    This is incredibly timely. Literally just bought my first camera yesterday which was also my first ebay purchase in over a decade. So this is still really helpful. RUclips algorithm reading my thoughts to add this to my feed...

    Sadly eBay is ALWAYS a gamble ! Yes you can reduce the chances of getting burned but I think a roll of film through it was a reasonable test . Sadly it wasn't enough on this occasion but to be honest where do you stop? Shoot ten rolls and its ok thrn fails on the eleventh? All uou can do is do whats reasonable and the rest of it is in the lap of the gods.

    All an Ebay seller can guarantee at the time of sale is that the camera is functional at that time. Two or three rolls into shooting is a different situation. Some of these cameras have sat for 40 years. Electronics can go "poof." In the case of Minolta cameras, that likely means capacitors. Some are easy to replace and others are not. With other brands, it can be other things. I do not guarantee a 30 day return period. I will let others do that if their business model says that makes sense. I will describe mine as they are at the time of sale, with no authorized returns. There is no way of knowing if/when something will go wrong after that.

    It was working when the seller listed it, sold it, and shipped it. It was working when you received it. It broke after you used it for a while. It's a 45-year-old camera. What do you expect this to be, brand-new consumer goods from Amazon with a warranty?

    • @ForrestMankins
      @ForrestMankins  Год назад

      If you listen to the video, you’ll learn that I should have simply shot one more roll of film through it, as the camera worked for about 40 frames before breaking.

    • @StephenStrangways

      @@ForrestMankins like I said, it worked when the seller had it, it worked when you received it, but you think it should be guaranteed to continue working for a period of time. That's fair for a brand-new item with a warranty, but something used that's 45 years old? Do you think that's fair to the seller? How would they know you didn't misuse it and break it? Why should it be on them to refund you?

    I had the EXACT same thing happen to me when I got my first FE, but the meter stopped working intermittently instead of the film advance. It was extremely frustrating because it was going to be my main nikon camera. Now its in the box of broken cameras to be sold for a loss.

      I feel like there has to be a couple of small time shops that would repair them. When I lived in Eugene there was a little shop that redid an ae1 for me, might try to find them

    • @brendonwilson1318
      @brendonwilson1318 Год назад

      @@ForrestMankins I thought about sending it in, but the problem is intermittent. The repair tech would probably send it back saying he couldn't reproduce the problem. It's only coincidence but the problem only seems to happen when I load it with film and take it out.

    I got an FE for free my advance does the same but i basically just wind after each shot. if the shutter doesn't fire im not wasting a frame, i just wind and shoot. its an issue on alot of them i fixed mine by putting a shim in the bottom but i removed it out of fear it would fall out and wreck it.

    Never had a problem that a seller has not fixed the situation. Either replaced it or refunded it. I just hate that eBay and PayPal went their separate ways. Then you had double protection. I generally only buy gear from Japan....

    This is what happens when you buy used stuff anywhere without a guarantee, Always buy from sellers that offer a guarantee if that is what you want. After 30 days is crazy amount of time to return something, the seller has no idea what was done to it. Just a sellers perspective sorry if i sound rude not trying to be!

    So I just want to let everyone know that I'm sure not a lot of people know about. I had the samething happen to me but for a different product. It was a C02 tank for paintballing. It had a 30 day return. I went paintballing on the 32nd day after purchase, and come to find out, the seller sold me a tank that had been expired for a long while. I had clearly message the seller about that prior from purchase just to makesure it wasn't expired. I called ebay, told them my issue, and ebay told me there was nothing they can do since it was past 30days, but that if I purchase using PayPal, that I have 90 days to return the item since it was falsely advertised. I filed a claim with PayPal, they got involved with ebay and was able to get my money back. Spread the word to everyone you know about this because if ebay never told me, I would have never known.

    Don't feel bad. You didn't mess up. Nor is this the seller's fault. You bought a vintage camera. $hit happens. By your own admission, it worked initially. Unless you buy from a large entity like KEH, expecting an individual to warrant a vintage mechanical item is unreasonable.

  • @rahimkalsi3932
    @rahimkalsi3932 4 месяца назад

    No offense but when you buy something used its caveat emptor, buyer beware. You used the camera and shot 3 rolls of film before it crapped out. More advice for prospective buyers, read the description fully, ask the seller questions and yes definitely use the camera before the return period ends.

      I may one day. For now I will shoot my AE-1. You have to think about how much money you are willing to spend to fix a $100 camera. Maybe $150? more to keep it out of the landfill.
