  • Salomon's newest 2020 Trail Running shoe "S-Lab Ultra 3" - Review by Vlad Shatrov - Professional Trail Runner
I wanted to review these shoes (of my own free will) to help others make the best decision on which trail running shoes to get.
As a sponsored athlete with Salomon Running. Getting the right shoe to fit your running style and conditions is super important. With a lighter, sleeker design and improved stability, the S-Lab Ultra 3 is a great addition to any trail runners arsenal.
My current favourite shoe is the S-Lab Ultra 2, but after 30 days I'd have to say that the S-Lab Ultra 3 will be part of my pack as I embark on Coast2Kosci (www.coast2kosci.com/) on Dec 4th 2020.

Very good review on the points made such as the fact that Ultra 3 is a bit more open around the laces which may cause more sand/debris go in between the layers of the shoe and the difficulties to put the shoes on initially. Thank you for the comparison. Helped me deside since in terms of price they are both the same right now.

Very shortly, just a few highlights, unsponsored, comparing them to Sense Pro 3 or S/lab Sense 8: They fit at least 0.5-1.0 size bigger with more room around the heel and midfoot but slightly less in the toe box. The "lace garage" is very difficult to use, more so than in other Salomon shoes. The outsole compound is ridiculously soft, showing excessive wear after the very first run (12k gravel + 8k pavement). They feel reasonably comfy and breathe really well but the fit (this is individual) and durability are disappointing.

Great review .. looking for a shoe for the Coastal high 50km on the Gold Coast- hinterland.
Have a pair of sense 4 pro on order but haven’t tried the slab ultra 3s before..
Seth says only good for 10km ??
Would you buy version 2 or 3 if you had to choose

Vlad, just found your channel and subscribed! Great review! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Ultra 3's. I'm thinking about getting a pair for training/long trail adventures and a 50k trail race later this year. How is the midsole? I have the Speedcross 5 (GTX) and find the midsole in those shoes to be very stiff/firm. Is the Ultra 3's midsole softer?

Is this shoe size too small?

Thanks for the review, do think the 35 second intro is a bit too extra though. Could definitely cut that down.

Oh dear. Life must be so tedious with your attention span mate, unless it's a joke you're making of course.

Time is precious, especially with a baby sleeping. (I also got upvoted so not the only one).
Anyway, if you're interesting in the shoes I definitely rate them. Completed the Lakeland 100km in them the other weekend and felt good. I think for less techy terrain you might be wise going with one of the more cushioned options like Salomon Glide or the Hoka Speedgoats. Only thing to point in is that my pair is really worn down already within 4 months of use and I'm not putting in mad hours or anything.
