Depeche Mode are one of the greatest bands ever to take the stage, Dave’s vocals & Martin’s music & songwriting skills are second to none. There is a reason I’ve flown from Australia to Europe to see them 3 times
Theres not many bands that stick around that long, even fewer that continue to release new material. The first band I saw play live was Pendragon and they're still releasing fantastic material today. Rush, Marillion, IQ, Bad Religion, Rancid, Gun and Magnum all had or have extraordinary longevity.
I saw Depeche Mode a couple of weeks ago in Birmingham (not much surfing going on), and they absolutely blew me away. Brilliant band, cracking setlist. Everything was spot-on, and I wouldn't hesitate to go and see them again.
Saw them last week in Manchester. Dave and Martin still have it. And this album Memento Mori is probably their strongest album since Songs of Faith and Devotion. Before we Drown is my favourite track on the album. Such a powerful song.
Dave Gahan is a great front man. I have been a DM fan for forty years. Where does the time go?! Love that they are still putting out such wonderful material.
As an old man that is trying to learn to play guitar, I am fascinated by your dissection of songs and the "ear" that you have. I don't understand the terminology, but I love it all! Maybe one day I'll understand the language of music. Pray for me!
I'm 49 and been playing over 35 years. When I teach I get all ages. It's definitely harder at an advanced age but put the practice time in and you'll see fast results! (At LEAST an hour a day, but you need as much as possible)
7th time seeing them on this tour in Dublin last weekend and they are truly enjoying themselves and look so happy. All of that comes across in their performances even more so since their December break.
I was at the Dublin show last week aswell. Incredible night. The new material sounded amazing live, more energetic, atmospheric. And yes indeed, the lads really looked like they were having a brilliant time up there. Magnificent show! 👍
As someone who bought Dreaming of Me, when it was released ! I’m dead chuffed that they can still produce quality work like this all these years later. Good work Mr H.
Took my husband to see them in London recently, he’s had to listen to them for years, courtesy of my devotion to DM. He was absolutely blown away, as was I. I’ve even caught him listening to some of MM album without me. I really hope that G and G continue with DM. I’ve been listening to them since Ultra, as I am a 90s kid. Their music has got me through some really tough times when my mother died and I was a lost soul. This song is amazing, I love it. It reminds me we have to keep going and persevering even when it seems too much.
I've been a DM fan since New Life. I had the pleasure of seeing them on the Devotional tour, three times, when as a band they were at their very peak, and Dave was a rock god. It blew me away. I saw them again the other week in Glasgow, 30 years on. Obviously, it's a different set-up now, with them being a duo. They were still bloody brilliant, Dave still as limber as ever, and still with a fair amount of power in his voice. This particular track is epic live, it just takes you away with it
I count myself fortunate that I was able to see them at their height in ‘89. Such an achievement for an “electronic” band to be so good live. Gahan is one of the best front men ever. Momento Mori is their best work in 20 years. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Great video!
I got dragged along by wife to the O2 gig somewhat reluctantly and was absolutely blown away. New stuff slotted in seamlessly with the classics. Was surprised by how amazing Martin’s voice is as well. Up there with best gigs ever
Memento Mori is a fantastic album, & Before We Drown is definitely a highlight. I always love Anton's work with DM. No need to apologise for the audio/video quality either - it's cool to get an insight into life on the road!
Aren’t we all just the luckiest people in the world just to be alive during the whole Depeche Mode era?! Like seriously think about that for a moment! If we were born a 100 years earlier we never would have gotten to experience one of the greatest bands ever! When I was 17 I never wished for something so hard in my life before! What was my wish? That I could magically turn into Dave’s microphone stand during the Live 101 VHS tape! ❤😂⭐️🤘🏻🎹🎸🎤
Depeche Mode and the Darkness. My favorites of all time. Shout out to Philly. First time seeing DM at the Spectrum, Devotional tour early 90’s. I lost my voice. First time seeing the Darkness in Philly 2004. Lost my voice. Justin. I love that you love DM and cover their music.
They have had some troublesome journey..drugs and alchohol issues..but they are still here and I thanx god everyday for that 😊..They are just so different a band and still is to this day!!😊..nice review..
Love this song. Best track of a strong record. Love the bit at the end when Martin's voice comes in. Wasn't impressed with Spirit, but I've been listening to Memento Mori a lot. I have seen them many times live and the very first concert I was allowed to go to as a teen was DM in 1983. I've been a lifelong fan since. Just a shame they didn't come to Cardiff this time.I would have loved to seen them. Last time I have seen them when they toured the Exciter album and that was in Hamburg in the soaking rain.
I managed to get a ticket for Manchester 29th jan (at 2am-just before they sold out) took myself for my 50th birthday, that day (old lol) and they WERE AWESOME! Don't doubt, folks, go see your fave bands while you can 😍
Twickenham stadium last June 23. 80k fans and this tour is massive, if it's their last I'm certain they'll be missed. Wish they were the original 4sum and toured UK more often, but also think the new guys are good.
The chord change to the parallel key at 3:40 is very reminiscent of the similar change at the “words like violence / break the silence” point in their old song “enjoy the silence”
Thanks for covering this great song. Depeche Mode is such an amazing group. Looking forward to seeing them two more times live in Germany very soon! I think the album as well as the tour are their strongest in quite a while.
Seen DM 3 times live, an incredible live band, an incredible band full stop. Dave Gahan is the most charismatic frontman you are likely to see, i remember the Mtv reports (when Mtv was a watachable channel) that he might have died back in the mid 90s and was so sad that day...now 25 years+ later he his still as amazing as ever. Also RIP Fletch
I've been a Depeche Mode fan since the early 80s. Although I mainly listen to Metal Core, Death Metal and the ilk today. D.M will always be my favourite band of all time...
Well, I DID hear this song live, only last night in Amsterdam and it was impressive. But then again, so was the whole of the set. And Daven Gahan didn't forget to come in at all, so that's nice! He is indeed one of the greatest frontmen around. Can I mention Martin Gore's voice? Haunting in the background or - forgive me for only noticing now - as a damn fine lead vocal
25 and love electronic music, Kraftwerk, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Jean Michel Jarre, Eno, and of course Depeche Mode, got to see them at Twickenham last year, my Mum insisted on taking the car and not the train down from the Midlands, so we had a nightmare driving into London to get to our hotel. The chaos was worth it though, after seeing Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds live back in 2018 for my 20th bday, it was the best concert bar none I’ve been to. Nothing has quite beaten the sight of thousands of arms going side to side during Never Let Me Down Again.
