Plant's singing on this is unmatched
Yeah, he just can't hit those same highs any more!
i see what you did.
II knew I heard it before. It became "Midnight Moonlight": by the Firm
"Ahahahaha" SO funny!
Green Sombrero I didn't hear any singing
A lost masterpiece indeed! First time I've ever heard this song, and I love it. Happiness is-hearing a "new" Led Zeppelin song for the first time.
I'm doing the same right now.
I think that Jimmy turned Swan Song into Midnight Moonlight with the Firm.
These types of “slower” songs have always been my favorite. And I love all things Zep but when they play acoustic? Wow! Such range and talent and cohesion.
the best unfinished LZ song IMO
Same opinion here. This is the only outtake song that was professionally recorded in the studio. I'm surprised this didn't even make it onto Coda or the reissues. In the shape it's in, it might as well be included in Zep's official discography
''i wanna be her man'' is a great unreleased one too if you haven't heard of it.Its a shame it was never released.
Just search for "Midnight Moonlight" by The Firm, it's a complete version of this song with Paul Rodgers singing, wanted to hear Plant singing on it but Paul Rodgers is still really great
@@JediWarrior2007 One point is that Mr. Rodgers wrote the lyrics to Midnight Moonlight… as such it takes a different direction to the one plotted for Swan Song, which was going to involve the four seasons.
Kowasi Atrociously simple minded and vulgar, what Paul brought to this sublime song.
The original ending had the descending riff from Kashmir in it, that was how it got into Kashmir in the first place (al least that's what Jimmy says)
i mean if you play the kashmir thing at the end of this song it fits perfectly soo
i heard jimmy say that but ive never heard it, is there a link somewhere to it?
eatthisvr6 type in kashmir it might get loud. You’ll find 3:30 clip of him talking about it
@@andersonfuller7912 i know about that, iv never actually heard it though, iv heard several versions of swan song (including midnight moonlight which is what jimmy turned it into with the phirm)
@@andersonfuller7912 you just linked to the same song. do you have a link to the documentary "it might get loud"?
Digging the rarities , been a Zeppelin freak my whole life . I'm now almost 54 Jimmy pretty much taught me how to play guitar !
Brian Olendorf You too, eh! 🙌🏼. Jimmy was a great instructor. Moving through the early part of 55.
same with me...except im not almost 54
Yes Jimmy Page was one of my influences in the pursuit playing air guitar from age13
Funny, he taught me I can't play guitar 😰
That's great! Bonzo practically taught me how to play the drums!!!
My guess for why Jimmy Page hasn't released this is because a swan song is the song that a swan sings right before death. Since Jimmy said in an interview that he is going to do another album, I don't think he's nearly quit on this masterpeice.
.
He actually already made this song an actual song while he was on The Firm.
Id hope that was the case. This is the GOAT
@@simonwebster1148 Goat Song? (Literal translation of Greek for 'Tragedy')?
@@JP-vb1ur what is the title
One of the most unique aspect of Zep’s music is the heaviness and power of their acoustic compositions.
No band has ever laid it down like this or like they do. The definition of heavy.
The drums are unmatched....Those frikkin crash cymbals..
At least, it's upbeat
Led Zeppelin! The favourite band of your favourite bands
You are spot on
I seriously wish this song was released. Had it on repeat for a while now. Just such a good composition.
It's basically Midnight Moonlight by The Firm.
So much swagger and slinkyness in those drums
SongSwan yes when those drums hit boom bap it's sounds so gritty I love it....
To all those who wonder what made Bonham such a perfect drummer, listen to how he adds tension and then removed it, look at some of his ghost notes, And then listen to Chris Slade do it on midnight moon light. Chris does an admirable job, but the difference is astonishing. Remember, this is John Bonham just messing around, this is not the final version. Unfortunately the final version never happened.
Hell yes. It's that groove, always that groove with this band. What a signature. Bonzo 4Life.
Bonzos drumming on this work of art is a fucking goosebump producer
Like listening to Led Zeppelin for the first time in my life, all over again...
