  • Blimey, a chatty face-to-camera video? What on earth could have come into me? 🤪 Seriously though, I wanted to chat about the value of joining a Patreon, membership of online course for those who don't have the option of attending in-person workshops and classes.
    I know that I have seen a huge improvement in my ability and confidence from attending live calls or on-demand replay sessions, and I can recommend it to others wanting to improve their art skills!
    Let me know what you think in the comments! 😘

    Hahaha Eve, the amount of times my tummy rumbles when filming is TOO many! Loved this face-to-face video, it is just like chatting to a friend! Definitely not making a fool of yourself, I think it’s a better way to get to know you and your personality 😊 And a huge thank you as always for your support for my Patreon 🥰

    Wonderful video - you are absolutely darling! 💗 Thank you for the inspiration, dear girl. At 61, after a very, long “serious” career in the defense industry, I am coming back to art, textiles, and gardening. My soul loves. Mostly, I’m just muddling, but would truly like to become more skilled. Love your advice and example. Thank you! 💗💗💗

    As ever Evie, you made me smile, ok, so maybe this one made me laugh, but I don’t do that as often as I should, so many thanks! I love seeing you face to face, although weirdly (cos I am weird), I always picture you anyway whilst looking at your hands and hearing your voice. Is that too weird? Even for me? Anyway…moving along. I am currently signed up to Anna Mason and Emily Olsen’s huge courses, broken down enough for even me to follow. I love detail, realistic botanicals, animals etc, with a good old dose of sudden paint splatters! To do that, I gave up 4 Patreon artists for the moment, but will go back with a little more of the basics under my belt, I hope! I love your content so much because of the utter joy you exude, yes…even whilst being shy to camera. Off to watch your colour pencil texture video now - you know I am always playing catch-up! 😁👍🏻😂👩🏻‍🎨🖌️🎨🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️❤️❤️❤️

And which Patreons were you enjoying before you signed up for the courses? I'm impressed that you enjoy botanicals and animals - I find the amount of detail challenging, then I get frustrated and stop. More so with botanicals. 🤣 Big hugs - and thank you as always for popping by, watching and commenting. 😘❤️🎨

    I started Draw Brighton a little over a 1 year ago. I go to all of their sessions (5perweek) regularly and I have improved SO much in that time. It's incredible the difference. When I started I got nothing recognisable down in 1 min. and now I get the entire figure/pose with correct proportion down. It is wonderful. I am also a lot less scared to Experiment with my work since I am confident I can reproduce the same work very quickly to the same Standart to start over if I mess up. Highly recommend it to anyone! Plus the community is extremely nice🥰

    • @eviedivadoodles
      @eviedivadoodles  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes to this Fiona! I haven't been brave enough to join the draw Brighton ones live yet - but I regularly watch the replay, and draw from them, which has helped. I think I should get my brain out of the idea of having to 'draw' on those sessions. I could (and should) use a mix media approach, cos the thought of just using graphite on the session fills me with dread. And that's my own thinking, that it NEEDS to be graphite... Silly I know! 👀 😘

      Such a kind comment, thank you Barbi! My favorites in order would be:

      2. Sarah Dyer
      3. Natasha Newton
      4. Sarah van Dongen
      5. Draw Brighton
      The order isn't based upon 'quality' but how much I am learning from each at the present time! 😘
      Additional Patreons that I have been in or plan to join are:
      1. TJ Marston (was in, but her lives are not generally good time for me)
      2. Emma Carlisle (I think I'd learn a lot from her, but limiting myself to 5 at a time)
      3. Art with Em (I wan't to see her collage process in the future).

