Thank you for watching New Puppy Training - Helpful Reality Tips For First Time Dog Owners. Are you a first-time puppy owner or have you had dogs in the past?
I have had mine for 3 weeks tomorrow :). It is going ok and these videos and puppy kit are so useful! I am so lucky that my 11week old sleeps through the whole night, I am guessing I am just lucky. Have her in my in the crate, snuggle buddy (which I don't have to put the heart on now) and she is as good as gold. These tips are so useful and have kept me sane. Thank you!
You probably dont give a shit but if you guys are bored like me atm then you can stream pretty much all of the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Been streaming with my brother recently xD
Got an 8 weeks old rough collie pup a month ago. Was shocked when it just refused to have any accidents inside on day 2. Somehow it learned to knock on patio door by itself whenever she needs to go. Even with upset stomach. She wasn't house broken before we got her either. Turns out it's a breed specific behavior. Rough collies are super clean.
My puppy has been with us for two and half weeks and here's my reality: 1. Not all puppy's go to the bathroom every two hours.... so far we had to take mine out every 45 min to an hour to go potty. 2. Sleep deprivation is real BUT I got lucky BC after his first week with us he let's me sleep from 9 pm (11 pm, 3am and 5am potty) to 8 am. Which is nice lol 3. Mine sleeps mostly during the day then night. 4. The biggest reality for me is they are ALOT MORE work than babies (had three under three, they are older now) but just as rewarding 5. This was a silly mistake on our end but BUY WINTER BOOTS and a WINTER JACKET. 6. They get Giardia
Thank you for all your help. We got our two pups back in September they are two weeks apart and are now going to be 7mo Feb. What a difference they are about 85 percent potty trained and much calmer.
Reality check, check, and check ✅. Raising a 9-week old puppy here. Thanks Michelle for this video. It’s very comforting and reassuring to know that everything I’m experiencing right now with my furry friend is normal and that it will get better 😊. Thanks for all the tips and tricks!

This is really good advice and helpful for someone like myself that has never had a pet or a pup. It’s also quite scary ish and makes me feel like if in future I do get one will I be ok with it and will it be ok with me?! But I’m gonna save this one so if I ever do get one I can come back and watch this video again .
Am getting a puppy hopefully in 3 months. She'll be my 3rd dog but it's been 14yrs since I've had a puppy so am re-educating myself. I'm REALLY glad i found you. I've watched and learnt so much from you. Thank you!
Great content!! I have a 12 week old Border Collie and found your overview here spot-on! House training has been super frustrating; I feel like he’s getting worse. We’ll take him out to his spots, hang out for several minutes, then walk him, then back to his spot, come inside and 5-10 minutes later he goes on our floor!
I'm in the early menopause, so I'm up 3-4 times a night anyway, so it won't be that different from the past few years. I can't remember the last time I got more than 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep. I'm usually up every 2 hours during the night. I actually slept better when my kids were babies, when I could get 4-6 hours uninterrupted sleep. As for going out in the rain, I have to go out in the rain and the cold morning to let my chickens out to roam the yard. And as for exercise, a major reason why I am getting a dog is I need someone, who will not let me cop out, to get walking for daily exercise. A dog will not say "Ok, I guess you are kind of busy." I can't cop out, I have an incentive to get daily walking in for my health.
Don't worry after menopause, you'll get some uninterrupted sleep 😴 . Then you get old and have to potty all night again😄 It does help with potty training, after awhile your pup will give you the side eye for waking him up to pee😂 all the best to you and your pup
My puppy doesn't like going out to the toilet in the rain. One of the accidents she had was because she saw it raining so she turned back into the house and peed inside. I stand outside with her every time in all weather types and when its raining now I carry her outside and close the door so she has no choice but to go outside. I even stay out with her.
Thanks, Michelle. Gotta say, your vet bills in the US are crazy-expensive! One mercy I'm grateful for here in the UK. Just had our Mini Schnauzer puppy now for 2 weeks; no problems with sleeping, accidents in the house are always my fault for not getting there quick enough. That I can cope with. But he's a biter!! Oh, boy, is he ever! We're his tug-toys for sure, and nothing, but nothing will distract him! Any advice on that? Pleeease? 🐶😧
I have a suggestion if thats ok. Could you have a discussion about the do's & dont's regarding the fact that puppie's bones havent fused together yet? I've seen a few posts and pics about not letting them jump, go up or down stairs, too much walking, running, vigourous play etc. People have different opinions (especially how long we do the dont's for) and it would be great to get some professional advice on it. Thanks ☺
@@HowToTrainADreamDog oh dear. My memory is terrible. I've watched this video a few times and have it in my favourites. No harm in listening again though. Many thanks 😊
Your videos are always helpful and well explained 👏! I new about pups flying restrictions regarding weather, but didn't know about short nosed puppies.
Do you recommend a sling carrier to transport dog outside when you live in an elevator building? Just trying to limit chance of accidents on the way out.
Just curious why don’t you recommend that puppies sleep with their human? My 12 week old black lab mix sleeps with me every night. She sleeps through the night for the most part but usually wakes me up early in the morning to go potty. I don’t mind that, I’d rather she wake me up and take her out than have to pick up poop or pee in the house/crate.
As she grows she will become more curious and less compliant. She'll go through teething where she might want to chew items on the bed, she might decide to take potty breaks on the bed or she might get up and roam around in the middle of the night. This is also the prime time to help her learn that the crate is a good and safe place for rest and relaxation. We recommend waiting until she's older, maybe closer to a year, before letting her sleep with you.
@@HowToTrainADreamDog well thank you for the reply. Also, my dog is terrified of strangers, especially women for some reason. Do you think she’ll ever break out of this if I keep exposing her to new places and new things? Maybe she can learn to trust people and places I trust? Even walking round the house she has her ears tucked back. It’s very frustrating, I don’t take it out on her but I want my dog to be friends with everyone, not afraid of anything and everything.
The vet bills… I didn’t think of that. Picking up puppy tomorrow and honestly I’ve got the regrets and blues already. There’s so many rules w training and discipline. I’m fearful I’ll do those wrong & the dog will revolt. You made a very good point to me abt removing the rugs where he’ll be and I have 2 nice red wood chairs in the room where he’ll be gated into. I knew they chewed, but hearing if they’re mad or frustrated, they will chew my furniture? It’s going to be fine right?

I already have the Puppy. I am having mostly no problems with her since I brought her home a month ago. My only frustration is trying to get her to walk on the lead. Most of the walk she just wants to sit on her ass. I had her two days and she was already begging to go out to the toilet. In the past month I've had a total of eight accidents in the house and she doesn't chew on anything she shouldn't hew on so far. Also I'm using one of those fold out playpens you don't like and it works out perfectly so far. She only had two accidents In it so far. Also she only asks to go out to the toilet every three to four hours. Most of the time she sits at 5he door or baby crate and cries to ask to go out. Shes had all her vaccinations too. And yes between buying everything for her and vaccinations its cost me over €1,200 so far. She isn't my first dog though so I'm able to understand most of her body language. But as I said I'm having trouble walking her on the lead.
@@WaggingTailsDogTraining I've been doing that. I don't pull on the lead either. I would e ok to stop every minute if it was just to sniff something but its infuriating when she turns into puppy anchor but I try to not show her it annoys me.
@@WaggingTailsDogTraining i practiced in my back garden and she was great. The very first walk was great she only stopped twice but she's getting worse every time. Dogs pancake or refuse to move for several reasons but the most common reason for young pups is "overwhelm" as everything outside can be a lot to take in. Your pup isn't giving you a hard time, they are having a hard time. We always work on leash skills in places with the least distraction present...
