  • In this video we take an in-depth look at the Salomon Ultra 3 - an S/LAB, trail shoe aimed at endurance runners looking for a lightweight and cushioned shoe which can take on a mixture of different terrain. I’ve put 100 miles in the shoe so far and share my experiences. Does it live up to the S/LAB hype or are there more affordable offerings?

    I'm enjoying the Salomon Ultraglide for longer distances. Normally a Hoka fan but the Ultraglide fits so well.

      I’ve only tried Hoka’s Speedgoat (3) from their trail line-up, and after being with Salomon for a long time, they were a bit of a revelation in the comfort department. For traction and lightweight, the Salomon’s take it. Would like to try the Ultraglide, heard really good things about it.

    Hello. We went for a 30k this morning across the moors, got stuck in a bog and then accidentally pushed through to do my first marathon. Boom! So, I had been experiencing some calf pain in previous weeks and with a little rest, this seems to have not cropped up today. The run had everything- road, rocks, bogs, soft and hard bridleways, wind, sunshine, clouds, cows and buzzards; and I have to say, my Saucony Peregrine 2’s did not let me down at all. What they lack in max cushioning they gain in pretty much every other area. I don’t know how well I would have faired with a tall stacked shoe on today’s route to be honest. Don’t get me wrong, I am grouching about the place like an old goat right now, but happy with the reliability of my shoes.

      A marathon on the moors is no small feat! Awesome work 👏 I’ve heard great things about the peregrine line-up but have yet to try them - I’ve just put them on my list to try out after your recommendation. We’ve just moved off of the moors to North Devon but glad to say there’s plenty of coastal path and trails to try them out in here ☺️ Well done again on your first marathon! 👏👏👏

    Top notch review. Never tried a salomon shoe but this model does look pretty slick. I have really enjoyed my Hoka ATR 6 might be worth looking at for your ultra shoe I know they are very popular. 😎🤘🏻

      Thanks Ben - enjoyed putting this one together 😊 What’s the drop on those ATRs? Find I struggle sometimes with Hoka’s if they’re on the lower side.

      @@TheVeganRunner you did a cracking job buddy. I think it is a 4 mil drop so it might not work for you then but the cushioning is brilliant. 👍🏻

      @@BenNotley Yeah always love the cushioning and lightweight of Hoka’s but my calves start barking on anything over a half of the drop is that low - seems my ideal range is around 7-10mm. It’s crazy how much difference a few mm can make.

    Great review!!
    This shoe is pretty popular where i am from.
    Which shoes did you end up using? :

      Thanks Chris! It's a great shoe, and still in my rotation - perfect for the summer, but a little firm for anything over marathon distance for me. I'm running 100K in a few weeks time, and currently leaning towards the Pegasus trail 4.

    If you're looking for grip, I love my Hoka Torrent 2, much grippier than my S/Lab Sense 8, but a bit heavier.

      I’ve heard great things about the Torrent 2, will have to check them out - thanks for the heads-up! 👍

    I love to try Salomon but I got wide feet. Sticking to Altra and Hoka wide so far.

    • @TheVeganRunner
      @TheVeganRunner  2 года назад +1

      They do tend to run narrow - but I don’t think your missing out too much if you’re running Hoka’s and Altra’s 👍

    I want a high top running shoe.

      There aren’t many out there - plenty of hiking shoes but few runners. What do you want one for? The ankle support or keeping trail debris out?

      Give the Salomon xa alpine 2 a look it's basically a Salomon Sense Pro with a built in gaiter and mountain orientated outsole. Dynafit make something similar too.

    Did you gave up on on's cloud ultra?

    • @TheVeganRunner
      @TheVeganRunner  2 года назад +1

      Yes - I just couldn’t get on with them. It was the instability and lack of ground feel that finally got on my nerves the most. Otherwise, it was a well built shoe.

      How did you find the sizeing? Would you size half a size up? I'm normally an on cloud shoe wearer.
