It sucks that people get so angry about rejection, even in circumstances like choosing to work on a guitar. Mike, you're a national treasure.
Weird statement here, but I’m glad to hear you’re getting so many inquiries that you can decline work. I think one of the factors that’s drawing people to you is your genuine enthusiasm for unique ideas. Some techs just want to do the same Strat setups 24/7. If I’m ever in Seattle, I hope to get you to work on my offset one day.
I think your transparency and humility separate you from the pack. Even though I’m not one affected by the issues you brought up, I greatly respect and appreciate your honesty in helping people set the right expectations.
You seriously produce some of the best guitar content on youtube. Watching all of your videos back to back really put into perspective the skill required to do the job. Keep producing great content at your own pace because it'll be worth the wait.

The point of Mike's great vids isn't that no one else can do a great job on your guitar. It's that you know what to look for, and what to ask for, to get a great job done - because he's shared all this stuff.

Man I wish I could get a guitar up your way for you to work on! It's totally understandable that you say no to (I'm assuming here) a lot of projects. Understanding and embracing the facets of repair work that you enjoy would have to be such a huge benefit that you've got going on. I hope you're settling in nicely here in the PNW!

Dude...you declined to do some work on my Bass VI for reason #1, and I totally understand (I just thought it would be cool to see a VI setup video, esoecially on my own!), and to your point about climate differences: I took the VI to the lovely fellas at Fountain City, who aren't even across town from me. They did a great job, loved the setup when I picked it up...and less than 2 days later the temp/humidity differences in my house less than 5 miles away negated most of their work, and we had to adjust the setup! It wasn't their work- their revised setup has been great- it really was a matter of a couple of days of settling in a different environment. It's not so crazy that it makes a difference, but it IS whackydoodle HOW MUCH difference it makes.
BTW Mike...I'd still LOVE a VI setup video (even if it's not my VI! 😆) and I know I can't be alone in that! Thanks for all you do!

I do as much as I can myself, but some health issues have made it so that I only have about 30% of the feeling in my right fingertips/hand; sometimes it's just not worth the frustration to DiY it when my hand just won't cooperate. I try to get things as far as I can, and those fellas have been ace at taking things past the finish line when I'm having trouble. And, of course, there are some things I'm just ill equipped for or that are above my pay grade altogether, and I'm always happy with the results from FC. Great people doing great work!
If you haven't, you really should check out their Seuf guitars. They're sooooooo good.

@@Puisheen Just another KC native here to chime in and say that fountainc city and their Seuf guitars are second to none. They refinished the neck and my 90s PRS CE and its one of the best gear decisions I've ever made.

Hey Mike, you brought up very good and valid points. Recently I have been learning how to setup guitars and even thought of modifying guitars I own like adding body contours to an LsL T-bone 2 and your videos have been invaluable. At first I approach things with a level of excitement that made me think I could do anything. However, with time I have come to understand your point on this video that sometimes the better course of action is not fixing nor modifying but either getting a replacement or starting from scratch! One of these projects was wanting to install an Ilitch silent system in my Squier Classic Player Jazzmaster. I ultimately followed your advice that it was probably not worth going through the hassle and instead perhaps looking for silent pickups instead. I ended up getting and Ilitch silent pickguard for one of my teles and it works well enough but there is still noticeable hum. Thinking about how Jazzmaster pickups tend to be noisier than tele single coils I can only imagine the system not being as effective and ultimately not really solving the issue completely! So now I totally get your suggestion on this video! Congrats in the new job and look forward to future videos! On another note, have you ever tried Brandonwound silent Jazzmaster pickups? Cheers!
Appreciate the honesty, integrity, and for sharing your passion for these guitars so freely - great content as always. As a freelance graphic designer I can relate - I have a hard time saying "no" to work occasionally, but sometimes it's just the right thing to do. Sorry to hear you've had some negativity thrown your way lately for doing so.

If people grew up poor like i did, they would have started tinkering with very cheap guitars, and getting them to play as well as possible. You will get better at setups and repairs as you age. Then you dont have to bother a tech with the small things, like swapping a pickup, or doing your setup. Yes, relist the crap body on line, and get a proper one. Big hugs.

@@MrDream-zm1pw Yes, from me too! last year I went to order a Jazzmaster kit but it wasn't in stock and this NIB triple P-90 Haze Jazzmaster from a store in Australia came up for only $241 shipped to US, I bought it and it is beautiful. However even though I purchased tools to do neck work myself, I decided to give it to a local luthier who did a great job setting it up. He marveled at how well this guitar was built and finished. I ended up putting an additional $300 into it which included new locking tuners (even though the stock tuners were not bad) an Fender AVRI tremolo, bone nut and the luthier work. Now my beautiful 2007 Strat VG which I bought NIB just hangs on the wall all lonely. I love this Jazzmaster and it has an attraction that my beloved Fender Strats/Tele's never did. Someday when I get to a big city, I want to try out various Fender JM's just to see if I am missing anything. Good luck Mike in your new location...just recently discovered your channel and love it.

I have a request. Some of my vintage slotted tuners are getting goopy and need cleaned and re-lubricated. I know you've done that in the past. I'd like to learn how to do that myself. If you cross paths with a guitar that needs that done, a step-by-step tutorial like you did with the cavity shielding would be very appreciated.

Straight off, I can’t believe people would have a go at you. In playing for 30 years I’ve met loads of people in the music biz and there are only 3 people I always call “the nicest man in the music biz”. Mike Chylinski former drummer with Drugstore, Terry Edwards session player extraordinaire and you Mike. You give so much of your knowledge and time online, for no payment, to help so many people. I would guess it must be in the thousands by now. Haters, gonna hate …. Forget them and just be you and Keep On, Keeping On my friend.

