I am a hyundai technician, just a little heads up. There is a warranty extension for this coupler, to 100,000 miles. Also, there’s no reason to remove the cluster or the smart junction box (fuse box). Just remove the two 12mm bolts and two 12mm nuts to drop the steering column. Way easier and faster. Take care.

RealTechReview hello I have Hyundai Elantra 2007 gls electric assist rack pinion and I have the same sound ..is it rack problem or this coupler and how I can do it pls ?
Oh my... Thank you x 5 gazillion. You have saved my sanity because that noise has been driving me insane for a little over a month with every bump in the road and every turn of the steering wheel. I've had someone tell me the steering column needed to potentially be replaced to fix the issue. That I'm sure is not cheap repair. I was actually lurking the Veloster Forum for the fitment size for dual transmission gear shift knob for 2013 Base model when I coincidentally ran across a reply that shared the link to your video. So freaking stoked that I clicked on that link. My husband will be in total disbelief when I hand him the part in a couple of days, share this video with him & tell him all he has to do is replace this one small part on my Veloster to make me the (even more so) happiest wife in the world. I've already done the most difficult part.... Identifying the problem & ordering the correct part, of course you really deserve all of the credit. So again thank you for taking the time to create informative videos that make auto repairs easier for those of us that aren't (auto) mechanically inclined but can follow well given instructions. Can't donate a whole lot right now but hopefully every little bit will help.
I finally took the time to go for it yesterday, and everything worked out great. That aggravating clattering noise I used to get when I went over bumps is gone, and steering feels firm. It might have been easier if I’d dropped the steering column, but I wanted to avoid the potential issues others have had with that. So, I followed this video's process. It took some work and persistence, but I’m glad I did it this way. It took me an hour and 45 minutes, a little sweat and $1.20 for the part. Thanks to everybody who contributed info and advice on this!

Love these “do it yourself” videos. My 2013 Elantra had same problem. Hyundai said it was NOT covered. Your video points out a few “hidden” screws I would have missed, and I would never have known about the torque 30 tool needed until after you have dropped the steering column! My Elantra has adjustable steering column so it was a little different at back. One large bolt the column pivots on. The “hook” is in back. Unbolting the fuse box helps you get to the motor easier, but I did NOT unplug anything. You don’t need to. The less you disturb the better! Don’t forget to center the wheel BEFORE disconnecting the battery. Thanks again you saved me $350
This is a long shot but if you happen to read this: Any chance you can go into more detail on the last bolt that lets it drop in your model? I have the same model and it doesn’t drop all the way like in this video but I think I saw the bolt you’re talking about when I was under there. I was too worried to remove it though.
Thank you brother! We just bought a car from an auction and we had the same clunking going on. It's funny because I'm driving back from the auction house upset about this and I'm watching your video in the car and I couldn't tell if it was the car clunking or your video at the beginning and that's when I knew 🤣🤣🤣
Great video, and very helpful comments from others. My daughter owned 2, 2011 and 2014 Sonata Sedans. Both vehicles had this issue after about 90K miles and 110K miles. Hyundai covering the costs of this repair for vehicles under warranty up to 10 years after purchase or 100K miles is negligent. 100K miles is sparse on today's cars that can easily have well over 200K miles with proper maintenance.
Thanks for this vid (though the deconstruction just to get to the failed part made my head swim!). BUT also thanks for the comments that this part is apparently covered by the 100K warranty! I have a 2013 Elantra GT hatch that has a bit of play/"ka chunk" sound in the steering column, so I'm gonna check with the dealer ASAP!
You knowi have a kia rio 2015 and it has a clicking sound every time the car vibrates bcos of tye road and the noise came from d steering column. The casa charged me 90thousand pesos for the entire replacement of the steering column. Good thing i saw your video. More blessings to you dude.

Did it myself overall. Good advice on your method but the screw we had to deal with on the motor was stripped from manufactures. Took a little longer but fixed.
I did mine a few weeks ago all by myself. I have to drop the whole steering assembly to gain an easy access to the motor. You will also need a jack to assist you in lifting the steering assembly to its original mounting spot. It was well worth my time to replace a $3.00 part.
OMG! Thank you very much for this video! I just failed inspection for this clicking sound......I am about to take my Kia to the dealership if this is a recall part.

