Hey guys, if you want to know about the accident and see me at my most vulnerable moment, you can check out this video here. ruclips.net/video/9p3Ras6tsDk/видео.html
you may want to check the shift rod bushing in the tunnel just behind the shifter as well. I can almost promise you it is wasted. It supports the rod and allows the shifter side to side action.
Great comment; was just going to say that. That plastic bushing behind the shifter gets neglected more than any other part in these cars. I’ve seen my share of disintegrated ones where only the metal clip remains.
As an old mechanic, ditch the watch. All those nooks and crannies are like reservoirs for grease. Days later, you find little spots of it on things and your hands. As an old Bug nut, you can get home by having someone sit in the back with a set of vice grips locked onto that square screw and shifting the car while you drive. Bugs bring good memories and bad. I pretty much grew up in the things.
Great job on the mechanical work....I know you are learning as you go...but its very hard to beat having a VW to learn mechanic skills on as they are pretty simple....so happy to see you again working on your projects it does my heart good.....thank you and pleas keep up the good work ❤❤❤
drove the bug an off white bug for years in california s fwy driving rains 405 the 5 santa ana fwy, coast hwy, to san diego, along the coast, the tires always held the road cutting thtough driving rain, all glass remained clear w the furnace of a heater in it,, year old shiny oldsmobiles buicks cadillacs often in the emergency lanes hood up inside of the car all steamed up,,they could not stop water from soaking all electrics,,the dub is higher off the ground, did 85 MPH all day,,what a car,I did have one and 2 of the 4 cylinders crap out in hill climbing in laguna bch hills,I looked at the distributor cables feeding the cylinders,,the clips inside the wires came loose under high revs in low gear,,cost 11 bucks for new cables,,that solved it the bug is a great machine yours is in such great condition
Nice bug I had a 61 back in the day I loved it it had nothing not even a gas gauge no radio no heater no carpet that's the way it was I paid $150 for it I did a brake job rebuilt a carburetor and gave it a tune-up I loved it it was awesome the only dumb thing was I sold it that was dumb well that was back in 1980 have a great day I love old bugs I'm a retired mechanic now they're so expensive they're out of my reach but oh well I had fun my buddy's got a 59 it's real nice he won't get rid of it no matter what and he's older than me he's 84 he still drives it
I know 😅 like most jobs on a Volkswagen, it looks easy until you get down to it...then it's a pain in the ass leaving you wondering why you love doing these things 🤣
FWIW, several family members of mine worked primarily on VWs, with one in particular owning a service station and being officially licensed back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. A "simple" fix turning into a mad dash of wrenching long after the sun set was a regular occurrence, even with all the knowledge and special tools. A lot of television shows about "fixing" cars are just that; television shows. Keep on going Ash 👍
"An old German standard called (Gudenteit)". That gave me belly laughs! I've owned 4 aircooled Veedubs, and have yet to hear that one. Well played, (claps hands thusly).
...I know I'm not the first to say it, but good job, really. You have good common sense and excellence problem solving skills and patience. That's a pain in the ass job and you did it properly with ease! I personally swear a lot more than you did doing that same job😅
Proud of you fixing it to go into reserve good job well done girl two thums up 👍👍 you have a beautiful vw take care of it you look cool it your car take care mark from dixon new Mexico US 😎
The problem is you had a Lexus Kit behind the read seat. I was gonna say won't go in reverse you need lube, lol! Although the grease seems icky, remember it is not a biohazard like cleaning a toilet, lol! Great job! You are a great driver too!
I admire people with the patience and skills to do stuff like this. When I try simple jobs and run into problems I invent new swear words. 😂 Great job! And you got no grease on your white seats. VERY impressive!
When I did it the main trouble was dropping things into the tunnel and having to fish them out with a magnet. Good work. David at CB performance says to make it vw tight, not Chevy tight.
You should invest in the new Empi solid aluminum one that's available nowadays. You might want to check the front bushing as well. Delrin makes a solid one of those. Both pricey but they say they'll last longer than the vehicle.
If there is too much play in your shifter you may need to replace the bushing on the shift rod which is in 🎉the tunnel just to the rear of your shifter. It would require you to remove the shift rod to replace this bushing.
Some time in the VW I had, the shift fork would bend, when I tried the speed shift, and I would have to pull the front cover from the transmission, and fix the fork, and in your case it is the bushing, thanks BigAl California
You need a partner in crime!! I was workin' on bugs at the age of 12 and had my factory certifications from VW when I was 17. Yours looks worth saving... 😊
The black is better mostly because the sounds from the trany travels thru the red stuff more then the black stuff , and in the car for you to listen to 😊,
I believe you can also find just the rubber pads and still keep the OEM metal coupler; better than any replacements you can get nowadays. The plastic bushing behind the shifter is probably shot also; this is the most neglected part on these cars; have seen my share of disintegrated ones with only the metal clip remaining.
You probably can, but as I have seen first hand on other parts (gas cap), the rubber seal you need may actually cost more for a replacement piece than the entire assembly 🤦♀️ we live in such a throwaway culture nowadays. I found on Amazon a brand new gas cap (with a new rubber seal on it) for $10, but I only needed the seal so I searched around for that a bit more and found just the seal for $15 😒 make it make sense! Lol
I changed that bushing in my beetle when it was like 100 degrees outside and it was not fun, did that plus the shifter bushing and put in a empi shifter lol. Still have yet to really drive it bc everytime I fix something, another major issue comes up 😭
@Yee_Yee I totally understand derstand that 😅 mine seem to do the same! They don't want me to start another project when they want my attention too 😒 😂
In all my years I have never seen that coupling go bad, and I started working on bugs around 1970. OTOH, they were newer back then so anything is possible with age. I'd be curious about that slime being gear oil (smells bad and rots rubber) and that trans needing a front seal change.
I love it! We all make our fix estimates before sunset no matter how early we start our bug project to then finish unplugging the light as we put away our tools 😂. Great choice on keeping the original coupler cage. VW OG much better. If you would have cleaned that cage, you would have uncovered the VW logo stamp on it. By the way, did you wrap the safty wire around the coupler to keep it from working itself out? It wasn't shown if you did or not 😬
@georgecurious5103 yes I did 👍 had trouble finding an angle that showed what I was doing and forgot to video a clip of what it looked like in the end up close
I've heard it's a design flaw. Purchased a 1972 VW bug from a guy who's been restoring them for years and he says he always has to deal with the reverse.
You might going to want a new VW once you see the new 2025 models. A sneak peek review reveals a VW truck that's right German manufacturer thought of a VW design in a truck version. 😯
@EmmettBattiste other Baja is on someone's property being stored, not sure if I'll ever get back to it considering everything I have here taking up my time, that one is on the backburner for now. The other red one is in the driveway, you may be able to catch a glimpse of it in the video. It's just sitting in the same condition it was a couple years ago, waiting patiently for me to fix my current running vehicles so I can start tearing into her and fixing her up. Hard to justify starting another project when I'm just learning everything myself for the first time and trying to keep my driveable vehicles still driveable 😅 but eventually the Tangerine Dream will get moving as well. I'm hoping to get my cousin interested in the vws and gift it to him after we get her up and running! 🏃♀️🙏
@@dustbuggy Thank you much for reaching back out to subscribers, you're a heck of a resilient woman , and what a great idea for a gift, will be looking for videos for that and others to come! Thanks Ashlynn.

