I totally agree, I stream 90-95% and the rest of the time, particularly when I am feeling nostalgic… vinyl!
I'm 66 & drank from the same kegs you guys did growing up. I loved the "music first audiophile" observation, VERY well put, and an absolute bullseye. During my years in an independent record store, the worst customers were (some) "audiophiles" who bought LP's to listen for surface noise rather than the recorded content, so that they could indignantly return the record & blame us.
One nearly comical release was the Telarc (?) LP audiophile recording of the "1812 Overture" with the grand finale cannons recorded so hot that no stylus/cartridge known to man could track it. Mercifully, MOST buyers understood that, but it just seemed like trying to wear a welded pair of steel blue jeans. Audiophiles run amok!!!
I remember that recording. WARNING "Real cannons" I think was printed on the label.
That’s one recording that would have. Benefited from being cut so it plays from the inside out. I remember techmoan said something about an edition of Bolero that was cut that way to take advantage of the outer tracks having more space to accommodate the greater dynamics and volume of the end of that piece of music.

😂😂😂 Right? I’m 67, and the battle for bragging rights back then was totally ridiculous. And I admit, I got caught up in it myself, for a while. Today I’ve got a beautiful little Marantz 2245 restored, and two JBL L-166 Horizons from ‘77. I’m quite satisfied with that. 😂
Thank you Skylabs for having this conversation with Ed. I also recall the 70s of what I remember as the heyday of stereo , quad records, open reels, amps and receivers. Much of my current gear is vintage. I feel Skylab’s is similar in the spirit, but I cannot access your store for services, because I am Indiana. Ed has some great stories as well. I recall Fat Julian’s Audio in Atlanta, (and Crazy Larry’s of Indianapolis), and Julian sat me upstairs in large area to listen to Fusalier speakers through Brystan amp, and it was an experience to hear Supertramp music with no restriction on time. Keep the Skylab channel going!
Thank you for this absolutely wonderful conversation! I'm almost 68 years old and your conversation took me back to the time when I just played the heck out of my lp's just because I loved the music! I remember having a kenwood 30?? receiver, pioneer pl51a turntable and infinity 4000a speakers. I did get rid of my kenwood and bought an sae power amp and an sae preamp. Again, thanks for the great conversation!

I seldom make comments on you tube videos but I REALLY enjoyed this one. Great job. Your comments about the music being the most important part of HiFi hit a real cord with me. The biggest part of new equipment, for me, is the ability to hear new music because of streaming. My new equip. is modest but the streaming aspect is fantastic. I can listen to more and different music that wasn't possible in the 70s. True I miss being able to go to the local stereo store and hearing new speakers but the streaming music makes up for that big time. Thanks for your videos.

Ah, this was SUCH an enjoyable clip to watch, I could easily do it for hours. The 'no BS' approach of all the participants was just so refreshing, and Aussies like myself really appreciate that. Great conversation, Kevin. I would like more please. Funny that people looking at speakers wonder how loud they are. My first live concert was Hendrix in 1969 and my ears rang for a full day. Any sound system/media is many steps down from that so to Ed's point, listen to what you like however you can. Thanks to Ed, Kevin and Eric for doing this.
What A BLAST !! My Vintage stereo retail time with Franklin Music was about five years before Ed's, and then there was my Heathkit time. This was fun. Thanks for putting it together.... Rip
I’m watching this again! Ed, you started dating your wife in 1976! Congratulations. I married in 1974. This year we celebrated our 50th anniversary.

Im an audiophile in recovery myself. I caught myself listening to the gear and it broke my heart. I dont own any high end gear. My most expensive piece is a Sansui au517. I listen to and collect speakers designed by Henry K. Its all good.

