    Regarding buying in Japan, definitely not necessary for new gear. However, it can be nice for second-hand as I've bought a DSLR and lens in excellent condition for about 40% off the new price. The only thing is I dunno if you can get them without speaking Japanese as I only found them listed in sites in Japanese.
    But I've not been disappointed buying second-hand in Japan.

    I was shocked when I came to Japan and all the Japanese electronics were more expensive than they were back in the UK. Someone told me this was because there is an additional tax that you have to pay to cover the pensions of the workers of the company that isn't charged abroad (I don't know how true this is) but my wife (who is Japanese) told me that it's mostly down to the fact that most Japanese people will only buy Japanese electronics, so they don't have to compete against brands from other countries - like Samsung. It means that the Japanese manufacturers can charge a lot more in Japan than they do abroad.

    I've been shooting for nearly 40 years (no longer professionally, now it's just for fun) and go to work every day just so I can "play" with cameras. Your advice is essentially what I tell "new" photographers when they ask me what camera to get: What do you want to do that you can't already do with your phone?
    Once (if) it goes past that and they ask which BRAND to buy... same thing, go to a store, get touchy-feely with the gear and find something you like because no current major manufacturer makes a "bad" camera.
    Even though I've only shot with Canon gear since the '90s, I've never blindly steered anyone toward them just because that's what I prefer, heck I've sent plenty of people to SONY because they wanted a more video oriented camera.
    As for buying in Japan, I don't know how prices are compared to here in the U.S., but I might look for some additional vintage glass to add to my collection.

    Seriously, though, that general camera buying advice is so important. So many people don't realize that having better gear won't instantly make you take better pictures. Sure there are times and places where having a better camera will absolutely help but spending $5000 on a new camera isn't some magic trick to make you into a better photographer. You do need to realize where your current gear is holding you back before you can really know what you actually need.

  • @DSQueenie
    @DSQueenie 3 года назад

    0:40 as someone who worked in a camera hire house for five years the answer is… the one you can afford. Honestly if you are taking pictures for you and for family price should be your only factor.
    I think I’d always give more advice the more specific you needs. For example if you’re taking pictures at sporting events then you might need to have raw images in a camera with a big sensor. However that will limit your lens choice. The “look” of an image usually comes from the editing after the fact not when you take the picture.

  • @blueclearsky
    @blueclearsky 3 года назад +1

    I want to add one more reason as to why you shouldn't buy your camera in another country. Typically when you buy a camera in another country, the warranty is only valid for that country. So if you are American or Canadian for example, and you buy a new camera in lets say Japan, most likely, if you ever need to have that camera serviced, It will need to go back to its country of origin, which in this case would be Japan. When you are back in your home country your camera is considered a "grey market" camera. Often camera shops (I work in one part time here in NC), won't even touch a grey market camera, for trade or otherwise. As Norm stated, generally its not going to be cheaper to buy something in another country. There are some exceptions to this, South American countries being one, Its cheaper to get a camera in another country such as America, and bring it back. I have a Brazilian friend who does this when he goes home to visit.
    As I tell my customers, the best camera is the one that you have with you. Also, if you're getting your first camera, pick up several different models and brands, pick the one that feels the best to you in your hands. If you don't like holding it, you won't ever use it. And I will close by saying that no one, makes a bad camera anymore. Dont get caught up too much in the specs, especially if its your first camera. Get something that you like to hold, learn it, and go have fun.

  • @billierae4406
    @billierae4406 3 года назад

    Fantastic advice and sum up! I worked in a camera shop for 7 years and am currently a photo technician at a uni; all these years later I still tell people "pick up a camera and see which one feels nice in your hand." I shot with a Sony a7R3 which is perfect for me as I have joint issues so the lighter weight and smaller grip is perfect for me while offering the quality I want within my work. However if I gave that camera to my brother who's built like a tank he'd find it far to small and fiddly. You really need to get your hands on a camera before you make a purchase. If you like the way a camera feels in your hand then you're more likely to pick up the camera as you head out.

