The final Canadian North 737-200 flight

  • For decades the 737-200 Combi has served Canada's Arctic territories thanks to its versatility and short-field performance. The aircraft was state-of-the-art in the late 1960s and they operated regularly scheduled passenger flights throughout the millennium. As the jets continue to age, more and more disappear to the scrap yard as the jet becomes pricier to upkeep.
I had been trying to experience Canadian North's last 737-200 aircraft for years now, and when I found out that May 6 was the final retirement flight, I knew I had to be there!
Something unique about the 737-200 is its gravel-kit modifications allowing the jet to land in small rural communities with only gravel runways. The Combi configuration also allows the aircraft to carry half passengers and half cargo. The -200s are still in operation with Nolinor Åviation and Air Inuit, both based in Quebec. Canadian North's -200s were in slightly worse condition though, as the jet we flew on had four recorded inflight engine failure incidents within the last decade. 43-years-old is extremely old for an aircraft, especially one carrying passengers in harsh conditions.
Canadian North will replace the 737-200 on the Yellowknife-Cambridge Bay-Kuglutuk-Yellowknife route with ATR-42s.

It's sad everytime the industry loses a unique and rare jet. But the 737-200 is still flying in Quebec with Air Inuit and Nolinor for the near future!

@@QFSAviationjust for some info, Air inuit has plans to retire their -200 fleet by 2025, however Chrono and Nolinor have no such plans (at least that i could find) and Nolinor specifically says they're likely keeping their -200 fleet into the 2030s.

My first flight on a 737 -200 was back in the late '60s when I was still a pre-teen. Today I am 65 so it is amazing that this jet made it this far. One thing that I have always felt looked better on the -200 vs "Next Gen" was the tail fin. IMO the tail was more elegant looking than that of the "Next Gen" 737's. I still have vivid memories of sitting behind the wing and watching those clam-shell thrust reversers go into action on touchdown. Great video!

That was excellent. I watched the entire video with fascination (even though I'm supposed to be studying!). I moved to Canada in '79 as a young teenager with my family, so may have flown on this a/c when she was with PWA or Canadian. Thanks for sourcing all those fantastic historic photos of the plane when she was wearing different liveries, I haven't seen many other RUclipsrs do that before. That was sure lucky the passenger in front of you didn't recline his seat - one of the reasons I don't fly anymore. I'm 6'3 and can't afford first class! Looking forward to future adventures. I think if you flew for 43 years you would need some maintenance as well, so to call such a great plane a nuisance and unreliable I don't think is fair. She has served the Canadian greatly for many years and she did it still safely. She will always be remembered as a great bird from another time in the golden time of aviation.

Hope you got an opportunity to chat with him…sad beyond belief to see the last vestiges of the 200 starting to fade, but what a run. Thank you for sharing the 200 combi is such a classic and important piece of aviation history! And it is a BEAUTIFUL aircraft! I’ve always wanted to fly on one and travel to the Canadian north this past flight is a true gift to all on board. Those classic narrow Pratt and Whitney low bypass JT8D engines look so good imo but of course their efficiency is unfortunately very outdated. Nonetheless amazing aircraft!