The bass in 1:57 until the entrance of bonham's thunderdrumm....all delicious!!
True Zepp Sound💪
i can't stop listening to this
That is because you are exceptional.
If you ever wanted to sing as well as Robert Plant - this is your track to practice with first - to give you confidence.
Something about this piece of music made me pick up my bass and figure it out. While the notes were easy enough to find, it was JPJ's phrasing that confounded me. That ascending riff at the 2:00 mark starts a 16th note ahead of the beat... a true master of rhythm.
Whole new level
That's Page playing bass. On a mellotron.
How is it played? Tab?
Where did you find the music?! I’ve been looking but never finding anything 100% accurate
good use of confounded, has anybody seen the bridge?
Oh my oh my oh my this is the BEST quality I've ever heard!!!!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!
No problem :)
Led Zeppelin Rarities thank you brought me here always loved their work ,but never heard fhis swan aong have to get Sep rarities
Midnight Moonlight Lady. Glad he did finish it.
Page is a genius . He said the original version ended out with the Kashmir riff . Beautiful arrangement .
Should have been on the Coda Deluxe release
Yeah, it really should've.
Or Physical Graffiti (Deluxe Edition)
The tape was stolen from Jimmy’s house...that’s why this bootleg exists.Dozens of tapes were taken by a friend of his ex wife. The whole version is about 20 minutes long according to him.and we will never hear because of some thief.imagine how this would sound with a Page remastering...sad we never will
@@thomascullenjr544 Also, I think Page made a point of avoiding what's available on bootlegs, for the most part.
Considering the amount of blank space on Discs Two and Three of Coda Deluxe, I would have hoped the Zep vaults were quite empty… I think the reissue series has instrumentals more exciting than Swan Song- Jenning's Farm Blues and La La being two prime examples- but if there ever were a point in time to dish out what's left, it would have been on Coda Deluxe. A missed opportunity perhaps…
I want Page to officially release more previously unreleased Led Zeppelin material 🌹
I like the"New and Improved" moniker.
All that I can say is Go Far Girl!
I firmly believe this is the one that got away from Jimmy.
According to Ultimate Classic Rock magazine, it was going to be one part of a 4 part suite of music based on the seasons, with huge orchestral movements. In the end it didnt work out, not for lack of trying as he kept coming back to it for over 10 years, but for whatever reasons ultimately it was shelved.
This is the biggest tragedy EVER
Yup… the article makes it sound a bit like Queen's Innuendo. "The original idea was to have four sections coming back to the same theme each time." Then again, "There would be four separate melody lines dealing with the seasons. Robert will do the lyrics." www.loudersound.com/features/the-story-behind-the-song-swan-song-by-led-zeppelin
I agree. It got away....but not from lack of trying but because of the time signature and wacky chord progressions that could have been more simple. Parts are beautiful and parts are all over the place. At least we got Kashmir from it !
So glad I grew up in the 70s when rock was king and LED ZEPPELIN were gods...long live the mighty Zepp.
I can't stop listening to this. I'm hearing now by my mom's telephone and she is also into it. So wonderful is to find new material from an artist which you loved his / their work for all of your life... Specially when it is good. And for this song, oh my... Speechless.
JPJs bass tone around the 2:00 minute mark is amazing
This is why I consider Jimmy “The Lord Of The Strings“...🎶🎸🎼😍
if i ever get to ask robert anything, i'd ask him what his working lyrics were to this song, back in 1974
Probably the same Greg Brady early lyrics to In The Light. His placeholders were not so good, but usually they got much better.
It's an instrumental.........no lyrics
They were trying to turn it into a song, not an instrumental. A certainly goofy version was created with Paul Rogers. If you ever listen to the firm and midnight moonlight, you will not be able to listen this one song without laughing. This song and 10 carats ribs pod pod or whatever as I was called, both could’ve been late 70s classics. Add lyrics and soaring guitar.
There's vocals somewhere in jimmys collection
Led Zeppelin Rarities he's a part of the hermetic of the golden dawn.... gives me the chills of the oath and "practices" they do........
