Phil, you say "thank you for your time" at the end but it's in reverse. Thank you for taking the time to make these informative, no bs videos. They really help in making gear decisions. Cheers!
??? Paul i asked a couple questions the other day about different PRS's guitars i want to buy. But where in the greater Phoenix area can i go that has a good enough selection of PRS. I want to try the S2 McCarty SC 594, The SE Pauls Guitar, The SE Zach Meyers simi hollow, The SE Mark Holcomb, and The SE Tremonti. I also would like to find a PRS guitar with the same set up you like with one tone one volume and a 3 toggle switch. Do you think PRS would send me the guitars for me to try. And i send them the ones i dont want back and keep the ones i want with a check ?
Phil! Just bought a Charvel So Cal off eBay and it has a slightly protruding skunk stripe. How can I go about fixing this situation? What are my options?
I keep catching myself playing the little riff you play on the clean sample....its stuck in my head!!!....keep up the good work Phil!..my favorite channel!
That was a terrific presentation of Pete's Alnico IV Thornbucker pickup. I appreciate the detail, enthusiasm & transparency with which you share gear, service, mods and ideas with us. AND, the spirit of camaraderie you afford fellow Tubers. Thank you!
One of my absolute favorite pickup sets. I have the Thornbucker Neck and Thornbucker + bridge in my Pete Thorn signature Suhr. The Suhr SSH+/SSV combo is amazing as well.
Hey, Phil! Thank you so much for the in-depth review covering all the pickup combinations. Also, thanks for reminding me to check out Pete Thorn's channel (which I have been doing for a few months).
Thank you, Phil! This episode made me COMPLETELY rethink my need for aggressive deathbucker p/u's. You CLEARLY demonstrated the need for clarity over power!
Best pickup reviews on RUclips. You put a lot of effort in the pickup comparisons even to the point of buying a special guitar for the purpose. Today I'm going to add a treble bleed circuit in one of my guitars to check it out. It seems to really make a difference. Thanks again, Phil.
Lower out put pickups Rule. It took me half-my-lifetime to realize and understand Tone. Loving the Thornbuckers = sound phenomenal. I'd love to Hear them, side-by-side vs. Lollar low-wind Imperials???
First off I am just wondering what was in this video that warranted 12 thumbs down??? Phil, great video. You do a great job of capturing the sound as accurately as possible when making these videos. I have been prefering mid output pickups more and more. I put a Saturday Night Special in one of my guitars and instantly fell in love. Like all things these are tools in a toolbox it just depends on how you use them. Thank you!!!
Great review and nice to have a baseline comparison. Also really happy you demonstrated various roll off levels…it's how I have played fo many years. Kudos
I just got a set of these for my les Paul and I am so in love. What a beautiful paf tone. They really do it all, clean up great but can still kick some ass
When shopping for pickups resistance alone is one bit of info... What I would also like to see specified Is the gauge wire used, the thickness of insulation, number of windings used and total length of winding..
P. S I know that many companies give you the chance to listen and provide charts.. I suppose I'm being silly as for now only looking at the cheapest sets... and asking too much..
Those pups are really awesome and versatile for a wide range of genres . Nice demo and I give them a two handed thumbs up coming from a jazz blues guitarist.
Using the 59 to hear the clarity difference was great. I really like the coil split on these too. They sound great. I'm not a big pickup modder but man, those sound great.
I installed a set of Thornbuckers and absolutely agree. They sound like huge single coils and one of the most beautiful clean sounding pickups I've played. I think I would go with an Aldrich or THorbucker+ in the bridge if I could do it again.
I added thornbuckers to my G&L ASAT semi-hollow. What a difference! Made my guitar sound so much better then stock pickups! Originally came with G&L version of JB and Jazz.
I did a sharpen my axe on an old Chapman ML1 I bought cheap. Put a Thornbucker in the bridge and two V60 in the middle and neck. Hey presto a Suhr HSS super strat.....possibly! Vanity project for sure but it sounds great. Thanks for all you do to keep us sane in this crazy world. 👍🤘🏻🎸👍🤘🏻🎸👍🤘🏻🎸
Dude, that Somnium system is amazing! I was already leaning towards the Thornbuckers to replace the ProBuckers in my Epi Explorer, and this just sold me. Also, I had never considered a push-pull treble bleed circuit. Have I been missing out on tonal variations all this time?
Hi Phil, thanks for the (as always) great video. I was looking at a SD '59 Custom Hybrid (I know that's not the same one you tested) for an HSS Cutlass, but you might have just changed my mind. I trust your opinion so much that you thinking highly of something puts me totally at ease in buying it. You've taught me so much since I started watching your videos, so thanks!
Love Thornbuckers, I got one in my PRS S2 bridge position and a 59' in the neck. Since my S2 was routed for 3 pickups I cut out a spot for a single coil in the middle and put in a texas special. Not many HSH PRS out there ;)
Very helpful demo! Have you tried Suhr SSV? It's probably the most common pickup in Suhr guitars, at least in the neck position. I wonder how it compares to the Thornbucker.
I have the Thornbucker+ in bridge of my Strat and it RAWKS! It splits unbelievably well in combination with the middle pickup. Great presentation of the pickup Phil!
Man what a great video. honestly.... that was amazing to hear. Thanks Phil I have a 2009 candy purple style 2 charvel with the seymour duncans and always wondered what it would sound like with Thorn Buckers now I know. And want of course ahhhh!!!
I packed up around 2-dozen guitars in their cases as we’re moving shortly (read: wife said get the guitars off the walls and into cases ;). It’s a few weeks away so I kept one guitar out to play. A Suhr T-style with thornbuckers. Wonderful sound and really unique out of phase settings in the 2 and 4 positions. Enjoy :)
The Thornbuckers were very nice, balanced and clear, and probably more useful than the '59's in a variety of settings. Even though the '59s bass frequencies were a bit over the top, they had a growl that I liked, and I imagine they would be more fun to play. Thanks
I purchased a set of the Thornbuckers for my Burny LP Lawsuit guitar and they sound really amazing. I have re-wired it wired 59 style and to be honest they do sound much better in a traditional wiring scheme in my opinion. The sound great and they are priced really well.
Hi Phil. Love your reviews. My latest project is to take an Eart t380 and mod the bejeezus out of it all in the name of science. I decided to put a set of Thornbuckers in it (basically doubling the price of the guitar) and found there is a new Thornbucker 2 bridge pickup. 9k with alnico 2 magnets. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this latest iteration from Suhr. Better? Worse? Meh? Anyway I'll let you know what my final Eart/Suhr beast looks like and costs when it's all done. Thanks again for the reviews and keep them coming.
Just came across this… Interesting guitar. I thought you were comparing the Thornbucker with a JB? Or, is a 59 also called a JB? I’m not real familiar with Seymour Duncan’s pickups. Great video….thanks for sharing.
The other day I watched a Pete Thorn video from 8 years ago on the plexi tone pedal and was blown away by his playing. I honestly forget how good that guy is sometimes, then wham he a video from 8 years ago reminds me. Very few guitarists come close to achieving that level of playing. Elite Imo.
Sounds great! I've been eyeing alnico IV humbuckers for a project for a while. Would love to see this compared to the Duncan Saturday night specials and Tonerider alnico IVs. I've heard a lot of PAFs actually had alnico IVs not Vs 🤔
I've had both the Thornbucker and the SNS. The Thornbucker is a very mid heavy pickup, the SNS is more even sounding to my ear. Either can sound a bit too polite imo. A Throbak Wagner kicked both of them out of my HSS strat, expensive but worth it. The new Shawbucker double tap in my Tele Deluxe is a great sounding pickup that I prefer to either the Thornbucker or the SNS.
Mr. McKnight, Love your shows, l have a question. I'm not hating anyone in anyway. It's just I've been playing guitar for over 4 decades. How many times can you make a new pick-up. To my understanding there is a certain amount of winding, a few different magnets you can try and maybe the gauge of wire. You would think every possible way has been tried. So simply asking, what is your favorite? I know it depends on the type of music you play. But if you can pick two humbuckers. H-H is my favorite. What would you choose. Not counting endorsements.
I loaded a pair of Thornbuckers (Thornbucker +) in the bridge in my Carvin CT624 a few years back! Great pickups and worth the money IMO. I'm running with a Freeway switch and a pull on the tone knob to get a tone of tonal options.
I agree, so far there is not a real great comparison video head to head. The examples I watched were just overdriven to death and hard to make a solid conclusion
I have a Sheptone Blue Sky Set in my R8 and my 76 Destroyer, but always liked Pete Thorn’s tone. Turns out the are the same kind spec 8.4K / Alnico 4 (which is kind of a weird magnet) usually they are A5 or A2… My favorite single coil is the Motor City Woodward 3 which is another weird magnet for a Strat A3, but it is by far the best for a Hendrix/SRV type tone. Now I’m looking for a good P90… I heard a Masterbuilt Thinline Strat with Dual Seymour Duncan Antiquities P90 and Rosewood neck that kind of Floored me. The ones in my R6 Custom Shop are pretty good too.
I'm thinking of putting the Thornbucker+ in the bridge of my strat with the Dimarzio Crusiers. I've got the AT-1 in there and it's just not working for me...
like usual, this was a short and sweet review. Every time u bring out the Somnium i watch the review, because it is, hands down..the best way to compare pickUps . thank you for the video ;) . I’m thinking of installing a neck Thornbucker on a G&L Asat bluesboy semi hollow. do you think it might be a balanced match for that MFD bridge PUp ? thanks again cheers from Portugal
I have a set of those pick ups (matter of fact the bridge one is the TB+) in one of my guitars and became my go to one to do it all guitar. I was surprised and amazed how versatile and very useful Humbucker and single sounds it have.
I’m really stuck between these and the suhr dsh. I want a full, warm, and smooth pickup that isn’t harsh, but can be pushed with an overdrive into heavier territory if need be.
I love the look of the Pete Thorn Signature but the pickups and the switching make me nervous. I love the sharpness that Alnico V gives to the low strings. I have owned Alnico 2 pickups and they're always too "mushy" or "spongy" in the lows. Big turn off for me. I am also unsure I would like the switching where the 5 position is the neck humbucker single coil; I smack my pickup selector a lot between positions 1 and 5 and feel like it would take a lot of finesse to get to Position 4 for the full neck humbucker. Appreciate this video big time, though. Very helpful.
Hi Phil, hey just saw this! Thanks for the video!!!
Thank you guys for cementing. I try and read them all. Let me know what pickups you would like to see or hear next.
Phil, you say "thank you for your time" at the end but it's in reverse. Thank you for taking the time to make these informative, no bs videos. They really help in making gear decisions. Cheers!

