The musical chemistry here is palpable, especially in the call and response interplay of McBride and Airey. "=1" opens with a banger and ends with another banger. Perfect bookends. Everything in between is all killer and no filler. The heaviest sounding and best Purple *album* in decades. Just WOW.

The music itself is pure rock and roll. To me personally, Gillan's vocals just oozes Deep Purple. I'm just happy they took on this project way out here in 2024! I totally dig this album.❤

There have been suggestions that this album harks back to the band's prime time early 70's period. The song titles even suggest this e.g. Portable Door = Knocking At Your Back Door (okay that is '84), Lazy Sod = Lazy, Pictures Of You = Pictures of Home and Money To Burn = Burn. Okay this is a bit of a stretch but some of the riffs sound familiar. The band have produced an album that is sharp, to the point, energised with less 'progressive tendencies of say Purpendicular and Now What?! although the final track Bleeding Obvious is multifaceted. Simon McBride is a more 'straight ahead' player than Morse and is reflected in the more concise song structure. Reinvigorated and re-energised this is a powerful album that is however sympathetic to Gillan's more restrained vocal delivery. For me Ian Paice is the star turn with his best drumming performance in a long time. Just listen to A Bit On The Side and Now You're Talkin' (my personal favourite). For those stating 'no Blackmore no Deep Purple' (sorry Michael) are missing, in my estimation, the band's most creative period under Morse in terms of song structure arrangements. Let's be honest the musicianship within this band has always been of the very highest order whoever the members are. This album should appease those who mourn the passing of prime Deep Purple of the early 70's, at least in commercial terms, whilst simultaneously creating a modern 1,2,3 punch of an album that is more immediate than anything the band has written since maybe The Battle Rages On?

  • @johnandrus3901

It is a pretty good album, for sure. McBride brings a bit more 'Hard Rock' vibe to DP, but a lot of us aren't ready to christen him as the new Blackmore or Morse, quite yet. The songs are very good and Gillan still does well in the studio. Live is another thing, unfortunately. Their playing is superb, as always and even though it is a bit mid-tempo, they pull it off quite well. The fact that the vinyl is a 45 rpm record, should help the sound quality, although I don't like changing speeds on my older, JVC Quartzlock turntable, as it can be a little fussy. I'll get the album, since they are my favorite band and I have almost everything that they've released, other than a few odd-ball special releases that are hard to find and the lifeless Turning To Crime. Either way, it is a very good album and it shows that they can still put out quality music.

I hadn't used it in a few years and it wouldn't lock on to 33, when I took it out of storage, for some reason. I took it apart and thoroughly cleaned it with electronic cleaner and it works perfectly. I'm pretty sure that it was the speed control switch that sets the rpm, which is why I don't like changing it between 33 and 45.

2 or 3 better tracks but overall a disappointing album for me. Feels a bit restrained to me . More of the same like before with great musicianship but the songs are generally meh.
They need a new producer after Bob for the past 5 to get a hard rock sound IMO as this to me is comfortable progish rock. I really hoped that Simon would have been unleashed more on this album but not to be. Love Paice as much as ever.
Bought my first Purple album "In Rock" in 1970 so its been a journey.

I’ve loved DP but =1 is a disappointment
Gillan clearly has given up on singing. From possibly the best rock vocalist ever, to talking his way through an album; what a descent!
Listening to the tracks; one of them sounds like Uriah Heap and another could be a Rainbow B-side, nothing stood out to me.
The first time I listened to ‘In Rock’ and then again in ‘Machine Head’ I was bowled over. I’ve listened to ‘Made in Japan’ a thousand times and still do.
Machine Head was the reason I took up guitar.
    But this album sucks.
Without Lord and Blackmore they were going to struggle, but this is a new low.

Agree. The magic ingredient was always the combination of Blackmore and Lord. They produced the timeless classics. Without both of them that incredible level can never be reached and what we have had since is a very good rock band making average to good rock albums and entertaining people with good shows but never again scaling the heights reached in 70s.

For years now, we've been off by one MK. LOL
The brief lineup w/ Joe Satriani (with no DP studio album) really shouldn't be bestowed with a, MK. It should be earned with at least a studio album (ie. Come taste the band or Slaves and Masters). =1, is the MK VIII lineup. Not that it really matters. Maybe this requires a poll. 😅
