Beached Humpback Whale Swims Free ©2020 Wild Earth Expeditions

  • Today we witnessed a beached Humpback whale free itself.
    It struggled, as the big seas, surge and waves kept slamming it amongst the sharp oyster-covered rocks. It was exhausted, seriously cut up and kept getting flipped over. A NSW park ranger was on site managing the situation, not allowing anyone near this 20-30 ton wild animal. After many attempts and with some luck with the incoming tide, it eventually was able to free itself. The handful of bystanders were all cheering as it slowly swam out to sea, heading north on its migratory path. We haven't heard of any injured or beached whales further up the coast and hope this animal survives and is back on its migratory path.

    It must have been heartbreaking to watch this. The desire to help but unable to do so, but through verbal support. I can't imagine the joy you felt when the whale swam away

      It was extremely tough, my 2 little girls were crying and all we wanted to do was hop in and just try to somehow help or comfort it. But as mentioned, it was simply too dangerous to hop in with the heavy surge, oyster-covered rocks but especially with a wild 20-30ton animal thrashing around trying to free itself. The relief we felt when it finally freed itself was beyond description, we were all overwhelmed with joy and hope that it would make it. As you know, most strandings don't end well. It was lucky to have the tide on its side.

      Impossible in the heavy swell from the storms. We were advised by a NSW Park ranger who was one of the few bystanders, that we were not permitted to enter the water. This is a 20-30 ton wild animal in a oyster-covered rocky bay with large swell hitting the animal. The whale did the best it could and eventually freed itself while we tried to comfort and support it verbally from the position we were allowed to be in. This is all we could do. And as much as we wanted to jump in, not only would it have been extremely dangerous, but we may have jeopardised the survival of this animal

    • @WildEarthExpeditions
      @WildEarthExpeditions  3 года назад

      Park Ranger and a lady from some Dolphin/whale organization were some of the few people on site. At the time there was a massive storm offshore for days, hence the big residual swells (this was the time when many beaches were washed away all along the NSW coast, even some properties were at risk being washed away). Would have been way too dangerous to get in there, even with a boat. Again these are very large, heavy wild animals in distress. Also, we were in a very remote area...no big towns or boats around (also big seas marine warnings). Anyhow, hopefully, there was a happy ending as it swam free in the end, even if very exhausted.

      @@WildEarthExpeditions It's just that some time ago, around 2014 or 2016, in the west coast of Scotland (I'm from Glasgow), there was a camera crew that captured orcas trying to kill a calf and believe me when I say that Mummy was doing everything in her power to protect her baby whale, EVERYTHING ! They got away eventually saved by other adult whales who heard the "crying" or "scream" call. Anyway, I Love orcas (I LOVE EVERY LIVING BEING) but that is too much for me to watch. Don't get me wrong, the orcas have to eat but as a human... do you understand ? Too much for my heart being a Taurus if it really means something! PEACE!

    Whale was young and not too big. And none bitch tried to help him pushing him on tide-offs. Didn't want to get wet, I understand.

    Why didn't anybody call emergency help? Get a boat out there with rescuers somebody to help. Just wait for high tide. Poor whale.

    I really think there should be an organization that instead of trying and hoping that these whales get back to the deep,should get there stomachs pumped, x-rayed ?? Something ??

      The NSW park ranger was on site before we even got there. He was managing the site and not allowing any human interaction to keep everyone safe because the conditions were dangerous. This is a 20-30 ton wild animal stuck against oyster-covered rocks in a heavy swell.
