You definitely have good taste there Sir, I’ve been hunting for CRX’s for a while now then just gave up and bought a 07 GD3 Fit Manual also thanks to Fenton’s ZCT Episode.
It’s kinda crazy that Toyota and Subaru built the new 86/BRZ into a modern Nissan Silvia 240SX S13/14/15. While also looking like an angular/robot Porsche Cayman. The Nissan Silvia S12 even looked like a Toyota Corolla AE86 back then.
Great video Fenton. I think a lot of haters of this 86/BRZ platform misunderstand into thinking that those twins 'should be turbocharged' like the MK4 Supra or a Nissan S15 Silvia Spec R. They should see what made the original AE86 so appealing first. Which was why I thought it was nice that Matt let you use his car for this review - it provides context to why the GR86 has a naturally aspirated 4 cyl engine in a relatively lightweight body, like the AE86 👍

I had a stock AE-86. Best car I ever had. Flicked through corners like a breeze. May have only had 112 HP, but at 133 MPH I had more to go. I backed off because the front end was lifting. 19 years of driving joy, to 260,000 miles, with 1 repair. The rest was brakes and shocks. I did have the Limited Slip. It's replacement is a 2005 Scion tC. Nice, but not the same. I also have an '88 Supra non-turbo, and an '85 Celica GT-S. But the AE-86 was my pet. It was stolen, dropped when they took the wheels off, and developed a crack that started at the firewall, and worked back through the car over time. I could have bought a new floor pan. I miss that car so much.
Just ordered my GR86 last week! In Neptune blue! Can't wait haha! Got a bunch of handling mods in my head now... I think I may change to an OS Giken diff and a set of 235/18 Advan AD09 tires (Yokohama said they are coming to North America later this year. Hopefully that's true) as my 1st mods.
I was lucky enough to be able to get a 2022 brz in late December for msrp and honestly this car has surpassed my expectations. I was not expecting it to be as fun as it is and I’m so happy I picked this over a civic si which would of been my other option
Imo, the ft86/gr86 aren't the ae86, bc it's not an economy grocery getter at base. it's a purpose built affordable sporty car. There will never be another ae86, bc there no longer are any RWD economy cars. The closest thing to a new ae86 would probably be gr yaris. AWD instead of RWD, but it's based on an econo car and race modified. Unfortunately we won't be getting it in the US.
another great video, good comparisons, evoking history and purpose, connecting it to present. As a 2022 BRZ owner, I'm interested in your GR86/BRZ comparisons, track or street. I suspect, stock for stock, the BRZ is faster on track, can't wait to hear your impressions.

The sound of that AE86 was indeed glorious, but so too were the car's thin A-pillars. By comparison, those in the GR86 come across like a kid stuck in a continuous loop at the Taco Bell drive thru who was forced to eat something with each pass while the fake sound simply is what it is. Though today's A-pillars are the result of safety regulations, fake engine sounds can likely only be chalked up to cars being designed by and for the gaming generation. (I'd keep the AE86 were it mine.)
Should keep this AE86! I'm not too sure a car like this will hold its financial value but it definitely does hold its sentimental value! If one got the money to buy a brand new car, then it should be easy. Getting a legendary 2nd car, that should be a lot harder.
I honestly think best sub 40k drivers car is selling it short. I cant think of anything $50k that drives as well as it does. Im not a Porsche guy but i’d probably only have a hard choice if offered a Cayman
Love your videos. Imagine if someone offered an ITB package for the FA24...I believe a JDM tuning company called 'SARD' offers ITBs for the older FA20 engine. Individual throttle bodies would instantly make any 4 cylinder sound brilliant ❤
correction, the AE86 sprinter/corolla is not an economy car, its a sports compact. The economy car one with the same chassis is the AE85 or the USDM SR5 since both have the 3AU and 4AC single cam. The AE86 are actually used in Group A and Group N, Rallying and Touring Car races, it even beat Holden Comodores, V8 Rovers, Volvos, Mercedes, BMWs and Fords in those races. The AE86 has alot of racing history before Initial D and drifting and people never knew about it
What does it mean to be a Toyota Corolla AE86? a cheap affordable car that is fun, unassuming, and reliable enough to last 30+ years. The Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ is more comparable in price, ethos, and market niche to a modern Nissan S14 240SX Silvia. So, no, the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ probably don’t fit into every category, but that’s to be expected, the 1980’s RWD Corollas are very different from 2022’s FWD Corollas. The AE86 was much cheaper than the Nissan S14 and S13. The new GR86/BRZ are much cheaper than the Nissan 370Z, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and new 400Z, and adjusted for inflation the Honda S2000 and BMW Z3 too. Matching the Mazda Miata MX5 (the price of which can climb to over $40,000). But the $30,000 GR86/BRZ is not $25,000 “fast Corolla” cheap. The closest thing to a fast affordable Corolla from the 1990’s to 2020 was the Corolla XRS and Honda Civic Si: both cars known for great engines, affordable speed, and Reliability. The 2000’s Toyota Celica, Acura Integra, Scion tC, and Acura RSX also share the AE86 form factor of a affordable two door liftback hatch.
