    I can't believe Boeing hasn't run Airbus into the ground (figuratively speaking). Their airplanes can be sold on beauty alone. Then factor in all the innovations Boeing has made for the entire industry....they are an amazing company!!!

    The 777 is my favorite Boeing Aircraft of all time right in front of the 747. The design is beautiful, wings look staggering, and the engines sounds during takeoffs is so breath taking.
    Can't wait for the new 777X to come out and take to the skies!!

    It is basically the idea that the best winglet is the one set at zero degree to the wing tip and as long as possible :-)
    What a beatiful wing !

    I couldn't help but to notice the shape of the bird's wings before they start to curve. You guys are holding back aren't you ;) They begin to curve as the wing reaches it's lightest point. Weight/strength ratio is the obstacle as I assume the limitations. Then again, i know nothing about these things.

    So does this new wing just increase efficiency in flight and thereby reduce fuel consumption?

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 9 лет назад

      +David Smith - That is the idea. For a given wing area, the longer the wing, i.e, the higher its aspect ratio (span/mean chord), the more efficient it is. It is not just a matter of making longer wings, but giving them a higher aspect ratio: they are made longer while maintaining the same total area, so the mean chord (mean distance from leading to trailing edge) is reduced. That is why gliders have long and thin wings - they have short chords with long wingspan, and this high aspect ratio gives them high efficiency.

    • @CRAZYHORSE19682003
      @CRAZYHORSE19682003 9 лет назад

      corisco tupi So until recently we did not have the technology to make such large wings of this shape or was it a result of research and development?

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 9 лет назад

      David Smith The technology for high aspect ratio wings has been available for decades, but other factors such as internal volume and/or thickness for fuel, landing gears, etc, might have made them not as attractive for airliners until the need arose for the very highest efficiency. Exotic curves resembling bird wings, OTOH, are easier made with composite materials, and while those have been used in airliners for many decades, large structural parts with those materials are relatively recent.

    • @Wardog22476
      @Wardog22476 9 лет назад +4

      +Peter Bezemer Not actually, folding wing tips has exist for like over long period of time. You want to see the biggest, Look at the Naval aircraft today in the following aircraft. E-2C Hawkeye, C-2 Greyhound, F/A-18 Hornets, EA-6B Prowlwe, and my old favorite of wingfold is the S-3B Viking.
      Anyone who fears and thinks it isn't safe, probably have seen those wings long enough to understand how 80-100 carrier jets pack on a moving carrier, Taking off and landing.
      Trust me, a twelve foot wing fold is nothing until you see the aircraft I listed for you. Good luck finding a S-3B wing fold, its tricky as it already retired.

      Susan Paulwell Modern Technology can overcome a stupid cargo door design flaw. Plus even if it did come off mid flight into the engine planes don't fly with hydraulics anymore, but with fly by wire tech instead. So sad to see a legend like the DC-10 die. It wasn't a bad plane it just had small problems that the company let grow into a big ones. Trust me the 787 is more of a flawed plane waiting for a catastrophe than the DC-10 ever was.
