thanks for the comparison! for some reason, the sharpness of image and sound seem better on 2016 than 2017...is it just me? altho i think 2016 dont have the live function which is an important factor.
The twentye 17 model they focused more on the vocal audio so you could hear the person talking. It sound like they pushed up the 1K frequency. That brings a little bit of shine to the voice AKA vocals.
thanks for this. sound is disappointing in the 2017 model :/ but looking at this zoom mic that takes spherical audio, so soon it won't be an issue for me. How is battery life on the new compared to the old?
Thank you for the test! At minute 2:13 how did you made that effect of placing the 2d video screen on top of the 360 vid? You just drop the video in Premiere Pro? Thanks
4:17 can you upload a video showing the same low light scene recorded with different cameras? curious to see how the ricoh theta v compares to the Samsung 360 2016. The title of your video could be "the best low light 360 camera"
3:42 "If you want a professional sound recording you need to do it professionally with a sound recorder" Wow thank you for that gem. I'd have never of guessed that. You are the man!
+marcel-nine-one-one you'd be surprised at how many people ignore this common sense idea- many complaints on this video about 'the sound quality isn't good enough' 😂
+Daryl Adams no probs! Not to my knowledge, however no doubt you'll be able to find one on eBay or Amazon that was made for the 2016- personally though I wouldn't trust them, also it's also hard to shoot 360 effectively underwater since most of the time there's poor visibility 👍
Hello mate. Thanks for the video and keep them coming. I have an interesting question. I'm thinking about the idea of using 360 for theatre/360 short films, and having actors play a scene and putting the audience in an appropriate centre of the action (like Hitchcock's 'Rope' but in 360). Do you know anyone who's tried that? From your video, I assume two problems: First is a logistical nightmare of having all the actors wear lapel/radio mics and mixing later (fewer actors, the better?) Second is the exposure issue of front and back camera. Would the exposure issue would be less of a problem indoors? Would it be better to control the light by shooting indoors at night, so that all light sources are controlled and thus balanced with each other? Your thoughts would be really appreciated. Cheers!
+Nick Cameron hey Nick- yeah light will be better indoors, and you can either record sound through a bunch of external mics or in camera if you absolutely must 👍
very usefull video Ben! Congrats. I keep my opinion: New Gear 360 didnt go too much far from the old one. so i think is better wait for new 360 cam this year.. maybe some 6k cam (or the expensive insta360) . Nice video again, congrats.
PerspeActive ! Thanks as always! For this price point and compatibility, I think the 2017 is probably the best consumer 360 Cam money can buy right now. But lots more amazing cameras coming this year!
Great review Thank you, I desperately want a 360 camera. am I best waiting for later this year or by the Samsung? I have a Samsung S8 and a gear VR would these take good stills so I can view them on my Gear VR?
+Adam Wall thanks- yes both of these cameras are contenders, however please watch my other reviews and comparisons too.. there are many options to choose from!
Thanks for this video! A couple of questions: - If the 2016 version is f2.0, and the 2017 is f2.2 how is it that the low light is worse? Were there any camera settings that were different? - What about the software? Is the software the same between the two, or different? If it's different, can the 2016 use the 2017 software? Thanks!
+Ron Manke hey- my newer videos will answer your questions! And with low light, you're right about the aperture but I think the ISO and shutter speed are higher on the 2017 👍
I saw you mentioned that you could use the new software with the older Gear, but it didn't mention if it was different than the old software. Thanks for the great overview. I'm thinking of getting the old camera because they are clearing them out, but not sure if it's worth it if it's not going to be supported going forward.
Hey man, do you know how long each camera can hold a video recording before overheats? In other words, do you know what the maximum video length for each camera is? (I am looking for this information everywhere and I do not find an answer). Thanks
LIFE in 360 Thanks. But the main reason I want to buy this camera would be to watch the footage back on a Vr headset. So do you know if it looks decent on something like the Ocules rift or upcoming Vr headsets?
jennifergala they're both amazing.. I'd really be happy with either one. But for me the low light performance, stabilization and a few other things make the 2017 a winner 👌🏻
I like the low cost and image of the old Gear 360 but I use Apple computer / phone products. Is there a work around to combine using the old G360 and iPhone/iPad/MacBook Pro? If not, can you recommend a good value 360 video camera for iPhone.
ive heard that you cant Live stream on Facebook with the 2016 version is this right or will an update be available to correct this when the 2017 version comes out ? and... i prefered the sound on the 2016 verion
This is an awesome review. Thanks a lot! BTW, can you please post the settings and softwares you use with the samsung gear 360. Honestly, I have also bought a gear 360 and my videos are not in this much of quality. They are pixaleted and blurry. It will be very helpful if you can post them. Thanks again!