The only thing keeping me away from the new 86 is the boxer engine. If they'd drop it and put in an inline 4 like my Quad 4, I'd put $10k down right now.
Which would you recommend between the BRZ and GR86 to someone who is new to driving stick and has never owned a RWD car? I like the Toyota history a bit more (plus the dealer experience is usually top notch), but the BRZ in WRB is also great. When I read that the GR86 is a bit more playful in the turns, it makes me think the BRZ might be better for someone new to RWD lightweight cars. Is that accurate or is the GR86 just as good for beginners with regards to handling and not losing control of the car? Looking at the top trim of both, but I’ll be replacing the tires with Pilot Sport all seasons due to the cold winters here.
If you keep stability and traction control on, you really shouldn't be losing control in either car given the power levels. Just pick the one that you like the look of better, you can always tune the suspension to equalize the handling. Sauce: always drove rwd or rwd-oriented AWD cars since getting my license
@PeterPangea is right - just get the one you prefer. Both cars are beginner friendly. The subtle differences in handling only become apparent when pushing to the limit.
Id venture to say thats a tired engine. My stock blacktop made 135~ whp on a dynojet. Of course thatll vary a bit depending on altitude, specific dyno and type, etc.
I can't help but feel this review, much like EVERY review I've seen, that compares the AE86 and the GR86 falls for the same pitfall, of acknowledging the AE86 being more than just an econobox Corolla, but then completely forgetting that IT IS IN FACT, STILL also an econobox Corolla. Yes it has great driving dynamics and feel, BUT IT IS a Corolla. For all it's fun it is still an econobox that does everything all econoboxes do as well. Which is PART of it's appeal that gets forgotten pretty much always. The reason the AE86 truly became popular was because it was fun but still cheap and practical econobox that you can daily constantly and still enjoy it a bit. It WASN'T a sports car, it was a SPORTY trim of an econobox. It's why to me Toyota and Subaru missed the mark and shouldn't have used the 86 for the car. As far as the car it self, it's lovely. BUT IT ISN'T A SPORTY ECONOBOX, so it's NOT an 86 to me. Regardless of how many enthusiasts wish it to be.
@@Treaxvour ok, first off, mpg is a meaningless shit measurement because it doesn't ACTUALLY tell you anything about how much fuel your car is really using, it's why a 5L V8 can have the same MPG as a 2.4 liter inline 6, to spite the fact that the there is no fucking WAY that the two are using the same amount of fuel over the same distance. So I don't give a shit about it's MPG. Tell me it's fuel consumption over 100km with both economic and aggressive driving. Now THAT is a meaningful measurement. And if you told me that the fuel consumption of the two cars was identical using THAT measurement. I'd call you full of shit, because even the biggest engine currently available in a Corolla or Camry is a 2.0, and unless you're running the GR's 2.4 SUPER LEAN or the Corolla's 2.0 rich to the point it fails emissions, NO WAY can they have the same fuel consumption.
Great video, but that AE86 is a 1986: not a 1985. The color, the rear lights and the smaller door decals dictates that......unless it's been updated. By the way, this has to be the best comparisons I've seen of these two cars
FYI Hachiroku it self means Eight Six, saying Hachi Juu Roku(八十六, means Eighty Six) is too complicated Some people strats to called Hachi Roku(八六, means Eight Six)
Umm....just because something dynos at 110bhp doesn't mean 165 crank is an overstatement. You should probably learn a bit about relative dyno comparisons and also Japanese fuel standards.
I hate to say it, but I feel the GR86 is nostalgia bait. Even the commercial... Hopefully I don't eat my words. Is it a new classic, idk. The engine is like hmm... The body is like errr... nothing about reminds me of the AE86. The Nissan 400Z on the other hand, you definitely see it came from it's grand pappy the Datsun Zs... my 2 cents
@@MaddNomad1015 agreed! What made the AE86 also a great car, was it was an unexpected juggernaut, like the old honda civics. Something dinky that somehow became a dinosaur. Initial D said it all. Lol. I could rant all day long about it. It's not even a corolla... if they change the corolla body style and made it a FR, I would respect it more. But it's just a brz with an 86 sticker on it.
@@soniccthehedgehog I mean in reality the new GR Corolla is technically the successor as it is a E210 chassis. Now it’s coming out it makes the 86 look more like a nostalgic cash grab.
