This is one of the very few interviews where someone made a conscious effort to interview Bon Scott before he got smashed and got him to answer some serious questions. You will see a link to another video at the end of this one, of Bon Scott in Hobart, Australia in the same year as this one. Take the time to watch it, and you can see why Meldrum is keen to keep this interview serious and on topic.
As has been pointed out previously, Scott and Meldrum have known each other for a long time, going back to the days of the Valentines in 1966-70. There is a link below to Meldrum speaking about Scott's death on Countdown.
• Molly Meldrum tribute ...
If you are NOT from Australia, please note :
Rush are NOT known in Australia, not then and not now. Rush never released anything in Australia and have never had a song or album in the Australian charts, ever. Kiss were not a household name in Australia until 1979 with the release of the Dynasty album. "Rock n Roll All Night" made the top 20 in 1975, but we didn't really have much to do with them or see them on TV until 1979. Kiss did not tour Australia until 1980, at which time Meldrum and Countdown ran an entire Kiss episode of Countdown. Note : this interview is in 1977, not the current day. Take the above paragraph in to account if commenting.
Meldrum and the Australian television show Countdown were one of AC/DC's biggest backers in the 70's. Meldrum and Countdown made 2 videos for AC/DC, "Jailbreak" and two versions of "It's a Long Way To The Top" which helped to make AC/DC a household name in Australia many years before their worldwide success. If you own any of the AC/DC videos such as Family Jewells or Plug Me In, you will also see AC/DC on Countdown performing "Baby Please Don't Go", "TNT", "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", "Dog Eat Dog", as well as the previously mentioned videos that Countdown made off set. Corporate boffins taped over almost all Countdown episodes from the 70's, so we are extremely lucky 2 individuals did their best behind the scenes to hide tapes, however many AC/DC performances were lost.
Meldrum and Countdown generated breakthrough Australian hits for international artists including ABBA, Meat Loaf, Blondie, Boz Scaggs, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, and Michael Jackson before they got famous and some only got famous because of Countdown. Meldrum and Countdown were early pioneers of music videos, see the 1974-1980 section of this link en.wikipedia.o...

He's such an awesome guy who makes sure he doesn't say anything negative about former mates or other people. Sad he died so young.
He lived the life he wanted to live nothing sad about being true to yourself! He lived his dream!
He "Was"
And people say Freddie Mercury died young
Sad that he didn't get to see the riches of his songs and of course, all the money he would've had
Truely was still miss him
Not heard him speak before, his mischievous nature is clearly there, but he was an intelligent, coherent speaker. Such a sad, sad loss.
Same here: first time hearing him simply talking, and I got the same impression as yourself. No wonder he had no shortage of people clamoring to hang out & party with him. Very engaging personality, very intelligent and a great sense of humor
A real larican
Bon Scott always came across a such a warm guy, you just couldn't help but like him.
Well he is Scottish so,,just like all of us here 👌🏴♥️🏴♥️🏴
Yes he looks so Scottish to me, lovely man he was
Dude is literally one the most talented singers to ever walk this earth
him and Ronnie James Dio and Freddie Mercury
Imagine going to a concert and seeing Kiss, Rush and AC DC in their prime. Jesus Christ.
damn you elderly people! * shakes fist at old people *
:D
@@R4Y2k Settle down you whipper snapper you
Im 56 and watched all 3 bands live in their prime all 3 completely different than each other, but 3 iconic, bands of all time, miss Bon everyday RIP,
AC/DC, Judas Priest, KISS, Cheap Trick, etc....yea dude It was awesome!
Saw 2 out of 3, Kiss was just before my time
He just is a nice guy, honest and very intelligent in his comments on rock & roll. We lost a real icon. R.I.P. Bon!
What a loss isn't it?!
When Bon said 'we ain't changing for anybody', that's an indication of how smart he was. Everyone these days are as stupid as bowling balls since they'd say, 'we ain't changing for nobody'. That shows a lack of intelligence & a poor command of the English language. Bon was a very intelligent & articulate talker.
Love his heart🌠🥁
God speed Bon, you were a great man... this interviewer is a dick and looking for an ass kicking...
When I listen to AC/DC , my neighborhood listens too
I wish he could’ve known we would be watching this and listening to his music in 2019.
Eric Price I think when he made the big time he knew his music was eternity 👌
I'd like to believe he does
It jus' showed up. I listened to some old songs of theirs. A list was created. And then this interview showed up. I pressed like. We'll see what happens next. More will show up I reckon. G'day mate! :-)
All that Bon thought about was putting on a great show for the fans and having an even better time in-between.
He DOES!!
