mouths the other day when I encountered the biggest bed fish ever. I'm pretty sure she was double digits.
Good job Greg. We hooked a blue heron once! Same situation, it took off right as my buddy casted a crank bait. Unbelievably, it laid down in someone’s front yard and let me remove the hook! My buddy was in such shock at how calm it was that he forgot to video it!
I don't think you could've done anything different. You needed to get a hold of the bird before you could do anything else. Would've been nice if the people in the boat had helped out.
First off, Greg thank you, you have inspired me in getting back into a thing that I was raised on but just adding a kayak to the mix. Fishing man.. its an awesome thing we have been blessed with. Thank you! Next as an avid waterfowler up here in Wisconsin, oh bud you had a bad day.. Ducks and geese will dive on ya when in panic situations and what you had going on, epic bad scenario, not going to lie. Its an instinct they have when you get to close to them. They will try to grab on to any rooted vegetation or get down in the mud and drown themselves to get away from the threat. It's built into them. Not much you could have done..
Great video Greg. Too bad about the goose. Don’t feel bad. It was obvious that you cared and did everything you could to ease the goose’s possible future pain.
that happened to me once, the geese just ran over my line but thank god that it barely got tangled in the line without getting hooked and it just came off easily by itself.
Same thing happened to me 3 weeks ago! Same situation, but the goose circled me 3 times before running Into my line. I had a chatterbait on that wrapped around its neck. Somehow, it didnt hook into its neck and it got free. Didnt break my line, but he did fly away. I feel your pain though, that's suck a strange situation
I'm a new fisherman and I've learned a lot by watching your videos, I don't think anyone could've done anything more than what you did, it was just a bad day for the bird
Greg, could you do a short video on your kayak setup and gear? I’m new to kayak fishing and just curious about your layout. Great video by the way, love watching!
Dont feel to bad man that stuff happens. Ive come very close to having things like that happening to me when using top water baits. Like actually having birds swooping down trying to grab them. You did everything you could to try helping.
This has happened to me before Greg. Made a cast to a log and didn’t see the crane but it came from the bank directly to my lure. Got wrapped and eventually spooled my reel out. It happens once in a blue moon man.
I had that happen with a cormorant when I was throwing a bullgill. Not fun. My buddy got bit while we were trying to wrangle it down so we could free it.
That is just bad luck but thanks for keeping it honest and real. Lots of guys would have just cut the line and then told us it got broke off on a snag. Geese are strong birds and it will probably pluck that off with its own beak later.
I have had that happen with seagulls twice. One bit the bait and the other ran into the line. We threw a shirt over their head and got the hook out. You tried is the important thing.
Damn bud . You did the right thing by continuing to try . It happened to me with an owl I felt the same way . The owl did eventually Shake It Off during trying to get him in but I still felt horrible . But again you did the right thing by trying
I caught a bird on a Jerkbait once before from the shore. Same exact way. I got it and removed the bait. Those birds fight like crazy though when you try and remove it. Still sweet vid man.
I don't think you could have gotten that goose off. IDK what pound test you were fishing with, but unless I am using a swimbait I never go over 15 pound test and most of the time I use 6-8# fluro because I finesse fish most of the time, so it would be almost impossible for me to reel in a goose and get the hooks off. I have caught two ducks and gotten them off though. One swam underwater and ate a crank-bait while I wasn't paying attention to where he dove at. The other flew right into my cast just like that goose.
a similar thing happened to me on the delta. i spooked a bird casting, it flew into my line so i panicked and cut my line pretty quickly. the bird dropped to the ground in some heavy brush. nothing i could do...
I know how bad you feel. It happened to me once too a bird came out of nowhere and dive in to the water to get my shiny rapala minnow and there was nothing I could do.
Had this happen to me last summer just as a casted the bird flew right into my line it was a mess and the bird bit the hell out of me lol you done everything you could do
PB Goose! (Too soon?). Nah Greg you did the best you could given that situation. I haven't caught a bird yet but did have a seagull try to take a Whopper plopper once. Good video man!
Hey Greg you done the best you could do for the bird and i commend you for your efforts. Many other people would have just cut the line and not care if the bird had hooks in it or not. The good thing is that you were close to him and he didn't have a lot of line to have to deal with. Just a question though. Do you know if the bird flew off. If it did that would be great. Well that teachs me to start writing before the video is over. You already answered the question. Thanks again for being a responsible person and angler. Thats one of the reasons that ive been a subscriber for ever. Goid on you my friend.
Been there myself except it was a red tail hawk. It attacked my frog. I cut the line and tried to get to him to get the hook out of its talons but it took off. It was crazy
Very unfortunate, but you handled it well. Would have been better if the boat guys offered to help. Similar thing happened to me with a pigeon flying out from under a bridge just as I cast. Fortunately a better ending... Keep on keepin' on, man.