Love IV magnets..the SD Saturday night special. Uses them..and I absolutely love that pup..so much clarity and it sounds just perfect to my ear
Thank you Phil for the great content!
I keep catching myself playing the little riff you play on the clean sample....its stuck in my head!!!....keep up the good work Phil!..my favorite channel!
Thank you Jaime
This is the kind of specific guitar nerdy video that made me start watching RUclips. Awesome Phil!
This is one of the rare pickup demos on youtube where I could actually hear a difference. Absolutely sick sounding
The Pete Thorn Suhr is on the dream guitar list.
That was a terrific presentation of Pete's Alnico IV Thornbucker pickup. I appreciate the detail, enthusiasm & transparency with which you share gear, service, mods and ideas with us. AND, the spirit of camaraderie you afford fellow Tubers. Thank you!
Awesome as always, Phil! We appreciate your time and knowledge
Great video, Phil. We all know the Thornbuckers sound awesome, and you gave a perfect insight into the specifics of why we think they sound awesome.
One of your best vids to date, great well rounded demo and the Thornbuckers sounded incredible!! Thanks man!
Wow that's cool, first time I've ever seen a guitar that you can switch out pickups so efficiently, literally plug and play.
Great, now I have buy Thorn Buckers
One of my absolute favorite pickup sets. I have the Thornbucker Neck and Thornbucker + bridge in my Pete Thorn signature Suhr. The Suhr SSH+/SSV combo is amazing as well.
Hey, Phil! Thank you so much for the in-depth review covering all the pickup combinations. Also, thanks for reminding me to check out Pete Thorn's channel (which I have been doing for a few months).