I've never heard him talk before, he has a very impish nature and a twinkle in his eye. A very intelligent man, awesome talent that sadly ended much too soon.
Extremely charismatic person. When Bon smiles it captivates the whole room.
True enough, tons of Charisma
Best frontman of a rock n' roll band of all time. Even 41 years later bands are still trying to find someone like Bon.
Fucken legend!
Well said !!!😁😂😂😃😃😃
Brian is mich better
@@stefanbecker468 That was a funny joke 🤣🤣 Dont get me wrong, Brian is Great and put in his time, But he and no one else could EVER lace Bon’s Boots.
True. Noone today like Bon.
He was Australia. Everything we love about our country and culture - the laid back ways, the larrikinism, the kindness, enjoying ourselves, having a laugh, having fun, our accent - he represented it all. What a beautiful soul who gave so much in such a short time.
Bon has infinite patience in this interview.
Ralph Lowi it was a different time. It was quite normal to put on a “swivelised” urbane facade for your publicity... regardless of how coked up you were at the time lol
Lebo leigh Leigh while he certainly was an alcoholic, there wasn’t much than Bon didn’t do at least once. His nickname was Ronnie Roadtest - because if his friends weren’t sure what something would do, they’d throw it to Bon, who wouldn’t hesitate to try it....
Yeah, I loved it when his eyes got big and he said he was getting a message from heaven about the single! He did good with this guy who was flat and boring.
4real on that. I remember my dad saying come look at the television
Anyone my age was a remote control right?
@Lebo leigh Leigh He did heroin aswell I believe.
I love how his speaking voice is just like his singing voice....
exactly, I was about to say that!
No shit! Now that you mentioned it, you are exactly right! I honestly can't remember anyone else who's singing voice IS the same as their speaking voice, thanks for opening my ears!
Kent Smith Freddie Mercury sorta
That's the secret. 😆
Plus alcohol.
@@Bb-pw1zi honestly should compare Brian Johnson to the Cinderella singer they have that same kinda thing sounds painful to sing like that
I met him once at a record store signing. He was sweet and quiet. This is a great treat to see him like this. Thank you.
Despite how extroverted he seemed to be, I always imagined Bon was mostly a quiet kind of extrovert. But he always seemed like an absolute sweetheart :)
Shoutout to whoever listens to AC/DC in 2020! Especially with the good “old” Bon Scott!
Anzac Day 2021
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MAN WHO EVER LIVED LOL
Bon was the real deal very kind and genuine a poet even. He was not a arrogant like other rock stars are he was real gentle man full of rock n roll
*HE WAS THE MOST ALPHA MAN OF THE ENTIRE ERA!*
*AN ALPHA MAN IS WHAT TURNS A WOMAN ON SEXUALLY AND IN OTHER WAYS!*
*IT CAN WORK IN BOTH WAYS!*
Alpha, animal, stud -all I know is he was a f--king ROCK N ROLL LEGEND. his style made "stars like Eddie Vedder, Steven Tyler etc" hide in the closet.
Jacob Molyneux, pedant much? LOL, you must be an absolute wet sock to have around!
Nowadays he's so underrated. I'm 27 and in my opinion, w/o a doubt, in the top 3 front-men who ever lived.
you have good taste sir
In the same vein (or is it vain?), i'd add David Lee Roth to that list.......
He put all his heart in it, like Angus, both the showmen of the band...
Yep
Wow! That is a very arrogant statement coming from my 27 year old. I being 53 years old would have to agree with you wholeheartedly! Hats off to you mate.
1980 was a tragic year for Rock Music we lost Bon Scott John Bonham and John Lennon all in the same year
And it was the year, 37 years before last jedi came out
Just looking at this for the first time..... what a genuine bloke .... His eyes say everything
Bon seemed to be a very likable person
Ronnie James Dio's words:- "Bon Scott was the most badass man I've ever met"
very intellectual, down-to-earth, creative genius… what an aussie legend
Named my son Bon. Gotta give the man respect.
buds for you his first name was Ronald
buds for you if i had s son ditto
@Coy Leigh Says the guy named Coy...
I heard bon was taken, because his last name was scott, and bon scott became short for Bonnie Scotland where he was born
@Wayne lawson Dude had a problem with alcohol but he was/is a legend...you got a problem with that?
Unbelievable, he says touring with kiss and a band called rush. Imagine that all in one it’s absolutely mind blowing, kiss ac/dc and rush it’s insane, no music at all today can come anywhere near them bands. Amazing
Molly sounds so ignorant and abrupt in this interview and Bon is just so chilled and down to earth! >:(
It sounds like an interrogation rather than an interview. Molly always seems to have had a problem with AC/DC.
