Around 3:30, an image appears of Bean, Bark, and Fang. I originally pulled this image off of Google Images, but I did not look at its source. It was used as a thumbnail for a video on ruclips.net/user/Cybershell13 's channel. This was inattentive of me. I'll make sure to check where I'm pulling from, in the future.

I never got to play the old Sega Sonic arcade game that used the trackball, but if they had one in my local arcades as a kid, I know exactly what I would have been wasting my quarters on. At least Ray and Mighty are officially going to be added to a Sonic game with Mania Plus.

Sonic was probably in the movie because over in japan sega IS the arcade scene. They say that sega stopped making hardware but that's only true for consoles. Sega has basically been the king of the arcades in japan since arcades were a thing and they still are. That's the arcade connection.

I can't believe this arcade cabinet was that rare. I still remember playing this arcade cabinet at a summer camp I attended when I was still in elementary school (I think I just finished fourth grade at the time; I'm 22 y/o now btw). There's a lot of people bashing this game, and while it may have some design flaws and pales in comparison to more robust fighters, this arcade cabinet was by far the most popular at the camp. There was always a group of kids lined up to try and play and another group that surrounded the player to spectate.
Metal Sonic was always the character that everyone hyped up. He was infamously too difficult, and whenever someone would actually reach him, other kids would start screaming and shouting out of excitement. One time, a kid got to Metal Sonic and ran out of quarters; he also was pissed off that he kept losing. I happened to be the next person in line, and instead of restarting the run from the beginning, I took over where he left off at Metal Sonic. My memory is a little vague on the events that transpired, but I think nobody really expected me to win; I'm pretty sure I was in the youngest group at the camp. But what I do remember is that I actually managed to beat Metal Sonic and man, that felt so fucking amazing. I remember I raised my fists in the air after winning and everyone around me started screaming and were literally jumping up and down. The camp counselors had to be called in to try and calm everyone down lol
It may be a subpar fighting game when compared to the standards at the time, but for the kids, this game was an absolute blast and made me always look forward to going to camp :)

Shallow fighting game? Really? This game plays just like Virtua Fighter or Fighting Vipers (Well after all it was developed by AM2) There's even evading in this game, I also like the idea of limited shields it makes the game more offence based. Also for a 1996 game it really had good graphics but not as good as Virtua Fighter 3 that was on another level but still something that could not be 100% recreated on the weak consoles from that era! Honestly the gameplay of Sonic The Fighters is actually very good if you learn how it works just like Virtua Fighter also here's a fun fact: Yu Suzuki the creator of the Virtua Fighter and Shenmue series worked as a producer on Sonic The Fighters.

    • @billiam

Okay, that's fair, but I'm reviewing this game in 2018. I couldn't find anyone to play with on Xbox Live. Therefore, the single player experience is really the only thing that this game has to offer anymore. I appreciate your comment. >Sonic the Fighters
    >doesn't show Super Sonic, tell you how to play as him, or tell you what's super about him
    >*triggered*
On a serious note, the game is not challenging if you just aspire to win a playthrough, so I don't totally blame you for finding it shallow and doing little investigation, but if you're going to do a video about it, at least a *cursory glance* at online info would be prudent. You basically told us, "I'm bad at basic button combinations and don't care to take a moment to 'git gud,' so I spammed punches and found out that the single-player campaign is, in fact, built according to its target demographic, i.e. young children."
I have played it against humans via Sonic Gems Collection, and it is just as robust a fighting game as others of its era. It has multiple grabs per character, evasion, attacks from evasion, zip-arounds (Evade at point-blank range to shuffle quickly to the opponent's backside.), shields, shield-breakers (and the dynamic of having a shield broken if you are shielding when grabbed), basic combos, extended combos, differing strength, defense, and speed per character, a small and insignificant, but present competitive meta . . . Honestly, if it had been developed into an actual series like, say, Street Fighter, it'd still have a very active community of "oldfags" just like all the other original fighting games.
You can treat it as shallow if you're only evaluating the single-player campaign, only concerned for completion, and not counting Super Sonic as an adequate incentive to play well (which is not entirely unfair; while it is very satisfying for a moment, it's a short-lived experience, even moreso than Super Sonic gameplay usually is), but no, sorry, what you discussed is not very intuitive to describing the game as a whole.

Metal Sonic could be considered the real final boss of the game. His level is listed as "Final Stage" at the bottom of the screen, and he's by far the toughest character. Eggman's level is listed as "Bonus Stage" and if you lose, you still get to submit your clear time to the in-game leaderboard.