    I mean, while brand loyalty is indeed a very dumb idea; sticking to one lens economy is still an important thing to think about. Not everyone can just buy 2000$ lenses to make every possible mount look decent and have the freedom of choice~ There are still valid reasons to stick to one brand, but judging from most of these recommendations - money is not a factor for you, haha. 😜

    This was really great advice.
    Honestly phone cameras today are great quality. It was a good reminder when you said to figure out which aspects are important to you before upgrading, that's advice I can use in so much of my life.
    I used to only use my phone, but started trying to use an old DSLR my sister gave me because 1) that tactile aspect makes you feel more legit 2) I wanted to be able to focus on something/blur what's not focused. The only problem is the camera has auto focusing problems, but I figure it just helps me improve on my own manual setup!

  • @WizardOfOss
    @WizardOfOss 3 года назад

    An even bigger reason for getting your camera before you go to Japan (or any destination): get to know your equipment before you go! I once traveled with a camera (the first Sony RX100) which I only received the day before my flight. And while all of the basics were clear, a lot of the more intricate settings were not and some things were actually bothering me. And you just don't want to read manuals on the go. Also, the camera I got started to have some problems after a few days of use, and some days later stopped working altogether, so for most part of that trip I still had to use my old camera I brought as a backup.
    And after a few years of using high end compact cameras I'm back with my old DSLR again. Exactly for the reason you mentioned: the feel of it. The phone is perfectly fine for snapshots, but in the end there's just nothing like taking pictures with a real camera. Even when those compacts are close in image quality, much more convenient when it comes to video, and obviously are so much smaller and lighter (the main reason I switched to those a few years ago), taking pictures with those just doesn't bring the same joy as working with a proper camera.

    Roughly 6 months ago, I upgraded my phone for access to the camera, and find that, for what I use it for, the phone is better for my circumstances than the Pentax, and the phone camera gets a lot more use.

    My advice: watch films, don't be embarrassed to take shots, bring an extra battery, and practice practice practice!

  • @fitbmx7744

    Great video! As a photographer I have a few recommendations.
    If you are a beginner and also want good non-4k video, I highly recommend the Canon EOS T7i. It has good auto-focus for stills, but in video it uses dual-pixel autofocus that is crazy good. The body I think is less than $700.
    Lenses, don't think that native lenses (canon, sony, nikon) are the only way to go, third party (tamron, sigma) are just as good, if not better, and half the price. I have a Tamron 28-70 f2.8 Gs and it's focus speed and stabilization is incredible.
    Vintage lenses, if you learn to manual focus there are some really great lenses out there, that will cost less than $50. And learning in full manual will make you a better photographer/videographer in the end.
    Also, if your photos just don't seem as good as you want, 90% of the time it's you not the gear... Sorry. When your gear is holding you back, you will feel it.
    Tripods, GET A GOOD ONE! Even if this means it is old, aluminum, and heavy. That just means you will build a little more muscle while out shooting.
    Action cameras, my brother is a youtuber and has had great luck with a Yi 4K. They aren't as tough as a gopro, but they are cheap.
    He also uses a DJI Osmo Pocket, it has a full gimbal, tracking, and is incredible for walking and talking into the camera because wherever you move it follows your face movement. It is just und $300, but with the gimble and the video quality it is a good price.

    Drive it till you break it. Great life advice! Also, I think I've been doing that with my phone. I can't do what I want if filming with my camera, but im fortunate enough to have started my college life as a photography major, with a friend who believed in me. So I have a nice camera... unfortunately I need to re-learn all of it, but at least I have the equipment! It's helpful to know what basic stuff does, to know what bells and whistles you need, for what you're trying to do.

    With Gerald covering the scientific spec angle of gear, we need a channel who focuses on working with gear in the field and we'd all be set. Or maybe a few channels for different types of work. Great vid

    I have found you can often get good deals on high quality used gear in Japan. I wouldn't normally buy new gear there, but I've done well buying used stuff that generally appears as new and comes with all the original "stuff".

