would you consider do a review on Totem Accoustics' Tribe V on-wall speaker?
If it's worth anything... there's a legitimate sounding audiophile on YT (actually Uses REW & UMik-1) that has owned Genelec 1238 (big 15" monitor, $8.1k ea), Genelec 1032c ($2.5k ea) and Genelec 836 ($5k ea)... and he says the DZR315 sounds better than all those high-end studio monitors and the DZR315 are his current, ideal setup.
He believes they can easily cover the HiFi speakers I mentioned (JBL L100 Classic, Klipsch [yeah I know, a low bar lol])
He says they sound very accurate, flat, neutral, clean, clear, very pleasing, etc., etc.
This is why Erin is my #1 audio reviewer. Thank you for keeping it real!

I agree. I find Erin very informative. I think the main point is the way he connects the dots between subjective listening experience and measurements. Always making it accessible without dumbing it down (at least not to below my level of understanding). Love the enthusiasm, too. And the integrity. If the entire audio press was like this, I'm almost certain the entire industry would also be making better products. Wouldn't even have a choice. It's that important, and it's that rare.
And this from a guy who's not looking for buying advice at all, but any solid source of wisdom on his way into serious DIY.

It's like Musicians, or even gamers or something, only the top like 10% (probably less) make any decent money. As far as affiliate links, you kind of have to own it. act like it's normal, and nobody will bat an eye. I think its a mistake when youtubers apologize and give a whole speech about it. You're putting in the work. You deserve some compensation for your time.

Fun fact on returning reviewed products. I've heard of importers/ dealers talk of problems getting reviewers (small scale print magazines) to return products after they've published their review, even when repeatedly asking. This is a weird world.

How do I really know if the gear is any good? It's okay to do negative reviews on gear and telling us why you don't like it.

I used to work in defence too. I had the same 'conscience-checking pause' when naming it out-loud as part of me knew, regardless of the few nice colleagues, that I was somewhat responsible for some death somewhere unnecessary. I hope the chance to go full time on reviews reveals itself in time. It's not all about the health of the bank account ;)
I loved that Gerald Undone video! "Access journalism" is real. I have some sympathy for manufacturers because the internet is a place where people pile on any negative factoid. I think it's good long term thinking for reviewers to disclose anything of value (trips, gear, etc) they received in the intro like Gerald does.
One thing for viewers to consider is that if someone is reviewing stuff that's out of production- no manufacturer is giving them anything. This is excellent content

that's a bit overly broad and unfair. If Erin had millions of views a month and got a piece of that ad revenue but is doing no "selling" directly, why not? I too am an engineer, although not a youtuber, and I watch some other engineers' channels. Some do make money, some don't. The ones that do aren't salesmen any more than any other ad supported content medium (TV for example)

I watch your channel regularly. When I saw the title of this video I wasn’t sure that I was interested. But I’m glad I clicked it. I found your openness engaging and refreshing. From a topic perspective, my ears perked up when you shared on room treatments. I run Ohm speakers and the manufacturer recommended going without. Audyssey via a Marantz processor makes a very noticeable improvement. More time on this topic would make me happy. I used GIK products (traps and side absorbers) in another room with a different rig and speakers. They improved the sound greatly. You have a clear way to explain things. I’m an industrial engineer

Thank you for your very candid and enjoyable video. One big thing I know was not a question but still something I really notice is the small products from almost all YT reviewers. I suppose it is due to the world we live in with shipping constraints. I have long noticed that most audio reviewers hardly ever review larger floor standing speakers, which I happen to love over smaller bookshelf speakers. It can be very tiring to only see bookshelf speakers reviewed on an almost constant basis by the masses on RUclips. I appreciate that you seem to be one of the more varied reviewers and that is MUCH appreciated.
As far as room acoustics are concerned, that's some good advice right there. I was one of those ones who thought he could sort his room acoustics out by ear. It's only taking me the best part of a year to realise this might not be the best strategy. Mind you, isn't this part of the journey, or should I say, learning process.