    Great advice about Patreon and it was great watching another real human being, not all polished like an actor saying memorized lines.
    I have two issues regarding Patreon. I am seriously considering joining Katie Moody’s Patreon because I love her style. I also love her idea of spending a month in line, then a month on texture. I do watch her videos on RUclips.
    But because she is in England I’m not sure the lives in Patreon would be at a convent time for me here at Pacific Time. And then I would just be watching the recordings and that does not have the same accountability. Unless I just pick a time and say “I must watch and follow the recording at such and such a time each month.”
    My other issue is when I do a session of one of the recorded online classes I have purchased, I usually watch the whole thing and then do my art afterwards. I would like to start creating along because I think in that way you stop copying exactly what the artist is doing but more start your interpretation of what the artist is doing. So you start to find your own style.
    And if there are times exercises, and I’m just watching a recording, I let myself cheat lol so I am not really getting faster.
    I did take a in person class in figure drawing at my local college. I got so that I could draw a decent representation of the model if we had 15 to 20 minutes per pose. But my 5 minute poses are still rubbish lol. In the in person class ai could not cheat and give myself extra time so I improved in speed.

      Hey Sandra! I feel like there's another comment you made about sketchbooks that is floating around unanswered, I'll have to track that one down too! 👀
      Anyhow, Katie's is brilliant. Over the months I've been the times of her live sessions have varied from 10am UK time to 6pm UK time, so I think she does change them up to make sure people around the world can attend every other one. Another benefit that you may find helpful with hers is that she has several cameras set up: one of the reference images, the other of her sketchbook. And you can 'pin' both so you can see at once the image and how Katie is tackling it, but you're only glancing up and 'seeing', not actually 'working from' her work. I find it very helpful. 😎
      I am with you on timed exercises in recordings though. One draw Brighton pose was 30 minutes, and I just paused is with the model in the pose and continued drawing. 🤣 I think that's ok, as long as we're actually enjoying the process.
      I'd love to do some in-person classes too. There's nothing here suitable in the town I live in, and going to Amsterdam is 2.5hrs each way and €60 return. Ouch. 😭

    No u didn’t make a fool of yourself! It was lovely to see your face like u said to me! You’re adorable 😘. You’ll get used to it. Just think of it as talking to your friend on FaceTime. I think it’s taking the time to actively use video resources as learning tools not just passively watching that will help u improve. And the patreons make u do that as you’re paying for them and don’t want to waste your money. I’ve had to stop my RUclips for a bit as I killed my (ancient) computer editing a vid rofl

      Ah thanks Julianne! Just being a lemon really aren't I? 🤣
      Oh no, that's rubbish re the computer Julianne! I can't edit video on my laptop, it just cannot handle it (it's also quite ancient) which is why I only have videos when I'm not travelling, impossible otherwise! 😘

    Eve, that was a lovely time. I felt like we were having a conversation, only you couldn’t hear me 😂. I was going to ask you about Sarah von D(I can’t remember how to spell the rest of her name)’s course on Domestika as I keep getting ads for it and I remembered that you have mentioned her patreon and that you went to a day with her. I have empty sketchbooks just waiting for more work and was wondering if her course would be something I would like. Also, those 2 new neocolour IIs will be in my mailbox shortly. I showed a friend yesterday how I spray painted the other tin red and he was all like “you didn’t do all that” and I was all like “um, do you know me at all?”

      Ok, I'm back! Her exploratory sketchbooks course is the one I did, and I enjoyed it. She used gouache, markers and pencil, and it's nice to see her create an entire scene. If you have the cash to spare, and like to follow along (with your own image idea) then it's probably worthwhile doing. I enjoy her Patreon and her in-person workshop because although the info is in my brain, she says things in a way that make it click. Anyhow, hope that's helpful! 😘

      @eviedivadoodles  8 месяцев назад

      Hi JoJo! Yes, that is the class I took which introduced me to Sarah Van D! If you're used to sketch booking, it may be a bit too basic for you. She does go through using a few supplies in different layers, and creats a 'scene' in her sketchbook as you work through the course. It's nice because she isn't precious about her sketchbook, and it definitely helped me to move into using one rather than sheets of paper I would just throw away! I actually rewatched some of it yesterday (as a YT friend and asked me about it too) and I really liked her steady way of explaining and doing. Didn't make me feel 'talked down to' if you know what I mean?
