@@IFKY Nice! Yeah I actually caught him one time in Seattle, the night before Jane's started their tour in 2002 my friend's friend was a bartender who was told he'd be jumping in with a zeppelin cover band. Sure enough, he did for 3 ripping songs. Asked for his autograph afterwards on the street- tiny little dude, but he sure hits HARD and was so gracious & friendly.
Thanks for featuring the great Stephen Perkins! Great dude, great drummer. Bummer that I won't get to see them live given what has transpired in recent weeks.
Great interview. Glad they played the pre-interview... fascinating information. Edit: Love the interaction between these two gentlemen. First rate interview on every level.
This is fantastic as I was at the infamous Boston Show (Stephan's B'Day) so we missed out on Stop! that night, this kinda made up for it. Such a shame it went down as it did as Stephen and the band sounded so damn good until the vocals fell apart. I'll never forget the look on his face as he descended from the riser after the fracas, total disbelief; and he had an ear to ear grin all night up until then. Ted was certainly the highlight of the night and this bird's eye view is killer.
I've only had the privilege of seeing Mr. Perkins live once in San Antonio (1991)when he was with Infectious Grooves. Always one of my favorites and as a young newbie he was who inspired me to experiment with new sounds and patterns breaking away from conventional rock drumming. I told the friends I was with that I'd love to meet him and just say "thanks." After the show we were hanging around and Mike Muir came out and was talking to fans. My friends girlfriend walked over and had no trouble getting him to chat, cute little goth girl that she was. We saw him scowl as she walked away. I asked her "what did he say?" She replied, "Do I look like the fucking drummer?" I really appreciated the effort!
Met Stephen at NYC Guitar Center drum demo a few yrs back. I got to play in a drum circle with him. Such a great moment. So exciting. JA is my fav band of all time. Seen them 12 times since 1991. Including the first Lollapalooza. Chatted with him a bit, genuinely a sincere great guy. That kit is a BEAUTIFUL color.
.. you do know, that whether they are, or are not on tour, Stephen is definitely not the guy, in any way, that has to deal with it, .. right, ..? why, . .?? well - .. . . that's what a rich dude's roadie - road crew is for monsieur 🫤
Absolutely love seeing drum cams for Stephen! Jane's cancelled TWICE in Toronto (once with the Pumpkins, once this past tour) but I'd been lucky enough to see them multiple times over the years. Love this guy!
He's in my top 3 drummers list. In every interview he seems so grounded and like you said enthusiastic. I saw Porno for Pyros on their first tour and was thinking there's no way he's going to pull off what you hear on the album. He did. It was mesmerizing.
Stephen does not age! Still looks and plays like he did back in the day. Please get Perry and Dave to hug and come tour Japan. Bucket list to see the original crew together
The band is over. Perry is old and not capable of performing any longer. I seriously don't understand how anyone could want to hear anything from him after what he just did on that last tour.
Modern Drummer camera 📹 guy, this is a Drum 🥁 Kit interview. You can still film the drummers and show the *drum kit* at the same dang time. It’s the only time we really get to see the drums up close.
that dw oak set and 400th anniversary zildjian snare is quite a beast of a set I bet ya love it in your arsenal!Enjoy all your instruments fyi tuning is superb
Saw them here in Reno about a year ago; I was mesmerized. Even by Perry's total charisma and stage presence. Band sounded great. No Punches were thrown. In fact....at that time ( think it was Dec '23?...or maybe like Jan or Feb '24?) ...Navarro wasn't with them; some other guy, who was great! Yeah. Shame it all ended the way it did. Such is....the Music Biz!
Never listened to Janes Addiction, and it sucks their tour was cancelled, basically out of Steven’s hands. Such a cool guy tho! And a great player, glad I watched still
What a stunning set of drums! The Inca gold looks so much better on the drums. The color sample on the website doesn't do it any justice. Any chance you have any info on the mic situation in the kick? Which mic? Placement? Which mic mount?
I hope @stephenperkinsdrummer view’s my post, as well as The entire DW family…the best paint man @louiedwdrums. As you have all treated me so kindly…from meeting Stephen at NAMM 1992, to becoming a part of the DE family in 1994, the opportunity to visit and pick my shells with the sweetest man, @johncraviotto RIP ❤Louie for my own custom violet mica over silver and to Stephen. Whom has been a constant source of inspiration, fantastic energy and his tremendous contribution to music, drummer’s of every level. Great humans ❤ Hope to catch up again before 20 plus years!
Seems like a fun, funny dude to be around. "At the end of the day, we decided to go with this Zildjian 400" I mean, he's being sarcastic, right? Gee really? The snare drum that costs almost as much as my entire kit, AND van combined. If that drum is an option, it'd be embarrassing not to choose it.
Such a shame this tour ended suddenly - Stephen and this kit deserved a longer run !
Yeah, it's really sad that it ended the way it did.
Yes, what a shame. The finish on those drums is just beautiful.
Never been a Jane’s Addiction fan, but I think I’ve just become a Stephen Perkins fan. What a good dude.
Same dude
Perkins is amazing. The lead singer not so much at all.
Such a humble dude who just loves drums. The details of this episode were so cool. Thank you.
I met him at a drum clinic years ago--SUPER nice dude!

Love his enthusiasm and wisdom about drums/drumming.
new respect!

loving the kit rundowns and the podcast! Modern Drummer - the best!
A 38 minute long Stephen Perkins kit rundown?
We are blessed this day 😊
Great interview. Glad they played the pre-interview... fascinating information.

