@@pauljohnson5925 well…as you said…you stumble around his posts here and there. Having been a sub for awhile, I will say that the majority of his posts are very positive. When he reviews The Beatles albums or Zep, it’s all positive. However, his pet peeve are theses old rockers who keep touring past their “sell by” date and charge an arm and a leg for tickets. In other words, what Michael views as “going corpoRate” or “selling out”. And he just said that when he gets to that point, he’ll quit himself. It’s his channel, so he can rant as much as he likes. And saying he probably 80 was either just mean….or it means you are VERY young. If he’s reached 70, I’d be surprised. He looks like late sixties to me. And I’m 75.

Mick Taylor is criminally underrated, can't be a coincidence that their finest work was with him in the band, shame there wasn't a bit more equity in the songwriting credits. It's a harsh assessment, close your eyes and they still sound more or less the same now as they did over the last 25 years. There's something comforting about the fact that they never stop.

And I think that their performance was suprisingly quite good. Sure, their energy isnt what it used to be (although jagger was quite energetic still) and keith soloing was pretty bad at times, but it still felt that they were emotionally present in the performance and not just routinely going through the numbers. And I saw that they clearly stil enjoyed themselves on stage. I thought that especially their rendition of Angie was still really emotional and touching.

I've always found the concept of aging rockers trying to go on forever a bit odd. From the beginnings of the art form in the late 1940s through the grunge era in the 1990s, it was always a youth-oriented style of music that evolved and reinvented itself with each new generation. There is something jarring about having 80-year-olds hobble on stage and try to rock out like they did when they were in their 20s. Maybe a few can still do it, but most can't. At some point, it is time to retire. Rock may not have the mainstream popularity with the youth nowadays that it once did, but it is still out there, and there are numerous subgenres and underground scenes. Searching around in the depths of Bandcamp is fun; good music can be found there. I don't go to rock concerts because I can't handle being in chaotic, noisy crowds, but if I went to one today, I would want to check out a new, up-and-coming band in one of the underground scenes in my area. I wouldn't pay a fortune to see ancient legends who are well past their prime. I'll enjoy their recordings from when they were at their best.

I agree so much. I gave up most of the music from the 60's and 70's by the 80's, and am always looking for new music. Rock music's been harder to find since the dawn of the century, but it is out there. I am still going to concerts in my late 60's, because the local SRO venues are nice about saving me a a seat at the edge of the chaotic crowds, and live music feeds my soul now as much as it did in 1970. And there seem to be a lot of up-and-coming artists who put on great shows but don't make great recordings, so I'd have skipped them if I hadn't hear them live.

Wow Heather, I couldn’t agree MORE. Look for the artists that haven’t “made it” yet - they’re out there and need support to keep the music alive. The last “big show” I saw was the last nail in the coffin of big shows for me. To spend the kind of money you have to put out for a major touring act these days, then sit in the middle of 20K other people trying in vain to actually see and hear the band… in this case, two women in front of me standing the whole time with phones held high taping the show. Apparently those of us behind them were expected to watch the show on their phones? Also next to us were a group who came in late, two of whom were obviously not having a fun night. Very entertaining to listen to a domestic argument competing with the band’s less bombastic moments. Nah. Not worth it anymore. I’d rather pay $20 to go see and HEAR an up and coming hungry artist, one who’s on top of their game and not yet phoning it in, putting everything they have into their gig in a 100 seat club somewhere. Generally, people who catch those shows are there for the music, not because the band is flavor of the month.

I saw GN'R when they opened for Aerosmith on the Permanent Vacation tour. They were exciting to see because they weren't so glam, but they didn't know how to work a stage yet. Just brilliant…and accurate. Everything you state here…is exactly what I feel too. Your criticisms are constructive though….and respectful…as usual. You’ve got a great channel brewing here Mike. Many seem to not only agree with your commentary but enjoy it as well. Listening back to Stones music over the past few months, simply to familiarize myself with it all, I liked quite a lot of it. Though I still feel that there’s much hype of fanfare tacked to them. I never understood “what the frenzy was all about” with this band. People flocked to sell out the largest stadiums throughout the years to see em. All the while I’m happy to sit in my car, rip a butt and listen to Zeppelin….again. I don’t know what it is….I’m just fascinated with Zeppelin STILL. I just like their product better than what the Stones gave us. Naturally I’m a rhythm oriented guy. I learned that early on. I have good ear and a good sense of time. In fact in my now broken up band, at a given rehearsal working on a given song, if it were obviously dragging, I’d feel it but the others wouldn’t. I just stop play my bass, and they’d all look at me: “What…?” I’m like….you fkn guys….are you all deaf?” Sorry for digression. I’ll end it now with: Zeppeplin’s products simply appealed to me much more than the Stones’.

No one buys a ticket to see the Stones, Paul, Bruce, Who or Eagles expecting to see a band in their prime, although the backing musicians are terrific. It's an icon show and a greatest hits show. Period. Remember, a ticket is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. And someone's willing to pay for it.

