Phil, Thank you so much for the shout out! There are only a few CMG dealers currently, and we are happy to have been working with them since.... 2014 I think! We have a factory tour video on our channel if anyone wants to hear more from Chris about their build process! Thanks again!!
This was a great video, Phil. I’m a huge CMG fan! Chris took us on a tour of their humble factory a couple of years ago. One of the nicest dudes you’ll ever meet. Great quality US made guitars!
So refreshing to see Phil back on the workbench. He has been the true motivator of my local guitar tech shop that I opened 2 years ago. We need to change his title to The Godfather of Gear! Thank you again Phil for your dedication.
Love my CMG Ashlee - it's a solid body and about 10 pounds - neck dive NOT an issue..... One of the few guitars I own that I have never considered modding or upgrading. It just doesn't need it. (it did come with the Dimarzio 36 Anniversary PAF pickup option).
I've been looking for USA made guitars away from the usual big brands. A hollow body LP is very interesting. These were nice mods you made and still restorable. As the Brits say, "Brilliant ". Thanks.
Love that you gave RNA Music a shout out. The Ashley is a VERY interesting guitar. I love Les Pauls but a nicer one is still quite a bit more. This is a great alternative. Thanks and great video.
Thanks for turning me on to CMG guitars, I definitely see one in my future. I was pondering customizing an Agile (also LP style), but since there is someone in the states making these I will stick with made in the USA anytime I'm given the option.
Chris at CMG custom made me an Ashlee out of Walnut my grandfather cut on Brays Island Plantaion in SC in the 1950's. It is a beutiful awesome guitar that has walnut neck and body. Check it out on his custom page. Hope to pass it to a grandchild one day. Oh, BTW, I got to see the guys build it at the shop!
That sounds amazing! I get my first custom CMG guitar next month. The specs on it, people would either say they love it or I am an absolute monster haha
I bought a CMG Ashley semi hollow with F holes, same color as yours Phill. I love this guitar. I intend to put in Seymour Duncan Pearly gates when I get the cash
I added a gold vented flat style Duesenberg trem to my purple/gold Grote ES335 style guitar and it looks and works great! I did have to order it new from France through ebay. Very stylish looking and well made.
Awesome vid! Thanks for the tip around 5:20: I guess we've all spent some time crawling around under the workbench in search of fallen screws and other small parts that got away.
Perfect timing. Glad you posted this. Just today a friend gave me a guitar he got from a neighbor that was missing a string. Turns out it was also missing a screw on one tuner. The hole was stripped, other one wasn't much better. Did the toothpick/woodglue trick tonight. Gonna let it sit for 24 and we'll see ;-) Thanks!
Glad you mentioned the guitar came with a gig bag. Sometimes those tremolo bridges will not let you close the case lid. That sticker on the back of the headstock looks like it will fall off eventually.
I bought my Ashlee (#76) from a small dealer in WV. It had a spalted maple top and DiMarzio pickups. A killer guitar It was a great deal and I loved it, except it was too heavy for me. I bought it before he offered hollow guitars. I let it go, but I'd still own it, if it had weighed 6 pounds. I would live to own another one. Love that tremolo. It's amazing what a difference 2 oz. can make! Thanks for sharpening this axe, and finally featir3this amazing brand, from a really cool guy and his company.
i recently moded a HB sc custom from 2009 (190euro), seymore duncan tb 6 and sh 6. plus a puretone jack, cts pots tad mustard cap and a freeway 3x3 toggle. now it is an awesome guitar!
Wow Phil, you've really upped your editing lately! It wasn't anything bad before, but now it's really amazing and matches your expertise. Great video as always!
They’ve improved since this one was built with new models looking a even better! This is an awesome shop and sells handmade guitars made by Americans by hand in the USA for less than $1k! This is cheaper than a lot of Chinese mass produced ones abs they’ll even do custom shop work with whatever you can imagine for FAR LESS than the big builders! Super awesome guys and great guitars.
I love the idea of adding a tremolo and what it adds to the balance too. I love love lovelovelove that guitar!!!!! Holy crud if I could have any guitar in this world...❤️❤️❤️❤️.... *btw once I saw a vid of you trying that temolo I was sold on it. It's the lack of a nice reasonable sized trem that originally made me hold back on Les Paul style guitars. You solved it for me! Thank you so much. Thank you thank you thankyouthankyouthankyou....❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.....
A piezo-equiped tune o matic bridge, ie. Fishman or Graphtech, would be cool to try on a full hollow guitar. Supposedly it makes a bigger difference in piezo sound than in electric pickups sound.
Great video! I wanted to know how you make a video where you mic a cab but you also go to talking within the same take? It amazes me how people on RUclips are talented in ways that they probably don't know. Playing guitar is one thing but to record and edit the videos is another. Thank you for the upload!
LP with tremolo? Affordable and Made in the states? Sign me up! Really nice upgrades to this axe Phil. It sounded super crisp and clear, would definitely be a pleasure to invest in one of their models. I see they have a Strat model. One tone, one volume pot with DiMarzios. It looks fantastic. A neat addition would be an old three way switch. For some reason I would like to try a Strat style with just very basic tone selections. Very enjoyable video. Looking forward to the next review that was listed in the description.
Pretty nice. I'll keep my Crafted In USA Predator DX (Turbo). This was '96 and the shop had about 10 at the time. $199 ! One I wanted on a second trip was gone but beautiful birds eye maple finger board example was the one. Needs a 5 way, other wise Kick ASS axe.