Possibly the bushing by the shifter on the shaft, and maybe the reverse lockout plate, which you mentioned, it'd start with the bushing. Great job!
15:59 who doesn’t like gooten tight.
I have been using that German standard Torque for over 40 years. Never fails on me.
Isn't that the same as forward movement when the starter goes bad or the battery is dead!

Great job on the shift coupler!! 😀 Awesome driving on the Dust buggy! Looks pretty badass power sliding!!!
Been working on VWs for 50 years. Love em
That's awesome! They're truly special cars! 😎

Don’t be afraid to spray some brake clean. It’s a quality of life for working on older vehicles.
Nicely done, I would have test driven it before buttoning it up. Nothing worse than having to tear everything back apart for something overlooked.
Nicely done! I had a feeling the shift linkage bushings were shot. You can also use a 12 point socket to remove square head fasteners.

Love it you can fix it... I'm not qualified ....... Very very proud of you!!!!!!!! Have Fun
I love your video, I hope I see more of your VW showing the seats and you sitting on it👍👍and I subscribed
Awesome fix. Looks like a nice vw. Probably heard this already, put rubber under the fuel pump. Makes it alot quieter. 👍

Love seeing you work on your car, could you possibly buy a phone tripod to make it stationary, the constant moving made me slightly sea sick.
Had few VWs ...80s 66 square back 63 vw ..64 notch back ...scirroco ss 2..German made 😂😂😂😂
the most crucial moment you did'nt film , showing how to get this thing out and popped in , wordthless video

I wish I had mechanical skills every time my daily driver needs service I have to take it to my mechanic also what rims do you have on your car
Centerline rims 👍
At 16:46 where did you get the mat from i would like to have one for my beetle as well. Great video btw :D
From Amazon! They have all different sizes and thicknesses to choose from 👌 I just found something that worked for me
Should have used a good cotter pin instead of wire.
Thanks for the vertigo
Sorry! I'll try to keep it more still next time, it can be difficult while juggling everything 😅
linkage need adjusting...is my guess...
Does the French version only go in reverse?
mine gets stuck in reverse from time to time and its finicky to get it out
Might be the synchros getting worn, able to get it in and then it adjusts slightly from the wear and makes getting it out of reverse hard

Dont buy the upgraded urethane coupling things that suck, the o.g. rubber had the right amount of give that works better.
