Etihad B787-10 Greenliner Special Sustainable Flight - Can Flying Go Green?

- On 23rd October, Etihad Airways operated a special sustainable flight onboard their B787-10 “Greenliner” from London to Abu Dhabi. I was onboard this flight to discover what a sustainable flight is all about?
I was initially sceptical about these being marketed as “green” flights, but I discovered a few good initiatives onboard. The flight demonstrated several initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions, including using no plastic in-flight products, coordination with air traffic control for optimized flight routing, use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), contrail avoidance technology and airport handling processes.
The flight was able to perform continuous ascent and descent from both London and Abu Dhabi, to reduce flight time and emissions. After landing, the flight was powered by one engine only in Abu Dhabi. At the end of the flight, I interview the pilot on the technology deployed, coordination with ANSP and other industry stakeholders.
"I am a little sceptical about these green emission flights these days..." Saying this while sitting in business class is kind of weird.
The idea is that the flight becomes as sustainable as possible, there are areas where anything can become more sustainable and less polluting, that being said, being in business class and being sceptical about it being sustainable is justified, the two have nothing to do with each other
@@BigHumz155 you can sit and fly even more people in all economy, than having a business class... the carbon footprint is the same per plane.. but if you fly more people, per capita its a lot less
@@mllcg but the issue is widebody and jumbo aircraft will always have other classes, so if one person flies business, it frees up a more accessible space in economy. In the end some people just require more comfort..
On the other hand, an A320neo can actually go quite a long way, maybe we should just all default to those? 😂

Sam, I have been a long time a geek, I got my ppl at 16 (now 70) thinking I would go on to the airforce and then change to commercial, but when passed the commercial they required a airmans physical and found out I was colorblind to red and green, so I had to change to medicine. I just want to say, that I love the run up of the engines on take off and I believe I am not the only one. It is a magical sound, and I would enjoy hearing it on your videos. Wonderful work, and please continue with these videos that mix the cabin with the cockpit.

I found the information about contrails to be quite interesting. As the saying goes, you start with baby steps. I hope all airlines, and every flight, begins to be sustainable, and then continue improving, with perhaps new innovations. We have to start this journey quickly, even though it may add costs for the airlines (hopefully they don't pass the added costs 100% onto the fare 😂 LOL!). Good video, Sam. I could see that you were exhausted from your flights. I hope you managed to get a good rest.

Don't fool yourself, flying is not "sustainable" and bio fuels are not "green" in any way, probably even worse than traditional ones. This is plain marketing.

So all the effort and energy saved the equivalent of the annual CO2 emissions of 2 passenger cars. That is based on 22 mpg and 11500 miles of driving per year. If that is a daily flight it's 4 cars per day. Take it for what is worth. Contrails holding in heat isn't something I would consider a major problem. Running 1 engine on taxi and not using the APU are more about air quality near airports. LA uses taxi trucks to minimize emissions and CO2. I Like the coffee cups.

Sam that concept is anything but sustainable. There is no way you can get direct routing, constant climb & constant decent in the real world. They might have coordinated that for this specific flight but it’s unrealistic.

I know the challenge are huge but we have to face these challenges and work out a way. We can't simply dismiss the effort in trialing these ideas.
Sam I agree with you 100% as a commercial pilot on a 737BBJ & 777BBJ we have to protect our future in aviation, unfortunately airlines are about dollars a cents. As long as jet fuel is cheaper than alternative fuels the industry will never use it. Having a company like Etihad which is Gov. Owned and subsidies promote such a venture is just a publicity stunt.
Even if the route was optimised that doesn't address the fundamental issue with aeroplanes - the fact that they run on fossil fuels.. It is understandable that you wish to save your profession but the only sustainable solution is to stop flying until there are alternative fuels or energy sources.
Starting to cut the plastic is really good, the problem here is to really get continuous ascent and descent in heavy traffic regions, where delays are common, like London!

The Flightradar24 data was showing too low speed during the flight within 17:00-17:30hrs. Anyways the flight gained back the speed quickly, I think it was a technical glitch….or did you really noticed anything like that!