Nice clip Justin! I saw them may 23 in Antwerp, and last week again. Last year i went last minute because i didn't feel like campin or hanging out with my friends outdoor. I wanted to do st on my own, i got me a second hand ticket and got blown away, alone and again. I've been a huge fan of their work over the years, and images from corbyn to off course. But your review is just completely how i felt the last half year. What a great band, and also the lyrics on the last one are so so great. I feel the need all my friends have to be aware of that, you know what i mean, that's not happened the last 20 years... i keep tellin friends to listen to 'speak to me' for example. First time i heard it, i was really moved, since then over and over again. They're one of the biggest music givers (if that word excists - as in love givers), of their time, our time, all time indeed. They're dark and straight and sweet and r'nr' liked it always has been ment or something. As i grow older, i love them more and more. And not only as a musician, but just as a human. It's great, thats what DM is, just great.
having lived with this track for nearly a year, since the album release - it is such a grower. wasn’t that mad on it at first , but now it’s a total highlight. SO moody. DM are the soundtrack to my life. saw them live in London recently - they didn’t play it, but then started to a few gigs later! gutted 😂
DM are great I first saw them in 1986 at expo 86 in Vancouver in a 5000 seat out door venue 😮and then saw and met The Cure all the fans looked like the band they were just standing there out of the front gate 😮 love the eighties 😊
What I love about out your videos are you always give such respectful to artists/bands that are legendary. Also new music too but it’s so lovely to hear your opinions on the songs. Love the way you can put aside their back catalog respectfully and listen to the current releases in an objective way even though it’s hard to separate the two I know. Huge respect and admiration for you and your band too man. Been a fan since 2003 and seen ye play with Metallica in Dublin. Even slept on a bench near the train station with 4 mates cos we were so broke and couldn’t get any girls to let us crash in there place which now I completely understand but were only 20/21 and had a real fearless bravado 😅 Ot was totally worth it to see you guys, linkin park and Metallica. God we were mad but happy. Anyway love the videos man and the Darkness always too 🤘❤️🎶
I just drove 5 hours to watch a 45 minute set at Party In The Paddock after 20 years of hoping to see you live SO worth it!! You killed it and your vocals live are something to behold. Band sounded awesome Well done
Another one here that saw them at Manchester. was at the back in top tier but meant I was able to take in the full spectacle of the light show and the crowd waving. Awsome!
I think this is Gahans masterpiece ...he wrote this one❤ I love MM and saw em twice in this last tour...loved them live...I see em every tour since 93 devotional been a fan since speak n spell. They still got it! But do miss Alan❤and SOFAD is my favorite album
my favourite track off the album, gutted they didn't play it at Twickenham in the summer but the rain coming during the encore for never let me down again was superb
100% agree that its one of the strongest songs they have done for a while. Songs of Faith & Devotion is in my all time top 10 albums, not least because of saw them at Crystal Palace at the time as an 18 year old. Never got the credit they deserve and Dave Gahan is a fantastic front man.
Love the breakdown!! I have been a Depeche Mode fan since I was 8 years years old. When I first heard People Are People in 1984, I was hooked then and there. It took me 39 years, but I finally got to see them live November 21, 2023... One of the best concert experiences of my life!! So powerful live... Dave's stage presence is amazing... Especially all his endless movement throughout the show!! Martin doing the solo Strangelove gave me chills... As did Dave and Martin doing an acoustic version of Waiting for the Night. Even better it was like only 4 feet away from where I was standing on the floor!! I will always cherish finally getting to see them live!!
My older sis got me into music when I was roughly around 11? I used to follow her round, much to her annoyance hehe (I still annoy her now lol ❤) and loved the music she loved. Depeche being one!! They are very distinctive from Dave's voice to the little guitar or synth riff's. Undeniably Depeche Mode!! 🥰
their dark beats always hit a sweet spot with me. nice. this feels mid 90s and I am extremely happy with that. I love how JH when hes hyped and really into something he immediately plays it showing the enthusiasm which also keeps me enthused... thusiated thussed well yeah. It's fun seeing the slew of legends showcased here from Priest to DM. man i'm loving this tune from em. this tune is sick expecially the echo thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before We Drown is one of two exceptional songs on an album full of superb songs,. for my taste their best since Violator. The instrumental "we drown" playout is very powerful.I can never listen to this song once. I have to go again, usually twice. :-)
Surprisingly found Memento Mori to be wonderful! Reignited my love for this band! Opener My Cosmos Is Mine is like an Intro, not much of a song (to me). At least 6 or 7 bangers in there! Would love to see them play the new album live in full or as an unplugged thing. Love the backing vocals in Before We Drown, too ❤ A super underrated song from Exciter is "The Dead Of Night"
Fan since the Vince Clarke days, who I also adore: Yazoo, Erasure, I mean these bands have been a big part of the soundtrack of my long life (70 next week). I saw DM in '87 at Madison Sq. Garden on the Music For the Masses Tour, which IMHO stands alone in their huge catalog. Just found your channel yesterday and signed on. Watched your interview of Rick Astley and want to look into your work, I know I've heard the Darkness just need a refresher. Ciao from NYC!
I'm glad to hear this song made its way to being a single release. Upon my first listen to this album, this was my instant favorite song, yet, upon looking at a number of music reviewers it seemed to be a song not getting any mention or mentioned like it was some sort of filler song with no merit. To me this has such a cool, yearning, eyes-closed kind of mood.
Heck yeah Depeche Mode! I instantly love this song😊 Reminds me of “It’s No Good” & “Enjoy the Silence” two of my faves. Those dark moody synthesisers combined with Dave’s vocals are like soothing medicine✨🖤✨
I went to both their o2 gigs as well as Twickenham last year. Have been to see them over 20 times on every tour for decades, they are the best and always sell out every date. You cannot do that for decades without being amazing.
I saw them in Oslo last August and they deserve to be selling out arenas. The whole of the Memento Mori album is far better than it has any right to be.
Martin is genius, but everyone calls him that! I regard him as the one strange thing among us, the man with the wings... the supersonic angel descending to earth with his new opera. 🙃
I'm so looking forward to seeing them in April. I'm going to the first date out of the three they're doing in Köln. I think it'll be the 35th time I'll have seen them tread the boards. Can't fucking wait!
Great video and memento mori is such a great album! I highly recommend to take notice of their support act at the US tour last year. They got DIIV as their opener and I was so happy that one of my favorite bands would support one of my other favorite musicians! ☺️ Would really look forward to an reaction video to one if DIIV’s songs, They are very talented and authentic guys. Also would like to hear what you think about Shoegazing music in general 🙃
🎫 Tickets for Justin Hawkins Rides Again tour in London & Liverpool: tinyurl.com/kneukve2
They were my favorite band from 1987 till like 2015 when Linkin Park outpaced them for me!