Thank you for these tips! I'm trying to cover a large area for google street view and cannot find the settings to set my gear to shoot at intervals while I'm cycling. Could you please share how to have a batch of stills?
+Pavlo Kobzar you might want to check out my other Gear 360 videos- at the moment the time lapse feature on both actually combines the photos automatically into a video.
well, the unprocessed shots or footage from Gear 360 are in double circular fisheye format, which can be stitched/processed in Action Center or any other software. I've done a timelapse video which I would like to "tear' apart to use frame by frame.
+Pavlo Kobzar yeah this is the unstitched footage.. you could extract screenshots from that, or I'm sure there's another way to save them as separate image files 👍
i need a 360 camera to shoot only indoors. inside houses on a tripod. so low light performance is what I am looking for. the 2016 looks better. in your opinion which is the best low-light performance 360 camera you have tested?
Thanks for this. Good stuff. My #1 question is did Samsung fix the overheat issue? The 2016 overheats after 30 mins of recording to a point to were I am making a 3D printed aluminum heatsink for mine. The other is the MASSIVE downgrade for still images on the 2017 has me concerned.
Thanks for the video, but I was hoping for a review on the battery and overheating. The Gear 360 overheats after 40 minutes. Any issues with the new one like that?
I viewed this in the 4K setting on RUclips and I was shocked to see the resolution on the 2017 appears to be lower than the 2016?!?! I am basing my impression on the door etchings.
+SuperPeteJames they are more or less the same resolution- the specific lighting in each given area of a location can affect clarity significantly. To me, resolution is basically the same between both.
can the old 360 model 2016 works on the new samsung note 8 ? can we connect the 360 to ipad or iphone to transfer pics. i got the 360 and i can only use it with my S7 Edge only. any new compatibility updates with IOS... thanks for the video....
Hi Ben, thanks for the comparison! My Samsung Gear 260 2016 has an issue with timelapses, maybe you can help me with this: single lens timelapses deliver a MP4 file, which does not open in Quicktime, iMovie, FinalCut, DaVinciResolve, etc. Have you ever had this issue? Thanks!
My 2017 gear 360's battery just died. Running it off of a brick is annoying so I want to get a 2016 to be able to change a blown battery. When recording the 2017 gear 360 can record 60 fps video at 1080p. Can the 2016 gear 360 also record 1080p videos at 60 fps?
Nice comparison! The video from the new Gear 360 is waaay more stable than the old one . I wonder if this is because its designed to be handheld or if there is some software at work.
Awesome video! Thanks! Question that I may answer myself. When I try to go live on youtube with the gear 360 2017 and S8 it goes into a "sign in to verify your youtube account" loop. I then read on youtube that I need 1000 subs to go live on youtube platform. This could be a bug? You are well over 1k so Im just curious if you have tried it under 1k subs as well
On PC I can stream live np. I was hoping you knew of a way to get around this with the gear 360 streaming live to youtube as they dont mention this restriction at all. support.google.com/youtube/answer/2474026?hl=en Note: To be eligible to use RUclips live on mobile, your channel must have more than 1,000 subscribers.
A Japanese Dream I haven't tested live streaming yet lol.. I'll do it soon when I get a spare second. But I doubt that would be a permanent thing because most people have under 1000 subs.
