Hell yeah! This EP was really fun. I've been listening to Spiritbox throughout their journey (and gone back to explore their roots!) and I think they have just overall such an enjoyable sound. Like I/you/whoever could put on _literally any_ Spiritbox song and I'm going to vibe. They're very humble and sincere. Courtney obviously has such a compelling and impressive voice, but more and more I'm learning how much of their sound is _Mike's guitar._ He has such a great compositional style for my ear that when Courtney wholeass chests a breakdown, it feels as if Mike's _f i l t h y_ guitars laid the crater that she's roaring out from the bottom of. He's so fucking heavy we all get painted with that insta-stank face 😩 Oh yeah, so like, Rotoscope EP is great. It's just a side dish (especially Rotoscope itself) of a different flavor _that they still did so well!_ Eternal Blue is nothing less, a fully competent piece of the whole collection of Spiritbox's expressions.
Like literally, I could probably pick any 4 songs on that album and feel comfortable introducing the album to someone with them. So in that spirit ( 🙃) I'm going to say: *"Sun Killer"* and *"Yellowjacket"* are bangers, especially Yellowjacket's vocal work (a feature w/Sam Carter of Architects, that Spiritbox bassist Josh Gilbert sounds SO GOOD on live). The chorus (sound and lyrics) of Yellowjacket get me hooked every time. _Wheeeeere was the graaaaace when I was askiinnnggg foooorr iiit?_ AHH! Sun Killer is sick to me because Courtney reminds me SO STRONGLY of Amy Lee of Evanescence in that song, and then she also Courtney's it the fuck up right when you need it. It's great. I already blab too much in your comments, so rather than sit here and accidentally tell you why I like every song on Eternal Blue, I'll just vibe the fuck out when you review it. Cheers!
PS: *"Constance"* is one that, despite your inclination, probably deserves a music video supplement at the end of your review after you've peeped it in the Eternal Blue listen. The MV is valuable to the soul of that song, and was also how we were all first introduced to its meaning. It's distinctly more personal a story, that one.

god, i fucking love hysteria. it was my favourite spiritbox song by a long mile until i heard ultraviolet. btw, the little intermission at 11:51 is probably my favourite thing about this song. they tease you with a snippet of the buildup's guitar line and it's just so sneaky. probably the breakdown of 2022 for me

You can watch basically any clip of her doing that Hysteria crescendo live and she goes fuckin HARD. With the stomping, the monstrous voice, and the music, I'm always surprised the sky hasn't actually turned blood red by the time the song ended lmao

It’s interesting to see how much Spiritbox has released in terms of “variety” with their sound. There are lots of people who tend to jump back and forth of them “changing” and are leaning too hard on one side of the spectrum. But the more you listen the more you realize, it’s true that they release what they want to release and make what they make. That’s what I love because that’s also art, art is to be able to branch out and create things that are beyond the mind.
I will say, I definitely recommend listening to their “Singles Collection” which is 5 track EP from 2019. A lot of the this EP tends to go overlooked but has some of what I like to believe is their best work. Especially the tracks “Electric Cross”, “Trust Fall” and “Belcarra. It has more of a prog sound to them which is what I would like to lean more towards.

    • @Trepanation21
      @Trepanation21 8 месяцев назад +2

I was listening to a recent interview with Courtney and Mike and they were asked about what sounds they're interested in for their next release, and they both agreed that they're interested in leaning a bit more prog with their next stuff. Interesting! We'll see!

Without writing a novel I will say I love this EP, but I genuinely love their entire discography. When this first dropped I couldn’t stop listening to Hysteria. I can’t wait for the Eternal Blue reaction, but even more excited for you to listen to the other 2 EPs: self titled Spiritbox from 2017 and Singles Collection from 2019. I still listen to both EPs everyday. Perennial, The Beauty of Suffering, and Bleach Bath still have a chokehold on me. Courtney’s lyricism, and her vocal delivery always connect with me. I finally got to see them live last year on their headliner and open for Shinedown and Papa Roach. Both were incredible, but I can’t wait to see them again. ❤

This EP is so good and was very different from Eternal Blue, what came before and what came after with The Fear Of Fear EP. All 3 songs on here are great, but Hysteria gets the Chef's kiss. The song Rotoscope reminds me of the 90's Alt Rock/Industrial band Garbage. Lots of Shirley Manson vibes and Sew Me Up reminds a little bit of the band Korn.

  • @starrwainwright

Love Hysteria but Rotoscope is definitely my favorite off this EP. It IS so catchy!! As soon as I heard the first few seconds it gave me Garbage 2.0 album, and nine inch nails. Basically that whole industrial synth rock from the 90's and 2000's. ❤

_Immediately!_ Love Rotoscope. It's so fun and nostalgic and I love that they could evoke that so well while still being somehow so distinctly _them_ still. I agree it's probably my favorite from the EP, despite the whole EP being a smiler.

Once you finish Eternal Blue you should check out their early EP and singles as well, they've got some great songs pre-EB that I bet you'll like. Also, love Halsey too! If you haven't listened to her latest album "If I Can't Have Love I Want Power" that she made with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from NIN you definitely should add that to your list! There's a whole movie / narrative that she created along with it that's great, and the backstory of how the album came to be is interesting.

    - Eternal Blue
    - Megan Thee Stallion feat. Spiritbox - Cobra (Rock remix)
    - Blessed Be (single w/ music video)
    - Rule of Nines (single w/ music video)
    - Singles Collection (2019 EP)
    - Spiritbox (2017 EP)

When the title track Rotoscope released, that part of the metal community that always whines everything is 'too poppy' did their thing. Then Hysteria came out and they stopped complaining!
Industrial dancecore is a fun genre. Heavy, harsh, and yet with enough bounce to move to even if you arent moshing.

Rotoscope for me was very different, but in a good way. Once you listen to Eternal Blue, you will understand. It’s almost like they amplified their sound, by making it bigger with more ambience and it was still absolute bangers IMO

Hysteria is the best of the three. This EP showcases two different songs inspired by bands (first one has a very Garbage vibe, while second one is a lot more similar to Korn), and Hysteria, which is kind of the perfect blend of what they can do without intentionally trying to sound like someone else.
