I just finished watching the movie and, honestly, I didn't feel beaten over the head with any kind of environmental message from it. Yeah it was mentioned, but only maybe two times, and both times you could easily ascribe the character saying, "We should never have come down here," and saying how humans were never meant to be at those depths as talking to try and cope with how desperate and hopeless the situation is and how utterly frayed their nerves are. The movie had some problems, sure, but the whole "environmentalism over the head" complaint I just can't agree with.

Just saw it. The "message" or "preaching" is only like one or two lines. Also there is no real message since we really don't explore the ocean or take anything. Its more of a common trope. There are similar themes with Godzilla about nature, man, balance. Can't believe they complained about it so much.

    • @catcherboy96
      @catcherboy96 3 года назад +5

Also it’s literally Cthulhu. And drilling at the bottom of the ocean where he slumbers makes perfect sense. And even the message he’s complaining about makes sense.

DIgging too deep has long been a theme used. SInce ancient times, chthonic legends and horror tales have been around. THen came the theme in lord of the rings, and also in johnny quest where there was an under"SEA LAB" where either an earthquake or something happend as a result of an experiment, the seas floor cracked open, and ancient creatures that had been hibernating or loving isolated emerged and began eating the scientists. IT was the most BAS ASS johnny quest themed adventure I ever saw and I cant recall its name. Still...ITS BEEN DONE!

This movie is like Deep Star Six v Leviathan v Aliens. I'll agree that there were some mis-steps but I thought you guys were a little hard on the movie. I'd have given it a 6 or 7, since I didn't mind the decision that everything be super dark for a much longer portion of the movie. I also remembered the plan and never got confused as to where the characters were, so there's that.

Kirsten Stuart butch blonde feminist hairstyle with brown eyebrows is a poor stylistic decision imo. Why? Why is she saving a daddy long leg spider? There's the generic "nerd" that likes anime. There's a dumb stuffed rabbit.
Then the movie is turned upside down and I never began to care. Where's the story? I missed the whole bit with Mariana Trench deepest part of the ocean that fewer people have seen compared to the moon, and also the 300+ people on board, maybe because they flashed some lame imagery in the credits for the story.

Coming from Chris stuckmann's video, he said that since 20th century was acquired by Disney this was them dumping this project that was shot in 2017. I'm guessing that since they drop the ball at the end, they rushed it out to just be rid of it. It could have potentially been better when Disney acquired cause clearly fox wasn't happy with it, but they didn't want it either which is unfortunate

Alien, Leviathan, Thing, Sphere, Abyss, Life (2017), Event Horizon, Cloverfield, The Descent, As Above So Below, A Quiet Place, Annihilation.
The monster designs until the last 10 minutes are too generic to care, there was no story (could have discussed the Mariana Drench or whatever), plus the characters very bland with no backstory for icing on the cake. Even the Megalodon movie was better.

Can someone please explain how TJ Miller’s character dies? Is the creature pulling his leg off, or is it literally yanking his entire body through the leg connection in the suit? I just feel like the femur would just get torn off before it would be able to “rip him out of the suit” but I could be understanding it wrong.

This movie pissed me off! Everytime one of the characters ran into an alien they paused in shock for like 5 minutes which cost some of them their lives. And the dude that was passed out for half of the movie shouldve sacrificed his pod for kristen stewarts😤

It was realistic human nature. Have you never been scared stiff? How the hell would you react to something you knowingly cant outrun? And most people wouldn't give their lives to save someone else's. I liked that this movie created a sense of hopelessness, tired of movies portraying people power of the monsters who'd realistically have no power over them at all.

Dang, I really wanted this to be good too. I figured this was the closest thing yet to an actual Cthulu movie. I'm astonished that there are virtually no movie adaptations of the Cthulu myths and concepts with all the remakes and adaptations hollywood pumps out every year, I'm disappointed and astonished that they don't exist. I want an amazing, big budget adaptation of Lovecraft's work, especially the stuff about Cthulu. We almost had one by Del Toro but it got shot down by the studio.

Em's speech about "we shouldn't be here" was something I understood more like, literally...they should not have gone so deep into the earth, having discovered that there are scary things about to kill them xD but I guess I can understand some alternate ways to read into it, harkening back to high scool reading class lol metaphors, symbolism! "We took too much" is like encroaching on territory owned by Clthulu, and he was guna TAKE. IT. Back >:P Also, I watched this movie on youtube with subtitles xD so I could understand them all.

Plot heavy, not character driven. Some shots of hallways looked like Ripley Scott alien. But came up short and was in no way a masterpiece. Feels like it came out 10 years too late.

Prometheus had a trained biologist disrobe in an alien tomb to pet an alien snake which then breaks his arm, or something, I don't remember.
Alien had a blue collar driller look into an alien egg with his helmet on, which it then eats thru to throat rape him.
One is believable and one is insultingly stupid.

I don't mind movies that have messaging in them or some sort of deeper meaning, especially seeing as how most sci-fi films have some sort of message or theme that's a critique of modern day culture/politics. Just as long the story is well executed and everything else about it is good, films like "Starship Troopers," "Avatar", and "Sunshine" come to mind. Both Avatar and Starship Troopers were pretty damn heavy handed but they both fully committed and also executed everything else real well. Despite Avatar had a very well-worn plot, and yet because it was executed so damn well that it still managed to keep you emotionally invested. So im hoping that this wont bother me as much as it did you guys. I mean nothing can be both as heavy-handed as well as a complete failure on all other fronts the way "Terminator: Dark Fate" was, amiright!?

That seems to be the trend as of late. Not just the Political or woke messages, that has always been in entertainment in one for or the other, But the one-upping of Political and Woke crap being shoveled out. Each new movie seems to be a bigger billboard of "I'm so woke, and Righteous and. Blah, blah, blah." From the writers and directors or whatever, and the stories suffer.

Im afraid that if they make a 40k movie the space marines will have massive shoulder syndrome. Too often i see space marines with these STUPID BIG shoulder guards and it looks terrible. Give us a 40k movie that focuses on the imperial guard, has a few well done CGI SM's at the very end, and involves the horror of fighting chaos. It could be an action horror war movie thats grounded, gritty, and terrifying.

I don't think it was an environmentalist message, Joe. I think it was a reference to the opening of Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu. Later on, in the secret station that the Captain said was destroyed, in his belongings was a sketch of Cthulhu. The same one that Lovecraft made. This monster wasn't a Cthulhu lookalike. It literally was Cthulhu.
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

It kind of is. It's a Cthulhu/Dagon/Shub-Niggurath figure that they say is Cthulhu but there's a major detail missing; Cthulhu is telepathic so the characters in this movie would be about halfway to being as insane as the Event Horizon crew in _Event Horizon._

I know this movie came out in January but I just watched it, and to me that wasn't Cthulhu. I am a HUGE Lovecraft fan and to me Cthulhu was just shoe horned in there. The only way that we knew that it was Cthulhu was because the Director said it was. This is wrong. There was very little indication at all that this movie was in the Cthulhu Mythos. He explained that the name of the company was called Tian because 'LovecrafTIAN'. The there was a little picture of Cthulhu in a locker and that was it. No other references to the Mythos. Now, if they said anything about Arkham or if one of them was wearing a Miskotonic University shirt then yes I would believe that this was Cthulhu. But there wasn't and the director just said it was. I still liked the movie but IMO this was not Cthulhu.