So the difference are what? Let's see: - 2016 version: weaker range, weaker recording and photos at night, less wide range, better battery, advantage of a tripod + handle (2 in 1), advantage that is less obvious, you can put it on a helmet and look aestethic, good price -2017 version: has the advantage for a 2k live stream, better wide range, better quality, it costs more, and even more if you want a tripod, easier to handle if you go for selfies and recording by yourself, weaker battery, the price is almost double, especially if you want a tripod, better recording and photos at night So overall, which one do you think it's better?
hey thanks for the comparison. I recently bought the 2017 Gear 360 camera and it does well but I feel that it would work better in an Android environment, I feel that its so limited/buggy on iOS that I'm tempted to swap to a Theta SC. What are your thoughts on a comparison on these two, the Theta SC vs Gear 360 2017? I wrote this question on one of your instagram pics but not sure if you saw it. :)
Izzy Cordova oops sorry! I get lots of messages on Instagram and can't always keep up 😂 I'd say Gear 360 1000%.. I have an iPhone 6 and it works pretty well with it. You might want to check out my Gear 360 vs. Theta S comparison.. the SC and the 2017 are very similar cameras to those 2 👍
Hi! How can I export a picture of my gear 360 (2017) to Facebook? The normal picture off the chip does not work as 360 :( action director lets me export videos but no pictures.
to my eye the 2016 model seems sharper, although the slight increase in resolution suggests otherwise. Clearly 4k resolution is still to few pixels for a 360 degree of view - since everything looks smeared and pixellated, like 480p on a normal narrow FOV camera back in the day.
+kniefi yeah you’d need like 20k to even get something that looks HD in 360. Still though the technology is awesome and people forgive soft resolution for the amazing experience 👍
I'm on a tight budget for a bit and I was very close to picking up the 2016 due to cost, but this definitely sold me on the 2017. look forward to checking out your other stuff
If I had the 2016 model this wouldn't be enough to justify the upgrade. As I don't but have the LG360 with a Battery on it's way out. I've pre ordered it.
The 2016 seems sharper to me...could be better light at that time of day....my 2016 360 keeps shutting down (over heating) after a half hour....anyone have any solutions here?...thank you very much!:)
rebelmachine sharpness seems pretty even to me :) and sorry, overheating hasn't been an issue for me but maybe it's because I live in a nice climate and I usually don't run the camera for a long time.
Quite big difference in sound I think!. and it will matter since carrying around a external recorder would be a big hassle. There will be more regular users than pro.
Hmm, my impression based on this video is that 2017 has better colors, while 2016 is more grayish, but 2016 shows details better. I tend to prefer when a camera shows colors better, because things looks better then i think. But yeah the sound was much better on 2016
+kpunkt klaviermusik honestly this is one singular situation and NOT an accurate example of what the sound is capable of. I'm doing another comparison soon where I'll test them out in more situations so definitely subscribe for that!
I think the would have been a better comparison had both camera been displaying the exact same thing. One pointing forward while the other shooting backwards, doesn't allow you to compare the exact same scene.
Yes, I understand. I was interested in how both cameras showed skin tones, and other things at the same time for a better comparison. Don't get me wrong, I liked the review and it was good to see both cameras in action.
thanks for the comparison! for some reason, the sharpness of image and sound seem better on 2016 than 2017...is it just me? altho i think 2016 dont have the live function which is an important factor.
No worries! To me, sharpness is pretty similar in both.. sound you're probably right about the 2016. And yeah, live streaming will be interesting :)
i think the spatial resolution is affected due to more chromatic aberrations in the 2017 version.
+Jeff Wenz check out my review of the new camera.. I recorded for 1 hour 20 minutes of 4K video before the battery died!
Thank you for the test! At minute 2:13 how did you made that effect of placing the 2d video screen on top of the 360 vid? You just drop the video in Premiere Pro? Thanks
Bruno Garcia hey, that's correct! Premiere 👍
Thanks!
liked the review 👍 split screen was a great idea.
+Tampatec thanks 😎
4:17 can you upload a video showing the same low light scene recorded with different cameras? curious to see how the ricoh theta v compares to the Samsung 360 2016. The title of your video could be "the best low light 360 camera"
Already done, look through my channel
Super review 🔥 👍
Ps: to me the sound 🔊 from the 2016 sounds warmer, the 2017 sounds very clear and crisp
Great video! Precisely what I was looking for. No fluff, no excessive ranting.... Just the meat! Thanks!
+InterceptOne glad it was useful 👊🏻
3:42 "If you want a professional sound recording you need to do it professionally with a sound recorder" Wow thank you for that gem. I'd have never of guessed that. You are the man!