@@Paul197A it's his mate! Check the description.
I had the pleasure of seeing AC/DC on that UK tour and met him briefly. Lovely down to earth guy who was genuinely friendly and pleased that me and my mates had come to see them play. We were only 16 at the time and we were there ridiculously early. Still one of the best gigs I`ve been to. Sweat was pouring down the walls and I was deaf for days afterwards because they were so loud. Just as it should be for a band like them. RIP Bon. Much missed.
Lucky you mate. Cherish that memory.
No doubt, unbelievable man!
I met Angus some 20 years ago in Aalten Netherlands. He is married with a dutch woman and has a house there. I met him there in a local supermarket and we had a nice little chat. Never met Bon but I'm sure he was as nice and down to earth as Angus.
i'm envious!!!
U lucky bastard! I would give my left nut to of seen and met Bon!
Bon seemed like a genuine nice fella!
wise man, easy-going, knowledgeable, extremely likeable fellow!
I was one of those "lucky" people that got to see AC/DC live with Bon. I saw them in a little town called Wheeling, WV. I was so excited to see them. Not knowing shortly thereafter, he passed. AC/DC with Bon came to Wheeling and rocked the f'in roof off! Good times, wish we could go back but feel so fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to see them!
I'm from Toronto, actually been to Wheeling once, sadly my first AC/DC concert was Hell's Bells tour after he had died. Which was great, but never got to see Bon. We were already AC/DC fans but were blown away by
B in B's polished sound when it released.
I hope Bonn knows we’re watching in 2021.
Awesome guy, look at his eyes. Gone too soon.
His talking voice and singing voice all the same. Genuine voice.
As a huge fan of AC/DC especially Bon Scott and the Bon Scott era of AC/DC I love watching these videos of him because it shows a different side of the Man, the Myth, and the Legend. Bon Scott was the epitome of a badass rockstar and frontman. R.I.P Bon Scott 1946-1980 🤘🤘
Molly Meldrum just talked in absolute riddles. Just nonsensical questions with no point... Amazing. Bon was and is a fucking legend, , just a warm down to earth bloke with a rough exterior and a kind heart. One of the great front men of all time.
BEST Front Man ever, R.I.P. Bon ♥️🙏🏼
Saw him in Newcastle (Mayfair and City Hall).
Never forgotten , he was the man.
He had it, the stage presence
Love Bon’s carefree, fun loving demeanor and mischievous grin. Greatest Rock & Roll frontman ever. Absolute legend.
Very telling comment from a genuine rock and roll legend, as the interviewer states that the band is focusing on live performances, and Bon states at 3:23 "That's all there is". WHOLE different concept of rock and roll performance back then, and so glad I got to be a part of it. Compare that to what passes for rock today, with all the pre-recorded lip sync BS and studio auto tone passing off as "live" performances. Here was a TRUE rock and roll front man
Bon was the raunchy in AC/DC., the frontman every band wanted and few ever found. Sadly gone too young at age 33.
Bonn Scott was great! It blows my mind that Brian Johnson was able to step into Scott's spot and bring as much success to the band as he did. It's a tribute to how great Brian is too. Bonn Scott must have been very difficult to replace, but Johnson pulled it off brilliantly.
Indeed
Its because Bon Mention Brian earlier to the band...so after Bon passed away they seeked him out.
I spoze it is a matter of opinion like everyone liked Brian so yes I agree bon was probably their best though
Too right!!!!
But Stevie wright would have been amazing
Bon Scott was an incredible singer and Bon was some character. Gone WAY to soon but never ever to be forgotten. RIP Bon.
What a beautiful creative soul.. There was no one else like him, I grew up on AC/DC and 16 years later I still get that same feeling hearing them as I did when I was a little shit walking up and down the road wearing my parents cassettes out. I quickly wanted to play guitar and I continue to try to this day lol. It's a love that I feel lucky to have and I'm so thankful this man got to share his spirit with us, I wish I could thank him and the rest of the guys for inspiring me and making me feel something I can be proud of. Much love ✌🎸
This guy was a genius. He will always be my favorite singer.
RIP Bon. 🥃
I was lucky enough to see him in 79 in a tiny little concert hall in Evansville Indiana. It was amazing, a few months later he was gone.
At least I got to see him once. & will never forget it.
Brad Roblling .. saw them open for KISS in ‘77
Kwel
If there are no pictures, that is not true.
My dad catched a Doors concerts in LA and has a couple of pictures
What? You calling me a liar?
