I've probably watched over 100 of these 'What's in my pack?' style videos over the years. I dunno why but this is my favorite for sure, you seem like you'd be awesome to hike with.
This made me feel a lot better about carrying my Kelty Salida tent and sleeping bag. I’m new to backpacking and it just seems wasteful to toss out perfectly good gear when that tent has been working for me for five years, in order to save a pound or two.
A pound or two on your back makes you stronger. Carry the gear you own, you love. If you bought it, use it. the perfect gear setup is bullshit. If you're strong at heart and mind, you are physically strong. not to quote nike, but, "just Do it"
Pretty down-to-earth. I like the no nonsense selection of items - larger more comfortable tent, larger pack with room to spare, nothing special in the clothing (although it seemed pretty minimal for the northern CDT and PCT trails)
Rusty what an awesome personality you have. You are the essence of "keep it simple stupid." You are like everyones best friend. Like to buy you a beer sometime and listen to your stories. Thank you for the vid and happy trails.
I am hiking the PCT this summer, and am using the ULA catalyst. Nice to see this awesome fella using it. I already had the catalyst before planning the PCT, and was considering switching out for a hyperlight, but not anymore
Its cool to see that not everyone is going with the metagame of the same gear. Gear should be personal, keep it as light as you can but don't feel the need to get what everyone else has.
I like the philosophy of "the balance between keeping the weight low and maintaining a certain level of comfort". Interesting how different people have their uncomfortable moments...the whole using my finger to apply suave for butt chafe is mortifying, but grabbing any old soap and rubbing off the first micro-layer to get to "new" soap is no problem.
I think you can be UL and still have the same level of comfort. The big difference is the expense. For example I have a Tiger Wall tent and also a Duplex. Both tents are very nice for one person, the Duplex is just way lighter but also much more expensive. Same with my 20 degree guilt, plenty warm but way more money that his sleeping bag. I am older, in my 60s and love long distance backpacking but I need my pack super light to make up for my older body which also has lots of worn parts from skiing, mountain biking and rock climbing to much. Going UL has been a game changer for me. We all use what we need. I find it very interesting what people carry and also what they eat. I am always learning. I like his buff idea. I also like the iPod idea. I need to get mine back out. Thanks so much for that one.
I love how everyone packs their own little comfort items like the iPod for example. Just little things that keep the mood up when it gets tough out there ya know. Audio book are so much easier and you get more variety in a smaller package then trying to pack physical books with you 😅
Really love this! Love that you made this video AFTER your hikes, feel like I’ve seen so many gear vids before hikes which to me doesn’t help me as much as something like this does. Prepping for my first thru hike (LT) and this has been incredibly helpful. Happy trails!
It is nice to see a triple crowner who is not obsessed about joining a certain mfg "gear cult" The "cult members" seem to have forgotten that it is about the hiker.......not the gear. Thank you for taking the time to make the video and good luck in the future.
Wow. Congratulations Rusty. I met you when I was section hiking in VA on the AT. Back then I remember you saying your favorite piece of gear is your trekking poles. Didn’t see any in this video.
He explain how he would use each item in his bag which makes perfect sense. A lot of people don't want to bring the plunger for the Sawyer Squeeze, but all information I have gathered that is the absolute best way to clean the filter 💧💧👍
@@trevor_corey8037 no such thing tbh. What worked for this guy might not work for others and vice versa. Some triple crowners prefer ultralight, some like more comfort. It all comes down to preference
Yeah using that other apple product and carrying a whole other device for much more weight than a bigger battery makes much more sense. Just giving you shit lol.
Thanks so much Pie and Rusty. Both your gear tear down videos are fantastic. So good I am transcribing your lists to check and keep my gear in check (fear creeping adds weight). Of the dozens of videos I watched, yours are the best. The backpackers I'm building my list from are Pie, Rusty, and with some input from Sei So, Dan Stenziano, Trinity Wells, Andrew Skurka, and Adventure Allen, . Keep posting Pie and thanks to you both. Adventure on sirs!
Love the balance of lightweight and comfort. I may be crazy for not just buying from Walmart but I believe that it's important to understand that you are voting with your money. Walmart is not known for ensuring that their manufacturing supply lines are fair or sustainable. I'd rather pay more for peace of mind in knowing that I am not contributing to unfair treatment of workers. It's also by supporting these megacorporations rather than smaller companies that we find that there are less alternatives to places like amazon and Walmart. Once they choke out all competition, they have free reign to do whatever they want.
I use the small body glide stick instead of A+D. I know it weighs a few ounces, butt it's SO worth it. I started to feel a little chafe at the start of a 15 mile day and put that on. I'll never hike without it again
Thank you for a gear list that's not UL. All the same otherwise. Great to see a hiker's kit list with a variety of ideas and inspiration. Scrubby for cleaning yer pot is one I'll be using. Nice one.
Hi, great report. Rusty seems to be a great guy as well. :) I miss however a couple things: -list of the things Rusty has; -total weight of his pack; Thanks in advance
Congrats! Totally agree with you on the crocs - when I get into camp is when I want cushioning and comfort. Love the dryer sheet idea; plan to throw a few of those to help the long trips (sleeping bag, clothes bag, etc...).
great video, just wish people would leave the damn bluetooth speakers at home. I don't think people realize how far sound travels, or they do and just dont care.
pieonthetrail the problem arises when the sound travels far and there are people hiking a half mile behind you. You don’t even know that they’re there yet they have to listen to your music. ( I mean “you” in a general sense.)
Really enjoyable and useful. I am looking at European high mountain trails like the Corsican GR20 and Pyrenees GR100/11 etc Gradually I am changing out all my old pack gear from rugged heavy ish 4 season to lighweight. Its refreshing especially because i hate a heavy pack in the mountains. Thanks

Great gear list video! I love seeing how 'creatures of comfort' pack, it's a refreshing change to the UL wanking contests.
Rusty..you’re way too cool. Love the sunblock stick idea , the loofa and how honest you are. Thank you!
What an accomplishment to have done all three trails. That is what I consider a real accomplishment.
A real accomplishment is submitting an 8000m peak. Walking is not a feat.
@@karupt422 Yes, certainly, climbing an 8000 meter peak is a "Real" accomplishment. But surely your list is not defined by this feat alone.