Hiya Justin...pllllease remember Mr.Gahan's name is pronounced *GONE* not Gu-hawn* !!
❤
This band actually delivered "the soundtrack of my life" and I know lot's of others who feel the same! 🖤
Depeche Mode are one of the greatest bands ever to take the stage, Dave’s vocals & Martin’s music & songwriting skills are second to none. There is a reason I’ve flown from Australia to Europe to see them 3 times
Nahhh he’s just not a good singer he minces around the stage and dances like he’s shaking custard off his arms
4 guys with keyboards is not a band. Yuck
@@revwillyg6450 I don't think they've done that all synth setup since some time in the 80s. They've used real drums and guitars for decades.
@@papaquonis glad to hear that! But I probably will still hate it 🤷♂️
So what’s the reason?
I saw them in Amsterdam last night… and he did, Dave Gahan, do pirouettes… only in a vest this time. They were absolutely brilliant!
I wish every child can have a band for most of their lives. Mine is DM. I feel loved.
Me too, my fave band since 1984 when I was 12. It’s almost like supporting a football team.
@@andy7owen7 Snap! That's the same age and the same year I really got into them.

@steveleadbeater8662 another advantage is that they tend to get better at the it and mature.
I saw them last month. I'm sure they were even better five days later when I saw them again, or maybe just louder!
I saw Depeche Mode a couple of weeks ago in Birmingham (not much surfing going on), and they absolutely blew me away. Brilliant band, cracking setlist. Everything was spot-on, and I wouldn't hesitate to go and see them again.
Love them or hate them you can't take it away from them brilliant live band put a great show on

