This is incredible. Its interesting how Stravinsky-ian this sounds while also not sounding like Stravinsky at all. The rhythms, large contrapuntal jumps, root to third to root octave jumps, and modular segments are all sooo stravinsky. However, Copland creates such a whimsical sound here in the 1st and 3rd mvt and the second is tear jerking. Wow. Just wow. I never gave Copland a chance really but with music like this... Its time to start listening. Amazing upload! Thank you!

You can thank Nadia Boulanger for how similar they sound, they both studied with her.

Well, if you start listening, be sure to give his Clarinet Concerto a try! :)

@@trumpetmatt33 Stravinsky never studied with Boulanger. He studied under Rimsky-Korsakov

This is a transcription of Copland's Short Symphony, the rhythmic challenges of which were quite daunting for orchestras of the period.

What a great piece: it never puts a foot wrong. Every note 'costs'. Perfect in its way.

So glad I heard this ! The Variations for Piano show much of the kind of asymmetry pitch, rhythm etc. shown here . Slow mov is gorgeous too! Last mov works very well with its thematic material .What is interesting is that Copland does not try to integrate the sound of the clarinet with strings like Brahms does or like in brahms piano trio. I would like more differentiation even between the various strings even .Interesting in last mov where clar. and piano move together against strings ! Wonderful too in 14th minute (why no ms. numbers in this score ) when 1st vn and cl work together.

Also interesting how Stravinsky's 1953 Septet resembles this work that from 15 years earlier.

This is a slimmer relative of "Appalachian Spring."

Not really a reference recording. A very difficult piece.