What editing software did you use for the text and the picture-in-picture element at 2:13
Chosen Children Ministries hey, I used Adobe premiere for this 👍👍👍
Thanks!
Very helpful, thanks! Would you happen to know if they make a waterproof case for the 2016?
+Daryl Adams no probs! Not to my knowledge, however no doubt you'll be able to find one on eBay or Amazon that was made for the 2016- personally though I wouldn't trust them, also it's also hard to shoot 360 effectively underwater since most of the time there's poor visibility 👍

Thank you for explaining the differences between the two.
Solid video. I love how it just took me 20 minutes to watch a 6 minute video because I had to keep going back to see different angles. :D
Ha- glad it helped!
Very good video I consult you for what is photography which of the 2 is better and in what format they work thanks
I was so looking for this kind of review! Perfect!
+Ankur Gandhi all good my friend!
Ankur Gandhi Yeah, this side by side whilst still retaining the 360 was incredible. Definitely do reviews like this for comparisons.
Super great video and love the side by side. Thank you.
No worries!!! Thanks for the kind words.
Great Video and comparison thanks, need to get myself a Samsung Gear 360 (1st edition for photos now)
have you tried any lighting for 360 night filming? I just had just got the camera for urbexing but I end up doing a lot of night filming as well.
DDF GhostHunting nah not really.. too much effort to light 360s and there's nothing I really need to shoot at night anyway
LIFE in 360 fair enough
Thank you so much.!Your videos are super helpful. What program did you use to stitch the separate videos?
+wteva99 no problem! I used adobe premiere 👍

LIFE in 360 awesome, thanks!
Finally. A review of a 360 camera that actually uses the cameras in 360!!
👍
Thank you for the comparison. It helps so much!
+Katherine coull no worries, glad to hear it!
Hey man, do you know how long each camera can hold a video recording before overheats? In other words, do you know what the maximum video length for each camera is? (I am looking for this information everywhere and I do not find an answer). Thanks
+Carlos Biagolini 2017 performs better- see my review of it for an overheating test. 2016 varies- anywhere from 20-90 minutes 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Love the video. Great work! Would love to see you do a comparison of photos on both cameras.
Mark Marx thanks Mark! Absolutely, that's coming soon my friend.
Does it look sharper on a VR headset?! Because it looks ok on mobile but on a 13 inch laptop ig doesn’t look good at all
+Random. Looks best on mobile 👍
LIFE in 360 Thanks. But the main reason I want to buy this camera would be to watch the footage back on a Vr headset. So do you know if it looks decent on something like the Ocules rift or upcoming Vr headsets?
+Random. It’s the same footage just viewed differently.. headsets usually magnify the softness of 360 video
Thank you for this review. I am in the market and this has helped me so much. Thank you once again.
No worries 👍
Your videos have been very helpful, they are very good. Do you know where I can buy ger 360 lenses (2017)? Greetings from Cali, Colombia
2016 is better to me.
jennifergala they're both amazing.. I'd really be happy with either one. But for me the low light performance, stabilization and a few other things make the 2017 a winner 👌🏻
Did you watch to the end? The dark footage alone makes the 2017 much better.

Not really unfortunately. Check out my channel though for gear recommendations!

Dancefmlive com correct.. no live streaming with the 2016
COULD THIS BE AN UPDATE THEY COULD DO
Dancefmlive com NOPE
how did you add text to a 360 video and how did you convert it into a suitable format for youtube?
I have many tutorials on my channel :)
+Ashan Ranasinghe no problem! You should definitely check out my other videos since I post my workflows there 👍
One question. If I bought the 2016 model will it work with the S8+ And the new vr headset ?
+Michael Booth yup 👍
Thank you for these tips! I'm trying to cover a large area for google street view and cannot find the settings to set my gear to shoot at intervals while I'm cycling. Could you please share how to have a batch of stills?
+Pavlo Kobzar you might want to check out my other Gear 360 videos- at the moment the time lapse feature on both actually combines the photos automatically into a video.
LIFE in 360 thanks, but is there a way to extract dual fisheye frames from the footage?