My 2012 Elantra allowed me to complete 90% of the disassembly as shown in the video....however, the steering column refused to drop to the seat level...... the motor part hindered by a cross a/c conduit piping running horizontal behind the instrument panel. So Hyundai/Kia move the bulk of the steering torque from inside the rack and pinion itself (hydraulic system) to up on top of the steering column? Imagine a super strong armed guy moving the steering wheel without any power assist at the rack and pinion. Whom ever tried to rotate wheels with engine off (key in lock to prevent locking the column) knows what I am talking about. And Hyundai/Kia didn't resize anything for this 10x higher torque... Just added a puny piece of rubber in there. What can go wrong? Ah, and this change from tested and tried hydraulics to electric was done just to gain probably some 0.1 gallon per mile on gas mileage.
Could not unfasten those 2 top bolts on the fuse box. Doesn’t seem clear from this video on how to do it either at least in my 2013 veloster. Think I’d need a special tool. Dropping steering column tomorrow and am close, but just suffice to say..anyone attempting this that hasn’t done this kind of work like me this has taken 4+ hrs so far.
Hi - I got a mobile mechanic to fix this for me. Now my EPS light is on. Does anyone know why this might be. Someone told me it could be because he did not reprogram it. Any suggestions. Thanks so much in advance
heath ogle hmm never experienced that before. I would look for codes and see if they can get cleared. Did you put everything back the way you removed it
I appreciate you offering your insight but there was no way I was able to reach those torx screws on the motor. I had to drop the steering column like the Hyundai technician guy said on my 2011 sonata se.. it was much easier doing that and there was no issue with steering column alignment and sensors as previous comments mentioned. it was actually quite easy getting everything reassembled . I only wish you had shown how you were able to unscrew the 3rd torx screw doing it your way and what kind of torx tool you used. I had an L style torx and a ssd socket / ratchet style... neither of which would reach and properly seat on the torx screw .... I couldn't figure out how you removed it your way. thanks for your video .I wish it had worked for me
am not sure if mine has the same problem its not this loud and i can feel it when i touch the tires and have someone swing the steering could this be the same issue before i begin to tear down the steering thanks guys for any contribution
What is this piece called? My daughter has a 2012 Hyundai Ellantra GLS and has the same problem when she turns her steering wheel. I’m trying to get prices but I want to know what the piece is called and where to change it. Do I change it in the motor or do I change it in the steering wheel?
I have an Elantra and I have the exact same problem and was told it was my intermediate shaft and and I replaced it for nothing... Ok my question is would I need to align the column or steering or something when replacing the coupler and do I need any special tools?
just make sure when doing the job to not rotate the steering wheel full turns when its off. and for tools what makes the job easier is having smaller hands and arms. no special tools needed
I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata having ~98,000 miles with clunk steering noise. Would this be same part? If Hyundai will replace it under warranty, great, otherwise I know I will be replacing it during my vacation week in October...
Definitely have this issue with my 2012. I also have a slight front tire shake when driving above 60mph. The shake gets worse above 75 so I tend to ease off on the pedal when it does. It's also way more noticeable in temperatures above 30 degrees F. At first I thought it was due to unbalanced tires, but now I'm not so sure. Could this one flexible coupling cause both issues?
I had shaking when going over 60mph and it was because I needed a mount and balance along with a wheel alignment. That fixed the shaking whEn going over 60mph but there’s still a steering shaking problem when turning the wheel and going over bumps so it’s a separate issue.
I just wanted to ask can you get that part anywhere or just at the dealership? I have a 2011 Sonata with 170,000 miles and only started hearing it over bumps or rough road and clicking in the steering about two moths ago . I would like to get it fixed somewhere other than the dealership.
I have the same clunking noise in my steering wheel when i turn it left to right on my 2011 KiA Optima so i know this part is what i need. Question: i also have a very bad vibration in the steering column when i hit any bumps or potholes when i'm driving. Is this vibration because of the same worn part or is there something else i need to look for while i have all of this torn down?
Hi, Oz. Thanks for this video. Like VALMER LYNN, my Sonata needs this part replaced, AND my Sonata starts to vibrate right about 60mps. Is it more likely the vibrations caused this part to fail, or the failed part caused the vibrations? Guess I'll find out when I get it fixed.