Great conversation! Very truthful and informative for novices and hardcore enthusiasts. I have been an aspiring audiophile for decades since I got a new Pioneer SX-450 receiver and a hand-down Fisher table and Criterion speakers. That was 1977. Played music great. Then got some HPM speakers for Christmas. In the military in the early 80's, I went through various gear bought at the BX, and local hifi stores. Then had a used MAC MA6100 I loved for decades, traded in six years sgo for a new MA252 integrated. That one didn’t really do anything for me, so sold it last year. It did look nice. But now I have a simple vintage mid-power Kenwood KR4070 receiver bought for $50, and $75 vintage Vector Research VR-5000 receiver. Both mint, found on CL. I alternate using those with my vintage $25 thrift-found Pioneer PL41 turntable, and change out my vintage Model 6, and thrift-found EPI 100 speakers. Real walnut too. Very tiny investment, and it all looks and sounds great to my almost senior ears. In the end, I just didn't want to go down the audiophile gear rabbit hole, and money required. Also, so much snake oil in pursuing that too. Now I am content with my simple old gear, and can just enjoy the music and my huge old vinyl collection. Great points on this interview.

Thanks for having Ed on your channel! Three of my favorite guys in one setting! The late great Roger Russell of McIntosh said that 18 gauge speaker wire was good up to 30 feet. He said the extra resistance added to the damping factor. I'm a Harman Kardon and Yamaha fanboy too.

I turned 64 and grew up with the power wars. Classic Pioneers, Yamaha, Advent and Klipsch. Great hearing wisdom from the old school

I have great memories in my younger years of certain periods of my life that revolved around music. Like driving around after school listening to 8-track tapes in his Mustang. We had great times and heard a lot of great music. I couldn’t begin to recall what kind of stereo he had. I do vividly recall the songs & artists. 👍🏼😎🎶
I can recall the car and player, 63 impala ss and a kraco 8 track. Lots of great memories.

This video reminded me of my dad getting into stereo in the late 50's and 60's. He bought a tube Macintosh amp and separate preamp and a nice but not crazy turntable. I didn't pay any attention to model numbers. He played those through a pair of JansZen electrostatic speakers that I ended up with in about 2010. At some point he had Team Electronics put together a DynaTuner for FM. We grew up with that stereo playing Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Harry Belefonte... and when they left town for a weekend that stereo played rock 'n' roll just fine. Actually the first piece of furniture my parents bought after getting married was a Magnavox mono console with a turntable that played his 78s. He loved listening to music with both of those "systems" and passed that on to all of us kids... I'm 72 now and wish I had that original gear, of course. Thanks for episodes like this.

9 am 6/10 Loved the show. I'm around Ed's age and yes back the we listened to both sides of an LP because we had real musicians and not this computer generated stuff they put out today. And it was original. Thanks guy's.
Taylor Swift's genuine nature is what captivates her audience and makes a connection. There's a lot of great talent out there that's better than Taylor, but can they connect and relate to the audience on a deep personal level? Few can. Taylor nails it 100%. That's why she has a large devoted following. Have you seen the videos of her where she'll jump out of her limo, run up to a young girl on the street and make silly face selfies together, then hug the person, give them free front section tickets to her show? She does stuff like that all of the time.

Loved it. Brought so many lost memories back. I used to cut the lawn (my mid teens} with a '62 Willies Jeep, with gang mowers, and mid 70's 8-tracks, with headphones on. One favorite was Johnny Winters, Still Alive and Well. So many great tunes included that track switch click. I still keep a collection of 8'tracks and player. Now retired, it's finding the right car with an 8-track player to fit them. Also, a great record skip on Ziggy Stardust that became part of the song. Luckily it was at the end, where most skips happened.
loved this! great to listen to all the talk. I grew up during this time (now 69) when you put on an album and held the jacket and cover and read them all; all the time! Many around me don't understand the satisfaction you get from listening to music this way. Getting back to my musical roots and planning on a trip to your store sometime!

Ed is spot on. It's all about the music! Build the best system you can afford on your budget that sounds good to your ears & enjoy it! God knows as a buyer, selling & trader of vintage electronics for almost 20 years I finally realized that it was time to say enough's enough. I'm quite content now & never think about my system at all other than basic upkeep.