The honesty is very much appreciated. There is some reviewers that I watch now for more of a entertainment value, but when I want the cold hard facts your channel and about two or three others are my go to sources. If I want sugar coating I can easily go to the store and listen to a salesperson blab on and on.

Fellow BSAE aerospace engineer here. I can definitely relate to working with a great group of people and all of the analysis and data mining. I always felt like my career has given me some cool skills that I normally wouldn't have, so I'm curious to know how you think it has impacted your analytical skills in audio. Definitely get the limitations of RUclips and the commitment to your career, which is a good one and I would think has kept you more level-headed. As we like to say in my group, engineers are "doomed to a merely comfortable life.” My problem is having just enough money to begin dabbling in the seriously expensive gear. Slippery slope.

this is so true. hearing eco in a room is basically saying i like hearing distortion. without minimum room treatment in the right locations imo cannot determine the true subjective sound of a speaker.
Great video Erin. You're one of the best reviewers out there. Most of the standard YT business stuff doesn't bother me, except this sponsored video stuff. When a reviewer starts getting paid to essentially make marketing videos for a brand instead of reviews, that stuff drives me nuts. At that point, you're no longer a reviewer and are a videographer for hire with an audience.
Man I love your speaker reviews. I have a request - could you please do more amplifier reviews? Yes in my experience a manufacturer has a big influence on reviews. This is why I try to buy products that are reviewed by people who buy the product because these people will be more honest vs someone who was flown or sent the item. I have also noticed that if the manufacturer sends you the item without charge and the item is reviewed poorly then they just won’t send you items in the future. Case in point, Nvidia, Intel.

Great honest presentation. Most of the reviewers that I follow appear to be forthright and honest in their reviews. The ones that do not it’s pretty easy to tell right from the get-go and any videos of theirs that I watch I take with a grain of salt

Ever since I’ve known of you, you’ve always offered a fair and direct opinion what you feel is right and you’ve called me out on it in the past, so for that I respect you quite a lot.
You’ve shown me just by allowing me to listen to your civic what an enjoyable, and musical system can provide.
At finals last year, you didn’t tell me directly that my system was too bright for your liking, but you said that you had to leave as your ears got fatigued or fried. ( I forgot what you said exactly)
I appreciated that simple comment so very much, as it helped me to adjust the tuning to taper off the top end instead of leaving it flat.
I like detail, but there’s a fine line between detailed and too harsh.
My system has always been leaning towards the harsh side and it’s an issue I’ve been struggling with since the beginning with regard to riding too close to that fine line.
Your subjective opinion was spot on and it helped me to adjust my listening preferences towards a system that can be enjoyable at high volume for hours on end without being fatiguing, yet with plenty of detail.
Miguel Rios helped tune the Time Machine, with a rolled off top end, and frankly, it’s never sounded as good as it does now. I also got feedback at finals from others that my Bass and sub bass were on the lean side. Again, Miguel Rios fixed that issue as well.
In conclusion, your honesty has helped me all along my audiophile journey and for that reason, I’ll always be a fan and friend. 😊 In fact, I turned away a Judge during your demo twice because I favored your opinion more.

