    Which Doctor could have used more Master appearances? The Third Doctor, ironically. The Three Doctors should have had the Master, The Green Death had a Master fake out when the Doctor probably thought he was behind the insane plot, Planet of the Daleks had a Master sized whole in the story, Planet of the Spiders needed the planned "ending" for the Master, Invasion of the Dinosaurs could have used the Master to be the one behind the ones behind the plot....
    It would probably be easier to name Third Doctor stories that didn't need the Master or have space for him.

  • @picturepainter
    @picturepainter 6 месяцев назад +4

    The first Master story I ever saw was "Time-Flight". Come to think of it, "Time-Flight" was also the first Target Doctor Who novelisation I ever read. One of the people who worked on Doctor Who (Barry Letts I think) did admit that the Master was a bit over-used in the Jon Pertwee era. Because he appeared in five consecutive stories, people were starting to look for him. Though in "Colony In Space" he didn't actually appear until Episode Four. Even when the Master apparently dies ("Planet of Fire") he somehow manages to reappear. As the Master said, "I'm indestructible, the whole universe knows that." John Nathan-Turner said something about the Master being the equivalent of Professor Moriarty. That seems to be a fair comparison.

    While watching the show all at once, I like when the Master doesn't appear for a little while. But now that I've watched the entire show, I'm almost desperate to have them back lol. But I love the classic Masters. The new ones are quite chaotic in comparison and that's a lot of fun but they feel like different characters to Delgado's or Ainley's colder, more calculating interpretations. Anyway, I'm excited to see what happens with the gold tooth and who gets cast in the future!

    I think the only real;y two surprises for me. First was how present the Master was during Davison's era. I've watched all of the classic series but it never really sunk in for me how much Ainley was actually around in that span. Then second, and kinda related, was that Ainley has more appearances than Delgado. It makes complete sense when i reconsider how much I'd not taken in how present he was for Divison's era, but still surprising to have it pointed out given I'm so used to thinking of Delgado as being so present for Pertwee and THE Master in a lot of respects. Ainley I think of more as showing up once or twice for each of the later classic Doctors.

    3020 Master story minutes! WOW 😲
    Richard, using the analysis research time you took to create this video, would you be able to tell us how long it would take you to do the same thing for the appearances of the Daleks? If that is even possible with the Doctor's Number One nemesis over 60 years...

      Jodie would now tie with Hartnell and Smith as having the most Dalek appearances (6) and would be second only to Hartnell for the most Dalek stories (4; I'd count The Power of the Doctor as a Dalek story rather than cameo).
      In terms of runtime, the Master has the most (Daleks have 2870 if you include Power; Cyberman have 1810).

      It’s a point of contention between fans… The Master was actually on his final regeneration when we first met him, so Roger Delgado is technically the 13th Master. Everything after that is either a stolen body or extra regeneration. The two Decayed Masters technically count as one, and some view them as an older version of the Delgado incarnation. But then, some also view Decayed through to Eric Roberts as one incarnation, just with different bodies. It’s all a bit confusing! But I’d probably say eight personally (Delgado, Pratt/Beevers, Ainley, Roberts, Jacobi, Simm, Gomez, Dhawan).

      He only appears as the remains in the urn and snakey thing that briefly slithers around the TARDIS (if I remember correctly?). I guess you could say that counts. Up for debate!

      The Third Doctor, definitely. Roger Delgado appeared in more than any of the others and solely with Jon Pertwee. He also appeared in one of the TV Action comic strips drawn by Gerry Haylock called The Glen Of Sleep.

    Isn't Eric Roberts' Master the same incarnation as Anthony Ainley's and that one is the same incarnation as Decayed while the rest on here are individual incarnations?

    • @StetsonDoctor
      @StetsonDoctor  6 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah, to clarify, I was simply categorising it by actor here. But strictly speaking, some of the actors count as the same incarnation. Trouble is, it then becomes a bit of a minefield 😂 E.g. you could say that Pratt/Beevers are technically older versions of Delgado. But then, you could also say that Decayed through to Roberts is all one incarnation, just with different bodies (I think this is what Big Finish suggests).

      The ring appeared in stories that the Master himself appeared in (that are covered here), whereas the tooth did not 😀

    the five doctors as multiple incarnations of the doctor does this count for additional appearance for the master for the previous four doctors.

    Bi-regeneration and recycling of faces it does allow for onscreen appearances by any of the actors as incarnations we have yet to meet - although it also opens the way for a way around the IP/Trademark conflicts that surround the character of the Rani - we've had the forced regeneration transference between the Master and 13 (i admit at the time I assumed that would lead to the Valeyard) we know the Rani was an amoral scientist who was working on things Whoniverse analogue of Marvel's High Evolutionary and that all three renegades were friends whilst at the Academy on Gallifrey.
    This is how things were and remained so even after the Time War
    we know that classic Who's Triumvirate (Rassilon/Omega/The Other) has become the ROT (Rassilon, Omega, Tecteun) thanks to the jigsaw and fiddling about by the Toymaker. How about a new iteration of the hybrid story - I present to you Missy Ranister, fond of red lippy and nail polish, not evil but deffo antihero material. Genetic splicing of the Master's DNA with the Rani, who married a Mr Flood at some point and is making sure her best friend's life actually happensas best as it can because there is remorse for the disaster that a previous less evolved selves caused.

    One metric you didn't consider: what percentage of a given Doctor's stories were Master stories? The 8th Doctor probably wins, as his number of televised stories is rather low.
    Also, wouldn't the "5 Doctors" also count towards the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Doctors totals?
    And thank you for skipping the Ruth-less False Doctor.