    My first real camera purchase was the Sony a6000. Not only is it a great starter camera if you decide to upgrade later to a different Sony camera, you still get to use all your lens because they all use the same mounting system. There is a disclaimer though depending on the lens and camera you buy, you might have to deal with a cropped image.

    I had been comparing some cameras in a low budget for this field. Something you said in there was actually really helpful. Because I'd been watching all these reviews, tutorials and comparison videos...and they talk a lot about features that I mightn't really use, but I think I let myself get distracted by all that talk. Like, what 'I' would actually use for.

    As a Swede, prices will almost all the time be cheaper in Japan (confused if I should laugh or cry).
    I am a noob when it comes to cameras, never had one, but i take lots of photos and right now I am enjoying my Samsung Galaxy S20+.
    But the 360 camera is interesting, I have taken 360 photos with my Samsung but I have to use some programs to stitch them together so they look good afterwards.
    whenever Kiki is in the video, it is a perfect video, thanks Norm ;)

    The biggest reason not to buy a new camera in Japan (or wherever you're going) is because you should give yourself time to become comfortable with the new gear beforehand.
    I feel more and more than an iPhone is enough for me (aside from the lack of real background blur). I'm thinking I should sell my (admittedly old) DSLR gear, but I should try shooting with both first, and see if I change my tune.

    Every time I look at a DSLR I get itchy fingers and want to buy, but I definitely don't have the need or the skills. And my phone camera takes some great shots, so I definitely don't need it. Thanks for the reminder, Norm!

    Honestly editing in a software like Lightroom will make your photos go waaay further than the latest and greatest camera body. That being said stuff like action/sports/wildlife can be tough to photograph without a decent camera due to the fast moving subjects.

    The best camera is the one you have with you. You will take better pictures, only if you take them. More RUclipsrs and photographers need to say this.
    Regarding gear, even some classic japanese film cameras are cheaper and more available from other parts of the world. But if you want an item in the best possible condition, Japan is always the best source. People DO take care of their stuff.

    I had a great experience buying a lens though :) no software language obviously. I got an EF-M 32mm f1.4, that came with: tax free, visa promotion discounts, free mini tripod and a free google home mini! Nuts, love that lens. It had only come out just a week or two before. Just got lucky with the promotions I’m sure.

    Cameras are used to capture moments in time, and often times, the best camera is the one you have with you, and readily available to use. Even if it's a cellphone camera (which is no longer potato in quality), that exact moment captured may never happen again, so unless you had a high-end camera already in hand and ready to go (all the correct aperture, shutter, ISO settings, etc), sometimes the simplest and most convenient solution is best.

      It might be worth comparing how the prices are in your country, too, I know some stuff is expensive to get hold of in parts of Europe and some other parts of the world. Japan may well be cheaper than Switzerland for all I know. :)

I had a Harry Potter holding his wand moment with my Nikon Z6 and never looked back - making sure that I have the gear that I enjoy using every day to take pics (and more recently video) instead of focusing on the specs of the gear has been a huge lightbulb moment for me in recent years! :)

    Tokyo Lens is awesome. As a fellow Canadian, who has lived in Saskatchewan all my life, someday I would like to visit Japan. Anyways, I got the dslr camera bug almost 2 years ago. First I bought a Nikon D500 and picked up a Sigma 150mm-600mm, then 6 months after that another Nikon D780, just because it was newer, and I shoot the majority of my shots on wildlife, especially birds of all kind. We live along the migratory route from south usa to northern sask. I live in southern saskatchewan. I still prefer taking pics with my dslrs over my samsung s23 ultra. Im hoping to possibly buy a fully digital camera sometimes in 2023. I heard a rumor that Nikon may be bringing out a Nikon Z6 Mk3, which is supposed to be great for wildlife, flying and static. Anyways keep up the awesome work on the channel.