Yes, sounds nice, a little mellower, less harsh in the mids than a '59.
Very awesome tonality and versatility! It's quite amazing how each setting has its own unique voice. Great playing too!
We appreciate you too Phil! Keep doing what you do!
Lower out put pickups Rule. It took me half-my-lifetime to realize and understand Tone. Loving the Thornbuckers = sound phenomenal. I'd love to Hear them, side-by-side vs. Lollar low-wind Imperials???
Very nice sounding pickups to my ears! Definetly seems to help keep the clarity alive in distortion, something that can sometimes be a huge issue.
Best picky demo'er on the planet. These sound fantastic. You may have genuinely convinced me to order one.
Thanks for a great review. The Thornbucker sounds great. Please can you do a comparison video, Thornbucker vs Probucker and Burstbucker.
Those pickups sounded awesome. You keep showing me things that I need to buy but I can't afford to do that. Thanks for all the great videos.
What a great video. This was an outstanding demonstration of some wonderful pickups. Thank you!
First off I am just wondering what was in this video that warranted 12 thumbs down??? Phil, great video. You do a great job of capturing the sound as accurately as possible when making these videos. Great job Phil. I wish there were more pickup demos like this. I really liked the split sound. Also that dirty Shirley sounds incredible!
Great stuff from Phil... as ALWAYS! Love what you do!
Your playing really make those pickups shine. Keep up the work!
Thanks for your videos phillip, like the guitar collection you're getting. Keep it up!
Most helpful and informative video about pick ups! Learning a ton and loving this series.