Dave Gahan is a great front man. I have been a DM fan for forty years. Where does the time go?! Love that they are still putting out such wonderful material.
I caught them this tour at Madison Square garden and it was so electric. The energy in that building was just incredible.
As an old man that is trying to learn to play guitar, I am fascinated by your dissection of songs and the "ear" that you have. I don't understand the terminology, but I love it all! Maybe one day I'll understand the language of music. Pray for me!
Suggest following Rick Beato. He's the man when it comes to developing your ear on guitar.
Never too late
Shred Master Scott on his Shred channel has lots of terrific lessons for music theory and guitar
I'm 49 and been playing over 35 years. When I teach I get all ages. It's definitely harder at an advanced age but put the practice time in and you'll see fast results! (At LEAST an hour a day, but you need as much as possible)

Oh yes - if I had one wish it would be to go back in time to go to every Depeche concert I could. That 101 shot when Dave raises his eyebrows - oh my!

I loved Depeche Mode's music in the 80's and I like their new stuff now.
Gahan's voice gives me fervent 80's nostalgia.
I had the pleasure to see them live a few months ago. It's definitely one of the best performances I've seen.
Off to see them yet again. Seventh time in a year and still not enough!!! 🥰🥰
Great reaction to a rare gem of a tune. This is Mode's finest single for me since 1997's 'It's No Good'. Powerful and haunting.
My wife and I saw them in Dallas last fall and they haven't missed a step. They're as good live as you could hope. ❤

Best concerts ever from 1984-1990. What a party!!!
The best live snare sound I’ve ever heard.
Songs of faith and devotion is one of my top ten albums of all time , the depth of emotion is what sets the entire album start to finish ❤🎶

Thanks for presenting this song, Justin. I'd forgotten to check out Momento Mori, this is a good reminder for me to order a copy. Sounds great.
Great video and analysis of a new beautiful song.....I love DP, Dave is a charismatic frontman...have a good week end Justin..
Saw them for the first time this month in Antwerp. Best show ever!!
This is an excellent song and video.. Loved every second, thank you Justin.
Seen them at the Hydro 2 week ago, epic as always
Never has the music of so few meant so much to so many ❤💀🖤
Great analysis & breakdown.
You pinpointed it exactly, when you described them as complex & moving.❤❤❤
I'm glad to hear this song made its way to being a single release. Upon my first listen to this album, this was my instant favorite song, yet, upon looking at a number of music reviewers it seemed to be a song not getting any mention or mentioned like it was some sort of filler song with no merit. To me this has such a cool, yearning, eyes-closed kind of mood.
Saw them at the ziggodome last Thursday in Amsterdam
Great band and amazing sounding venue
Saw them in Detroit a few months back, fantastic show! I was just listening to them earlier today, impeccable timing!
We need graphical prove of you surfin'! 🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️😜
Happy FriYAY!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
Absolutely!
Apparently, they are surfing on the backs of sharks 🙂
@MariaFrancesca maybe to change it up its the back of Rays?
Saw them in Dublin last week
Incredible
Welcome to Australia. Love your videos and love DM.
Just seen them in Dublin last week. They were amazing!!!!
I'm always astonished by artists who can write at a high level, for decades.
Amazing band and seen them twice this tour amazing band and have absolutely loved them for most of my life. Seeing them live is such a mega event.
Saw them live last year, had a great time. Memento Mori is a wonderful album.
Violator show what awesome. One of the best shows I ever saw.
Martin uses that major to minor change in a lot of their song! Love his songwriting!
Great video and memento mori is such a great album!
I highly recommend to take notice of their support act at the US tour last year. They got DIIV as their opener and I was so happy that one of my favorite bands would support one of my other favorite musicians! ☺️
Would really look forward to an reaction video to one if DIIV’s songs, They are very talented and authentic guys. Also would like to hear what you think about Shoegazing music in general 🙃
Martin loves the arp 2600!
Good painting music , danceable music. I love it
Fantastic show last night in Canberra 🤘