Look out folks, Michael’s back and on a tear!!! Ha!! This was great (and very insightful too, esp the corporate aspect of the Stones, which most likely stems from the super business-savvy Mick Jagger).
Even though the Mick Taylor-era is widely acknowledged as their artistic high-water mark (and I am so grateful that the one time I got to see the Stones live was on their 50th Anniversary tour where Taylor guested), my favorite era was with Brian Jones, arguably the greatest utility player in rock history.
You didn’t mention it here, so I am curious: did you ever see the Stones live? If so, what incarnation?
Absolutely great stuff here Michael. You’ve got me rockin’ (and laughing my ass off).

Having grown up with the Strolling Bones and the Beatles, by 1970 I was well and truly over both. I've wondered why I fell out of love for them and the only answer I have is that the hype surrounding the two bands overwhelmed my enjoyment of their pure musicianship. Today, I can't play either, even considering their exceptional lyric writing and musical crafting. Notwithstanding the output of both bands, there are still some exceptional singles that stand out from the Stones and the Beatles. The ultimate test is whether I'd go out and purchase a whole album and to date, my collection is still devoid of both.
This critical selection in my music taste went beyond 1970 and I can only listen to certain parts of my favourite bands, including Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Led Zep. We were very critical even about the catalog of music our fave bands produced. Back then, music was fan driven and if we didn't like an album that our bands released, we'd give it a ragging. Time did heal some of the criticism and I did get to enjoy releases I previously wrote off but for others I still can't revisit them for love nor money.
I remember as a teenager, we were very tribal about the music we enjoyed and the window from 1970 to 1975 was the apex of the battle ground for the most intense division and criticism (with the occasional crossover). By that stage, the Beatles and the Stones were left far behind. We were spoiled for choice in that era and even though I appreciate the hard work of so many bands, my taste was always very personal and critical.
Many times I wouldn't buy an album of my favourite band if it was mostly filler tracks. A few stinkers on the album would still encourage me to buy a release but not a whole side and the best bands could occasionally release whole sides of filler tracks. (I appreciate that this is a subjective thing but music is after all mostly subjective and a matter of personal taste)
The mystique and elaborate narrative that plagued my appreciation of the Stones and the Beatles cemented them in a particular time and I can't get them out of that in my mind. This does not in any way diminish the major contribution to rock music and engineering innovation that they made.

They still put on a good show, although about 50 minutes into the set Kieth was clearly getting winded and seemed to hit a wall, I thought the rest of the guys were fine. And since they vocal style is not over the top Mick sounded great.
I've always been more of a Stones fan; although I have come to appreciate what The Beatles and Elvis Presley have done for music I have never been a huge fan of either. I did go see Ringo and the All-Stars on their second American tour, because of the back up band he assembled on that tour.

The Beatles may have been a fairly good live band, but they threw a strop somewhere around 1965 because the screaming was too loud and they couldn’t hear themselves properly.
The Stones would have just bought bigger amps. Let’s face it, from the footage available, it’s clear that The Beatles weren’t anywhere near in the Stones league as a live band. The Stones were, probably even still are, the greatest live act in rock n’ roll.

I do not compare the Beatles with the stones, both bands have individuality, Beatles ( excellent albums , creativity, awesome harmony ) lasted for only 8 years, stones took to a dirty level and moved on, millions and millions love them, some of their lyrics are kind of chauvinistic, towards mocking women( which I am against) but it's only Rock n roll, millions of ladies still love them, I agree Darryl should be a full time member just like Woody ( who was salaried till 1992) at least in the staged band pics, I agree I can't stand the fact that the fans do some kind of gating who to be a member, Steve Jordan replaced Watts, just like Taylor replaced Brian, I agree it's too corporate just after Wyman left... I kind of agree with you ....but nowadays they are just like a Vegas band, it's their charisma and legacy that drives their fans, not the music, they play the same songs again and again...lost interest in their live after they became corporate, but they are always my favorite band, one notch up the Beatles....I agree without their backing band, the stones show would be a total disaster......

I like to think that the Stones don't need the money and are just enjoying being up there with the fans screaming for them. If it's otherwise, I don't want to know, and I've not really got a dog in this fight because a little of their music goes a long way for me. That said I acknowledge they have some great songs in their repertoire. My personal favorite is 'Paint It Black' -- full of anger and rage in the sound and lyrics. BTW, I just watched the live stream of Led Zeppelin's O2 concert which I'd only seen a couple of clips of and it was wonderful. The surviving Led Zeppelin members had this one last concert to show the fans who they are and say goodbye to the band as an entity. Tales of them trying to get a new singer aside, I felt it was a great way for a legendary band to come to an end. That's not the way the Stones are doing it. Maybe it's a community thing--it makes me think of online sites where people have been congregating and talking and when the site goes down, people are angry at having lost that connection.