Thanks for your tireless work Erin. I really appreciate the candid, insider's guide to how reviews are done, and in particular how you go about them. Integrity of the process is what I look for above anything else. I don't want/need to be entertained, I just want to be treated as an adult who loves music and seeks to make sensible purchasing decisions. On that note, I would like to view your take on standalone DACs versus DACs integrated into a component. I have a hard time believing DACs are much different from each other, and I have not seen the value in buying a standalone DAC. Maybe you've already covered this, if so please post a link.
Brother the logic of you have not tried it, yet you believe there is no benefit from it? After much experimentation with my entire system, the DAC is absolutely the most important component in the chain affecting quality of sound.
My view: Avoid built in DACs. Remember when you got Dolby Pro Logic, then came Dolby Digital then came... All the way to now Dolby Atmos and other competing formats. Each time you needed to buy a new receiver or preamp for the new decoder for that format. Oddly DACs have followed that same sort of path but in quality per dollar. Also each DAC type has a "flavor" augmented by the analog path afterwards within the DAC. Some DACs even let you choose your "flavor" a bit to whether you like a smooth sound or an analytical sound and more. DACs carry the same variations you get with speakers. Sometimes dramatic some time subtle. But every year the quality per dollar improves more than most any other piece of your system.
Re room treatment I would suggest at least trying some diffusers at the main reflection points. Depends a lot on the room size and shape of course what is the best solution. I made myself decent polycylindrical ones by bending slatted wood panels to curved shape (similar to GIK Acoustics SlatFusor PL) and now have a smoother and clearly less echoey frequency response at mids and highs and am comfortable able to listen about 5 to 10dB higher volume levels as before.
Great comment on room treatment! For me it only made the music dead. I am back to the 1970 with adding reflections like Sonab OA12. No expert have recommended this but I like it.
I don't know if this is even in your wheelhouse but I would love a detailed breakdown of all of the major sound formats throughout time. From mono, stereo, Dolby pro logic, DTS, DTS X, Atmos, and any of the others I may have missed. How many discrete channels, what bitrate. etc. etc

The part about acoustic treatment surprised me a bit tbh. Would you not need treatment for a dedicated home theater? recommended reverb time (rt60) is about 0.2-0.6 ms, is there a room that can have such a low reverb without treatment? Would you prefer diffusion instead of absorption?

It's a rare day when I disagree with you, but today is a day. I've never heard a room that "did not" need some kind of absorption material or treatment. The entire point of the stuff is to remove reverb, which all rooms suffer from greatly, from my experience. I documented with measurements, the entire process from beginning to end of one of the rooms I recently treated on my channel. As shown, even with furniture and carpet, this room was just bad! After my home made dirt cheap treatment, it's now good with reverb down in the 200ms range.
Ain't no such animal as a room that is too dead with too little reverb, not in the consumer space. But deadening is the entire goal of room treatment. And it always takes a lot to do any real good, a couple of panels here and there is just a waste of money.

My experience has led to form an opinion that aligns with what Floyd Toole writes about. Some rooms definitely need it. But slapping panels around in a room can often do more damage to the experience as having no panels. We can agree to disagree. 👍

Always, you will never get an argument from me, just the occasional difference in opinion. But I am curious how we are so far apart on this.
To put it point blank, if you're hearing the room, then you are not hearing the speaker! While room reverb can 'enhance' the sound field and effects, it will always color it in the process. If the goal is to just hear the speaker, then you have to make the room disappear. Or so that's my opinion on the matter.
@@Finite-Tuning This depends on so many variables, though. When making a generalization, sometimes it's safer to say "if you don't know what you're doing, don't do it".
In my living room, I have a wall close to my left speaker. In theory, this should introduce a lot of issues and completely wreck the center image. But I have rather big midwoofers and ring radiator tweeters in waveguides, mounted in-wall. With controlled dispersion from ~1k or so, turns out, it's not really an audible issue unless I'm listening very specifically for a loss of imaging precision, and even then, it's really only audible in certain tracks.
With a huge fabric couch, and some furniture here and there, I also need to play fairly loud before other reflections/flutter becomes an issue. At normal volumes, it's really not a thing.
I'm all about facts, but the most important fact is that not every measurable issue is audible, but every single audible issue is measurable.
Don't spend a lifetime searching for and correcting the former.
This is where experiment in your room is required. You cannot put a blaket statement that no treatment is required while in reallity most room (all rooms imo) will r equire some sort of treatment. Just do the simple clap test. if you can hear the reverb of your room imo treatment is a must.
For Movies in Atmos I'd rather have a bit of treatment and more directionality in my speakers and rely on processing to create width.. But for music it's very different.