Stuff like that happens, you tried and that is what matters. I hooked a pelican while pier fishing and had to cover it with a towel to keep it calm. Way easier on land to handle then in a yak. I felt like a jerk also, but you can’t control what you can’t control.
Know how you feel...same thing happened to me at lake chabot but a female mallard went after my keitech swimbait same result got close she broke me off felt horrible didn’t even wanna fish after 😔
While inshore fishing with live shrimp, a Seagal grabbed my bait mid cast and swallowed it before I could grab it. I cut the line and hoped for the best. It happens man.
Had I caught a bird by accident like you, I would at least let the bird exhaust itself to surrender to the point that it would not fight back, then attempt to take hooks out or to unwrap it. Kayak Catfish comes to mind in getting a catfish in the kayak. I have caught one big catfish in a kayak when I was not ready for it, and I definitely they it pull me around and fought it for quite some time before landing it. Accidents happen and hopefully we learn from them or at least have a game plan next time.
I hooked a huge turtle with a jerkbait one time and while trying to remove the hook from its front leg ended up with a jerkbait in-bedded in my hand. It's not fun trying to drive to a doc-in-the-box with a lure hanging in your palm.
No worries Greg, your a good man,you did all you could. I caught a seagull once using live bait in kelp, the gull saw it in the air while casting, he dive bombed and snagged it in his beak. I immediately had a bird flying in a tight circle on the end of my line. I turned to my Dad and said "what do i do"? He goes "reel it in"..that went well lol. that bird hated us, just to finish the story we got out the hook and threw him in the air and he picked right back up where he left off trying to snag our minnows out of the sky...stupid birds..
I've saved a few baby birds from being tangled up in saud netting on the bank and they think your their to kill them. I got a chunk taken out of my finger after cutting the mesh from around leg and neck and right it hot loose it bit me and took off. Lol
Horrible thing to happen Greg as you clearly love nature, you tried to deal with the situation in a sympathetic way and that reflects well on you as a fisherman.
Greg I've noticed that you never do any trolling when you're moving from spot to spot. I always keep one lure in the water when i'm moving. I've caught many bass trolling around from spot to spot. Was wondering why you don't?
Did you ever get the bait back? What happened to the duck? I know a game warden here in Texas that will go out to the area and look for the duck or animal that was hooked and try to get the lure out of the animal. Maybe the California Fish and Game wardens will do the same.
Hooked a gull like that once , I got the ungrateful sob loose. He tried to bite my finger off. As long as you try your best to free the bird there is nothing else that can be done.
Man that sucks! Have come close to stuff like that myself and have found dead wildlife that’s obviously a direct result of fishermen not being able to retrieve lost lines and hooks and baits. Those jerks in the boat should’ve tried done something. As fellow fisherman they should’ve felt and obligation to the land and a fellow fisherman to help out.
Those Honkers can be really annoying... not much you can do when they are hooked like that, they are wild animals so can be difficult to handle, easily knock you off your kayak, etc... at least you tried
I personally, would of considered moving to the shore with the rocks to try and pull it to the beach. No matter what, you were going to have a fight though. It wouldn't of just relaxed and let you get the lure. But at least on shore you wouldn't of had it diving back under.
Hey, don't feel bad Greg. You are a genuine guy. And you did WAY more than others would've. You have integrity. It would've been easy to delete that video, cut your line and sneak off. You didn't. You are a great ambassador for our sport man. Hold your head high dude.
It happens don't worry about it you tried harder than most would have
That's crazy! You, 1Rod, and SBFishing all hooked birds in this last week's videos!
I saw that! bad week for birds
Man that happened to me with a seagull, was able to get the lure out with HELP from others. Competed in my first KBF over the weekend, watching your videos gave me courage, thanks
hey man, congrats! hope you had fun!
Hey Greg would it be possible for you to let us(your subs) vote on one of baits? You would give us 2-4 options and the one with the most votes would become the subscriber choice bait. This way we can get more involved in the challenge! Thanks👍
Yes! Love this idea and will post a community tab for a "Subscribers choice" bait for the month of June. Thanks for the idea!
Never knew geese could dive like that
those guys with the boat should have helped ya..
Tough situation to deal with. I've only seen videos of the anglers successfully setting the birds free. I'm sure there are even more that didn't end as well. I've hooked a pelican but it shook loose. wow! that's crazy, that'd be one of the last birds I'd want to hook
Did all you could’ve done. Always scared of something like that happening too. You still caught something on the jerkbait though 😂
lmao, that is true!
