I was curious myself but, at least on the speakers on my phone, the difference is massive. The 2016 sounds professional and perfect the 2017 sounds tinny and hollow. Just the huge difference if you've got decent speakers on your device
I take my 360... run it through SoundForge and Waves Mercury plugins. I haven't used the 2017 but I can assure the 2016 ball records actually better than my S9 plus and S8 plus and Apple 12. Depth. Character. I need more definition in the video myself. Too small and when I zoom in digitally it's pixelated. I want to use it like a flat map and record once and have multiple things to use over and over to fill my stock box.
After I follow your channel I decided to bought the 2017 one and SS S7edge. Because it compatible with Phone with android 7.0 but it open my world to take new style of photos in Thailand. Thank you for many techniques, I got from you. :)
Terrific review, except for a couple of points. #1. The sound. The old version 1 of the Gear 360 is barely any worse than the main audio recording quality, which was probably recorded on a much better device. Meanwhile the sound recorded from the updated newer camera had no bass, or upper frequencies. #2. The "lens flare" in the older camera is not actually lens flare at all. The lines you see in the image is the reflection of the grooved or stepped moulding of the plastic bezel around the actual lens, inside the protective dome. Those of us who have broken, scratched, removed the protective dome, or technically savvy enough to mod the bezel, do not get the reflections of the barrel in the protective dome. Other than those two inaccuracies...excellent video review in general
Thanks for doing this video. anyways i will go with the 2016 because it is not as bulky in the height department. and when you put it on a bike mount or a helmet mount it does not stick up as much. also batteries can be swapped in the 2016
I bought the 2016 model on Amazon in 2017 for only $94. After seeing the comparison, I'm glad I got the 2016 model. Plan on using it on the Indianapolis Canal Gondola ride. Had it mounted on the top of my car with a suction mount and it worked great.

the significant difference is the 1080s live streaming from the 2017 .....but the samples I have seen r really bad quality and the wobble he mentioned about the 2017 is quite annoying.... until it's fixed so if the 2016 is way cheaper....on a sale or second hand with warranty left over it looks like the better choice

Thanks a lot for the complete review, my G360 2016 rear lens just died today because of overheating... The camera froze while turning on and my gf couldn't manage to get the stucked battery out on her own, by the time she reached me the rear lense was dead (about 1h later). So easy battery access could potentially save your camera from damage, it's not only for long shooting days, just saying :) This review was super helpful, especially the part on the fog pb because I really was wondering if Samsung fixed it. I couldn't find anyone addressing this issue, but now I know thanks to you ! Keep on the good work. Cheers
If your girlfriend gets stuck in such a situation again, tell her to go to the nearest electronics store, or a hardware store if she can't find an electronics store. Even getting a bag of ice from a restaurant, placing the camera on top of the bag for just a few minutes might lower it's temperature enough to save it. It must have been very hot the day she shot the video as, mine hasn't fogged up or over heated thus far.
The 2016 model can be removed from the tripod and mounted to a helmet ( with the Samsung Mount Kit for eg), which is a big bonus for me. Imagine the 2017 model stuck on top of your helmet, you can guess what it would look like !! Another bonus is in the UK, the 2016 costs £89 while the 2017 is £206.
Right now, as I am typing this, amazon has the 2016 for $145 new shipped and sold by them. I had $75 in bestbuy reward points, so I went into the store had them price match the $145 which they did, then used my $75 and now my 2016 model is $75 total after tax. Needless to say, at that price point, it cannot be beat. I have a SJcam4000, Hero 3 White, and 80D Canon. So this is a nice toy at that price.

Does not disprove my statement. Sure you can buy a high class microphone along with a portable recorder. But you are comparing two cameras here. The 360 (2017) sounds like there is a high-pass filter on it to me.

