    Hi, New Mexico residents here. Looking forward to following you thru our state. If you have any questions feel free to ask, not that we know everything but we are here. As far as your starting in April... you need to be aware that NM spring is windy windy windy and will get down really cold at night. We will be coming down to backpack a 3-day weekend in the Gila around the beginning of May so might see you there. Take care! ~Ron & Robin~

      Awesome, thank you!
      Would you happen to know anything about fishing The Gila river? I have a collapsible,lightweight fly fishing pole that I sometimes take with me on backpacking trips.. (I just catch and release). I haven't looked into the regulations or anything yet, not even sure if the river would be good fishing around the middle to end of April or not? Any information that you may have would be greatly appreciated!
      In either case I sincerely appreciate you following along, and hope you have a great time on your hike as well!

      @@ShakerHikes We don't fish, so can't really give info on that. We have heard there are trout but don't know anything about regs. You will be crossing the river so many times you may not want to stop and fish in it. LOL

    You might consider having the Sealskinz with you from Cuba, NM onward. You will find a lot of snow in the San Pedro Wilderness (immediately after Cuba) along with very large high mountain meadows ( 8,000 - 10,500 ft. elevation) full of snow and icy melting snow runoff... without them you won't lose any toes but your feet and ankles/calves will be freezing. Then a few miles after Ghost Ranch you'll have miles of the same conditions up to Chama (8,000 - 11,000+). ( I live in Santa Fe and am pretty familiar with the CDT in this area as well as the typical conditions.) Good luck, the trail's a blast out here. :-)

    Great video. Enjoyed your AT videos so much. Looking forward to following CDT hike. I hiked the AT in 2005. Used a Granite Gear Vapor Trail pack. Now use a ULA Circuit and torso length foam pad. I use cookless meals. I have not transitioned to a quilt. Use a Western Mountaineering 20 deg Ultralite. I like the attached hood. When it gets really cold I cinch it up so only my nose and mouth are exposed. Happy Trails!

    Try a Heetsheet Emergency blanket. Its bigger, stronger, and quieter than mylar. Wrap atleast 6' of duct tape on one of your poles. Good deal on the shoes. We gotta shop sales. Add some tealight candles and a book of matches in a ziplock for light, heat, and firestarting. If you carried a metal cup you could use it to boil water. The cup could be heated over 4 tealight candles. Bearspray shows up in hiker boxes outside bear areas. Good Luck, Rick

    I absolutely love your content Lighthouse! I followed your AT hike, which I hope to do one day. I'm also a 50s age male backpacker. I have a couple questions. How do you sleep on a closed cell pad? A can't imagine getting good sleep on a thin closed cell pad. Do you sleep on your side or back or ??? And if you don't mind, how do you keep your marriage in good shape when you're away for so long?..... Btw, I'm a huge beer lover too, although an IPA fan. You are truly blessed to have a son that brews beer and lives next door!!! Happy trails on the CDT!!!

      Thank you for following along Rob, it's appreciated!
      I really don't have any problem sleeping on the closed cell foam pad.. I'm usually tired enough in the evening so it doesn't make a difference LOL Site selection is also another factor.....I'm somewhat choosy when possible.I'm both a side and back sleeper.
      I'm not married so that's not a concern on my end.

    Hi! I’m thinking about quitting my job and doing the CDT next year. I’ll be following along for inspiration and help in decision making! Thanks for providing this service 🙂. Are you out on trail right now? Are bear canisters not required on any part of the CDT?

    • @ShakerHikes
      @ShakerHikes  2 года назад +5

      I've been out on the CDT now for about a week. Bear canisters are only required on a very short section which most thru hikers hike through in a day... so they don't bother bringing one (since they don't sleep in that area).