Fuckin Fantastic.....why this track was never put on an album is beyond me. Bonzo rippin it up. Beautiful. Love it 🥁🥁
Led Zeppelin will forever be legend(.) I only hope my final heartbeats consistent of their music filling my ears as well as my soul followed by my first walk with the Lord, us singing Ten years gone together as I play lead guitar , slowly melting the Lord's face. Amen...
This seems more like one of the many hundreds of ideas for songs that either eventually get tossed out or recycled into something new. I say this because It seems like its missing a few parts and it isn't mastered either.( or not very well)
Typically, they would either move ahead with the overall jam and fine tune it or make some minor changes to it and then record it all over again for a final take. Or, they would save it for a later album or recycle the tape it was recorded over.
This sounds like just such an instance, and I love it! Its where the real creativity starts, the arguments happen and the blood sweat and tears come from to produce a final copy of a song or track. This would be Led Zeppelin at its core of that time period.
I'm also guessing that it helped to inspire the song Ten Years Gone.- I know the two sound totally different, but when you take away the part in this which would be a verse, and leave the bridge and the chorus parts, you can hear the idea being formed, and evolved into something totally different.
thanks for uploading it!
Ken Rowe yeah, I think I see what you mean about Ten Years Gone - but in the middle I could hear something that sounds a lot like the last sections of the rain song, too! Anyone else got that?
Think I heard something close to thank you as well
Midnight Moonlighting..firm dadgad
In the movie It might get Loud Jimmy claims that Kashmir directly came from this. It's in DADGAD tuning which Kashmir also is
This is a banger. Straight genius of jimmy Page
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much! This is a beautiful revelation, a wonderful addition to the Zeppelin song catalog.
This is the greatest thing I’ve heard in so so long ….. absolutely perfect!!! It embodies everything I personally love about Jimmy Page and Zeppelins Sound !!! Page ar his best!! Thank you for sharing this !! Now I’ve gotta grab my guitar and learn this lick!! 😎
Jonesy had no right going so hard on that bass 😍
Great track. Very mysterious that it did not turn up in the recent Led Zepp reissues with companion disc rarities. I thought it would be a cert for inclusion.
Check out the Firm’s first Album.
Midnight Moonlight!!!I I love the Firm's version too
John Paul Jones is laying it down!!
So cool how his tone gets more defined at the 1:58 mark of this clip. Notice at the 2:00 mark how he starts the lick ahead of the beat... master of the "tight but loose" groove.
I thought I heard somewhere that Page plays bass on this demo and the drums were added later. Can someone verify or refute?
@@troyjgrice I'm inclined to believe that JPJ is playing on this track. The phrasing and attack is full of those rhythmic subtleties Jones is known for. You raised a great question though.
@@shantypiker41367 Not sure where I heard that. It was a while ago. Either way, I can't understand why it's not on one of these re-masters.
JPJs Bass lines are staggering!
Kashmir was born from the ending of this song when Jimmy was jamming
Love the bass on this
I feel like this song is a bit like a piece of scratch paper. You just start jamming and putting some riffs in it, see what clicks. Play it back and build on what works. Amazing song nonetheless. That’s what I’ve always liked about this band: their outtakes sound better than most bands finished work.
Everyone says John Paul Jones is under rated, I say he is right where he belongs in the history books..at the top! He has no equal, none of them do, they were a one time only deal!!
Rush ! Lee, Lifeson, Peart !
Too Smooth To Move,
Rush are not even top 20.
@@lyndoncmp5751 not in your small existence no
@@lyndoncmp5751 and that's criminal in itself, love Rush
so good....jones really tears into this
At the 1:58 mark he cranked the treble and played between the beasts... beautiful bass work here!
Jimmy plays bass.
These are undoubtedly the greatest riffs ever conceived for the guitar
Love the Part when Robert Plant kicks in at 4:58!