Pavlo Kobzar what do you mean by dual fisheye frames?
well, the unprocessed shots or footage from Gear 360 are in double circular fisheye format, which can be stitched/processed in Action Center or any other software.

+gibbage1 hey- you might want to check out my official review of the camera.. I cover all of these things 😎
I did! Thanks. Keep up the good work. I wish someone would come out with a "mid" range 360 camera.
+gibbage1 I think Kodak is the answer there! As well as GoPro's new camera coming soon 🙂
I like how you filmed the review in 360 view, it allows you to see for yourself!!
Nicely done
+Lewys Cousins thanks, glad you like it :)

Woah! Nice use of depth of field. I haven't written woah for 8 years!
+James Hart depth of field?
Thanks for the video, but I was hoping for a review on the battery and overheating. The Gear 360 overheats after 40 minutes. Any issues with the new one like that?
+Michael Ma yes I made a full review of the 2017 camera including an overheating test- just look on my channel 👍
Great review a lot of people have been very negative about 2017 :(
I viewed this in the 4K setting on RUclips and I was shocked to see the resolution on the 2017 appears to be lower than the 2016?!?! I am basing my impression on the door etchings.

i got the 360 and i can only use it with my S7 Edge only. any new compatibility updates with IOS...
thanks for the video....
+Abdulla Bin Kuwair not sure but I’m guessing yes 👍
Hi Ben, thanks for the comparison! My Samsung Gear 260 2016 has an issue with timelapses, maybe you can help me with this: single lens timelapses deliver a MP4 file, which does not open in Quicktime, iMovie, FinalCut, DaVinciResolve, etc. Have you ever had this issue? Thanks!
+Bau.media hey- honestly I've never tried single lens timelapses.. I think using a smartphone for this will give you less issues!
excelent, how application do you use to edit videos?
+hathingenioso I use Adobe Premiere 👍
sad there is still no manual control on the camera photo. I still like my ricoh theta S better for night photography
My 2017 gear 360's battery just died. Running it off of a brick is annoying so I want to get a 2016 to be able to change a blown battery. When recording the 2017 gear 360 can record 60 fps video at 1080p. Can the 2016 gear 360 also record 1080p videos at 60 fps?
nice comparison, clear useful, thanks!
👍
This is incredible! How did you upload it so sharp?
+Rajiv Malhotra thanks- just exported and uploaded at the full 4k resolution 👍
Nice review, mate!! Thanks!!
Marcelo Araujo :: TVBAR cheers Marcelo 🍻
0:52 what are you doing? hahahahahha
I have a 2016 and find the stitching is terrible, what is the 2017 model like for it?
Watch my review :)
Did I miss it? Which camera is which? I only assume the 2016 is on the left?
+MrEye4get all shots are labeled :)
Video is fake, you actually holding two Ice creams in your hands, shadow doesn't lie.
Retronaut you got me 🍦😂🍦
Is it water resistant?
the cheapo lg 360 can do spatial audio and it sounded pretty cool
What is the 2017 Gear 360 like for taking tiny planet photos?
Mark Marx very good actually! I'll hopefully release a video tomorrow about it 👍👍👍
Nice comparison! The video from the new Gear 360 is waaay more stable than the old one . I wonder if this is because its designed to be handheld or if there is some software at work.
The 360 Guy thanks! This is definitely an improvement in their inbuilt image stabilization, which is part of the camera build 👍
Hello! Can i use it with my Ipad 4 Mini? Thanks!
+Ideas Colgadas most probably 👌🏻
Please help take from library or shopping complex. Then we can know if text capturing is possible
does 2017 have Google Street view connect in the menu like the 2016
I haven't found that option, but i'd say there's a good chance they'll introduce it soon if they haven't done so yet.
Hi, what is with picture quality? 2017 has lower resolution.... how does it look like when you compare 2016 and 2017 picture?
Filip Jukić hi Filip, I will definitely compare the image quality in one of my next videos, so be sure to subscribe 👍
Thanks for the very helpful reviews! I just bought the 2016 version from Amazon for $75. At this price I just couldn't resist :-)
Nice!
Very helpful comparison, Ben!
Thanks Mic! Hope to see yours soon ;)
Very good comparison video!
+Eddie H thankyou sir!