Hi i have a 2013 kia sorento and kinda of have the same problem my steering wheel shaking bad on a bump and vibrates while driving already have the suspension replace all new tires and joints plus the tie rods still have the same problem cant pinpoint the cause of it is this the same problem? Thankyou
@@kevinjohnson1958 go for it, its not that difficult, bit short of space but I got there in the end with very limited tools and the rubber part for less than £10 on eBay. Couldn't find a garage that would do it, they all wanted to replace the entire column. Best of luck to you
We buy a 2013 use sonata and we have the same problem, many comments say it’s under warranty if under 100000k wish we had 75k on it , any Hyundai dealers would fixed for fee?we get the car from a local dealer who actually go out of business a few after wee get the car
Jason White I would call your dealer and give them your vin number and see if they offer that part for your vehicle. If they do then it is the same application.
Yes this part is available. I was just checking to see if I could replace it without pulling the steering column down all the way like in the video. The video is very helpful btw. Thanks for the repair info and your timely response.
Jason White if you have less than 100,000 miles, it can be replaced for free under the extended warranty Hyundai offers; 10 years 100,000 miles. Contact your local dealer to find out.
Hyundai purposely use such fragile material to force every owner back to their workshop for replacement every 4-5 years? If not, why there is no recall even they knew this part is vulnerable?

Thanka for the video! Is it urgent to fix it! I mean could Something bad happen if not fixed?
Just followed your steps and went great , but now the esc off light is on and the esc motor makes a loud whinning noise when you turn the wheel. Help
heath ogle hmm never experienced that before. I would look for codes and see if they can get cleared. Did you put everything back the way you removed it
i just did mine two days ago. each wire/ plug has different design, so impossible to make a mistake. unless you left some wires unplugged.
Hi Oz, i have Kia Sorento 2013, having quite similar with your but i hear knocking only on non flat road. Would it be the same material problem?
I couldn't figure out how you removed it your way. thanks for your video .I wish it had worked for me
I found the same, had to take the column out but ultimately not many bolts and went back easily enough and I'm not great with mechanic stuff.
am not sure if mine has the same problem its not this loud and i can feel it when i touch the tires and have someone swing the steering could this be the same issue before i begin to tear down the steering thanks guys for any contribution
How detrimental is this issue?as in how many days before it's a must be done issue
Hello is it going to be same part for a 2015 Hyundai Sonata?
What were all the tools you used in this video? Is a torque wrench necessary? I just wanted to make sure I have them all before getting started
What is this piece called? My daughter has a 2012 Hyundai Ellantra GLS and has the same problem when she turns her steering wheel. I’m trying to get prices but I want to know what the piece is called and where to change it. Do I change it in the motor or do I change it in the steering wheel?
Steering coupler.
Where are you located? I have a Hyundai Santa Fe 2013 limited and has the same problem how can I tell the dealership it has the same problem
Alex Vargas I’m in Pasadena tx just off of Houston
What is the name of this part so I can order for my 2013 elantra
Steering gear coupler
Hi,
How can you be sure if the fault is in 2 parts on this Video
As many treads on Google saying ,
Steering rack or column have to be replaced.
Its the coupling
Does this rubber work in a 2015 kia forte k3?
I have an Elantra and I have the exact same problem and was told it was my intermediate shaft and and I replaced it for nothing... Ok my question is would I need to align the column or steering or something when replacing the coupler and do I need any special tools?
just make sure when doing the job to not rotate the steering wheel full turns when its off. and for tools what makes the job easier is having smaller hands and arms. no special tools needed
Hello. Is this product valid for the Hyundai i10 GLS car?
how much was this done for parts and labor? my car is having this same issue.
Could this one flexible coupling cause both issues?
put your front tires on the rear and see what changes
I had shaking when going over 60mph and it was because I needed a mount and balance along with a wheel alignment. That fixed the shaking whEn going over 60mph but there’s still a steering shaking problem when turning the wheel and going over bumps so it’s a separate issue.
How long does it last after the replacement? Was this element upgraded or you installed identical one? European Kia Ceed 2009 here.
Great video, thanks for taking the time to make it!!
MrModus no problem. Thank you for watching
I just wanted to ask can you get that part anywhere or just at the dealership? I have a 2011 Sonata with 170,000 miles and only started hearing it over bumps or rough road and clicking in the steering about two moths ago . I would like to get it fixed somewhere other than the dealership.