I don't think you could've done anything different. You needed to get a hold of the bird before you could do anything else. Would've been nice if the people in the boat had helped out.

Wow! What a crazy day. That's why this is my favorite channel. You are willing to show the good the bad and the ugly.
“You hit that bird!”
“He shouldn’t have been flying there”
hahah
Great video Greg. Too bad about the goose. Don’t feel bad. It was obvious that you cared and did everything you could to ease the goose’s possible future pain.
that happened to me once, the geese just ran over my line but thank god that it barely got tangled in the line without getting hooked and it just came off easily by itself.
You are a good example to all Anglers, we should all aspire to be caring for Nature like you.
Don't sweat it Greg it happens way more then you would think keep fishing and making great video's!!!!
You gave an effort with that bird more than most would do...still fishing prespawn here in upstate New York...
Same here it's pretty hard
Looking for it to hopefully turn on by the time I arrive in May!
Don't sweat it man. Catching odd things is part of fishing. Great video!
This has happened to me before Greg. Made a cast to a log and didn’t see the crane but it came from the bank directly to my lure. Got wrapped and eventually spooled my reel out. It happens once in a blue moon man.
Greg you did all you can do. I’ve hooked Seagulls down here in SoCal and it sucks. But at least you tried bro!
Well I have never hooked a bird but I am amazed how many trees jump in front of my lures. You did all you could man. 👍
Good to see that geese flying away at the end. I've hooked a few seagulls before.
I had that happen with a cormorant when I was throwing a bullgill. Not fun. My buddy got bit while we were trying to wrangle it down so we could free it.
Yup a swan did almost the same thing to me with a plopper last year!!!!!!
And you did all you could...
That is just bad luck but thanks for keeping it honest and real. Lots of guys would have just cut the line and then told us it got broke off on a snag. Geese are strong birds and it will probably pluck that off with its own beak later.
I've had the same thing happen and almost got my eyes pecked out. You did the best you could.
I was just linked up to your channel from a buddy of mine and you’ve quickly became one of my favorite videos to watch 🤙 great content
Thanks man! glad you enjoy the content!
I have had that happen with seagulls twice. One bit the bait and the other ran into the line. We threw a shirt over their head and got the hook out. You tried is the important thing.
Thanks for sharing the good the bad and the ugly . Feel bad for that bird as well
Damn bud . You did the right thing by continuing to try . It happened to me with an owl I felt the same way . The owl did eventually Shake It Off during trying to get him in but I still felt horrible . But again you did the right thing by trying
Unreal...you did all you could. I was surprised the goose didn’t break off sooner!
I caught a bird on a Jerkbait once before from the shore. Same exact way. I got it and removed the bait. Those birds fight like crazy though when you try and remove it. Still sweet vid man.

Had this happen to me last summer just as a casted the bird flew right into my line it was a mess and the bird bit the hell out of me lol you done everything you could do
😂the bird thing happens. Thats why i use a high speed reel on my swimbaits. Damn birds come out of nowhere and dive bomb my deps 175’s.
Did you add the rattle to that bird flying with the jerk bait at the end? Lmao 😂
haha, i swear i didn't
8:45 lol is that the goose that floats up dead?
Great video as always. What knot do you use to typing your leader?
Dropshot leader
Thanks Arthur! albright knot
Greg try the green pumpkin and purple flake senko, it’s the juice in the northeast
PB Goose! (Too soon?). Nah Greg you did the best you could given that situation. I haven't caught a bird yet but did have a seagull try to take a Whopper plopper once. Good video man!
He didn't land it, so it doesn't count.
@@markcrook7545 ah... Good point.
Hey Greg you done the best you could do for the bird and i commend you for your efforts. Many other people would have just cut the line and not care if the bird had hooks in it or not. Thanks Dewey! appreciate you watching! my hope is that the hooks will rust and it will fall out in a month or two!
It happens i've done it one the 1st cast before it suck but I can't control what the duck does
Been there myself except it was a red tail hawk. It attacked my frog. I cut the line and tried to get to him to get the hook out of its talons but it took off. It was crazy
Greg it happens. ive caught a few exactly like you did. and ive rescued way more.
You could call the nearest wildlife rehabilitation centre they have a lot of experience with catching geese and a variety of wildlife!
Very unfortunate, but you handled it well. Would have been better if the boat guys offered to help. Similar thing happened to me with a pigeon flying out from under a bridge just as I cast. Fortunately a better ending... Keep on keepin' on, man.
You never know what may happen at any given time! You did what you could,to fix it.
I need details on how you mod'd your net bud
should be in the description of my recent tour of my boat Jake. Just search videos in the past couple months and it is there
What area of the delta is this? Looks damn near choked out already
Where did you launch if you don't mind me asking?