Led Zeppelin forever.❤
You wish.
thats a good one! 😂
I absolutely love this. It sounds.....like me when I was becoming a better player by spending hours practicing. I would jam on my acoustic for 20 minutes in this or a similar groove. Steve Howe and Jimmy Page were my big influences at the time. I should mention Terry Kath, because he was right up there too. Pagey, Jonesy and Bonzo take me right back to those days before and during the bands I played in. Playing an acoustic guitar, working out chord patterns and trying to figure out their relation to scales and modes. THANKS FOR THIS. PEACE.
most Zeppelinian song I've ever heard
A very lovely arrangement by the greatest band ever. 🎶❤🎸🎸🎸
I really would like to see this on an official release. It deserves to be part of the official Zep cannon, as an extra somewhere.
Love Jimmy's acoustic Ike the rain song open tuning crazy shit DGCCGD but makes the sweetest sounds jimmy really is the master .
It's like I'm ascending into heaven. Or Valhalla :D
TheTroll Mastah Shh. Only greek myth allowed. No norse myths
mumima mamama speaking plant and page both were obsessed with Norse myth it is allowed
Your profile is pink Floyd. Lol 😂 and your a big fan of Led Zeppelin.
Lawson Santoro Yeah Zeppelin is my favorite band of all time, I’ve had this profile picture for like 5-6 years it’s one of my favorite albums and it’s so iconic I probably won’t ever change it. Pink Floyd to me is a close second along with Otis Redding
I get goose bumps when I hear this song ... 🤩🥰
I saw Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers perform this song as " Bird on a Wing" Dec 8, 1983 at Madison Square Garden . In 1985 THE FIRM played this ( now titled) "Midnight Moonlight". If it's out there on You Tube- then it should be cleaned up and remastered for CD someday. You got my vote.
ARMS. I was at both shows, what a lineup!
@@marctkoppell everyone I spoke to can't remember that Cocker acknowledged Lennons Anniversary Dec 8 and played With A Little Helo. I realize they played that at all 9 shows- do YOU remember ? I bought a bootleg t-shirt still have it
@@familydogg1234 I have the sweatshirt (torn, but still have it) that names everybody on the tour. I actually recorded the second night, only recorded feeling all right with Joe during Eric‘s set and then recorded Jeff and Jimmy’s set. I only had a 90 minute tape and it ran out right at the end of Layla so I didn’t get a recording of help from my friends, which was great because Jimmy was on Joe’s recording of that.😎
They were supposed to release concert. I know CA got a radio station release. Money disappeared. When Ronnie Lane got his lead caps removed and replaced with plastic his MS went away. Bunfortunately he died of complications. We saw a once in a lifetime event my friend. Cocker Watts and Lane and Beck left us all....
WHY AM I JUST NOW HEARING THIS FOR THE 1ST TIME IN MY LIFE . 🤘
Page worked on this for decades, from noodling on White Summer to playing Midnight Moonlight. I don't think it ever became what he wanted it to be.
Elements of Swan Song went into other released songs, from Black Mountain Side to Bron Y Aur Stomp to the Rain Song
Was bonzo's kick replaced by a cannon?
Yes he replaced it Thor's hammer. ✌
The big bass drum sound. Two inch felt dampening on the front and back heads, no port hole. Mics on both sides. As always, Ludwig 8x14 Supraphonic...fat and loud...
See RUclips for "the big bass drum sound" Jeff Ochletree was John Bonham's drum tech. There are acoustic reasons JB's bass drum was so kick ass.

This song is amazing, don't know why Led didn't put it in the record.
Awesome time to remember the best of all time bands.
is this the famous lost Swan song that Robert refused to sing over and jimmy page apparently lost the tape of the recording
Yes! I didn't know Robert refused to sing over this, though.
If he did refuse that makes me very sad, because the whole feel of this performance beats Midnight Moonlight all to hell
Was there a reason Robert felt he had to refuse to sing over this? I mean, what would keep him from wanting to sing over a track as good as this one? His vocals on this would absolutely BLOW MY MIND!