Lovejazz01 just at the dealership
Oz Mechanics ok thanks ..
Yep that little part causes the vibration as well
Would it be same issue on an Accent blue 2012? I hear the noise coming mor from under the motor but I am no expert so..
Oscar Brenes does the noise come from inside the cab or outside in the engine compartment?
What is the technical name of the part or the job that's being done?
Steering coupler
Thanks for this video, I am having this problem and thought it was the tie rods or the rack and pinion assembly.
Can not fixing this cause any greater damage to the motor etc?? I have both esc and eps lights are on
Ashley Salas You likely have other problems as well: the steering angle sensor for example.
Great DIY thanks!... But I'll spend the extra $$$ at the dealership to replace it if necessary.
Hi Oz Mechanics! For a Kia Cee'd 2010 1.6, 98W, running on gs, what is the code for the flexible coupler? is it the same Part # 563152K000FFF?
Adrian Onucu Oh exactly same model for me and exactly same problem. Did you find the part?
@@redigjata3905 aparently the part code is the same. I will tell you more once I receive it and replace it
Hi i have a 2013 kia sorento and kinda of have the same problem my steering wheel shaking bad on a bump and vibrates while driving already have the suspension replace all new tires and joints plus the tie rods still have the same problem cant pinpoint the cause of it is this the same problem? Thankyou
@Raul Garcia, have you solved the issue by changing the steering coupler?
great information, any feed for a 2017 sonata model?
Mate what happens if you dont replace this asap, cheers
Thanks a lot for this video coz mine have the same problem
No problem hope you get the problem fixed
I just got that problem
I did this repair on a 2010 Kia pro ceed. Easy fix
Not too bad to do
@@OzMechanics no and it was the first mechanical job I've done in over 10 years
I also need to do this on my 09 Pro Ceed.
@@kevinjohnson1958 go for it, its not that difficult, bit short of space but I got there in the end with very limited tools and the rubber part for less than £10 on eBay. Couldn't find a garage that would do it, they all wanted to replace the entire column. Best of luck to you
What is the part number for a Kia Optima hybrid 2011?
We buy a 2013 use sonata and we have the same problem, many comments say it’s under warranty if under 100000k wish we had 75k on it , any Hyundai dealers would fixed for fee?we get the car from a local dealer who actually go out of business a few after wee get the car
What about Kia forte, same issue
what kind of damage can be done as well if left untreated
Marissa Valles just the annoying clunk
how much would it cost to get it repaired. I have a 2012 kia forte. I am not covered because I am at 208k miles
Its a recall. Go after them.
how it will cost repair like this problem in the steering
Does the same process apply to a 2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited?
Jason White I would call your dealer and give them your vin number and see if they offer that part for your vehicle. If they do then it is the same application.
Yes this part is available. I was just checking to see if I could replace it without pulling the steering column down all the way like in the video. The video is very helpful btw. Thanks for the repair info and your timely response.
Jason White I didn't pull it all the way down. I kept one bolt on to help screwing it back
Yea that's what I meant just worded wrong. Gonna replace mine soon, let you know how it goes. This video is very helpful. Thanks again.
Jason White if you have less than 100,000 miles, it can be replaced for free under the extended warranty Hyundai offers; 10 years 100,000 miles. Contact your local dealer to find out.
Mine is a 2011 with 126 k on it and it just started. Anyone have the link to purchase the cupeling
from where did you fine the plastic wheel , from wich site.
Ahmed scear I bought the plastic piece from the dealership
Ahmed scear I've seen them on ebay for $8
Really well done...Thanks
I have a 2013 kia optima and my steering wheel rattles when I'm going 50 or higher and also have the clicking noise is this this cause of it ?
shawna polite get you wheels and tires rotated and balanced
Hyundai purposely use such fragile material to force every owner back to their workshop for replacement every 4-5 years?
If not, why there is no recall even they knew this part is vulnerable?
Theres a 100,000 warranty on this
Because it works! My Kia dealer told us that many people are trading in due to this issue!
Hi do you have the hyundai part number
56315-2K000-FFF
What happens if you don't change it
What I know about it, is that you just hear that annoying noise