Stuff like that happens, you tried and that is what matters. I hooked a pelican while pier fishing and had to cover it with a towel to keep it calm. Way easier on land to handle then in a yak. I felt like a jerk also, but you can’t control what you can’t control.
Greg, What lure covers do you use and like? Thanks
Its in the description. Its the ALC bait sack
Know how you feel...same thing happened to me at lake chabot but a female mallard went after my keitech swimbait same result got close she broke me off felt horrible didn’t even wanna fish after 😔
Your all good bro i had a gull fly into one of my casts i was able to free him but hopfully the bait will rust out of the bird
That wingull used Dive on you twice lol.
I like watching your videos I learn a lot from you. Keep up bro.
Thanks Jorge!
While inshore fishing with live shrimp, a Seagal grabbed my bait mid cast and swallowed it before I could grab it. I cut the line and hoped for the best. It happens man.
Done that a few times....last one was a blue heron, so consider yourself lucky yours was just a goose.
Had I caught a bird by accident like you, I would at least let the bird exhaust itself to surrender to the point that it would not fight back, then attempt to take hooks out or to unwrap it. Sorry about the bird that would not be fun. Will you please share where you launch from. Thank you.
lazy m but this spot is 4+ miles away
Thank you Greg I live about 3.5 hours away from the delta and I’m always curious about new places to launch from. Catch a big one.
Yooooooo what's up with the guns? Hitting the weights? Another great video!
How hard is it to paddle the 10.5 in that grass
not too bad, wouldn't want to do it for more than a half mile though
You did your best. That bird could Flipp your kayak. Better to be safe than sorry. Enjoy the videos thank you so much
Your a good guy Greg. Dont trip on it
I hooked a huge turtle with a jerkbait one time and while trying to remove the hook from its front leg ended up with a jerkbait in-bedded in my hand. It's not fun trying to drive to a doc-in-the-box with a lure hanging in your palm.
Hey man what crate do you have in the back!? Looks a lot bigger than my blackpak
linked it in the description man! it's a beast of a trunk
I have to be careful when musky fishing around here due to the bald eagles and ospreys wanting to eat my glidebaits.
Happened to me in Marina del Rey. Was a very similar sequence of events. Tried and tried to catch up but it eventually broke me off.
I had a gull dive at my whopper plopper and hooked itself in the foot. I got it out, but it wasn't happy.
Ur videos inspired me to buy a fishing kayak
gfdemt917 definitely do it was the best fishing choice I ever made.
Mr. V 2 I already have
gfdemt917 how do you like it?
Mr. V 2 have not been out yet on it every weekend seems to be blowing 30mph wind
gfdemt917 they are a great investment, be patient with it
Not much you can do from a kayak in that situation you did your best
Looking yolked, bro!
Tracy oasis has been good ! Got a few nice blow ups and missed a 4-5lb bass on the frog. Check it out !
It happens man shake it off you’re all good!
I've saved a few baby birds from being tangled up in saud netting on the bank and they think your their to kill them. I got a chunk taken out of my finger after cutting the mesh from around leg and neck and right it hot loose it bit me and took off. Lol
It happens man. I’ve hit a bird once with a cast. Luckily it was just a Weightless senko. You made every effort to help the bird.
Horrible thing to happen Greg as you clearly love nature, you tried to deal with the situation in a sympathetic way and that reflects well on you as a fisherman.
Greg, are you using any lapel mics or any other audio recording devices other than the stock GoPro mics? Great vid man!
THanks! no mics, just the chest mounted gopro audio
Greg I've noticed that you never do any trolling when you're moving from spot to spot. I always keep one lure in the water when i'm moving. I've caught many bass trolling around from spot to spot. Was wondering why you don't?
Honestly never really thought of it. might have to setup a rod holder to troll next time!
Sbfishing James and 1rod1reel both hooked birds in the last week and now you did too...lol awesome video as always!
You did all that you could. Luckily I haven't had that happen to me but came really close once. Funny 1Rod did the same thing in his last video.
Did you ever get the bait back? What happened to the duck? I know a game warden here in Texas that will go out to the area and look for the duck or animal that was hooked and try to get the lure out of the animal. Maybe the California Fish and Game wardens will do the same.
I just realized that the video was shot over a year ago. My bad! Good Luck and watch out for hungry ducks!!!
That time of the month lol
Dude You did the best you could at trying to help the bird! I am the same as you! I don’t want to hurt animals!
good job 😎
How do you know that was the goose at the end?
saw the jerkbait in its wing!
But at least on shore you wouldn't of had it diving back under.
wasn't you do about the goose i have had one do that to me one time on baby spook
