I hadn't heard of 'flashlight' until I came to the US. In HK, I used torch. Is it also true in the UK? My US friend laughed at me when I said 'torch' as it means something like Olympic torch.
I had the same experience 40 years ago when I used "torch" to mean " flashlight". I deeply remember my friends here laughing that we were not in a cave!!
I was asking for utensils in a restaurant in Manchester but the waitress did not know what I meant…..later I found out that I should have asked for cutlery instead.