Cool. Rocking the 13” New Beat hi hats.
Thanks Stephen Perkins and Modern Drummer! Greatness
Had the pleasure of meeting Mr Perkins in '93. Absolute gentleman.
Just love his energy. Thanks for doing this one.

This was shot in atlantic city nj.Quite possibly their last decent show!! Love steve perkins.A drumming goat!!
Stephen is SO underrated !
Should be called "Steve Perkins' cancelled tour kit." Sorry you have to deal with that shit, Stephen.

What a great conversation. Very educational!
Stephen is a percussionist. Loved hearing about his roots in the marching band. His passion for the instrument is infectious.
What a time keeper ! Dig it man ! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Perkins rocking the best drum throne out there the *Roc-n-Soc Motion Throne!* I take mine “Low” 🤘🏻 custom of course. 🤙🏻
Perk is so cool. I'm glad I got to spend time chatting it up with him so many times when I saw him play with Banyan. I'll always be a fan of his.
Best episode yet!
I flip the hats over too - the heavier one on top means i have an alternative ride as the bell is bright AF.
He’s a “drummer’s drummer”. I love that!
I love the DW Mag throw and the multi position butt plate!….
They have been out for years how does the modern drummer guy not know them?
@@krusher74 yeah I was kinda shocked with that too…. Lol
22:10 "What a feel he has...forget it. No one feels like Adler." TRUE!!!!!
This was awesome, thank you!
Stephen Perkins is my original drum hero and one of the best to ever do it.
What a legendary human
GOATED 🐐!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stephen does not age! Still looks and plays like he did back in the day. Please get Perry and Dave to hug and come tour Japan. Bucket list to see the original crew together
This was a great one!
Met SP in a drum clinic in the late 90s, couldnt be cooler!!!
Such smooth playing. Seems like a nice, gentle guy.
Janes has to make a come back. My favorite band. Stephen is one of the best rock drummers alive.
They tried and did for a minute and unfortunately due to the mishaps on stage between Perry and Dave the band is no more. RIP J.A. 😢
@@kyleschneiberg Yup it's unfortunate how one member can keep a band from coming back
The band is over. Perry is old and not capable of performing any longer. I seriously don't understand how anyone could want to hear anything from him after what he just did on that last tour.
I see no reason they can't find someone else to be the singer to keep touring - the musicians are playing at peak level.
@@DesignRhythm I am not a fan of PF's vocals, however they are admittedly pretty unique and rather difficult to replace I would have thought.
"We all feel safe around each other." 😬
Ouch.. that did not age well
😂😂😂
one of my fav drummers !!
One of the best drummers in my opinion
Nice!!!
Kit is awesome🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
A class act 🥁😎🥰👊🏻

Wow. Nice guy and still really loves drums. Stay nice Stephen!
Steve could have ended the interview at the 3 minute mark, what he shared was more than enough!
Great clips, loved it
great save on the hh clutch drum technician
Stephen is by far one of the best drummers ever.
Stephen is the most beautiful drummer ever. His drumming is a spiritual experience.
Nick Mason might be a casual drummer until you see him on the "One of these days" video live from Pompei
I wish Perry could have held it together for the fans. But as always he had to turn it into mess. More people needed to see these guys live.
Unfortunately,. the time to see them was in 88-89. One of the best shows I've seen.
*MAYBE* Eric Stephen and Dave will form a new band with a different singer.
I blame his Yoko ono 2.0
@@krusher74 that's very possible.

Nice Drummer and Nice Guy !!!!!
Love his melotic tom use. Always a master behind the kit. Lets pray for these guys that they get past this bullshit and play music again.

Jane’s Affliction!
What snare batter head was that? P14??
Great drummer, great person!! Too bad the tour (and band) fell apart. 🙏🏻
Great interview, love SP. Who were the Liverpudlians at the beginning of the video? Seemed like they were part of a band?
Love it. Thanks MD.
great player and nice guy, tech question, is that 8" tom mounted on a dw hoop mount that is joined to the front hoop also?
What is that cube at the bottom of his Roc n Soc - a weight?
Stephen seems a nice guy
This guy is so happy and i love it!!! Fantastic drummer and a down to earth guy!!! MD please see if you can get Justin Foley from Killswitch Engage!!
Perk saying he feels safe around Perry didn't age too well.
He knew Perry couldn’t maneuver around his kit to get to him.

Could you guys do a kit rundown with Matt Thompson from King Diamond? He’s a monster drummer.
What cymbals does Ringo currently use?
One of the best drummers in the world. Period.
What filters are you using to make Mr. Perkins appear like he doesn’t age?
Isn't the song Jane Says a drum loop and then Stephan plays the live steel drum?
Perky! Such a cool cat!
How has the guy from Moderm drummer only just seen that adjustable butt-end from DW , its been out for years!!!
it's not like modern drummer is a drum store and he's a salesman.
a real drummer who cares about sound, design and playability.
I liked the DW snare sound better than the Zildjian : )
Drum historian ova herrre 😂 Nice kit, and it's good he's playing things as he goes over them.
Perkins rules, saddest thing is actually hearing how off on timing Perry was in the first clip playing stop, they were being troopers😮
Stephen is an amazing drummer! So sad about Jane's
Mandy Moon, great moniker.
DW will never be the same
sadly and unfortunately, it took longer to his drumtech to put together this great setup, than it lasted the tour
Reverb: genuine Steve Perkins rig from "the show" no low balls I know what I got
The dude from modern drummer has never seen a DW snare drum butt adjustment?
Ah man, too bad a typical narcissistic Hollywood couple had to break this band up.
bro had priority seating for the best on stage scrap of 2024 , so far
Steve needs to come back with Infectious Grooves
Absolute legend! too bad they didnt show the steel drums!
