Mufasa in this clip is Samuel E. Wright, the original Mufasa for The Lion King show. He was nominated for a Best Male Actor Tony Award in 1998 for this role. Off Broadway he is probably best known for being the voice of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid.
Isn't the original Mufasa voice done by James Earl Jones? I stand to be corrected but I guess Samuel E. Wright voices Sebastian the crab in The Little Mermaid.
Jason Raize leaves me speechless everytime I watch this video. It's incredible, it's absolutely amazing how he projects his voice, it's amazing indeed. R.I.P. Jason, we miss you!
The one who filmed this and then kept it all those years is a true hero. This is seriously what I live on. Wish I could've seen the original cast, especially Jason. I never got to meet him, but I truly honor his work and he inspires me probably every day of my life.
Wow . i really got so touched by the way Jason really captures the essence of his character very very well. Like everyone else i wish he never took suicide in the first place. he is special in many good ways. may his soul finaly rest in peace
Rest in Peace Samuel E Wright You are always greatly missed and appreciated for everything you did. Your portrayal of King Mufasa was phenomenal. God bless you and Jason Raize
Mr. Wright passed away in the last year; what a loss. His Mufasa was so perfect; it illuminated his beautiful heart, showcased his enormous talent and a voice that sends chills down one's spine in the most beautiful of ways. Sure, I remember Sebastian, but it's his Mufasa that still touches my soul.
Samuel Wright's craft uplifted the hearts of both the young and old. His role in the little mermaid as sebastion remains one of my favorite voice acting performances of any performer (only second to Robin Williams). As a child I would watch the little mermaid in the same way my daughters watch frozen, completely in rapture by it and with entirely too much frequency. This is my favorite of Sam Wright's performances. May his performances and art live on for generations. Rest in Peace Samuel Wright.
I’m back watching again!!!! I now work for a crisis line trying to help people who are thinking about suicide! I wish you were one of them Jason! But you will forever live on by your beautiful art that you shared with us! Thank you!
I love this song soo much : 3 . I was lucky enough to see the Jason Raize and the original cast in its hay day . RIP Jason you are very talent singer .
I saw this show live when I was in high school! Ever since then I can't help but to compare live plays to it, this show inspired me to get into theatre and I hope to someday write, produce and direct something this memorable.
I've seen this live show 4 times...including my first show with the Original cast back in 2002.and 4 times is still not enough. I most recently took my wife this past December to San Antonio to see it, her first time, and man, it's still Hands down the best of all time. This scene in particular, chills, every time.
Saw this live.... can't express the magic you feel in this scene. The background singing makes it sound like the voices and music is literally swirling and moving across the stage. No idea how they do it, but it is stunning.
Amazing production...just awesome. There's many different versions, but this one I like the best. Vocals, acting...and the whole mood is so convincing. Kudos to the percussionists back there!
I feel like Nick Afoa who I've seen play Simba in the West End takes a lot of inspiration from Jason Raize. Both incredible Simbas. So sad Jason is no longer here.
Oh yes, the stage setup for the "He Lives in You" scene just sends chills down your spine, especially when the ghost mask of Mufasa appears, OMG. And the part after Simba decides to return is awesome too, upbeat and uplifting. He Lives in You (reprise) is my favorite scene of the show, even more so than Circle of Life, and many other fans feel the same way. I hope you get to see the show yourself someday!
Yeah, it shocked me too, that Jason was not nominated at all. He didn't just play Simba. He WAS Simba. No one can play the role like him. Such a great talent and such and incredible voice. He should have been nominated.
I could listen to the segment from 3:05 to 3:14 on loop forever. The power with which Jason Raize delivers is incredible. Unfortunately, I watched this on Broadway well after his passing and didn't get to experience his stage presence/talent first hand. It's a shame there was so much turmoil in his life. R.I.P.
That is the most amazing voice ive heard. soo much energy and meaning into it its unbelievable , one day i hope i'm able to see Lion king seen everyone and its still my favoirite movie after 10yeaars
This has got to be my favorite rendition of these songs. Samuel’s added growls after “you” and “me”. Jason’s powerful voice Wowie! What an incredible first cast. RIP to both, thank you for sharing your talent with us. 🥲
omg!! this is so sad to see Jason Raize! i miss him! the world lost such a talent. i saw this on broadway earlier this year. it was amazingg beyond words.
"He lives in you and he lives in me" Ive seen this video several times and have been blown away by the amazing gift jason has to bring people to tears with his amazing voice. Now tears are there for a different reason. They say math is the universal language... i say its music. If you have seen Jason perform, he touches your soul. Like someone said in the other post.. He is singing for the angels!
The woman is Tsidii Le Loka, the original Rafiki for The Lion King on Broadway. She was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a musical at the 1998 Tony Awards for this role and she has her own web site too - just Google her name to find it. She really was something special, as Jason Raize and all the original cast members were.
I saw the Lion KIng when it very first came to Broadway. There was high expectations as the "buzz" about the show was considerable. The best way I can put it...is that the show and performance of it ignited the audience. I have seen much in my day but the first time (out of 3) that I saw Lion King was almost not to be believed. Jason and Heather performed beyond by capacity to describe. I was so sorry to hear about his passing.
i love Samuel Wright(aka Sebastian from Little Mermaid)and all the women who play Rafiki can sing RIP Jason you were a great talent that died to young. God bless his family and thx to you for posting this vid.
This is so amazing it brings me to tears! I wish I would have been able to see this remarkable show during it's original production. Unfortunately at that time my family couldn't afford tickets to this so I never got to see it.
This was fantastic. I cant imagine how they mustve felt after a performance, knowing they just took place in one of the best shows on broadway :) I hope I get to see this in person.
Hanged aged 28 whilst visiting friends in Australia - Jason Raize is the older Simba (comes in at 2:15). He also provided the voice for Denahi in Brother Bear, as well as being a UN Environment Program ambassador.
This musical Lion King became the best moments of my life that I saw this on Broadway. It was the most epic experience with me that I loved with the costumes and puppets and culture
Every time I watch this video and hear Jason Raize's voice, I feel completely uplifted. His voice was magnificent.
***** I wish someone would build a time machine so I can go see the original production of The Lion King
