    UK: tick US: check
UK: autumn US: fall (autumn is used but mostly use Fall)
UK: post (verb) US: mail (but still called a post office as in US postal service)
UK: hire a car US: rent a car. (No one understands what it is meant by hiring a car, a taxi)
UK: timetable US: schedule (different pronunciation!)
UK: primary, secondary, and tertiary education US: elementary, secondary and higher education

I learnt English in HK before studying in the States. Americans are very generous with their ears; need not worry that your English doesn't exactly match the locals'.

    • @sanhopper9508
      @sanhopper9508 Год назад +1

Hi, I’m a BBC but have spent lots of time working with adults and children from America.
Faye and Stevo covered many of the differences already but I have added some others.
      UK: trousers US: pants
UK underwear terminology: pants (or boxers or slips) are generally male underwear, knickers are female underwear. Some people now call knickers “Panties”, which is more American.
      UK: vest US: undershirt
In the UK we have t-shirts (male and female) and collared starch shirts (like you wear to an office, female version is a “blouse”).
      UK: trainers US: sneakers
      UK: rucksack US: backpack.
UK: bum bag US: fanny pack… in the UK a fanny is the slang/child term for a female’s nether region.
      UK: torch US: flashlight
      UK: nappy US: diaper
      UK: baby’s dummy US: pacifier
      UK: rubber US: eraser
      UK: condom US: rubber
      UK: jam US: jelly
      UK: jelly US: Jello
UK: corn flour US: corn starch
UK: bicarbonate of soda US: baking soda
UK: plain flour US: all purpose flour.
UK: self raising flour is basically plain flour with baking POWDER (not soda!) already added.
Because the UK has more American influences than vice versa, the majority of British people (especially in and around London) tend to understand what the American word is.
      I hope this helps!

    之前喺英格蘭西北部Lancashire讀書,啲人99%係會用番英國嘅字,如果你突然間彈個美式英文字出嚟佢哋都會明,但係會覺得你好怪。

fire engine = called an "appliance" by fire fighters. eg three appliances attended the fire at high street yesterday.
屎坑! 😳 應該叫馬桶好😄 大陸啲 hole in the ground 先係屎坑😂
    UK 1st floor = 一字樓 = 二樓
    glasses definitely 係英國term
    UK pants = trousers
US pants = under pants 😋
cuppa quite often used in a question: would you like a cuppa? might be more a northern thing.
only old people say hoover... 😋 only joking. or am I 😋
Doctor's surgery more common than saying "going to the GP".
"chemist" is technically not the same thing as a pharmacy but they are still used interchangeably.
The "checkout" is also common for the "till".
