Underrated symphony! The repetitious rhythms-such as the ones in the brass near the end of the opening movement-really enhanced the drama. The Adagio was pleasant to listen to-it wasn’t overly angst-filled.

The Linz version sounds clearly superior to me; the later versions seem to be too self-conscious and greatly impoverish this outstanding work. Of all the recordings I've heard of this terribly underrated symphony, this is by far my favourite, so thanks for uploading!

I fully agree. The Vienna version from 1890 is artificial in its structural and harmonic enforced complexities. It really is a pity that Bruckner in his later years so strongly got influenced by self-righteous pupils and collegues which made him waste his time and talent in useless changing his scores... not to their improvement unfortunately. The price was an unfinished Ninth...🤔😥🤔

@@Beethovens.Heritage I agree that the Linz version is far superior to the Vienna revision, but Bruckner's revision of his 1st Symphony was his own idea and had nothing to do with the influence of his friends and colleagues who had nothing to do with it unlike the final version of the 3rd which was instigated by and partly the work of Franz Schalk.

@@remomazzetti8757 Thanks for clarifying. The matter is nonetheless a sad example of Bruckners deep inner incertainty on the subject of his compositions. The failure of the eighth symphony in concerthall after the succes of the seventh symphony must have been a heavy blow for his self-confidence. Without this revision of a much older work he might have completed the Ninth. That remains a sad fact...🤔🤔🤔

@@Beethovens.Heritage That is true. Although I'm not sure whether it was simply a matter of too little time in case of the 9th. To me there seem to be multiple issues which all boil down to time in a way, but predominantly have more to do with his mental health.
First let's not ignore that he wrote down in his will which version of which symphony he considered the definitive version.
1877 in case of the 3rd, not the far more often performed 1889 version, 1880 in case of the 4th, and 1891 in case of the 1st, despite the 1877 Linz revision being far more popular nowadays.
But secondly look at how much time he spent on the 9th and what he was aspiring to do. I think the reason why he kept stopping the work again and again was his declining health and a crisis of faith. He was planning a final praise of God, and yet he started to stare into the nothingness ahead of him as he noticed that he was getting older, more frail, his mental capacities being ever more strained, dementia kicking in. The Adagio of the 9th seems to me the biggest tell that something was off within him.
He takes his usual form, but instead of glorious triumph at the climax like in his previous slow movements, there is only despair and anguish. Of which the Coda and the following Finale needed to provide a way out of.
      He just couldn't find one.
Whether that was his faculties failing because of age, his faith faltering in the process, who knows? The sketches of the Finale show that he hadn't found the solution.
And I don't think more time would have helped.
