The game actually had a method for determining how many skill points you received after each battle. If you fainted/lost a stock at any point in the battle, you received one skill point. If you completed the battle without fainting/losing a stock, you received two. If you completed a battle against one opponent without getting hit at all, you received 5 and I THINK if you completed a battle against 2 or more opponents without getting hit, you received 6. Chaos Emeralds gave 10. One of the easiest ways for farming skill points was just to continuously beat sonic's episode, as it was fairly quick.
Yeah, this game can be tough. I spent a lot of time grinding to get the stuff I wanted like Chaos' side splash attack and healing. But, it was cool to have a character that was so customizable. Narratively, it was great to watch Emerl go from barely able to communicate to being able to match wit with Rouge and charisma with Sonic.
I remember grinding Emera into an unstoppable monster with the best skills in the game. You really needed to grind for certain skills and a high enough Skill Point limit to get anywhere early on... Sonic or Shadow's Speed and Cream's healing, if I recall. I think that there were also Emera specific super-skills that surpassed everything in the game for their given slot, though they might have been postgame unlockables. There were some basically-cheating password skills that turned your special into an unblockable instant-kill flurry of attacks themed around any given character, too. Not all the missions in the game were particularly great. There was lot of monotony in mindlessly beating up the same characters over and over in the same near-identical arenas, especially the gray Gamma clones. I remember one where you just had to run away from Rouge and not get hit by her for 2 or 3 minutes or something, so you just did laps around the edges of the square arena. Gaammeeeplaaaaaay.
Sonic Battle was an okay Sonic the Hedgehog-related fighting game, but the virtual training was a pain the butt and the only way you can use all of Emerl's ultimate skill cards is by using Game Shark and that sucks. And by the way, Emerl's name is pronounced "ML".
I played this game when I didn’t know English when I was like 8 and I skipped all the dialog so I didn’t know that I could upgrade my fighting moves so I used the default slow moves for like half the entire story until I accidentally tapped the button to bring up the upgrade menu 😅😅 good times.
Oh man, I really loved this game as a kid. I remember having Tail's and Cream's Punching abilities combined with Shadows Teleportation for my character, where I can escape to a silent corner and Cream Heal. I loved it.
With the amount of games Sonic Team cranked out early on in the old days, I'm surprised they were even able to have games in any finished state. Like, I don't even think Nintendo kept rushing out games like that. Quality over quantity, it's how Nintendo makes games compared to Sega's pump and dump philosophy.
im actually really glad to see a video on this game, I really loved this game growing up and i actually found that grinding the grey robots at the beginning of the first story without taking damage (i believe you get more depending on if you didnt lose a life and if you didnt take any damage) was helpful. if i remember correctly you get like 5 or 10 points when you do it this way. either way, Thanks for bringing up a blast from the past.
Oh yah for sure. This was honestly one of my favorite sonic games. When I was younger I didn't know you could customize Emerald so I ended up beating the game without ever changing emeralds default moves. It was a nightmare. Lol
I appreciate this video so much! Sonic Battle is one of my favorite games. When I first got the game as a kid I didn't know how to equip new skills to Emerl and I was stuck in the story as I couldn't beat Amy with my basic skills. After I got that figured, the game became extremely enjoyable. I would come back from school, sit on the sofa and play in the Battle Mode as Knuckles and / or Chaos against 2x Gamma until the meal was ready. I've spent countless hours in Tails' special training sessions to farm all the rare skills and even got a couple of ??? skills. Though I could never collect them all. In my opinion the mini-games were not that special, except Shadow's Speed Demon with its AWESOME background sprites! I definitely suggest checking it out! Last, but not least, through Sonic Battle I've discovered the legendary Sonic sprite animations on Newgrounds and was motivated to get into sprites myself. I owe this game so much. :D
Hold up, imma take my win here... When pushed against a wall, tap the direction away on impact. You’ll be able to dash toward your enemy and spike them. Emerl’s basic copies of Sonic’s moves aren’t the worst. The start of Sonic’s ground shot can’t be neutralized by a shot defense, which is an instant K.O. when your power bar is full. Use this often. Rouge’s story isn’t that hard. Just jump and spam B. If you camp near a wall correctly, your enemy will jump up and not be able to hit you. This enables you to heal and charge your power bar. Watch out for Knuckles and Sonic with this, though. Double-pressing the L button rotates the camera. You can double-press it again to bring it back to default. Blocking moves builds your power meter. If you K.O. an opponent with one type of move (i.e. shot), they’ll usually respawn as vulnerable to the other type you have equipped. Alternate between the two when going for instant K.O. moves. Having them run into a trap to see if they’re vulnerable to it, BEFORE using your fully charged power meter, is key. All in all, the game isn’t THAT difficult. You just have to spend 300+ hours grinding for the ultimate abilities and special cards, only to never get all of them, to understand how the game works... ...or just read my post, here. Either one works.
definitely an overlook classic. I remember unlocking all the best movesets in this game and all my friends who has this game is shocked and impressed how i got such strong movesets
I totally agree. Leveling up Emerl is such a drag. And not even mention farming to get all the skills and Ultimate skills. But it's so satisfactory to land a combo with the final hit dunking the other one to the ground
Thank you for making the videos still. Brought me a much needed smile this morning. (But if you need to stop or take a break for your mental health then you gotta put your wellbeing first) take care and thanks for all the joy!
