Is there another way to listen to Pink Floyd? There are a multitude of ways to hear music, but as you say so well, there is only one way to listen to it.

The guy on fire represents a band in the music industry and the other guy shaking his hand represents the record executives or the C.E.O's. What that handshake with the guy on fire represents is the record executive lying to (him/the band) and the band getting BURNED while signing a contract or a deal in the process!! This whole album according to Rodger Waters, The Pink Floyd Lyricist, represents absence and loneliness with "Wish You Were Here" & "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" representing the lonely part and "Have a Cigar" and "Welcome To The Machine" singing about record executive screwing the band over and the "Machine" being the big thing that grinds you up and spits you out in other words the machine is THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!!!!

The success which was sought by them was not achieved until the release of Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, 5 years after Syd's departure. Up until then, the powerful drive which had propelled Roger and Pink Floyd to superstardom was a very distracting factor emotionally. However, after achieving the success that he had dreamed of, Roger realized at what price success had been bought, and the grievance over the tragedy of Syd came welling up and pouring out in the form of lyrics to the piece, and even as tears when Syd happened to show up at the mixing sessions of the song dedicated to him. Bearing no resemblance to the Syd they had once known, the now corpulent and shaven-headed legend seemed as removed from his surroundings as ever, and certainly representative of the figurative theme of ABSENCE that pervaded the album.
Shine on You crazy Diamond -SYD Barrett, he was the original leader of Pink Floyd who became insane from trips on LSD. Roger Water gave tribute to him who they wished could have enjoyed the success they had grown to have since he was mentally institutionalized. Here is my best guess of the cover.the song Have a cigar (spoiler alert) about Pink Floyd getting there first album deal and the flames are of SYD would be burned🤷🏽♂️ from their success to come? Well the album cover is just a guess that part I’m unsure of. ❤️😊❣️
The photo is of a man making a deal with the Devil. Syd wasn't institutionalized for any length of time, and although he was fed tragic doses of LSD for a few weeks, it probably was more of a contributing factor and not the sole cause. He was also a victim of success and growing mental illness.

So he was not able to perform with the guys any longer and left the band. Later got lost in obscurity. I would interpret the cover as what you see - greeting a man in flames. He is both - brightly shining and in great danger, on the edge of losing his mind and insanity. This guy stands for Syd Barrett - "Shine on you crazy diamond". Actually Syd had visited the band in the studio when they recorded the album, but they only later found out that it was him. They didn´t recognize him anymore.

Pink Floyd is hard to describe but their best albums (and "Wish you were here" is one) are like trips to your soul.

I never heard this story until I heard David Gilmore describe it on a documentary. Very sad.

SYD passed away in 2006. There is video of him walking on the street on RUclips.
He did an acoustic version at the meltdown festival which I learnt on my guitar, the man for me is one of the best guitarists ever