Wow, nice guitar! That price is unbelievably good. Its USA made, materials seem high quality and you even get customization too. This is a good example that something like this doesnt need to cost 2500$. Maybe this is a good new Video topic like "Should premium guitars be cheaper?" I dont want to rant here but....cheap guitars can qualitywise really hold up to midrange guitars in the last years. Midrange guitars stay where they ever were, although the cheap ones give you more in relation to the money. And then theres the premium guitars that charge 3000+ or something. A week ago I was in a guitar store and in the custom section somebody comes in with 3 sellers! and a coffee, basically kicking me out gently, because he wanted to test some "special wines" in private. Bye bye beloved PRS. Thats not good! I think premium guitars shouldnt cost that much anymore. Manufacturers put them in CNC routing machines like everyone else. They spray over it in minutes or with robots like everyone else. Putting stainless steel frets in is not that much more expensive than good Nickel ones, but if I want them I have to spend 4 months of wage. Yesterday I saw that Harley Benton sells an acoustic for 150$ with bone nuts and saddle. Yet if you buy a Martin or Taylor you dont even get a bone saddle everytime? It cant be that expensive if HB does it. A high class PRS has the price of a freaking car and some of them dont even have locking tuners from the factory. Whats going on here? Manufacturers basically adopt the smartphone selling concept, where tiny little improvements are intentionally hold back to a certain pricepoint and then sold for thousants of dollars. We live in 2020! Technology has evolved and so did the manufacturing. It doenst need to be like that anymore UNLESS its about greed. Every once in a while a guitar pops up that shows this, like this one.
Nice Upgrade Vid Phil! Do you feel the Les Trem Tremolo to be very touchy? I put one on my Gretsch and it’s really touchy. Doesn’t take much pressure to move it at all. Do you know of a fix so as to make it less touchy? Thanks Sir. Please keep up the Good Work! Love your Channel and Content! Cheers from Salem, Ohio.
Great guitar nice people in their store in Statesboro I’ve spoken to chris on several occasions when I bought mine I was blown away until he said play this one and was even more blown away
Love you videos, man! It's good to see some new stuff being posted. Also, thank you very much for that nice discovery! Can you review an Eastman LP type guitar someday? I've tried on Eastman last weekend at my local shop. It was amazing to play, but I wanna have you opinion on them 😊👍
love these videos Phillip, cool mod that worked real well for that specific guitar, I've used the toothpick trick for so many mods over the years and is so easy to do and works perfectly. would love to see a bone nut mod on a strat and how to cut nut slots without the $150 japanese file saws available, I'm trying cheap way first with the key ring sets that are so small your fingers cant hold the files properly so I thought a jewellers adjustable saw and am going to see how that works but I was wondering if you know a way it can be done properly for under $100 because it is an important part of tone and tuning stability, you don't want to get it wrong but you dont want to buy the expensive saw files to do the job once or twice in a lifetime on a guitar your modding with the bone nut. cheers mate.
Do you have any links for those Tuners & Trem? I've got a really neck heavy SG that has those Grover tuners and I'd love to try whatever you're using in this video on it. I'm thinking the metal bracket system will probably work on the SG as it probably has a more "standard" headstock than the custom one you have with the extra wood inlay on top.
Phil, Is there a possibility that the new Tremolo would have balanced the guitar without removing the old Grovers? I think I may have installed the trem first, then added the tuners only if it was necessary. What do you think?
If you call Hipshot they will send you longer nuts that will enable you to use the UMP. They do not offer them for sale but will send them to you if you need them.
I'm just thinking this brand might be a good option to consider for little dudes/dudettes who are interested in a hollowbody, but find the size of a typical Gretsch (or similar instruments) to be rather cumbersome.
So as a beginner I was going to get a modelling amp like the VOX VT20X and I want to get used to pedals later on and especially I want to use a looping pedal later on. But I was told to get an amp with an FX Loop?? Because if I wanna loop a part of the song with a clean tone and use a distorted tone afterwards everything is going to be distorted??? Can you please tell me(us beginners) what to look after while purchasing a modelling amp and how an FX Loop works? And keep in mind the price range please! (or can anyone else in chat help, phils viewers seem to be well educated! thx!) In the meantime I will try to collect more information on that topic! Ty in advance and sorry for my english!
how do these compare to other companies' single cuts? I have a Gibson LP Classic in ebony that I love but I want something with a nice top on it. I would like to have some variety so I was thinking FGN, Greco, Bacchus, LTD/ESP but honestly a guitar built in the south is more attractive (I'm in North Carolina)
Hi Philip. Regarding that bridge, its definitely very easy to install, and I'm considering buying one for a Les Paul. But, I just though, if it's that easy to instal, do you consider it reliable tuning-wise for gigs?
Hi Philip, Hope all is well. I love watching your videos. They are very interesting and informative. Thank you!! My question is Do you plan on doing another set of sharpen my axe series. I have a rare Ibanez Ex1700 . Thanks
hey phillip .. thanks for sharing... i've recommended in the last month or so5 or 6 people to check out your website for hot to change stringsfor their first guitar.