That totally sarcastic not sarcastic remark went on for a little too long to not be sarcastic. A highlight. Can't wait for the experimental stuff. Thank you for all your work!
You will never know the feeling of getting all you friends as a kid together and playing this on the game cube with the game boy attachment with four controllers on Christmas 2004
Pro Tip on this game. Grind Sonic's Story and also do active sparring with Tails before you do any other story. You get a lot of skill points on this story and for early game, you do get a fair range of skills. You also have to deal with Gamma as Emerl less. Plus, Gamma's and Tails' healing are busted until you get cream's. I also recommend using Tails' standard combo since it's at least a step up from the basic stuff. After that, it will snowball in a way where you can have something a bit more reasonable. The second best place to grind is Rouge's story. Mostly because her story battles with Emerl mostly are mission based when it's centered around her plus you get bursts of high gains on skill points if I remember correctly.
This is my favorite sonic game! I got it at a flea market for my sixteenth birthday and NEVER lost it so I'm super glad to see somebody else knows this game exists! LoL
So I wanna help a bit with the game mechanic with Emerl, basically this game rewards you for how good you are in fight, if you manage to do a no damage fight you get 10pts, you get 5 if you can do a no live lost through a fight and 1 if you just play normally and lose so yeah camping strats are a big thing if you wanna get buff quickly which will not happen quickly at all also you can farm these point with every chapter basically replaying a short chapter is the best way to do it like a chapter where you can get an emerald fairly easily or without too much fighting would be the sonic chapter but also it's a good place to farm some shadow cards before the shadow chapter (since this mofo doesn't reappears before his own chapter). During the last story there are code to enter at the highway location to get one shot moves you can find the codes online too so it's not too hard tho they are special move that take many sp. So yeah this game is heavy on the grind so if you wanna play this game I'd highly suggest you do so on emulagor with a cheat code that bring your SP to the max and maybe all cards if you don't like farming for character moves

and I THINK if you completed a battle against 2 or more opponents without getting hit, you received 6.
I beat this game without editing emerl's abilities because I was a dumb idiot and somehow missed every dialog that said press R.
I really dig the games stylistic look 😁👌
Don't worry Billiam, we'll give the videos a chance
I loved it.
I love this game, but that first chapter where you fight Knuckles 3 times in a row is a complete chore
People think Sonic is now a sellout, or “dead”.
But in reality... *Sonic is just under appreciated.*
im actually really glad to see a video on this game, I really loved this game growing up and i actually found that grinding the grey robots at the beginning of the first story without taking damage (i believe you get more depending on if you didnt lose a life and if you didnt take any damage) was helpful. if i remember correctly you get like 5 or 10 points when you do it this way. either way, Thanks for bringing up a blast from the past.
Oh yah for sure. This was honestly one of my favorite sonic games.
When I was younger I didn't know you could customize Emerald so I ended up beating the game without ever changing emeralds default moves. It was a nightmare. Lol
“Sonic didn’t have a real story” Fnaf fans are having a mood
favorite game 😁 gald your talking about it
I appreciate this video so much!

Me who's actually good at sonic battle: "FINNALY someone recognizes my genius"
NOT WEIRD?
Chevere Hugprack if I’ve done more then one video on the topic I won’t call it “was weird” :p
Either one works.
i'm here to acknowledge your sonic battle expertise, us lords of niche games no one cares about must hold each other up
definitely an overlook classic. I remember unlocking all the best movesets in this game and all my friends who has this game is shocked and impressed how i got such strong movesets
emerl is a good robot baby boy and deserves the world.
“And like every kid tossed aside by their parents, he turns to Sonic the Hedgehog”
I called out
For those curious about "timeline stuff", Battle takes places sometime after advance 2, but directly before advance 3
This man is digging up all of my childhood and I'm happy in not alone
I totally agree. Leveling up Emerl is such a drag. And not even mention farming to get all the skills and Ultimate skills. But it's so satisfactory to land a combo with the final hit dunking the other one to the ground
Great content home slice. My nostalgia glands are always working hard watching these videos
Did not think I'd be lectured about balls when I came to this Sonic video
"Ball Deodorant" Lmfao
Thank you for making the videos still. Brought me a much needed smile this morning. (But if you need to stop or take a break for your mental health then you gotta put your wellbeing first) take care and thanks for all the joy!
That totally sarcastic not sarcastic remark went on for a little too long to not be sarcastic. A highlight. Can't wait for the experimental stuff. Thank you for all your work!
You will never know the feeling of getting all you friends as a kid together and playing this on the game cube with the game boy attachment with four controllers on Christmas 2004
Sonic battle was my childhood jam, nice to see it getting appreciated
Sonic Battle was probably the main reason stuff like smbz even existed
LoL
I had to have played through this game in its entirety more than 10 times in my childhood
Watching this video almost a year afterwards, to bring back the positive memories of a game I never forgot about. Or in other words...