These sound great but Have you ever tried the Fender Wide Range Cunife reissues? They are a humbucker with clarity and punch.
Those pups are really awesome and versatile for a wide range of genres .
Nice demo and I give them a two handed thumbs up coming from a jazz blues guitarist.
Man, I so enjoy your pick-up reviews. Have a guitar just dying for a set of those Thornbuckers. Thanks Phil! Stay cool and keep rockin' it!!!!

I've had these for over a year. It's my go-to neck pick-up. Got it in 3 guitars.
These have become my favorite pickups! Super smooth!
Sounds absolutely amazing through my phone. I’m sold. Thanks Phil!
Pups sound great! Thanks Phillip!
The TB and TB+ have been on my short list for a long time. I need to finally pull the trigger one of these days!
Hot swappable pickups+Phil's video ideas=some of the best online content available. Those pickups sound pretty great!
I added thornbuckers to my G&L ASAT semi-hollow. What a difference! Made my guitar sound so much better then stock pickups! Originally came with G&L version of JB and Jazz.

They sound super clear and delicious. That has got to be the best split-coil humbucker sound I can recall hearing, ever...
That was a great review Phil. Your demonstration showed just how versatile and unique those pickups are.
Great review! I like that the volume doesn't drop when playing notes, that's pretty cool!
Dude, that Somnium system is amazing! I was already leaning towards the Thornbuckers to replace the ProBuckers in my Epi Explorer, and this just sold me. Also, I had never considered a push-pull treble bleed circuit. Have I been missing out on tonal variations all this time?

Phil you just keep nailing it with your videos. Thanks so much
I put a set of Thornbuckers in a Schecter E-1. I love them.
Thanks a lot. Good rhythm section btw. Great feel.
Man what a great video. honestly.... that was amazing to hear. Thanks Phil I have a 2009 candy purple style 2 charvel with the seymour duncans and always wondered what it would sound like with Thorn Buckers now I know. And want of course ahhhh!!!
I wonder how the thornbucker set will sound on a es335 style body guitar?

Nice sounding Alnico IV's! This was a great review, keep up the good work Phil!
Don't play guitar but guitar is my favorite instrument love the channel keep on jamming you know your gear 🤘🤘🎸
Thank You Phil 🤘🏼🎸
To me, Sound a bit warmer and "crunchier" than Lace? You Phil? Thanks and Best Regards!
I purchased a set of the Thornbuckers for my Burny LP Lawsuit guitar and they sound really amazing. I have re-wired it wired 59 style and to be honest they do sound much better in a traditional wiring scheme in my opinion. The sound great and they are priced really well.
Love the pickups. I’ve been thinking getting p90 style pickups for the hum bucker route. I may get these instead.

