Down the rabbit hole refers to Alice in Wonderland, Alice goes down a rabbit hole into a fantasy (crazy) world. So when someone says going down the rabbit hole, it means the situation they are in or about to get into is getting crazier and crazier by the minute, or that the situation is getting weird.

Thanks for bringing up Cockney rhyming slang.
I used to have a Walsh friend introduced it to me, and he told me it’s developed for military use, so that others won’t know what they really meant. Not sure if it is true though. But it surely is much fun hearing them🤣

Oh, if, I won't have to talk