The fake engine sound "issue" is way overblown in my opinion. I get that people don't like it, which is fine, but unless you're tracking it, who drives around in complete silence all day? With the stereo on, ambient road noise, a passenger in the car, etc. I never even notice it.
That blacktop was rated at 165hp. I put one in my MKI MR2 many years ago. The answer to your title though is No. The soob is a nice car but its no AE86 - I road raced one for 25 years

I would love to drive an AE92. I rarely seen them on the roads nowadays, especially in the coveted coupe body style.
The subtitles for the engines sound was "music"
It even got that notorious whistle those suberu 2.5L engines would make at higher revs lol.
Plenum not Pleenum bro
I mean to start off it’s a Corolla.
I agree if anything the GR Corolla reintroduces the performance Corolla line anyways. Chassis is also a E210
Matt would be a fool to sell such a clean AE86
Matt Keep it forever if at all feasible!
The only thing keeping me away from the new 86 is the boxer engine. If they'd drop it and put in an inline 4 like my Quad 4, I'd put $10k down right now.
The million dollar question : which would you rather drive on a perfect windy road?
If Matt's AE86 had proper suspension, a close ratio gearbox, and lower grip tires, probably that
How about a track review of a 2004 - 2005 Mazdaspeed miata mx5.
Would love to hear feedback from an experienced track driver
If the new 86 was pure Toyota then it will deserve the name and it will be legendary
curious, why does it actually make 240-250 but toyota/subaru downplay it to jsut 228?
Not sure, but BMW is known to do this to an even greater extent with their turbo engines. Maybe under-promise, over-deliver?
Ahhhh, the coveted Zygrene acceleration giggle 0:17
Teeheehee
Do you realize that the gr86 has the exact same mpg as the new corolla and camry? How much more economical do you want it to be?
Spot on. True successor is the GR Corolla
@@MaddNomad1015 we'll see. But it looks promising.
Great video, but that AE86 is a 1986: not a 1985. The color, the rear lights and the smaller door decals dictates that......unless it's been updated. By the way, this has to be the best comparisons I've seen of these two cars
The only problem I have with the gr86 is the fact that it’s not a inline 4
FYI Hachiroku it self means Eight Six, saying Hachi Juu Roku(八十六, means Eighty Six) is too complicated
Some people strats to called Hachi Roku(八六, means Eight Six)
i have a 2022 brz and ngl i wish it had the oversteer tendency of the toyota version
Mat need to keep his AE86
Bro pls keep it this the one car that is so great I don’t mind not having a chance to own it
Why does Matt want to sell the AE86?
He wants a single, modern car for track/daily and prefers FWD/AWD
@@Zygrene sell it to me…what is the price
@@Zygrene price?
Umm....just because something dynos at 110bhp doesn't mean 165 crank is an overstatement. You should probably learn a bit about relative dyno comparisons and also Japanese fuel standards.
Former club4ag member here, what price is Matt looking to sell?
Not sure, but if he does decide to sell it I'll make a video sharing the details
I hate to say it, but I feel the GR86 is nostalgia bait. Even the commercial... Hopefully I don't eat my words. Is it a new classic, idk. The engine is like hmm... The body is like errr... nothing about reminds me of the AE86. The Nissan 400Z on the other hand, you definitely see it came from it's grand pappy the Datsun Zs... my 2 cents
Couple people on here agree as well. Some of the allure of the AE86 was the engine and the fact it was a simple hot hatch.
Matt should keep the car. It's a beautiful car.
The soob is a nice car but its no AE86 - I road raced one for 25 years
Keep it!!! AE86 GTS can go for 10k+
i keep hearing people say fake engine sound and not fake engine sound on this car which is it seems like every other video says something different about it
Nice Review! Does the GR86 feel more tail happy than the BRZ. Ive heard the BRZ is more stable for daily drive. Whats your take on that. Thank you! @Zygrene
i say no strictly because its a flat 4
Keep it forever. Because that is the car you wanna drive off into the sunset
Don’t sell it Matt! I’d put on some JDM bumpers, better seats, better suspension, shorter diff, and enjoy it! RWD for life!
I need to test drive a GR 86, I personally love a tail happy car. Great driving impression comparison breakdown man. I wish they made these cars with a hatch style rear opening instead of a trunk, it would make it more practical & usable.
I prefer the Corolla GT-S, also want to say I live in the Bay area too!
What would the AE86 cost when it was new in today’s dollars?
Around $27,500 to $30,000
It needs a better ECU and tune..should be around 150hp.
The AE86 sounds like an s2000. I like it =) Too bad the subaru engine doesn't sound like that in the GR86. I still pick the GR86 over the Ae86 because I already have the s2000. both are great cars just different era and sound.
Matt.....keep it bro you will instanly regret it. Trust me