Shur Thornbucker's sounding real good. Now this 5 second pickup swap now that was impressive
Just came across this… Interesting guitar. I thought you were comparing the Thornbucker with a JB? Or, is a 59 also called a JB? I’m not real familiar with Seymour Duncan’s pickups. Great video….thanks for sharing.
Definitely getting these! Great review!

@@ForeverDownByLaw Thanks Patrick, appreciate the input! I will check out the Throbak as well.
@@leftygtrplr6184 No problem. Another great affordable pickup is the Dimarzio 36th Anniversary. I quite like that one.
I have a Thorn bucker in my Collings cl and it sounds amazing
Thinking about putting these in a Les Paul. I have a SSV in my Suhr and like it but I think the Thorn is more PAF.
Phillip, what are your settings on the Friedman ?
I'm wondering what you think of that solar behind you?
I really like it. Plays great sounds great. Its super light under 7 lbs so its fun to play
Put some of these, a + in the bridge reg in the neck, in my PRS S2 and love em, gave me the sound I was looking for
Mr. McKnight,
Love your shows, l have a question. I'm not hating anyone in anyway. It's just I've been playing guitar for over 4 decades. How many times can you make a new pick-up. I have Thornbuckers in my PRS CE24 and they’re terrific
Solid vid Phil!
I loaded a pair of Thornbuckers (Thornbucker +) in the bridge in my Carvin CT624 a few years back! Great pickups and worth the money IMO. I'm running with a Freeway switch and a pull on the tone knob to get a tone of tonal options.
Confused. The title says ‘Duncan JB’ but what was used were ‘59s….
This pickups are amazing!
I have them on my Les Paul.
Is it possible to compare them to the Aldrich set?
Thanks
I agree, so far there is not a real great comparison video head to head. The examples I watched were just overdriven to death and hard to make a solid conclusion
What a range of ear-candy, big full-bodied sound with clear mids and crystal-like treble tones
I have a Sheptone Blue Sky Set in my R8 and my 76 Destroyer, but always liked Pete Thorn’s tone.
Turns out the are the same kind spec 8.4K / Alnico 4 (which is kind of a weird magnet) usually they are A5 or A2…
My favorite single coil is the Motor City Woodward 3 which is another weird magnet for a Strat A3, but it is by far the best for a Hendrix/SRV type tone.
Now I’m looking for a good P90… I heard a Masterbuilt Thinline Strat with Dual Seymour Duncan Antiquities P90 and Rosewood neck that kind of Floored me.
The ones in my R6 Custom Shop are pretty good too.
Would be interesting to compare to prs dragon ii which also are alnico 4. Prs are maybe a tad more hot. 8k and 12k.
Forgive the stupid question, but how are popping the pickups in and out like that? What system are you using? 😊
I love the PUs. I put them in a HB Fusion II w/ the roasted maple neck...Amazing!
I like that better than anything I've heard in awhile!! Finally something worth trying! Thanks and great review Phil!! JMHO..8) --gary
I'm thinking of putting the Thornbucker+ in the bridge of my strat with the Dimarzio Crusiers. I've got the AT-1 in there and it's just not working for me...
Phill.... Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Exactly what i wanted to know about Pete's PU's.
like usual, this was a short and sweet review. Every time u bring out the Somnium i watch the review, because it is, hands down..the best way to compare pickUps . thank you for the video ;) .
I’m thinking of installing a neck Thornbucker on a G&L Asat bluesboy semi hollow. do you think it might be a balanced match for that MFD bridge PUp ?
thanks again
cheers from Portugal
They both sound usable for different applications. Suhr for distortion. 59 for heavy fuzz. Great demo AB.
Wow. Excellent comparison! Can you also compare the Thornbuckers against the Bareknuckle Rebel Yell? Thanks! 🙏