Brad Roblling no, Tony Montana, relax mang
So crazy to watch this in 2019 and realize there was a time when Rush was an unknown band and Gene Simmons was not a household name. Very cool interview! Bon forever!
Right?! "Rush, you mighta heard of em" dude is like "no" wow, no one knew Gene Simmons this is an incredible interview. What a loss
Who are Rush?
Fuck Gene Simmons, glad he did not remember his name. Rush is good though.
Knowing what a conceited narcissistic individual Gene Simmons has always been, he must have been furious when Bon couldn't remember his name. Who cares anyway? If I had my band together back then, supporting KISS, I'd purposely forget Gene's name just to get under his skin.
@ Haha, I would have done the same.
Thank Austech for putting up this interview. I love Bon Scott and am finally proud to say I paid tribute to him by visiting his resting place in Fremantle, West Australia, last year!
Saw AC/DC open for UFO in Baltimore back in the day. They BLEW UFO off the stage! Malcolm played also. Never loved a front man more than Bon. He was perfect for the job. What I'd have given to have Bon as the front man to my band! R.I.P. Bon and Malcolm. We loved you guys in Baltimore! Tore the house down. 🎸🎸🎸
I saw them as a 16 yo on their last tour of Oz in ‘77 me and a friend climbed on stage and Bon touched my hand whilst singing ‘Can I sit next to you girl’ then I got in the local papers how lucky I was great singer, great band
That is cool!
Where was that? Melbourne?
Could listen to him all day such a really cool down to earth guy! A massive loss to the rock world (RIP BON SCOTT) 🤘
Pure natural voice for hard rock. Legend
It didnt always sound like this. He almost died on his motorcycle in the early 70s which apparently completely changed his voice.
@@chucklove8709 in what way? What do you mean
Miss ya Bon. Malcolm. Them Year's were Golden.. R I P

@Jack D
Bon was Scottish but he emulated the true origin of a rock vocal style which originated from the southern U.S. with his own style sprinkled over it...keeping it true to the rock n roll genre.
He was a GREAT singer and the perfect singer for that band.
@@stricknine8623 yes born in forfar but Bon was as Aussie as they come that's why all members that have passed have come home to Australia to Rest in peace .
Loved the old AC/DC sound. Don't get me wrong, Brian Johnson was cool too, but Bon just had a very unique voice that comes along once in a lifetime.
Chris Paneesh Brian is a great screamer, Bon is a great singer, in my opinion Bon was the man and will always be!
Brian Johnson doesn’t have a naturally unique voice? C’mon mate.
The only man I watch with a constant smile on my face.
So sad he passed away at the young age of 33.. imagine if he didn't and he was still around today..wow legend..
Looks fuckn 46 but
My favorite rock vocalist ever. Such a unique voice. And such a character. Loved this guy and was super bummed when he passed away. Remember that day clearly. And while AC/DC did great after his death, it just wasn't the same without him. RIP
I could listen to this guy talk all day!
Bon Scott, had the Mojo!
No wonder the rest of the band took his death so hard. He is just as humble yet straight forward as the rest of them. The Young bros both stated it was like losing a brother. I had never watched an interview of Scott and now that I have I'm blown away at how he really was. I imagined him entirely different.
latest plague Same here. Which made him all the more interesting.
ditto
Yes his real-life persona and stage persona are completely different.
Bon - "We're an album band"
Me - "Hell Ya Hallelujah to that !!!"
He looks so Scottish man it's unreal. When he died AC/DC was never the same.
I think he can looks like a lot of nationalities would it’s crazy tbh hah
I never liked the post-Scott AC/DC as much. It had its moments, but it never had the spontaneous rough edged rawness and humor after he died.
What a charismatic and likeable guy. Bon just radiates charm and likability. If anyone in the film industry is reading this, please make an AC/DC docudrama with Bon as the central figure. But don't make it stupid - make it good; like Lawrence of Arabia good...an AC/DC Lawrence of Arabia you know.
This guy was directing the interview and talking more than he was allowing the guest to speak.
Most legit rocker who ever was in the business.
100%
Why would people 'crap on' about the interviewer? He's great. It's like listening to two friends chat.
And as for Bon....what a lovely normal bloke. There was a 'realness' to people back then that you just don't see anymore.
You must have some weird friends if this is how y'all chat
I've been a fan of AC/DC since I was 17 in High School, I'm 26 now and I still love em'... Rock N' Roll ain't gonna die🤘
Such a talented and charismatic guy. What a loss.
Love this interview. Straight up and honest.

I really like his personality from what I can see..
