Canadian North Airlines - 737 300 - Yellowknife (YZF) to Edmonton (YEG) | TRIP REPORT

  • Canadian North Airlines is an Inuit-owned airline flying up in Canada's Northwest Territories and Nunavut, connecting some of the country's most remote towns to the world. Its merger with First Air in 2019 established the combined fleet as one of Canada's largest airlines. Ticket prices are known to be outrageous, and in a way, the airline has a monopoly on Arctic transportation because most towns aren't accessible by road, rail, or even boat. If you want to visit or leave these Northern towns, you must fly.
I was supposed to fly on the 737-200 Combi (the aircraft is half cargo pallets, half passenger seats), but mechanical issues saw the flight downgrade to an ATR 42 and a 7-hour delay. I'll return to Yellowknife in a couple of months to give it another crack!
Yellowknife is the capital and largest city in the Northwest Territories with a population of 20,000 residents. Industry includes diamond mining, transportation, northern lights tourism, and communications. The airport is a hub for Canadian North along with Adlair Aviation, Air Tindi, Buffalo Airways, Northwestern Air, North-Wright Airways, and Summit Air. Destinations for Canadian North from Yellowknife are Cambridge Bay, Edmonton, Fort Simpson, Gjoa Haven, Hay River, Inuvik, Iqaluit, Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk, Norman Wells, Rankin Inlet, Taloyoak, and Ulukhaktok.
I enjoyed the actual onboard product during the flight! They served a complimentary meal and drinks (included in all fares) and the crew members are always extremely nice!

I watch this type of flight video from many different posters and I have to say yours really stand out, for two main reasons. One is that you so often fly little known airlines to or from obscure destinations; there's little anyone can do at this point to make a Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to London or a United from LAX to Atlanta particularly interesting. Even if your videos weren't very good they'd be worth watching just to see cities or airports or airlines we can't see elsewhere. But your videos ARE good. Your photography is outstanding. The trip to the airport, the area around the airport, and the scenery out the window add a great deal to your videos, something that a lot of posters overlook. Seeing the meal and comparing restrooms pale after a while. (Happily you no longer feel obligated to show us both sides of the airsickness bag!) Your videos were never bad, but they've gotten even better and continue to improve--this was one of your best (Those Northern lights!). Congratulations and keep up the good work. Thank you.

As a person who has almost crossed late middle age and is living far away from Canada, I welcome and appreciate all vlogs that show places where I will most probably never visit in my life...even though a part of me always wants to. I know I will never go to Yellowknife, board a plane without bus or a jet bridge in deep winter in brutally cold weather, feel the wind and cold bring tears to my eyes, truly savour a hot cup of coffee inside the aircraft as it flies over the snow laden ground...but here I can - through your wonderful vlogs as you travel to all the out of the way places. So, thank you thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making me see all of the unseen and unknown places. You make my imagination take wings.

The Northern Lights are one of those optical mysteries that I will never tire of watching. Could stay up all night watching them. I'm quite surprised you got a meal on a 90 minute flight... and a hot one at that! I was in Yellowknife as a kid (9/10yrs old?) with my dad for his work and flew in the back of a 4 seater -- almost froze to death. The people in Yellowknife were nice and it is amazing place to visit.

I have to admit tho I was laughing when you said this cabin looks like a Time Machine from your childhood in the mid 2000s lol that was like 10 years ago😂😂 I was born in 86 so ten years ago for me feels like yesterday 😅 on another note I think they actually kept this plane in better than mediocre shape it looks very clean and well kept for being built in 98 Also would like to add your seat on the wing was awesome for taking shots during flight!