Cool vid. As far as only looking at the thumbnail because you know a reviewer will like the product: so many caveats to that. Even Gutenberg will preface his likes with product limitations. That’s the real value of RUclips reviews (that are well done). No 1 product is right for everyone, as we all have different expectations. The “limitations” of product X, might not be applicable to me. Or critical to me, but good reviewers discuss this stuff, even if it’s a “positive” review. Great stuff. Don’t quit your day job…joking, your vids are great. 😂
I always wondered how/why you suddenly realiser you needed to buy a Klippel NFS and start measuring speakers. I really feel like that can't be the reason you bought it, it must have something to do with your day job as an engineer right?
I had been measuring speakers for many years before I got the NFS. The NFS makes it MUCH easier. I used to spend 10-15 hours on average manually measuring speakers at 140 different points (70 quasi-anechoic at 2 meters and 70 groundplane). It took forever. Then I’d have to post process the data and make sure it made sense and that I didn’t have a bad measurement (punched wire, duplicate because I forgot to turn the speaker or noise floor issues). Plus, I had to test outdoors which meant I had the deal with the weather or I was otherwise limited by it. It was suddenly that I realized it. It was something I had been wanting since it was first released.

I didn’t like the Heresy either. But Cornwall, LaScala and K-Horns sound pretty good although they are a bit overpriced in my opinion.

Hello, I have a Luxman l505ux mark II integrated amplifier with some B&W 703 s2, in your experience with speakers, which brand and model do you recommend to maximize the experience of my amplifier?
I'd love to see you review more affordable 12" & 15" speaker "hi fi" alternatives... like the Yamaha DZR12, DZR15, DZR315 PA.
Can't afford 12" "hi fi / audiophile" speakers like the JBL L100 Classic, 4349, etc. But, just discovered the DZR PA speakers, and they supposedly sound super clear, undistorted and flat freq response measurements. They don't distort like QSC PAs and I've read they are also better than other equiv priced PAs - JBL SRX, EV ETX, RCF, FBT, etc.
I wonder if they sound as good as JBL or other "hi fi" speakers. They'd be a bargain and would def give that "I won, cuz I found a cheap alternative as good as the super expensive stuff" you mentioned.
If they sound as clean and good as my current Yamaha HS8, just in a bigger 12"-15" format, then I'd be super happy w/ them.

...just look at their inexpensive hi-fi amps! All Japanese components/parts and high quality on the cheap!
They are pa speakers not for critical listening at home
@@misterzero8667 Yes, I know PA speakers are usually crap (I used to rent PA speakers for parties in the early '00s)... but after much research, they supposedly don't sound like any other PA speaker, ever; which are usually harsh sounding, shrill and have scratchy mids/highs. And most older PA "tops" don't have much bass extension (usually only down to 50-60hz @f10)
From what I've read from many diff sources, these relatively newer Yamaha DZR are unlike older PAs... they supposedly sound "hi-fi/audiophile", great for home use, small room & low-volume use too, and sound very quality, super clean, clear, neutral, flat, as well as having excellent bass-extension w/out using subs (12" to 39hz, 15" to 34hz and the 3-way 15" to 31hz).
They also have cloth grills now, unlike other PAs... more aesthetically pleasing for home use.
Just the parts/design alone sound much better than Klipsch Heritage (yeah, I know, Klipsh sucks)... what DZR has that Klipsch doesn't - drivers are cast frames/baskets, proper cabinet bracing, plywood cabinet, actual insulation inside cabinet, most current speaker tech, etc.

If it's worth anything... there's a legitimate sounding audiophile on YT (actually Uses REW & UMik-1) that has owned Genelec 1238 (big 15" monitor, $8.1k ea), Genelec 1032c ($2.5k ea) and Genelec 836 ($5k ea)... and he says the DZR315 sounds better than all those high-end studio monitors and the DZR315 are his current, ideal setup.
He believes they can easily cover the HiFi speakers I mentioned (JBL L100 Classic, Klipsch [yeah I know, a low bar lol])
He says they sound very accurate, flat, neutral, clean, clear, very pleasing, etc., etc.

I'd love to also but I like working on Multimillion dollar machines and Automated robotic systems pays to good 😆 Utube just fun hobby for me but there is reviewers who put in real work / it's not easy !! 1st you have to have Game plan then lighting camera editing (listing) and some do measurements ' shipping returns ' so it can be very time consuming! (Real work)