To get goo stitch you need to clean your lenses with a cloth supplied.

thanks so much for the quick reply. i cant find anything about live anywhere in the creator studio app. :(

- 2016 version: weaker range, weaker recording and photos at night, less wide range, better battery, advantage of a tripod + handle (2 in 1), advantage that is less obvious, you can put it on a helmet and look aestethic, good price
-2017 version: has the advantage for a 2k live stream, better wide range, better quality, it costs more, and even more if you want a tripod, easier to handle if you go for selfies and recording by yourself, weaker battery, the price is almost double, especially if you want a tripod, better recording and photos at night
So overall, which one do you think it's better?
+ranker4 I cant really add anything more to the two comparisons I made on my channel. Honestly I’d say forget about it and get a Xiaomi 😂
Thank you for this !!
+StageCraftVR no problem!
hey thanks for the comparison.
Florian Kleinschmidt I'd recommend uploading to your phone- it's very easy to share from the app 🙂
Thanks but does that mean I'll get those pictures in lower quality?
Nope!
So not good for mountain bike rising on rough fast trails?
Nah you’ll want a camera with stabilization- check out my recent vids 👍
thanks for the review I I think I will take the 2017 !
keep up the good work
have a great day
Great 👍
has this released in the US yet??
+Gray F yup! Check the links in the description.
LIFE in 360 How come like no stores have it in stock until the 27th?
+Gray F did you check the amazon link in the description?
Спасибо!!!!! Обзор просто супер :))))
Thank u. Very informative.
how would this be for recording my bike rides ? would it look super crap?
+Alexi Thunderbird could be ok, but I'd recommend the Xiaomi camera since it has stabilization 👍
to my eye the 2016 model seems sharper, although the slight increase in resolution suggests otherwise.
Thank you so much for posting this
+Jeongwoon Eun no problem!
Can we use the 2016 model with Apple devices yet?
+orcinoman nope, but check my stitching tutorial if you're thinking about stitching on iMac 👍
Very helpful. Thanks so much!
+timmymacnj glad to hear it 😎
I'm on a tight budget for a bit and I was very close to picking up the 2016 due to cost, but this definitely sold me on the 2017. look forward to checking out your other stuff
If I had the 2016 model this wouldn't be enough to justify the upgrade.
As I don't but have the LG360 with a Battery on it's way out. I've pre ordered it.
Cledus Snow I think there are a few other reasons to choose the new one, if you watch the review I just posted 👍
Do you need a samsung phone to use with it?
+Igor Lavresh 2016 yes, 2017 no!
Awesome review
Thanks a lot!
I can do lives in facebook or instagram with 2016 model?
+Raphael Volpe nope!
Great info, exactly what I was looking for.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your reply on this!
But yeah the sound was much better on 2016
+ketchup check out the 2nd part of my comparison.. you'll see that the 'look' is basically the same but they differ in many other ways 👍
excellent comparison subscribing ; )
Glad you enjoyed it!
can we using the cam with no samsung phone ?
+Issa2008ful the new one is also compatible with iPhone! See my recent review on my channel 👍
No Iphone,
i talk about Chines phone, but Android phone of course
THANK YOU!
I really wanted the 2017 - until I heard the sound. The sound of the 2016 wasn't that bad.
+kpunkt klaviermusik honestly this is one singular situation and NOT an accurate example of what the sound is capable of. I'm doing another comparison soon where I'll test them out in more situations so definitely subscribe for that!
LIFE in 360 A detailed comparison of the sound quality would be very interesting. Thanks for the response!
waaait I thoght they r both 4k but the new can do 1080s live
I think the would have been a better comparison had both camera been displaying the exact same thing. One pointing forward while the other shooting backwards, doesn't allow you to compare the exact same scene.
I get your point, although the lighting and setup was basically the same. It’s more side by side as opposed to front and back 👍
Yes, I understand. I was interested in how both cameras showed skin tones, and other things at the same time for a better comparison. Don't get me wrong, I liked the review and it was good to see both cameras in action.
Is this good for virtual tours ?
Nope
Posible make photos?
Yes
Then what is good for beginner ?
Either of these, also check out my newer videos! Xiaomi is hard to beat
