Air Canada B787 Cross Country - Hits and Misses

  • After 3 days of raw aviation megafun with Buffalo Airways at Yellowknife, NWT. I am “back to the future” and flew out on Air Canada CRJ900 to Calgary. The CRJ even has a Business Class product. An impressive hot meal was served on the 2 hour flight.
I stayed overnight in Calgary and flew on Air Canada B787-9 Dreamliner to Montreal the next day. The Air Canada lounge in Calgary has decent food selection. I met with two other Canadian travelers there, and they told me the airfare within Canada is sometimes higher than flights to Europe. My flight out of Calgary was delayed by an hour due to a late inbound flight.
Once onboard Air Canada B787, the crew showed me the cockpit and the pilot crew rest area on the B787. A course-by-course full lunch was served onboard with a printed menu and paired wines. The Air Canada B787-9 also features Premium Economy Class.
At the end of the 3.5 hour flight, I highlighted two observed issues with aviation in Canada.
    1. The airfares are high. I was redeeming miles to fly for better value.
    2. If you didn't get a refund but got a voucher instead, given the current high airfare and inflation, the voucher value is unlikely to hold.

The lack of serious competition is what, I believe, allows AC to charge these types of fares. WestJet has recently announced their intention to "re-focus" on the west. Recently, several ULCC's like Lynx, Swoop and Flair have begun operating, so we'll see how well they manage, and if that in any way causes AC to re-price their offerings. We desperately need more airline competition in Canada. Am in full agreement it should simply not cost this much to travel within one's own country. I can say for sure that Canadians are tired of being held hostage by this pseudo-monopoly.

But they have to charge higher landing fees because they don’t get any government funding which gets passed onto the airlines. Same goes for ATC. First of all, I am glad you got a chance to fly in our old ‘piston-pounders’; those Buffalo C-46’ers are how we get our fresh groceries bi-weekly up the MacKenzie Valley.
Now back on topic: the costs to fly within Canada are insane compared to other countries, and try flying up north of you want a real shocker. I live just about a one hour flight north of Yellowknife, and that is close to a $1K round trip ticket. It’s cheaper for us to fly to Australia from Edmonton, Alberta (our primary major hub) than it is to fly 2.5 hours of actual flying time north. If someone can figure out that math, we northerners would love to hear it! When I lived on the east coast of the country, I knew loads of people who would drive to Maine (or on the west coast, Seattle) in order to get better prices on flights. I understand that flying is expensive, but domestic first class is not anything special, nor do I think it costs more to fly 2.5 hours on a big bird than 2.5 flying hours on a 737-300 class.

Good review. I'm going to fly AC next month to Asia and honestly don't have very high expectations. Will do a video reviewing my experience in my channel. Your editing looks very nice. Hope to learn more from you.

The Maple Leaf Lounge in Calgary is IMO the best lounge at least in Canada. I haven’t tried Vancouver post table service ordering but for at least the other major AC hubs, the food offerings leave a lot to be desired. In Toronto specifically, I’ve flown both domestic and international and I was surprised I was served the exact same food options in the international lounge as what was served in the domestic lounge on a consistent basis this year. I mean, for the price, you definitely hope the food choices can be switched up here and there?
I do like Air Canada but for the fares, it does seem ridiculous what they charge. They try hard to be aspirational and upscale but it always just comes across middle of the road. I think the soft product and the pre-departure experience needs to be looked at further. Even with the Signature Suite, MLL has no excuse to feel like a Costco kitchen does it?

Haha. Welcome to Canada buddy. I am Canadian. We purchased AC from YWG to YVR back in June to go to the Iran-Canada soccer game. Anyhow that game got cancelled. I reuested travel voucher from AC ad still aiting despite calling them several times.

Hey Sam, good to see you in Canada! Yes its expensive, but remember Canada is the second largest country in the world
with a population of "only" 33 million. One tenth that of America, a smaller country with a much larger population.

My son got bumped off a flight in business class because a pilot wanted his seat flying to Barcelona from Montreal, and today my son got delayed from Miami to Montreal causing him to miss connecting flight from Montreal to Toronto and is now rented a car to drive so he doesn’t miss work in the morning! I didn’t know that Air Canada was doing you a favour once you booked a business flight class to “try” to get you on a plane! I won’t be booking any more flights on air canada as a consumer I have choices and I will choose another carrier “any other carrier” in the future!

Yes, air fares is ridiculously expensive if you fly domestic within Canadian cities. From YYZ to YVR may cost $800 or more for a return ticket. Even though there is a competitor West Jet, AC fares are still crazy high. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

As a seasoned flyer of AC for over 10 years (pre-pandemic) the prices although high seemed reasonable, fast forward to 2022 and they have tripled. If those in power halved the airport and government taxes more people could afford to fly.