That’s the hard part of putting yourself out there and getting a lot of people interested in your stuff. That loud outspoken group of people who are impatient or unreasonable increases along with the fans. Keep strong brother and take the stuff that you know is right. The alternative is burnout and stress.
Ha! I’m not in the guitar repair business but this sounds very familiar to me.
I sell Persian rugs and consequently people also bring me rugs to be repaired. Now rugs can be repaired and restored to a great degree but it takes skill and time and people often seem to think it’s something that can be done quickly as if the repair person I take the rug to is just sitting waiting for their rug to come in so they will have work to do.
Tell it will take a month and they’ll call in 10 days to see if it’s done. Tell them that your repair guy has a pile of rugs and it’s impossible to say how long it will be before he’s finished with those jobs and can do yours and they call 3 days later asking if it’s done yet.
It’s the same all over. Everything seems easy if you’re not the one doing the work.

I've just purchased an AO Jazzmaster and there's a slight buzz on the open low E and can't figure out if it's the bridge (most likely I guess!) or the nut. I'm looking to get it set up by a local tech anyway, but just wondered whether it's worth keeping the original bridge and having the set up done - or would you recommend I just go ahead and get the staytrem bridge anyway before getting it installed and set up then?

People should be understanding. A replacement body is an absolute, without a doubt, no brainer.
As an example is not knowing about an instrument, my recent fun example w/ Guitar Center. I knew more about offsets guitars than the “luthier” at the store.
As a side note, my Jaguar needs a good looking at ,and I need someone to refret my original Silvertone Teisco. Can you recommend a good luthier in the Nashville/Chattanooga/Atlanta/ Asheville region? Thanks Mike
Sometimes people have to swallow the bitter pill but sheez no need to be rude when you get quality advice. I had a project I was working on and soon realised I had to let it go. Somethings just aren't realistic.

My favorite guitar is a CIJ telecaster with Bigsby I got from Mike and Mikes. I am not afraid to set up my own guitars and added a Mastery bridge to my Tele. I pulled the trigger on my first offset, a stock Johnny Marr Jaguar (that I plan to keep stock), that I will take delivery from UPS this weekend from OH and I am in TX. It had a recent setup with 10g and I know Mr. Marr suggests EB Power Slinky 11s. How long should I wait to work on it? Which of your videos should I watch to learn the most?
I’ve had 2 Marr Jags (I was forced to sell the first one during 2020 shutdown). And as many times I’ve tried 11’s on it (several), I still prefer the sound and feel of 10’s on it. It’s perfectly stable when set up for it. My Jazzmaster on the other hand demands 11’s (feel, sound, and stability).
Eh, let it settle for a day or two, play it for a bit, and just keep an eye on it over the course of, say, a week. Chances are whenever you step up to 11s (good rec!) you’ll have to make an adjustment or two anyway

Absolutely! Cutting a new nut is like job one of a good tech, I’m sure you can find someone in your area to tackle that one adequately!

I think the only reference to luthiers is what they see on RUclips. Perhaps they dont know where to go in their area and how to get that information. BTW, not cool being mad when someone tells you no. The customer is not always right

I live a ways away from a good guitar tech. The nearest one is about an hour away, which in Midwest terms means very far, and he's always swamped because he's the only one. So I get it.
But people really need to understand that specialized guitar techs several states, or even a country or two, away isn't going to be the best fit for the work they need.
I've had to just dive in head first with a lot of work sometimes and just do my best. The best way to learn is to fail.
But I will say that when a guitar tech is openly honest about what they are and aren't willing to do, it shows integrity which is highly appreciated by everyone.
Really? People get pissed because a guitar tech dosent want or can't fix their problems? I don't know if I should laugh or cry. That is just insane.

Question for commenters who own baritone guitars about setups:
Would any of you consider taking your guitars to a tech who specializes with baritone guitars, or are longer scale length instruments the same difficulty to work with? Specifically, warmoth conversions? As long as you fit a guitar with Fender spacing, warmoth says the necks with fit just fine, but I wonder if I should do that work myself?
For context, I am no luthier, but I know what action I like and I can get a guitar to play reasonably in tune and play the specific way I like. More context, I have a heavy hand, a generally a no conventional technique and setup. Funnily enough, people who play guitars say my guitars need a new setup, but I intentionally made my guitars play the way they do.
With this in mind, what do you, lovely commenters, recommend when it comes to odd setups and baritone guitars?

This is the secret solution for guitar shipping.... step 1 finding a hard shell cooler larger enough for the instrument.. step 2 finding a sleeping bag or bedding that's that magic size where the whole cooler is filled with the guitar center padded all sides... step 3... as many times as possible as large as possible the word fragile should be written upon all sides of cooler... with this method I have never so much as gotten a dent or finger print becuz of the shipping... I didnt invent this.. but it was invented when the need to move human organs for transport for transplants became a thing.. there for ur guitar will be traveling the same way a heart or set of kidney's does... knowing any damage could cause some one to die... which is what it feels like when opening a box and realizing instead of having ur guitar fixed u paid to have it destroyed and gift wrapped like some sort of personal tragedy that's self funded... I've done this over 30times and it's worked each time

Really annoying that someone would value your knowledge and expertise so highly that they want you to work on their guitar, but then disregard all that when you give them an answer they don’t want to hear.
Why am I always able to, without knowing a thing about a person, tell they are in Seattle? I lived there 40 years so I guess it is that but..Or is it the Beard?Naw.....are you a long time resident? If you just moved there then I will say it is the beard.. At last you aren't cringey scary and just plain bad like a few other Seattle area non musician youtubers.