I have the solid body version of this guitar. It is a fantastic guitar. And Chris (the owner) is a great guy.
Nice shoutout to RNA. They are right down the road from me and are some very nice folks. :-)
I recently bought an Ashley semi-hollow and love it. Very sweet sounding with the import FrogDog pickups.
Unbelievable what you can learn in 10 minutes. Always grateful for the shared knowledge!
Very cool to shout out RNA. All class.
Love my CMG in Statesboro Blue! I just put on locking tuners on mine .
Love my CMG Ashlee - it's a solid body and about 10 pounds - neck dive NOT an issue..... One of the few guitars I own that I have never considered modding or upgrading. It just doesn't need it. (it did come with the Dimarzio 36 Anniversary PAF pickup option).
sounds better than a gibson

Nice work, Phil! I will be doing some exploring on the CMG and RNA websites!
RNA also has a RUclips channel, if you would like to check that out
They also do some cool tube amps with competitive prices, they are called Devil Cat if I am not wrong.
WalkenDead1369 thank you sir!
@@RNAMusic I'll give you guys promo's whenever I get the chance!
Chris at CMG custom made me an Ashlee out of Walnut my grandfather cut on Brays Island Plantaion in SC in the 1950's. It is a beutiful awesome guitar that has walnut neck and body. I love CMG...funny enough I did the same mods myself a couple of years ago to my Ashlee
I put that Vibrato on one of my LTD 1000. It is all the difference in the world. Love it!
Loving that tone! Great work as always, Phil 🙌
I bought my Ashlee (#76) from a small dealer in WV. It had a spalted maple top and DiMarzio pickups. A killer guitar

Bought a 2018 Gibson SG Standard for 800 bucks last week! The times we live in!
Sharpen my axe is probably my favorite series by Phil. I can watch an episode 20 times and I never get tired of it.
Wow Phil, you've really upped your editing lately! It wasn't anything bad before, but now it's really amazing and matches your expertise. Great video as always!

Great video . I would have checked first if it would balance with the heaviest bridge before putting on the hipshot tuners

I was proud to see finally I sharpen my ax again
Looks like a refined Parker fly mojo behind you. I just sold my 05 fly deluxe. Had it almost 15 years to the day
changing the pots would be a massive upgrade to this guitar IMO. Think it would add to the top end which seemed to lack a bit
Fantastic video, Phil. Very helpful insights and great tips

Nice guitar and overview of the upgrades
I use graph tech ratio locking tuners on my Gibson lp
As always informative &, entertaining !! Love that term system !! Much better looking & easier to install than a Bigsby !!
Nice Upgrade Vid Phil! Do you feel the Les Trem Tremolo to be very touchy? I put one on my Gretsch and it’s really touchy. Doesn’t take much pressure to move it at all. Great guitar nice people in their store in Statesboro I’ve spoken to chris on several occasions when I bought mine I was blown away until he said play this one and was even more blown away
and... now the song is stuck in my head.. it came out so nicely :)
That’s a super interesting idea hollowing it all out. Wonder if it would have issues with feedback at higher gain 🤔
A little, but less than if it had the F holes.
I got one of the first 100 they made. Love this guitar.
Love you videos, man! It's good to see some new stuff being posted.