Had not heard of this gentleman until now. I will definitely search out his videos. Really enjoyed this format and the discussion of gear vs. the music. In my case I am music enthusiast first, all kinds, and the gear rabbit hole is about hearing the closest thing to a live performance of the music within the confines of my listening space at home.
It's so true - "Music transcends the playback medium", but I still would love to go back in time and hear what my teenage system sounded like with the Blaupunkt am/fm/tape in dash stereo and the Jenson coaxial 6x9s in the rear deck.

My first "real" stereo HiFi system consisted of a Knight-kit transistor tuner and transistor amplifier built from kits, along with 2 AR4x speakers. Even though I had more elaborate stereo systems later on, none of them provided as much audiophile bliss.

A lot of things resonated in this video for me. I used to listen to the equipment over the music, now its the other way around. One of my goosebump setups is a pair of old Tannoys driven by a 0.3watt SE tube amp, just such a magical sound.
I watch every Sunday anyway, but you were correct--not to be missed! I REALLY appreciate the points made about the music being the reason for the equipment.

I'll still be jamming to my Electro Voice Sentry lll's & my Electro Voice Interface Deluxe Series speakers being pushed by my Marantz 2385 receiver . You guys are so cool rapping about the beautiful audio we were left to enjoy by all of those wonderful pioneering genius engineers that created so many working still to this pieces of beautiful art. Love all your contents! I think one of the most important topics brought up was putting an album on no matter what medium it is and listening all the way through. Most of my favorite songs on albums end up being the non-hit tracks. Artist put a lot of work into the order. The old Motown engineer that taught me engineering said post mixing they would get a box of popsicles. After everybody had enjoyed their popsicle they would write a title on each popsicle stick. Then proceeded to start juggling the sticks to see what order worked! Keep up the great work! Next time I’m in Iowa I’ll stop by again.
This may be my rant. Loved this discussion. I don't own any pricy equipment. Dynaco preamp and 200w amp, Paradigm tower speakers, Dual 1229, Sony CDP690, and (some my judge but I refuse to take it out) An SAE parametric equalizer. But, Like in this VLOG, I usually turn on my desktop, listen to you tube with an Altec Lansing speakers\powered bass that I bought for a daughter about 15 yrs ago. (SO GLAD she said she didn't want it) Thanks guys!

I definitely agree that the love of music comes first and the gear comes second and I've nothing against those with ultra-expensive systems if that floats their boat, but I enjoy the sound from more moderately priced gear and the satisfaction of NOT having spent an absolute fortune to have a blast listening to all of my favourite music across a variety of different genres (classical music, opera, soundtracks, classic rock, folk, ragtime, jazz, swing, Tiki/exotica, electronica, country, world music, etc.). :)
Love the attention to actual listening music rather than gear. I do love gear, I develop a connection to it. The HPM-100 and Philips CD-101 from my dad are my most treasured pieces. But it's still a means to an end, enjoy great music. You guys get this, thanks!

Some channels are informative and some are Entertaining, but few are both. These two are both. A crazy Lenny interview would be awesome as well.

I liked this table chat a lot. It reminded me of a time when a couple of friends and I would get together, listen to each other's music on vinyl or R-R tape. I built my first good speakers from Allied / Knight kit two-ways. If I could attach, I would show you myself and friend with my Teac 6010 tape deck. I'm sitting in my living room with KLH model 6 speakers and Time Window 1 speakers. I still have vintage integrated amps, equalizer, etc. I've gone over to the convenience, features and the excellent sound from my Onkyo and Marantz receivers.
Ed discussing what makes him happy as well as both of you, the music, that says it all. Gear is one thing, but the music well reproduced without ear splitting volumes and fatiguing emphasis on highs & lows, is where it's at.
I chat with a few other people, who like myself repair audio gear. Everyone that does, watches your channel. We like your candor and discussions like this, keep it up.

Owned a pair of L810s. Wonderful speakers for their time. Competed with the Mission 770s. I currently own missions, but I do miss that ADS sound. Also owned a pair of L1090s.