Jeni Rein I think it's because of the implications behind the name. The "Swan's Song" is the last song the Swan sings before it dies. A band's Swan Song would signify their end. I'm Gonna Crawl is kinda Zeppelin's Swan Song for that reason.
Sal Zulli But how? Kashmir was written because of this song (actually the main riff of kashmir was originaly the ending riff of this song), and there have been some albums after kashmir.. so how could it be a goodbye song at that time?
Jimmy later recorded this with The Firm. Checkout Midnight Moonlight. This is much better version.
I can't remember which bootleg I had it on, but they did Kashmir/ Black Mountain Side / White Summer all together. Anyways, the White Summer part was essentially Swan Song, which ultimately became the Firm's Midnight Moonlight.
They always did WS/BMS/Kashmir on the 1977 tour.. I have a few concerts posted from then
I love my song. Thanks for naming it after me
I really wish JPJ, Page and Plant would all come together to finish the song in their own way. With brand new lyrics and vocals by Plant and keeping John Bonham’s original drum track.
Basically their own Free As A Bird, Real Love or Now and Then.
They’re all still alive and I feel they could potentially do it.
I really wish this was added into the new remasters for either physical graffiti or coda remastered with some new overdubs.
This sounds like freedom
Bonzo’s thunder foot is one of a kind .
page, bonham, and jones together were absolutely incredible
Thank you very much for uploading this!
Jimmy tells Bono and Jack White on another youtube clip that the ending of Swan Song was his starting point for Kashmir, sort of reversing it
Thx so much for downloading easily the best quality of theirs song I have heard :)
Gracias Alvo, siempre buen material 😱✌️👍
Love this and It's a shame Jimmy didn't finish it with Zep but he construct a final song called midnight moonlight lady which takes parts from this song and expands it when he was with the firm
I think jimmy is holding on to this one. He's going to release it before he dies. After all, a swans last song is before it dies
Can only imagine if Plant was adding some roaring, “Oh, oh, oh baby.... Pretty baby...” kind vocals to this. Such a shame this never was completed by Zeppelin.
This song became “Midnight Moonlight” by The Firm.
This is incredible. Midnight Moonlight was superb but just imagine what could have been. Paul handled the slow abstract areas admirably it must be stated...NT
How can you write something that good and don't finish it ??? and after that writing a song called Hot Dog a produced it on an album ???
Beyond incredible! ❤
The lyrics would probably have a Whoa Mama woooooo yeah yeah oooo I’m there for sure
2:46 - 4:59 is just the best🙌
Infamous DADGAD tuning, eventually used as Midnight Moonlight.
Wow never knew this existed Amazing
Wonderful, big thanks! je ne peux pas m'empêcher de pleurer à la césure... une note flottante qui fait tout
I would have loved to hear Plant sing this ...But Paul Rogers did a fantastic job.
Ken Martin I really didn't like the Firm's lyric or approach
This was released in "The Firm" album as "Midnight Moonlight".

Only close band for me is The Beatles and maybe Floyd. I’ll just say there my three favs. :) too hard
I picked up "The Firm" for $5 on Amazon, and wasn't impressed with "Midnight Moonlight. I feel that it's too disjointed. This, this is better.
Page probably had to squeeze like 30 minutes of solid music into 10 minutes...
Regardless, still a great album to own. The first track "Closer" is based off of another song I posted.

Starting to listen to this song more and more
Who's hoping for a CODA II someday?
seeing a lot of folks commenting about the bass on this. Wild guess that it's a Fender VI played thru a guitar amp. sounds like the tone was rolled down at the top of the tune, then turned up at the re-entrance.
Would not be surprised if this isn't JPJ but Jimmy. But it could be JPJ just playing differently if it is indeed on a Fender VI, but to my ear, it sounds more like a guitarist playing bass than a bass player.
Pure speculation based on a bit of aural experience....so take it fwiw (not much)
many years ago I got a bootleg called physically present. this was on it.along with other great gems
Just learned to play it -- and I feel like a demi-god. Where's my amp?
This sounds like every Led Zeppelin song mashed into one
Shoulda been the last song on in through the back door