Your walls are pretty full, my friend... time for more walls!
Is it just me, or does there appear to be a crack in the headstock, where it meets the neck? 1:04
Good to see a guitar being made in the U.S.. I like these, but I like the PRS S2 Satin models even more as a budget USA guitar ($1k).
Took the tremolo right off your sg hanging om the wall at the beginning of the video! Hahaha way to churn em out phil!
Welcome to covid times.
Great job Phil. Very nice video 👏👏👏
Do you have any links for those Tuners & Trem? I've got a really neck heavy SG that has those Grover tuners and I'd love to try whatever you're using in this video on it. Hi Phillip can you please review the Fender Blacktop Stratocaster HH MIM
Phil, Is there a possibility that the new Tremolo would have balanced the guitar without removing the old Grovers? I think I may have installed the trem first, then added the tuners only if it was necessary. What do you think?
Maybe, it is just barley not neck heavy after the mods. I would still install locking keys anyway
If you call Hipshot they will send you longer nuts that will enable you to use the UMP. They do not offer them for sale but will send them to you if you need them.
Mr. McNight would you please someday talk about Jatoba fretboards that so many guitars are being made with? I’ve learned so much with you. Thank you.
I'm just thinking this brand might be a good option to consider for little dudes/dudettes who are interested in a hollowbody, but find the size of a typical Gretsch (or similar instruments) to be rather cumbersome.
What was the trem. system called! Very kool!

I just kept thinking the trem was going to cave in the hollow body. Is there a block under the pickup and trem area?
Phil , what kind of bridge is on it ? I swapped out all my Gibson's for Faber's and it makes a difference .
Hi Philip. Regarding that bridge, its definitely very easy to install, and I'm considering buying one for a Les Paul. But, I just though, if it's that easy to instal, do you consider it reliable tuning-wise for gigs?
These are really interesting videos! Keep up the great work
Oh man, I got excited for a minute thinking I already knew this guitar. 😉. Super cool regardless. Love SMA.
Cheers from NY! Thanks for the vid Phil, much enjoyed! :-)
Another excellent video Phil!
Hi Philip,
Hope all is well.
I love watching your videos. They are very interesting and informative.
Thank you!!
My question is
Do you plan on doing another set of sharpen my axe series.
I have a rare Ibanez Ex1700 .
Thanks
Fantastic work, you've got the wisdom
NICE axe! You did a good job on it Phil!
hey phillip .. thanks for sharing... i've recommended in the last month or so5 or 6 people to check out your website for hot to change stringsfor their first guitar.
Interesting brand. I'll have to check them out.
Didn't Peavey make their necks two piece like that? I know a Peavey Mystic I had was made like that
Phil, do you know if hipshot makes a UMP plate for 7 string kits yet?
I wonder if just changing the bridge would have solved the neck diving problem. Anyhow, nice guitar.
I love this series ❤. Do you still do these??
Hey Phil, have you sharpened an offset with Firebird pickups?
Now Phil, check out their Devilcat amps!
I hear good things.
hey Phil thank you again for another cool informative video. I just wanted to come and I never realized that tune them tags were so heavy what could be so have a yeah kind of surprised you had mentioned in the past you know how you like to change Sooners and part of it was for you know how much they weigh and I was always like that how much katonah this way you know it's got to be crazy but yeah I believe it now LOL sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom
Question Phil, you’ve had the Spark amp for a while. Do you think it is a good beginner amp? Thanks
I love this kind of video! Great job and thanks!
That's just a cool guitar. But that tremolo I have not seen before. That's great.
Yeeeees. I love that this series is back.
rna is a great channel.
I just bought a artic white Vintage guitars company 3 pickup les paul custom copy vs100 or something and I'm confused with the pickups i think maybe somethi gs not working its definitely not two volume and tone knobs does anyone know about this guitar?
Awesome guitar and mods!
Thanks for taking a CMG for a spin. They’re in my region and was wondering about their sound. Just curious, Why didn’t you install the tremolo, first, then check the balance? You could have kept the original tuning keys.
I love this man
So is that CMG Hollow or Semi-Hollow? And that is one weird-looking trem.
I'm a CMG fan. Really good stuff.