And not everyone wants to carry around an extra device ((even though it's improving the sound massively) So you should compare the sound on a lower level. superb video, great info. I love my 2016 as Im primarily into photography and the older model takes amazing images BUT I might get the new one as well just for video? PS the 2016 sound is way way better.
the problem with the 2017 battery is more about ....if u don't use it regularly or whatever and the battery is dead in 1-2 years ......not so much about popping in another battery to keep going

I'm looking at a 2016, but only have an iphone, but I don't care about using either with my phone, are you saying they can't be used as a stand alone camera, where I can download footage from sd card to my pc?
I have the 2016 version, and the only things I really don't like, and had hoped they would fix (even as a software upgrade), is the stitching and the resolution / overall image quality, so it's weird to see that the new version is actually _worse_ there. Plus the 2017 model, even though slimmer, is bigger since you can't remove the base (or did I misunderstand?). Plus better pictures in darker environments with the 2016... I guess I'll keep my 2016 version.
LIFE in 360 the newer version can't or can it? I think it would be fairly cumbersome standing up that high off of a helmet. Still I am currious, can you screw some sort of mount into the second generation model?

Thanks for the review. I have a gear360 2017, using s10pus and galaxy tab s6 with Android 10 one UI 2.0. recently i can no longer access the gear card to transfer the photos directly to the s10pus. Samsung said that disabled this function for Android 10. This is a major disrespect to the consumer user. Do you recommend a third-party app to stitch stitch photos and videos together? I am not familiar with the V360 app, but I would just like to save the photos in the gallery together. Thank you.
+Dimas Videomaker given the lesser resolution, if you zoom in a bit it's going to show as soft. Try again in more controlled lighting and see if there's a difference 👍
Ben do u know about printed 360 photos .....it can be done with a 3d printer using gypsum ......also it can be done with paper but it's a bit time consuming ......I did a video about it recently .....sorry if I have mentioned this before ...I don't remember
I hate it if they make stuff with unremovable battery , it limits you and obligates you to buy another camera if the battery dies. Sending it in to replace the battery would probably cost as much as buying a new camera.
Did they not lower the resolution in order to make the sensor less crowded (as it's smaller) and get better low light performance..... relatively speaking....

+json405 thanks- honestly I'm not sure about that one.. it would be a lot of work to set it up every time and you'd need to host it privately through RUclips or elsewhere. My suggestion would be streaming through a non-360 camera that is better equipped for surveillance.
Why does my gear 360 2016 look like there is a connection between the front and rear cameras (I see a few pictures that are missing between stirching, i see the border,, not 360 degrees smooth) ? 😓

Hi, I'm gonna buy one of those cams, but I'd want to use it with my Huawei Mate 8 (modded manager app). Maybe does the older one require a less powerful phone than the 2017 device? Or do they both require the same minimum hardware?

I'm late to this video but I have two questions, right now I'm considering the 2016 model because of price and sound so these questions are mainly for that camera. Do you know if I can edit the 360 video in adobe premiere elements 14? My second question is regarding battery life. How long does it last if it is continually recording in a room? I'm having three problems with my 2017 unit: 1) It overheats, causing the recording to stop. 2) A long recording is split up into multiple MP4 files under 2GB each, even though the SD card was formatted in camera to exFAT. 3) The Mac desktop software does not install, complaining of incompatible VGA graphics card. My MacBook Pro has Intel HD 4000. Any help with any of these problems?
+Douglas Shieh 1) are you shooting in a climate with a not-too-hot temperature, and using a fast (95mb/s+) micro SD card? 2) almost all video cameras divide really long clips up into shorter ones, which you can reconnect later in your editor. 3) if you have an older computer, which it sounds like you do, the graphics card won't be fast enough to handle 4k footage. Gotta have good hardware if you want to process high res video 👍

+Unique Photo and Video it doesn't record audio separately so it's joined to the .mp4 video file. And there is a wind filter which you can activate within the app for both, although without a proper windsock there's not a whole lot something like that can do.

Heya. The 2017 footage is very noisy for me, even outside in sunlight. I have the iso set to lowest at 400. I'm stitching via S8. When I view it in the Gear VR headset it's so flippin noisey. I know the pixels are getting stretched in a headset. But my clips seem way noisier than yours(and you've uploaded yours to YT too ha) Any other tips? I have HDR on, but is that doing anything for video shooting. I seem to remember 2016 footage being less noisey. Cheers!
+Matt Oliver I know what you mean! Hmm.. will test this further. But for now I'd say play around with the exposure settings as much as you can to try and reduce it, including white balance, exposure compensation, HDR etc.

Tampatec if you use a battery pack with a long micro USB power cable, you can run the camera longer without it overheating.

john doe check the phone compatibility on Samsung's website.. it's basically the last few models of Samsung galaxy that it's compatible with.

