This one's been a long time coming, but it's finally here. We're going to dive deep into the vibrato/bridge tailpiece of the ultra-cool Fender Bronco, a cousin of the Musicmaster from the same era. Special thanks to Patreon supporter Hendo for lending me the guitar!

I played a Dakota Red Bronco at the Guitar Center I worked at in the mid-00s. I didn’t give it the respect it deserved and strummed a few chords, and set it down.
Now I wish I could go back and play it with the reverence it deserved.
Man, Fender has had so many cool models over the years. This particular Bronco is gorgeous!
I had one of these back in 2000 it was a 67 after my mom passed i got home invaded and it was stolen along with so much other stuff i just want this back it was a gift from my mom.. please come back to me..bronco i need you.😢
This really cool. Now I want to find one of these and put a P90 in the bridge position... That's would be a cool one for Fender to reissue and one of their alternate/parallel/paranormal series.

Hey Mike, that was great! I got a '68 Bronco back in the 80s for $40, and still have it. I foolishly added a 2nd pickup, but who knew back then it might become something valuable in the distant future. Never touched the vibrato though, interesting to see how it's supposed to work, and mine clearly isn't set up properly lol!

I had the chance to get a model just like that one, a bronco, black from 77/78 but I didn't and now I can't find one for years ... I guess I'll put it in the "regrets" list and move on ha
Basicly offset vibratos tend to Push the plates back in place, unlike traditional tremolos where springs pull them back in place, very interesting. Im guessing the lower travel and smaller springs really give that vibe and feel of the offset vibratos
You are correct about the function of the plates, but the end result is very similar to a Strat-style floating tremolo. The tension from the spring is still, in effect, pulling on the strings. If there’s any doubt about that, just tighten or loosen the tension screw without even playing the guitar. You’ll notice a huge difference in string tension. If Jags are known for popping strings, it’s because people have way too much tension set in the spring.
You are absolutely right about the lower travel being a big factor in the signature sound.
As a kid (‘99-ish) my little brother got a late 80’s American Fender Bronco. I know it’s a very different guitar, but apparently it was the rarest version. It had the Strat/offset body, Tele style neck, with 2 single coils, and the metal pickguard that is also part of the bridge. It was bright red and I have like 5 dedicated searches saved on Reverb and eBay but I’ve never seen another in that configuration. Anyway, this reminded me of how fun that short-scale beauty was! I’d love to get my hands on another.

Oh wow! I just picked up a '77 Bronco a month ago. What fantastic little guitars they are :)
The guitar wasn't holding tune great with the vibrato when I got it, but fortunately a little nut lube and a tighten of the vibrato cured it. I didn't even take the vibrato off so this is great to see, thanks once again Mike.

I have a 78 bronco that was given to me years ago. I've installed a Seymour Duncan SL59-1 Little 59 in mine, keeping the original in the case for now. I set the guitar up to play slide. The thing screams the blues. These are really cool guitars. Los Angeles

Just found this video! I started my guitar journey with a 1971 dakota red Bronco and a Vibro-Champ, bought from my teacher Bobby Whitley who had Whitley Music Studios outside Atlanta. I was 12! I'm still playing and miss than 1st guitar. Lesson: Never sell your first.
I sold my first and was bummed out for decades. It was a 59 Epiphone Coronet. The originals are selling for over $3000 now so I bought a replacement reissue from Epiphone that was made in China. I'm just blown away how great of a reissue this guitar is. CTS pots, old school every thing, even the head stock is 59, solid mahogany body $400 and it sounds great. Now I feel like I have my old friend back : ) I also own a 78 Bronco which is totally awesome as well. Both of these are killer slide guitars.

Hey Mike, have you seen Göldo's TDG1JM Tremolo? Seems like the Bronco design but to fit Jags/Jazzies. Don't know if they're any good but would be cool to here your thoughts on them! Love the channel and all the tips & info you share for offset guitars 🌟💀
I wish Mastery would develop a “perfected” version of the bronco bridge with their trem arm system and a saddle system with easier intonation.
I remember seeing one of these in the Buddy holly story ,before I knew what a bronco was, and thinking it was weird to have a mustang with only the bridge pickup.

I’ve been looking for a Bronco vibrato for a few years now to finish a 75 bronco neck/77 duo sonic body build. And those guys are really hard to find short of buying a complete bronco. I always thought it looked like a great system one day I’ll find one…. Or find someone to make one on a CNC machine… anyone ever heard of someone who can do this?
It’s so fun I’m sure Fender could re-issue this guitar and it would be a success
i have some bronco knobs in "players grade" condition if the guy wants a set. Tops got a bit melty from being put by some kind of a heat source for a bit too long but they are correct for the period.
I wish my Strat trem worked that well, I've had to lock it off, as it frustrated the hell out of me!

Great vid! What puzzles me is why Leo Fender would redesign a new tremolo/bridge with every new guitar model. Do you know why? And why Fender doesn't seem to be doin this anymore?
Leo Fender was an engineering genius, and probably couldn’t resist the chance to try something new or refine an existing design. Fender does try new things every so often these days, with less than great results. See: the Panorama trem and V-mod pickups.
Leaman Crews I’m a little iffy on the V-mod pickups (i personally don’t like mixing alnico numbers on single coils) but that panorama is really something else.
it's got the same working principle as harmony's/hagstrom's (which are "jazzmaster's in reverse"), but in this case the bridge and the tailpiece are one thing, while in harmony's/hagstrom's it's a separate piece, with much more string lenght behind the bridge
Ironic that this lower end Fender model has a vibrato way better engineered and built than any Gibson.
will the Bronco Vibrato lower pitch as much as a strat trem? Will the arm dive all the way down to the pickguard?

Hi you all, does anybody here know the exact measure of the saddles' screws? i have some metric screws now that dont hold the saddle in place and have some vibration issues. Thanks in advance.

I had the chance to play a bronco like 30 years ago, but sadly that one didn't had the arm so never tried the vibrato. I almost forgot about this model. Now, after mi GAS meter is tingling, lol
That's a really appealing guitar. Gonna keep an eye out. Mike, I wonder if you can address a question which may be dumb. Do Jazzmaster polepiece need to be staggered to match the bridge radius? And if so, do you just push them into position from the back? Mine are totally flat which doesn't make too much sense on a vintage radius and yours _appear_ to be radiused.
Absolutely love Twoodford btw. Calms the anxiety and taught me more than I knew there was to know about acoustics - and mine plays so much better as a result.
Flat pole pieces is fine, don't sweat it
With modern strings, there's no point in staggered pole pieces. Maybe for following the radius, but even then, the inner strings are "felt" by more coil surface, thus compensating for that.
I'm sorry I can't see you also. I love Mr. Ted. I don't prefer vibratos, but I do prefer this type without the separate 'floating' bridge.
It's sort of like a more sophisticated version of the 60s danelectro vibrato

You adjust it by tightening or loosening the 2 bridge posts (the hex head screws). Mike shows this in the video