Classy and gracious... very charismatic- a shame he died so young 🥲

Deteroblix yes definitely caught that , neither guy in the room knew that answer. What a horrible shame, Back in Black would have been a little bit different "record"✌️
Mitch ea'tt ee one guy, one girl - “Coral” is Coral Browning, the elder sister of their then-manager, Michael, who worked with them in the UK.

I understand that Freddy Mercury was a great singer but I never get how he gets the “ Greatest Rock Frontman “ ever label. To me Bon Scott has that grit and charisma onstage that no one else had even still today dont. What a great performer. RIP THE GREATEST BON SCOTT ⚡️
A lot of it comes from the fact that Bon could hold the crowd full of fans in the palm of his hand and Freddie could make fans out of those that were not (and hold THEM in the palm of his hand). Both were amazing in their time. Both sadly gone.
Iggy Pop is the greatest
It's because there is no "greatest rock frontman" ... It's all hype, meant to sell Queen albums or whatever.
It's all opinion. Freddie was not better than Bob Scott... Period
What about Jerry Garcia? Different genre, different fan base, but commanded respect of millions....and still does, even 25 years after he's gone............
What could have been, if Bon had’ve lived. Not taking away the awesome job Brian has brought to the band.
The cheeky face and smile of Bon! A very humble man too.
You’ll never be forgotten, Bon.
Keep on rockin in heaven. 😢❤
Bon - the greatest front man, genius lyricist, charisma by the metre, no peer, can't be replicated.
What a sweetheart, totally brilliant vocalist. Sorely missed ❤️
I’m in love with this guy now.
How sad that he died when he did he had a really great future ahead of him. THE GREAT BON SCOTT!
He looks much older than 31 here, the drinking has obviously taken its toll.
He's very articulate and pleasant in the way he's dealing with questions.
He was already experienced in the music business before he joined AC/DC, and at first the band thought he was too old, but Bons audition clinched it for him.
He was one of the best lyricists ever, a master of the saucy double entendre, and his showmanship was legendary.
Given the amount he drank, I don't think he would have lived to an old age anyway, but his death was tragic and unnecessary.
It is wot it is.
.
When I was a kid AC/DC could get you into trouble. Among my friends, I could listen to them if I went to “the bad boy” houses. Never in my house, my parents hated them. They were forbidden fruit. Why? Bon was such a nice guy. What a tragic loss.
I know. My parents hated them too but to no avail. He was a nice guy. Why just why?
there will never be another Bon
Old Mate see a hint of sadness and vulnerability here in Bon. I feel bad for what happened to him. Loved him on the stage. Holding out the hope that he is safe underground somewhere, silly me.
For SURE AC/DC is NOT a Punk band! Bon, a very classy guy, handled this interview like the performer he was, FANTASTIC!
What is punk really though? Loud, fast, short, obscene rock.
Mark Rago Punk, musically, is loud, obscene hard rock. Thematically it’s usually anti-establishment, which is the main part that separates it from rock music.
That's how they wanted to classify bands like them in those days. "Hard Rock" or "Metal" was mostly undefined back then. Ppl were quick to call any loud rebellious rock "punk".
Like reverse side: Nirvana. They're a PUNK band lol. But with sad lyrics so its "Grunge"? Lol. Etc.
they aren’t but they got close to it and inspired it. kinda the same with metal. all the thrash bands from the 80s were hugely inspired by AC/DC.
AC/DC was lumped in the same punk bag in the UK punk scene, and when punk went out of style in the very end of the 1970's, then they're label as Heavy Metal in the 1980 UK metal revival. They're neither punk or metal, but their own class of their own league, they are Rock 'N' Roll!!!!
Wow, a million views ! If only I could get you all to watch the rest of my channel :) Hope you enjoyed the interview, I think its the best ever with Bon because Meldrum got him before he was too smashed and also didnt let him muck around too much. This allowed us to have a much better insight in to Bon Scott and his thoughts.
What a great interview of an amazing man! Bon Scott was an animal on stage. He was being a gentleman here. Would have loved to see him live with the band. R.I.P🙏Bon..
We will never have the likes of him ever again Legend

Peter Goesinya I prefer Brian
@@TrussttN01 I prefer Brian infinitely as well.
They both good dipshit.
No comparison, and I’ve seen them both live in concert, Brian is a great screamer and Back in Black was pretty good album but that’s about it, Bon was a great singer and every song he did was great! Most people that like Brian better we’re not alive when Bon Scott was alive
Apples and oranges, can’t compare.
He just has a natural devious look about him. He's that guy you wanted to hang out with when you were a teenager. You know whatever happens, as long as you don't go to jail, it will be epic!😆😆😆