The biggest difference is 2016= 2x15MP cameras vs 2017=2x8,4MP. That wins the older Version and is missing
How to grading the color (brightness/contrast/saturation)? Camera setting or with an application?

The thing about the older version is that it can easily be helmet mounted with a fly 360 threaded mount

LIFE in 360 the newer version can't or can it? I think it would be fairly cumbersome standing up that high off of a helmet. Still I am currious, can you screw some sort of mount into the second generation model?

as an action 360 camera the 2016 model is the better option! the 2017 model also has no gopro style mounts
I think you can mount either, since they both have a 1/4 inch tripod thread at the bottom.

Thanks for the review. I have a gear360 2017, using s10pus and galaxy tab s6 with Android 10 one UI 2.0. recently i can no longer access the gear card to transfer the photos directly to the s10pus. Samsung said that disabled this function for Android 10. This is a major disrespect to the consumer user. Do you recommend a third-party app to stitch stitch photos and videos together? I am not familiar with the V360 app, but I would just like to save the photos in the gallery together. Thank you.

+Dimas Videomaker given the lesser resolution, if you zoom in a bit it's going to show as soft. Try again in more controlled lighting and see if there's a difference 👍

Both of them are very worth it, and yes the Theta 4k is going to be awesome but it's probably still months away.

I hate it if they make stuff with unremovable battery , it limits you and obligates you to buy another camera if the battery dies. Sending it in to replace the battery would probably cost as much as buying a new camera.

+json405 thanks- honestly I'm not sure about that one.. it would be a lot of work to set it up every time and you'd need to host it privately through RUclips or elsewhere. My suggestion would be streaming through a non-360 camera that is better equipped for surveillance.

watch out for the other players then like ricoh theta and the 360 roundup cams. there's some lesser known companies which knock the socks of samsung for 360.

I got both for Christmas and each cost $75 the 2017 came by mistake I think when my son ordered the 2016 they sent the 2017. Tried to returnit but they won't answer emails ... tough luck for them.

Hi, I'm gonna buy one of those cams, but I'd want to use it with my Huawei Mate 8 (modded manager app). Maybe does the older one require a less powerful phone than the 2017 device? Or do they both require the same minimum hardware?

I'm late to this video but I have two questions, right now I'm considering the 2016 model because of price and sound so these questions are mainly for that camera. Do you know if I can edit the 360 video in adobe premiere elements 14? My second question is regarding battery life. How long does it last if it is continually recording in a room? Could I run it off of a power bank and have it record at the same time? Thank you
I haven’t used elements but t works in Premiere. It will record for up to an hour otherwise
The 2016 version's bluetooth cannot be discovered by iphone xs, which is a sad fact.

It depends on the camera you use, some do and some don’t. No tutorial needed, you just go into live streaming mode and start streaming

I'm having three problems with my 2017 unit:
1) It overheats, causing the recording to stop.
2) A long recording is split up into multiple MP4 files under 2GB each, even though the SD card was formatted in camera to exFAT.
3) The Mac desktop software does not install, complaining of incompatible VGA graphics card. My MacBook Pro has Intel HD 4000.
Any help with any of these problems?
+Douglas Shieh 1) are you shooting in a climate with a not-too-hot temperature, and using a fast (95mb/s+) micro SD card? 2) almost all video cameras divide really long clips up into shorter ones, which you can reconnect later in your editor. 3) if you have an older computer, which it sounds like you do, the graphics card won't be fast enough to handle 4k footage. Gotta have good hardware if you want to process high res video 👍

+Unique Photo and Video it doesn't record audio separately so it's joined to the .mp4 video file. And there is a wind filter which you can activate within the app for both, although without a proper windsock there's not a whole lot something like that can do.

Heya. The 2017 footage is very noisy for me, even outside in sunlight. I have the iso set to lowest at 400. I'm stitching via S8. When I view it in the Gear VR headset it's so flippin noisey. I know the pixels are getting stretched in a headset. But my clips seem way noisier than yours(and you've uploaded yours to YT too ha)
Any other tips? I have HDR on, but is that doing anything for video shooting.
I seem to remember 2016 footage being less noisey.

+Matt Oliver I know what you mean! Hmm.. will test this further. But for now I'd say play around with the exposure settings as much as you can to try and reduce it, including white balance, exposure compensation, HDR etc.
